SYNOPSES: JANUARY - JUNE 1976

JANUARY 2, 1976 (EP. #2904)
Sharlene came home early from work to help Alice and Sally set up for the open house party. Alice was concerned when Marianne declined to attend. John asked Barbara to accompany him to Alice's; Russ dropped in to inquire about Pat; then Marianne phoned and agreed to dinner. Beatrice made the call to Louise when Rocky was too shy, then he stumbled through asking her over to dinner. Carol created a romantic setting before she gave Willis an heirloom gold pocket watch, from Grandfather Lamonte who'd created the family fortune. An upset Carol related how she used to hate her mother for breaking her grandfather's heart (by marrying his son just for his money and then divorcing him for a large settlement) and then hiding her away in boarding schools so her friends wouldn't be reminded she was old enough to have a gawky, teen-aged daughter. Marianne delicately questioned John about Pat. Jim was delighted to sample Beatrice's soup. Rocky was nervous when he brought Louise over, then Jamie and Dennis spoiled the surprise they'd all be going for a sleigh ride later. Liz informed Alice that Jim's sudden concern for Beatrice isn't very pleasant for Helen. Sally greeted Willis and Carol. Sharlene warned Russ she's liable to go to pieces if something went wrong with someone she cared for again. Jim poured Barbara some eggnog as Liz laid into John for having the nerve to invite her to a family party.

'RANDOLPH CONFERENCE ROOM, LATER. BARBARA AND JOHN AT THE TABLE, GOING THROUGH FOLDERS.'
John: "[PUTTING A FOLDER ON A PILE BEFORE BARBARA] Well, we can close the file on Sally's adoption now."
Barbara: (Kathryn Walker, Introduction Line) "That's one case that's ended without anyone getting hurt."

JANUARY 5, 1976 (EP. #2905)
Liz didn't find an entry for Lenore when she spied in Helen's address book, but she vowed to find out what was really troubling Pat. Alice thought Liz's idea ridiculous that Pat fled to Washington to get away from what's going on between John and Barbara. Barbara told a mousy Marianne to take responsibility for the harm she's caused her parents' marriage. Michael apologized to John for his selfish behavior, then was distressed when Jim realized he's been keeping secrets. Helen explained to Liz that Jim was just helping smooth things over between Beatrice and Alice, then John dropped in to see if there was news of Pat. Marianne promised Michael she and Pat would level with John, then she tried to bury herself in her term paper when Liz dropped by. Jim encouraged Barbara to accept when John wanted her to join them for dinner since his kids seem to feel uncomfortable with him. Alice told Russ she wants to take a more active part in Frame Enterprises to help curb her "new mother" syndrome. Over dinner, Marianne revealed she signed up for art classes with Kenneth Palmer, the sculptor. Jim advised Alice not to give credence to Liz's gossip about Pat.

JANUARY 6, 1976 (EP. #2906)
Jamie came over to bring Sally to see her surprise at the mansion. Willis's forbidding Sharlene from accompanying Sally and meeting Rachel only made her determined to do it. Rachel said she distrusts Willis; Gil snitched some Christmas cookies; and Ada wondered if Jim was being so kind to Beatrice just because Alice asked him to. Willis was impressed when Carol got on swimmingly with Jamie. Angie wouldn't allow Scott to discuss her personal life with her. Neil was optimistic when Angie refused to accept his engagement ring. Angie played it cool when Willis came in, but he saw the ring box Neil left behind. Pam let Scott know she already had a special friend when he proposed dinner instead of discussing Carol's cost overruns. Gil lamented he hasn't heard from Tim in two years. Ada told Angie it wouldn't be fair to marry Neil since she didn't love him. Sharlene poured hot chocolate, which Sally served to Jamie and Rocky. Jamie introduced Rachel to Sharlene, and they later discussed Willis's protective attitude toward Alice, Liz's bad opinions, Russ, and Steve.

Jamie: "Mom, you haven't met Sharlene yet. [HE TAKES HER TO THE TABLE] Sharlene... Mom--"
Rachel: "Hello, Sharlene."
Sharlene: "Hi... I've wanted to meet you ever since Jamie came to visit us in Chadwell."

JANUARY 7, 1976 (EP. #2907)
Liz thought it a blessing when Marianne revealed Chris had left town after proposing, but was displeased to learn Barbara had joined the family for dinner. Jim didn't want her to be bothered but John insisted on setting up a meeting with Alice to let her know of Carol's cost overruns. Clarice was glum when a moody Robert barked at her. Dave assured Marianne that Liz's suspicions of Barbara were nonsense. Robert kissed away Clarice's concerns about his involvement with Iris. Alice worried Willis would resent her interference, but John believed it was her duty to Steve as the major stock owner to give guidance to a young and inexperienced Willis. Carol planned a trip to New York to convince Keith to let her access her trust fund so she can pay off the overruns. Scott agreed to come with her when Alice phoned for Carol to come over. Jim showed Sally an old family album, then she asked Beatrice if Ray could come for a visit. Jim thought Liz took the cake for thinking John was beginning to treat Barbara as if she's the mother of his children. Carol and Scott convinced Alice there was nothing illegal about an architect funding her own embellishments. Alice tried to hide her distress by poking at the fire when Marianne phoned John to join them for dinner but learned he was too busy working late with Barbara.

JANUARY 8, 1976 (EP. #2908)
Glenda helped a glum Michael take down the Christmas tree, then Pat returned eager to make a fresh start. Sharlene told Willis how surprised Emma was to receive all the appliances he sent her, but wondered if he was doing it to make up for Steve abandoning the family. Willis forbade her from telling Carol any more escapades about his childhood. Rachel told Mac she espied Louise and Rocky walking down the bridle path. Willis didn't think Alice should let anything divert her attention from Sally when she announced her intention to come in to work a couple hours each day. Dave and Russ were happy to see Pat. Willis vented his fury to Pam and Scott that Sharlene must have been the one to go running to Alice with the shopping mall budget. Rachel showed Dave the bust of Mac she was working on. Dave gave her and Mac Ken's number. Sharlene prevented Russ from leaving her alone with Willis, who demanded to know why she was spying on things in Carol's office for Alice. Russ defended her valiantly, but Willis warned she'd better have a better explanation the next time he talks to her. Pat told Alice that her sudden departure had nothing to do with Liz's suspicions.

JANUARY 9, 1976 (EP. #2909)
Barbara told Pat that John was more sympathetic than Marianne gives him credit for. Pat was incredulous when Liz insisted she was blinded about Barbara. Louise and Dennis welcomed Iris home. Since he's been postponing business trips to look after Rachel while Beatrice visited with Sally, Mac asked Beatrice to see if Louise can come over and fill in for her instead. Barbara declared her innocence when Liz started in with her insinuations. Pat was afraid John might be shocked into saying things he doesn't mean, but Marianne felt she would be able to explain everything to him. Rocky was happy when Louise and Dennis arrived to go sleighing with him and Jamie. Beatrice was surprised when Ray showed up and revealed Olive took the boys to her sister's in California and plans to file for divorce since she wants things her own way. Iris and Robert appreciated each other's honesty when they admitted they're not very nice people. Robert offered to cancel his plans with Clarice when Iris stated they're adult enough to comfort each other without making demands neither of them could live up to. Iris balked when Mac asked her permission for Louise to fill in for Beatrice from time to time. Liz was in disbelief after overhearing Marianne thank Barbara for being so understanding about her abortion.

Pat: "Please don't start on Marianne now."
Liz: "She's really not equipped to handle the freedom you've given her."
Pat: "Will you go away and let me handle my own life!"
Liz: "But you can't handle it!"
Pat: "I'm certainly doing a far better job than you did with yours--"
Liz: "Oh, Pat, how could you say such a thing to me?"
Pat: "[CRYING] You provoke people into saying things like that. Aunt Liz, please, find something else to occupy yourself with... I can't even think straight when you come around with your stories."

JANUARY 12, 1976 (EP. #2910)
Liz rushed blindly off after hearing Barbara urge Marianne to wait for a more appropriate time to come clean with an exhausted John. Mac summoned Ken Palmer to his office to request he tutor Rachel. Ken withdrew his reservations when he learned Rachel wasn't as old as Mac. Helen was surprised when Vic offered to help reunite Robert and Lenore. Liz informed Helen that Barbara was turning Michael and Marianne against their parents. Jim apologized to Rachel for Liz's remarks. Clarice realized that Robert would both get away from Iris and possibly run into Lenore when Vic revealed Robert may be chosen for the new Pendelton project in Washington. Ken told Rachel she has a good, strong sense of form, and agreed to tutor her when she declared her intention to devote a lot of time to her sculpting. Being with Beatrice and Sally reminded Jim of when he and Mary took care of Pat's children. Liz warned Barbara she'll make sure Pat knows what an unscrupulous woman she really is.

Mac: "[THERE'S A KNOCK AT THE DOOR] Yes, Clarice, show him in. [CLARICE OPENS THE DOOR]"
Clarice: "Mr. Palmer's here now. [KEN APPEARS BEHIND HER]"
Mac: "Good. Thank you, Clarice. [SHE GOES OUT. CORY PUTS THE BOOK ON THE COFFEE TABLE AND MOVES TOWARD KEN] I'm Mac Cory. [HE SHAKES HANDS WITH KEN]"
Ken: (Kelly Monahan, Introduction Line) "It's a pleasure meeting you, sir."
Mac: "It's a privilege to meet you, too."
Ken: "I really don't see why, Mr. Cory."
Mac: "You will... Now, please, call me Mac."
Ken: "Yes, thank you, Mac."
...
Ken: "Tell me, is Mrs. Cory really serious about sculpture?"
Mac: "She works at it steadily, several hours a day."
Ken: "Why did she take it up?"
Mac: "Dr. Gilchrist recommended some activity to keep her occupied indoors while she waits for the baby."

Mac: "[HE GOES OUT. RACHEL RISES AND GOES TO HER WORK TABLE. CORY ENTERS WITH KEN] Darling?"
Rachel: "[TURNING] Did you get the-- oh, hello."
Mac: "This is Ken Palmer."
Rachel: "Well, how do you do?"
Ken: "Good evening, Mrs. Cory."

Notes: First appearance of Mac's office.

JANUARY 13, 1976 (EP. #2911)
Mac gave Ray a job at the complex handling insurance and compensation in the personnel department.

JANUARY 14, 1976 (EP. #2912)
John was delighted that Pat was back to her old self. Pat ordered Marianne to come over for dinner. Liz warned Pat about Marianne but couldn't bring herself to repeat what she'd overheard. When Robert admitted he was no longer interested in her, Clarice warned him Iris will find a way to punish him. Dennis grinned when Louise gave Rocky Alcestis, named after the most faithful wife in Greek mythology. Pat told Dave she has to do something to stop Liz from trying to protect her. Michael threw Liz out after she didn't believe Marianne's insistence Barbara didn't know about the abortion until afterward. John was furious when Barbara admitted Liz was hammering her with outrageous accusations. Clarice warned Iris that Robert was more vulnerable than he lets on. Iris advised Robert to forget about Clarice as you can't find happiness by looking backwards. Louise told Rocky that she names her plants after great heroines. Michael was apologizing and promising to fill Liz in when John came over. Liz revealed to John exactly how Barbara was turning Pat's children against her.

Michael: "[PICKING UP LIZ'S PURSE AND HANDING IT TO HER] You've already said too much, Aunt Liz."
Liz: "Please, Michael, listen to me."
Michael: "No, you're a meddling busy-body and everyone knows it, so please go home and make trouble somewhere else. [HE TAKES HER BY THE ARM AND LEADS HER OUT. HE CLOSES THE DOOR AND COMES BACK TO MARIANNE, WHO'S CRYING SOFTLY] Honey, honey, come on, don't pay any attention to her."
Marianne: "She'll tell everyone now! She'll go to Uncle Russ and then Aunt Alice, and even to Grandpa and everyone will know what a fool I've been. [SHE SOBS IN HIS ARMS AS HE TRIES TO COMFORT HER. FADE OUT]"

John: "All right, Liz... I want to know exactly what you heard."
Liz: "Barbara arranged that Marianne have an abortion in New York without you and Pat ever knowing it."
John: "How do you know that? No, no, I..."
Liz: "I heard her and Marianne talking about it when I went to your office to wait for you the other night."
John: "Why would Barbara do such a thing?"
Liz: "To ingratiate herself with Marianne--"
John: "No, that's impossible... [HE SHAKES HIS HEAD] Marianne wouldn't do such a thing... and neither would Barbara."
Liz: "You think over what happened during the holidays and you'll realize I'm right. Barbara Weaver has moved into your life without you or Pat even knowing it. [JOHN STARTS TO SAY SOMETHING] Don't argue about it, John. Stop it, before it goes any further. [JOHN STARES AT HER, AND THEN RUSHES FROM THE ROOM. FADE OUT]"

JANUARY 15, 1976 (EP. #2913)
Ken came over to the mansion and met Beatrice and Jamie. Iris then came over with Robert and was intrigued to meet the charming young man. Robert was embarrassed when Iris made light of Ken's tutoring of Rachel. Iris made sure to let Rachel know Mac was keeping his need to take business trips from her. Alice changed the subject when Sally told Ray she was looking forward to meeting his sons. Rachel told Ada she was bothered to learn Mac was putting off business trips so as not to leave her alone. Neil told Vic not to ask him to have much sympathy for Robert. Clarice cried to Angie about humiliating herself to Iris to try to protect Robert. Neil dragged Robert away from Iris's to come work on the museum. Iris commissioned a sculpture from Ken to give Mac and Rachel during their first anniversary party. Willis was miffed when Sally doted on Ray. Vic met Ray when he came to show Alice the latest sketches. Neil told Clarice not to waste her tears on Robert. Rachel disapproved when Beatrice admitted to Willis that Ray's wife took his kids and left him.

Rachel: "It's typical of you Frames that you talk first and think later."
Willis: "I'm tired of listening to criticism from someone whose only real knowledge of my family comes from trying to destroy one of us."

JANUARY 16, 1976 (EP. #2914)
Pat was distressed to awake and learn John hadn't come home last night, and told Marianne she couldn't have told Liz she knew about the abortion because she hadn't wanted to volunteer anything Liz might not have known. Michael phoned to let them know John had seen Liz. Barbara assured Pat that John was so angry that Liz would have been afraid to say anything more to him. Pam let Scott know her parents had enjoyed meeting him, but reminded him there was already a man in her life. Sharlene welcomed back Carol, who handed Scott a certified check to cover the over-costs to be hand delivered to John. Sharlene wouldn't elaborate on her misunderstanding with Willis, but agreed to attend Carol's welcome home dinner. Russ agreed to come along when Sharlene assured him Willis won't needle her if he's around. Jim rushed out after Barbara said Pat needs him. An unshaven and exhausted John demanded to know why Barbara arranged for Marianne's abortion; she denied it but refused to violate a confidence by elaborating. John was devastated when Michael vindicated Barbara only to reveal the rest of the family had known. Michael informed Pat and Marianne that John knows all. Jim advised Pat to throw herself on John's mercy. Sharlene was vague about the details when she told Russ Willis might try to blackmail her into talking Alice out of something. When Pam forbade Scott from letting them join Carol's table, Carol worried about unpleasantness between her and someone who works for Willis. Barbara found out for Pat that John was staying in Room 345 at the Bayside Towers. Pat tried to explain her various reasons for not telling him, but John refused to believe she had planned to tell him last night.

Michael: "What did Aunt Liz tell you yesterday?"
John: "She told me Barbara helped Marianne get an abortion."
Michael: "That's not true."
John: "And that she kept it from me and Pat."
Michael: "Mom knows all about it--"
John: "She what?"
...
John: "I don't want to hear anymore."
Michael: "Dad, listen..."
John: "No, it's obvious that no one cared enough about me to tell me what was happening to my own daughter... I don't understand anything about anyone any more. [HE TURNS AND GOES OUT QUICKLY, MICHAEL STARTS AFTER HIM. BARBARA TAKES HIS ARM]"
Barbara: "Oh, Michael... Everything's gone wrong. He'll never forgive any of us for this. [FADE OUT]"

Pat: "John, I tried to make her tell you, but she wouldn't."
John: "Am I such a terrible father that she couldn't share her problems with me?"
Pat: "She couldn't face your losing your respect for her."
John: "No, Pat... she didn't trust me enough, and neither did you."
Pat: "Don't say that, please."
John: "It's always been true..."
Pat: "No, it hasn't."
John: "You married me without loving me..."
Pat: "Yes, but I grew to love you..."
John: "Maybe."
Pat: "You don't believe me?"
John: "A wife who loves her husband would not have robbed him of his place in his family."
Pat: "I didn't do that."
John: "Oh, Pat... I've always been your children's father more than your husband..."
Pat: "That's not true!"
John: "You probably don't even know it yourself... but there's always been a wall between us, and now I see what it is..."

JANUARY 19, 1976 (EP. #2915)
Michael was optimistic when Marianne felt John would never forgive them for keeping secrets from him. Pat wouldn't allow Michael and Marianne to downplay her guilt, and admitted John was right about her keeping him out of their lives. Jim badgered it out of Barbara that Liz was involved in the trouble with John. Carol wondered why Sharlene was more tolerant of Steve's devotion to business than of Willis, when she never saw Steve again once he left the farm. Sharlene reminded Willis that Alice owns the company he works for. When Liz moaned about making things worse for those she loved by trying to help, Helen promised to help her learn to curb her generous impulses. Liz was crushed when Jim lit into her for destroying Pat and John's marriage. Barbara assured Pat of John's love and asked permission to speak objectively to John. Russ and Sharlene sensed how upset Pat was. Michael and Glenda worried over Marianne, who was more concerned about her parents. Willis doubted Carol's assertion she's changed because of him, believing she'd revert back to the Carol he first knew if he offered her a big juicy project. Russ and Sharlene star-gazed from the front seat of his car. Marianne explained to John she hadn't wanted to disappoint him since he always expected people to be perfect, but he believed his children no longer loved him and couldn't go back to Pat because he'll never know whether or not she's telling him what he should know about their life together.

JANUARY 20, 1976 (EP. #2916)
Willis tried to talk Vic out of letting Alice sit in on the meeting about the new project. Barbara told Angie not to expect John at the meeting. Carol gave the certified check to Barbara, who told Michael she learned John checked out of the hotel. Vic was surprised when Pam assured him she made sure Scott knows she prefers Vic. Angie protested when Willis accused Vic of protecting his buddy by not telling Pendleton that Robert had run out on the museum project. Alice didn't want the discussion to get side-tracked into personalities when Willis pushed Carol as architect but Vic felt she had the unethical precedent of going over budget. Ada told Ray about Gil having been a parole officer. Barbara asked Ada to get Gil to help them look for John without letting others know he was gone. Rachel insisted to Mac she can manage being alone during her pregnancy. Ken brought Rachel tools for fine detail work. Willis allayed Alice's fears that his close personal relationship with Carol would cause problems if she were assigned the new project. When Willis was sure Ray got his job because his mother was Mac's housekeeper, Ray pointed out Willis never had steady employment until Steve took him into his firm. Ray encouraged Alice to get more involved with the firm when he noticed she was overprotective of Sally, and she agreed as she didn't want to return to nursing as she'd be at the mercy of the hospital schedule. Clarice sniffed to Mac that Robert can't handle Iris, then Scott filled Mac in on the meeting. Ken thought it refreshing that Ada wasn't a mother who boasted she'd produced another Michelangelo. Willis was deflated when Carol announced to everyone that Robert, not her, was the perfect architect for this particular project. Michael and Barbara wondered what Marianne said to John to make him take off.

JANUARY 21, 1976 (EP. #2917)
Marianne told Michael about John's bitter attitude. They decided to try to lure John to the house by getting Pat out of there, but when they phoned her she refused to leave. Neil was surprised and Robert suspicious when Vic and Pam revealed Carol turned down the Pendleton project in favor of Robert. Iris asked Ken over to discuss the sculpture she commissioned for Mac's anniversary. Iris agreed when Mac requested Louise fill in (when Beatrice visits Sally) while he goes to Washington on business. Iris was displeased Robert's new assignment will take him to Washington, though she recalled that Mac's old flame Tracy DeWitt lived there with her diplomat husband Claude. Michael asked Dave to check on Pat now that John's disappeared. Vic scoffed at Pam's notion that Carol and Willis were in love. Marianne informed Pat that no one knows where John is. Pat told Dave she can't blame John for not forgiving her. Robert got Iris to agree when Ken suggested he make a head of Jamie. Neil told Mac that Robert was treating Clarice shabbily. Iris told Tracy that Mac was equally miserable in his marriage but felt obliged to stick it out since Rachel got herself pregnant.

Iris: "[INTO PHONE] Mrs. DeWitt, please. It's Iris Carrington. Thank you. [CUT TO LIMBO PHONE, ON TABLE IN A BOUDOIR. TRACY DEWITT PICKS IT UP]"
Tracy (Caroline McWilliams, Introduction Line) "Iris, darling! Is it really you?"
Iris: "Yes, Tracy. After all these years."

JANUARY 22, 1976 (EP. #2918)
Scott advised Clarice to see a doctor about her dizziness. Sharlene told Carol that Alice will be more involved in the business now that Sally's in school, since the hospital can't give her as flexible a schedule. Willis disapproved that Carol turned down the Washington project to stay in Bay City with him. Ada told Dave and Michael that Rachel was once able to track John down to a motel in a similar circumstance. Iris felt Mac was filling his staff with strays when Ada said he's given Ray a job over in the complex. Liz accused Jim of hurting Helen by catering to Beatrice so much. Rocky was pleased as Beatrice filled Louise in on serving Rachel. Beatrice disapproved when she and Jim arrived to find Alice had sent Sharlene home to be there when Sally came home from school. Louise found Jamie and Dennis making sandwiches in the kitchen. Rocky disapproved when Iris browbeat Louise into returning home. Beatrice worried to Ada that Alice would neglect Sally for her work. Clarice informed Dave she already knew she was pregnant. When Willis suspected Sharlene convinced Alice to work more in the office to prevent him from getting too much authority, Carol suggested he enlist Beatrice to convince Alice she's needed more at home.

JANUARY 23, 1976 (EP. #2919)
Pat didn't enthuse over Michael's plans to talk to Rachel. Pat admitted to Liz she knew about Marianne's pregnancy, then said she'd never be able to look at Liz again without remembering that she destroyed her happiness by meddling. Barbara and Jim worried about Pat. Beatrice told Rachel she's inclined to talk to Alice about neglecting Sally. Pat told Rachel she'd always been grateful for the way she'd once helped John, and Rachel regretted it never made them better friends. Rachel recalled it was the Sandpiper hotel on Marble Road near the Marina that John had holed up in. Liz apologized to Barbara, then cried to Jim about Missy and Susan not wanting her in their lives. At the Sandpiper, Michael explained to John that Pat concealed things from him to protect Marianne. Raymond revealed to Rachel he'd suggested Alice spend more time in the office when she worried she was becoming over-protective of Alice. To protect Mac's relationship with Dennis, Rachel made Beatrice promise not to tell Mac of Iris's attempts to intimidate her. John told Barbara that Pat loved someone else when she married him and their marriage hasn't been totally satisfactory in certain ways. Barbara took his face in her hands and drew him to her when John said he's never been able to cross the chasm between Pat and him that resulted in inadequacies at home.

Liz: "I only want to make sure things don't go wrong for those I love."
Jim: "I understand that, Liz, but you've always made things worse, first for your children and now with mine."

JANUARY 26, 1976 (EP. #2920)
Michael convinced Pat that Barbara's experience in logical arguments made her the best choice to talk to John. Iris encouraged Mac to take the trip to Washington when he was reluctant to leave Rachel. Jamie and Dennis left for a swim meet. Neil told Angie now that he was vice-president of Delaney Architects, they can go public with their engagement. Willis and Pam congratulated Neil and Angie with differing degrees of enthusiasm. Jim realized Barbara knew more about John/Pat than she let on. Jim effected a reconciliation between Pat and Liz. Neil told Angie he'll give her time to get over Willis. Iris dragged Jamie away from the victory celebration to tell him he'll be modeling for Ken. Jim and Liz kept Pat company. Angie didn't care when Willis admitted Neil would make a much better husband. Barbara kissed John and said they'd work out whatever was best for all of them.

Iris: "Rachel's not the first woman to have a baby."
Mac: "It's the first for me."
Iris: "Daddy!"
Mac: "Of course I mean except you."
Iris: "Well, thank you very much for remembering. [SHE TURNS AWAY]"

Ken (Kelly Monahan, Exit Line): "I'm sorry. I have a late evening class at the Community Center. I'll get back to you about our little anniversary present for Rachel and Mac. Goodnight, Mr. Delaney."

JANUARY 27, 1976 (EP. #2921)
Mac didn't want her involved when Rachel described Beatrice's worries over Alice and Sally. Clarice insisted to Dave she would be having the baby, but she wouldn't use it to trap the father. Carol warned Willis that if he didn't try again to get Alice to spend less time in the office, she would try herself. Marianne cried to Alice about breaking up Pat and John. Ken told Rachel that if she keeps working hard, they might exhibit her work at Lyle Sansone's gallery. Beatrice complained to Ray when Sally told them Alice wasn't home. Dave warned Mac that Iris may resent Rachel for using her housekeeper while Mac's away. Carol begged Scot to help her make sure Lowell appreciated Willis's work. Ken critiqued Marianne's sketches. Alice was happy to find Sally playing parcheesi with Ray, who made Willis's head turn by mentioning being a family man without a family. Willis tried to convince Ray that it was important for Beatrice to approve of how Alice is bringing up Sally.

Ken (William Lyman, Introduction Line): [KEN IS HOLDING A SMALL PIECE OF SCULPTURE UP TO THE LIGHT WHILE RACHEL WATCHES] Did you make a sketch of this first?"

JANUARY 28, 1976 (EP. #2922)
Sharlene encouraged Russ to speak to Michael to find out what was troubling Pat. Ada spoke encouragingly to Pat, who cried on her shoulder. Glenda and Marianne agreed Ken was very easy to talk to. Jamie sat for Ken, then Ada offered to let them use her house. John rejected Michael's offer to help him forget about being shut out of his family. Russ was dissatisfied with the twins' vague explanations. Barbara was unhappy when Pat shared her intimate family problems. Refusing to take up with a married man again, Barbara insisted John explain to Pat why he can't go back to her.

JANUARY 29, 1976 (EP. #2923)
Dave encouraged Clarice to seek advice from Rachel. Ada advised Angie not to rush into a marriage she wasn't sure of. Beatrice warned Rocky not to openly defy Iris. Beatrice asked Jim if Rocky and Louise can come with her to dinner at his place. Iris asked Vic to explain to Robert that Carol might steal assignments if he goes out of town. Clarice gave an engagement present to Neil and Angie. While Robert helped Dennis with trigonometry, Iris entertained Louise's impatient swain Rocky. Angie felt Clarice might find her way back to Robert when Vic and Pam told her Iris will likely grow impatient if Robert goes to Washington. Jim entertained Beatrice, Rocky, and Louise. Clarice confided to Ada she was pregnant.

JANUARY 30, 1976 (EP. #2924)
An upset Barbara fled before confiding in Rachel when Dave dropped by. Willis sniped at Sharlene when she mentioned Emma wonders about his relationship with Angie. When Dave asked him to find Clarice a job that gave her more responsibility, Mac ordered Scott and Ray to hire Clarice as their joint secretary. Alice thought it odd when Pat mentioned Barbara knew where John's new apartment was but Pat didn't. Pam apologized for misjudging her when Carol offered to help Vic track down Willis. John told Pat he was foolish to believe they ever shared their lives, and insisted she'd never loved him. Willis urged Beatrice to speak to Alice about her concerns. As Vic and Mac discussed business, Rachel asked Barbara to visit while Mac was away. Pat told Dave there was an accumulation of bitterness in John she'd never suspected, then agreed when he insisted on taking her out to dinner.

John: "You wanted children because of the abortion you had before you knew me."
Pat: "Oh, now we come to that."
John: "You loved them more than you loved me."

FEBRUARY 2, 1976 (EP. #2925)
Mac and Rachel wondered what was troubling Barbara. Willis brought flowers for Alice and told her to ask Beatrice over to babysit Sally so he can take her out to dinner. Jamie said he'd take care of Rachel when Alice phoned to ask Beatrice over to babysit. Dave offered to talk to John if Pat can't confide in her family about Marianne's abortion. Angie and Neil wondered why Pat was out with Dave. Mac and Rachel left for the airport. Sally told Beatrice she was glad Alice was keeping busy and not worrying about her. Angie told Neil that John and Pat's difficulties discouraged her from marriage. Iris gave Robert Tracy's number to pass on to Mac as she was once very important to him.

FEBRUARY 3, 1976 (EP. #2926)
Ray told Ada it won't be easy to talk Beatrice out of her old-fashioned ideas of motherhood. Robert told Neil that though he's sick of the life he's led since Lenore left him, he won't hurt Clarice by encouraging her to think he's the man of her dreams, and he'll stick with Iris since they deserve each other and can keep each other from hurting other people. Neil warned Vic against trying to talk Robert out of the project. Ray and Scott told Clarice that the company will pay for her secretarial courses. Iris scarcely paid attention when Robert showed her the final plans for her guest house. Robert wasn't swayed to remain in town by Iris's offer of influential friends who can bring work to him. Angie told Michael and Glenda that she'd seen Pat having dinner with Dave. When Ray wanted to take Beatrice out to dinner, Louise agreed to come over and fill in. Robert convinced Iris to let Louise go. Vic and Pam went in to the bedroom after she agreed to accompany him to Washington. While feeding Nancy, Clarice told Ada she doesn't want Rachel to think badly of her.

FEBRUARY 4, 1976 (EP. #2927)
Though he found it odd, Michael told Pat he didn't object to her going out with Dave. Ken was impressed by Rachel's artistic experimentation. Ken and Jamie let Dennis in on the secret commission. Dave alerted Russ to Pat's need to have her self-image strengthened, then finessed another dinner with Pat. Mac didn't object when Robert considered bringing Iris with him to Washington. Neil couldn't deny it when Clarice (who revealed her pregnancy) felt Robert didn't care about her. Barbara confessed to Rachel she was in love with a married man, but that she liked his wife and wondered if any man's worth betraying that kind of trust. After talking to John, Liz realized her suspicions about his feelings for Barbara may have been astute. Ada made a big mystery out of it until finally telling Rachel that Clarice was pregnant. Dennis watched fascinated as Jamie sat for Ken. Dave told Pat not to limit herself to what her children approve of. John insisted to Barbara she's been his only link to sanity.

FEBRUARY 5, 1976 (EP. #2928)
Sharlene explained to Carol she can understand Willis better by realizing he'd always been in Steve's shadow. Carol told Sharlene not to feel intimidated that Russ once fell for Iris. Ray agreed to stay for lunch with Alice and Sally. Willis blew a gasket when Carol admitted Sharlene told her casually he'd taken Alice out to dinner. Alice ordered Liz to stay out of Pat and John's troubles. Sharlene felt the sky was lighting up when Russ proposed over lunch at Tallboys. Alice told Angie that Neil wouldn't resent Willis so much if Angie didn't defend him so openly. Liz thought people would turn to her after Mary died, but Russ urged her to wait till they came to her. Willis refreshed Sharlene's memory about the time he was in San Diego as part of the navy: he, Chuck, and Lou entered a dive full of bimbos, then Willis rushed blindly out when Chuck went to speak to a girl who turned out to be Sharlene.

Russ: "And I... well, look... I don't know how to say this."
Sharlene: "Say what?"
Russ: "Will you marry me?"
Sharlene: "[QUICKLY] Yes!"
Russ: "You will?"
Sharlene: "Sure I will. Did you think I wouldn't?"

Willis: "[END OF FLASHBACK. WILLIS IS STILL SPEAKING] And that's how I found out how some girls made out in San Diego. [SHE JUST STARES AT HIM] You really think Russ wants to hear about that? [HE SMILES AT HER] Now, I'll just fix that drink you suggested-- and you've got things to take care of out in the kitchen, right? [SHARLENE GETS TO HER FEET AND GOES SLOWLY TO THE KITCHEN, WHILE WILLIS STARES AFTER HER. BEYOND THE ROOM DIVIDER, SHARLENE LEANS AGAINST THE WALL AND COVERS HER FACE WITH HER HANDS. FADE OUT]"

FEBRUARY 6, 1976 (EP. #2929)
Iris encouraged Tracy to drop in at the Merrill house and surprise Mac. Iris visited Rachel and insisted Louise come over when Beatrice goes out. Neil was surprised that Robert cared so much about Pat and John's problems. John blasted Dave for insinuating himself into his family problems. Rachel disbelieved Iris's implications of Mac's stay in Washington. Rocky seethed when Iris spoke down to Louise. Iris overheard Clarice tell Rachel she was pregnant with Robert's child. Robert failed to convince John he had a wonderful home life. Mac chatted with a flirtatious Tracy until Cecile, the Merrill maid, told him he had a call from Rachel. Neil warned Robert that Lenore lives in Washington now. Dave told Clarice that hearing about the baby may be just the anchor that Robert needs. Iris suggested Robert marry her right away so they wouldn't have to deceive people.

FEBRUARY 9, 1976 (EP. #2930)
Iris countered every one of Robert's arguments to get him to elope before he goes to Washington. Dave promised to help her handle Iris after he convinced Clarice to level with Robert. Glenda and Marianne cooked dinner for Pat. Barbara told John he can't expect a warm welcome until he official decides if he wants to continue their relationship or go back to Pat. Neil told Angie he won't ask Robert to be his best man after the way he's treated Clarice. Angie realized Clarice was pregnant when she came over with Dave trying to track Robert down. Michael realized Liz had been right all along when he found John uncorking a wine bottle at Barbara's. In the greenhouse, Rocky tried to kiss Louise, but she made him hide when Iris came in. Louise made Rocky reveal himself when Iris announced her wedding plans, but Iris decided to use them both as witnesses. Pat and Glenda wondered why Michael now urged Pat to get on with her life. Iris threw Dave and Clarice out when they came over.

Robert: "I've always admired how you take things day by day-- I hope our marriage will have that same grace."
Iris: "It will, I promise."

FEBRUARY 10, 1976 (EP. #2931)
Sharlene was reticent about sharing her problems with Carol. Rachel wondered if Ken resented wasting his time teaching a rich lady art, but he said it supplemented his income. Clarice sobbed to Rachel about the damage Iris was likely doing to her with Robert now. Willis wouldn't tell Carol why Sharlene was avoiding him, then warned Sharlene he'll be forced to track Chuck and Lou down if he needed to protect himself. Mac tried not to be offensive when he insisted he was happily married, but Tracy lamented how dull Claude is and regretted she'd let Iris split her and Mac up. Rachel and Ada worried that Iris would hurt Clarice. Ada made excuses when Rachel heard her talking to Ken about a sculpture. Michael told Russ that Pat should get interested in Dave now that John is with Barbara. Dave didn't deny to Russ he's been seeing Pat. Willis was miffed when Mac requested Vic and not him join him in Washington. Sharlene told Russ she has a problem she needs to work out. Ada told Clarice she was a match for Iris.

FEBRUARY 11, 1976 (EP. #2932)
Angie warned Willis that Carol will dump him when she's got all the assignments he can give her. Neil, Vic, and Pam hoped Robert got the message about the meeting. When Willis groused about being treated like an outsider in his own firm, Carol advised him to convince Alice he wants to carry on Steve's firm for Sally's sake. Alice observed as Vic gave Robert and Neil instructions about Washington. Willis was distressed that Alice had no time for him since she was having dinner with Ray. Iris convinced Robert that Mac will be so happy to learn they've married he won't mind Robert had to delay his flight to Washington. Iris took the phone from Robert to convince Pam to change the Pendleton meeting to tomorrow. Pam phoned to explain to Mac, Lowell, Neil, and Vic that Robert had to delay his flight. Carol told Willis to use Robert's "leeway" to convince Alice of Vic's inability to handle Robert effectively, especially now that Robert has powerful support from Iris. Pat and Sally played with her trains when Ray came over to take Alice to dinner.

FEBRUARY 12, 1976 (EP. #2933)
Russ felt John had reason to feel shut out when Marianne admitted he was the only one who hadn't known she had an abortion. Carol and Willis realized they need a way to neutralize Iris helping Robert. Louise embraced Iris on learning she planned to marry Robert tonight outside city limits. Willis threatened to tell everyone Sharlene was a San Diego bar girl if she tries to prevent him from taking over Steve's company. Rocky suggested she speak to Jim when Beatrice wondered if Alice were cross with her. Marianne told Glenda that Mel made her uncomfortable, and couldn't believe it when Michael told her John's taken up with Barbara. Liz fumed when Beatrice interrupted her meal with Jim and Helen. Ray explained to Alice he looks desolate because Olive is going to marry someone else who will be a father to his sons, then warned her about Beatrice's feelings. Willis warned Carol not to fall for Sharlene's Miss Country Bumpkin act. Sharlene begged Russ not to rush her into anything. Iris fretted when she couldn't locate Robert.

Sharlene: "I know you. You'll stop at nothing--"
Willis: "Good, then we understand each other."
Sharlene: "You'd even marry Alice to get control of Steve's business, wouldn't you?"
Willis: "If that's what has to be done, yes."
Sharlene: "Then don't count on my cooperation. [SHE STARTS OUT]"
Willis: "And don't you count on my keeping your ugly little secrets from Russ, either!"

FEBRUARY 13, 1976 (EP. #2934)
Jamie and Dennis admired Rachel's abstract sculpture. Clarice asked Rachel to be there with her when she tells Robert the truth. Iris was annoyed when Ken bedeviled her about Jamie's bust. Rachel smiled encouragingly at Clarice when Scott told them Robert's delayed his trip until tomorrow morning. Rachel smiled to see Louise straightening Rocky's tie. John told Barbara he loved her, but she required he be honest with Pat about their relationship. Jim was happy to see Pat at Alice's, but she revealed she plans to live her life without John. Beatrice was surprised when Pat told her Alice was out with Ray. Before Iris herded everyone out, Louise gave her an orchid and boutonnieres to Rocky and Robert. Scott offered to drive Clarice to Robert's. Barbara refused when Liz begged her to help reunite Pat and John. Rachel promised not to tell when Ken and the boys were forced to show her the bust. Clarice and Scott realized Robert wasn't home. Robert and Iris were married.

'CUT TO JUSTICE OF THE PEACE LIVING ROOM. JUSTICE KERWIN STANDS WITH ROBERT AND IRIS BEFORE HIM, AND LOUISE ON IRIS'S LEFT SIDE, ROCKY ON ROBERT'S RIGHT]'
Kerwin: "And now in the authority vested in me by law, I pronounce you, Robert and Iris, man and wife. [HE SMILES AT THEM] You may kiss your bride, Mr. Delaney."
Robert: "Thank you. [HE KISSES IRIS, THEN LOUISE APPROACHES HER]"
Louise: "Congratulations, Mrs. Carring--"
Iris: "[WARNINGLY] Louise."
Louise: "Mrs. Delaney, forgive me... I'm so happy I don't know what I'm saying."
Iris: "[SMILING] That's perfectly all right, Louise, I know exactly how you feel."
Rocky: "[HOLDING OUT HIS HAND TO ROBERT] Mr. Delaney, congratulations, sir."
Robert: "Thanks, but my best man shouldn't be so formal... It's Robert, okay? [HE SHAKES HANDS WITH HIM, AS IRIS SMILES AT LOUISE AND TAKES HIS ARM. LOUISE BEGINS TO CRY, AND ROCKY PUTS HIS ARM AROUND HER. FADE OUT]"

Note: Iris and Robert's may be AW's only Friday the Thirteenth wedding.

FEBRUARY 16, 1976 (EP. #2935)
Pat resisted Alice's efforts to help her sort out her feelings. Iris decided to announce her marriage at Mac's anniversary party, then Robert forbade her from using her influence to get him work. When Clarice and Scott came over to say they couldn't find Robert, Ada phoned Neil and learned he was likely with Iris. Willis warned Alice that Robert missing his meeting made him unreliable and a risk to the firm's reputation. Alice insisted Willis misunderstood if he felt her becoming involved in the firm demonstrated a lack of faith in anyone's abilities. Alice smoothed things over when Russ let Willis know he didn't appreciate the way he spoke to Sharlene. Louise confided to Rocky that Iris forsook a big society wedding because she was humiliated when her New York friends descended on her after she canceled her wedding to Russ. Iris hung up when Neil phoned for Robert. Scott and Neil both provided a friendly ear to Clarice. Sharlene was aghast that Willis was willing to blackmail her to protect his plans. Pat told Russ that John may be right to believe the children have always been more important to her than he is.

FEBRUARY 17, 1976 (EP. #2936)
In her hotel room, Iris let Tracy weasel it out of her that she married Robert to rescue him from a girl who was hoping to trick him into marriage by pretending to have got herself in trouble. Tracy lamented she married Claude, who keeps her locked up on their dreary Virginia farm after she married him on the rebound from Mac. Rachel and Ada thought it odd Robert was being so hard to track down. Vic told Helen that he visited Lenore, who's doing well. Barbara begged John to level with Pat after Jim asked her to intervene in their situation because of her objectivity. Iris insisted Tracy come to Bay City to attend her party for Mac. Angie disapproved when Vic, Neil, and Pam wondered what Robert saw in Iris. Iris phoned to give Louise the party guest list. Neil was hurt when Angie declined to accompany Vic and Pam to dinner with him. Liz told Louise she's not sure she can attend a party for Mac and Rachel, then Rachel lit into Liz for threatening Beatrice with telling Alice that she was taking advantage of her and Sally to see more of Jim. Neil was horrified when Iris picked up the phone in Robert's hotel room.

FEBRUARY 18, 1976 (EP. #2937)
Glenda told Pat that Michael would feel less guilty if she had a life of her own. John found it extremely embarrassing when Jim advised him his marriage was just suffering from the empty nest syndrome. Dave was pleased when Russ asked him on a double date with Pat. Pat was upset at how bitter Michael was toward John. Michael convinced Pat to accept Russ's invite. Neither Willis nor Alice looked forward to Iris's party. Willis was irritated when Ray came over. After Pat left with Dave, Michael was surprised when John arrived to speak with Pat, but he then threw John out. Russ and Carol wondered about the tension between Sharlene and Willis. Jim let Ray know Beatrice seemed depressed. Despite Rachel's feelings about her, Carol told Willis she'll attend the party if it'll help his career. Dave encouraged Pat to find a regular job, although her entire job history consisted of working in a daycare center one summer. Dave and Sharlene wondered why they'd been invited to Iris's party. Barbara flew into a needy John's arms after he implied he'd spoken to Pat.

FEBRUARY 19, 1976 (EP. #2938)
Beatrice told Rachel she's decided not to see Jim any longer to save him any more embarrassment. Iris and Robert swore Lowell to secrecy about their marriage. Neil refused to give Clarice Robert's number in Washington. Ada and Nancy welcomed Mac home, then Ada said she'd get Ray to escort her to the party. Tracy told Iris and Robert that she was able to ditch Claude and looks forward to meeting Mac's wife. Neil told Ada that Iris followed Robert to Washington. Ken lectured Rachel about divine discontent, dynamics, and her extraordinary creativity. Clarice told Mac she was fine, then Scott invited her to the party. Rachel and Dennis watched as Ken sculpted Jamie. Rachel urged Beatrice and Ray to visit Sally, though Beatrice had just told Ray not to make a pest of himself with Alice. Iris told Mac the party will have several surprises for him.

FEBRUARY 20, 1976 (EP. #2939)
Louise told Rocky that Mac and Rachel were also married in secret. Mac worried about Rachel antagonizing Liz, but she vowed not to let Liz harass Beatrice. Carol was hurt when Willis announced he'd be having dinner with Alice rather than taking her to the party. Sharlene vowed not to let Willis destroy Alice to get Steve's business, but backed down when he phoned the hospital and threatened to talk to Russ. It upset Angie to have to tell Emma that Willis was involved with Carol now and she was engaged to Neil. Iris introduced Liz to Tracy. Robert phoned to tell Iris that he'd arranged to have Neil pick him up from the airport. Jim, whom Rachel had phoned, convinced Beatrice to accompany him to the party. Neil, who'd intended to take Clarice with him to the airport, realized he'd been out-foxed by Iris, who told him Karl will be picking Robert up. Angie, Neil, and Scott planned to sneak Clarice into Iris's den. Sharlene threw herself into Emma's arms and cried about Willis not letting her marry Russ by holding over her head the shameful things she did when she was grief crazy over Floyd's death. Iris dragged Liz over to congratulate Mac and Rachel for having survived their first year of wedded bliss. Mac introduced Rachel to Tracy. Before Iris could get Tracy to distract Scott, he took Clarice over to see Robert. Iris came right over to tear Robert away and tell everyone they had an announcement to make.

Tracy: "Now, Iris, you sly thing, did you intend that the architect would share it with you when he built it?"
Iris: "Oh, no, I had other plans then--"
Tracy: "So you settled for Robert?"
Iris: "Tracy, stop putting words in my mouth."
Tracy: "Just trying to figure out the enigmatic Iris--"

FEBRUARY 23, 1976 (EP. #2940)
After Iris announced her marriage, Liz embraced her, and Rachel was concerned when Clarice rushed out blindly. Mac then Liz toasted the new couple. Rachel let Liz know she won't let her come between Beatrice and Jim. Fearing Iris might take the baby from her, Clarice made Scott, Neil, and Angie promise not to talk to Robert about it. Rocky told Louise that Iris decided to make the announcement when the tall blonde girl came in. Dennis told Jamie after he learned from Iris and Robert of their marriage. Mac was moved by Jamie's bust. Liz complained to Helen that Jim was neglecting his family to waste time on Rachel's housekeeper. Angie asked to be taken home when Neil said something mean about Willis. Clarice refused Scott's offer of financial help. Rachel overheard Iris in the serving pantry admitting to Tracy she'd married Robert to save him from Clarice's mistake.

FEBRUARY 24, 1976 (EP. #2941)
Willis wasn't any help when Russ and Alice worried about Sharlene. Michael tried to convince Pat not to confide her marital problems to Barbara. Jim came over to make sure Helen wasn't upset he hadn't invited her to the party, and she said she'll write to Lenore about Robert's marriage. Jim thought it unpardonable when Liz said his standards have gone downhill. Russ told Alice that Sharlene was afraid of Willis's mean streak, then Emma phoned to explain Sharlene needs time to get used to the changes in her life. Michael didn't elaborate when he advised Pat to move on the way John has. Alice didn't want to listen to Liz's grievances about Beatrice. Carol conceded to Willis it was important he keep in Alice's good graces. Sharlene nightmared that Willis gloated as Russ rejected her on their wedding day. Emma vowed to go to Bay City to stop Willis if Sharlene was unable.

Emma: "You make too much of it. You think Burt hasn't forgiven me for things?"
Sharlene: "You never did what I've done."
Emma: "How do you know... I was young and hot-blooded once, too..."

FEBRUARY 25, 1976 (EP. #2942)
Mac told Rachel he believes in her artistic ability. Robert criticized Iris for being rude to Louise. Though he felt uncomfortable, Marianne insisted Michael join her and fellow art student Daryll Stevens for lunch. Dennis assured Iris he was glad Robert was his new father. Rachel promised not to reveal Clarice's pregnancy, but informed Clarice that Iris rushed Robert into marriage because she already knew. Robert had to settle for Neil's less than gracious congratulations. Ken noticed some improvement in Marianne's sketches. Michael suggested Marianne get Daryll to pose for her. Robert told Mac he'd hoped to have more children after he lost his baby son in a car accident. When Rachel let Iris know she knows why she married Robert, Iris threatened to ruin her marriage if she breathes a word.

Marianne: "Well, here it is, Daryll."
Daryll: (Introduction Line) "It's a lot neater than my room at the dorm."

FEBRUARY 26, 1976 (EP. #2943)
Rachel and Dave talked about how they can help Clarice. Pat insisted to Liz she and John had problems long before Marianne's abortion. Liz failed to convince Pat that Beatrice was monopolizing Jim. Worried about the long history of bitterness between Rachel and Pat, John told Barbara not to say a word about their relationship to Rachel. After Rachel found her in John's arms, Barbara said it was all right since John has leveled with Pat. Russ was glad to hear Pat agreed to lunch with Dave. Jim explained to a disappointed Helen that there are too many powerful echoes from their previous lives for them to be more than friends, especially now that he's grown fond of Beatrice. Barbara admitted to Rachel she's not ready to decide between a career and a family life. Barbara fled in the face of Pat's graciousness. John told Barbara that Pat sometimes hides from unpleasant things by pretending they haven't happened.

FEBRUARY 27, 1976 (EP. #2944)
Mac fretted about Rachel being alone when Beatrice announced her dinner plans with Jim. Robert objected when Iris wanted Mac to come over alone to see his sketches. Ada worried about the danger when Rachel boasted that Iris has trapped herself. Sharlene asked Carol to keep her job open for her. Beatrice offered to sit with Sally in Sharlene's absence, but Alice was considering Pat. Willis asked Alice to dinner, but Ray had beat him to it. Mac was obstinate when Iris wanted him to come over, but Rachel convinced him she'll be safe in the house alone. Rachel warned Iris to drop the scheme she was hatching with Tracy or she'll tell Mac why she really married Robert. Willis told Vic they shouldn't demand time from Alice she needs at home. Alice sympathized with Ray about missing his kids. Alice assured Sharlene that Russ loved her. Pam alerted Vic that Willis and Carol may be working on a new project without his knowledge. Rachel phoned to tell Mac that though Jamie hadn't come home, he needn't rush home on her account. Rachel passed out after trying to contact Mac again.

Rachel: "[TWO-WAY] Iris, I've got to speak to Mac."
Iris: "Again?"
Rachel: "Yes, just put him on, please."
Iris: "Rachel, he's gone into the den with Robert and they don't want to be disturbed. [RACHEL CAN'T SPEAK] Look, I'll have him call you when they're finished. Is that all right, dear? [RACHEL STARTS TO SAY SOMETHING, BUT CLOSES HER EYES AND SLIDES TO THE FLOOR, LEAVING THE TELEPHONE DANGLING] Rachel? Oh, really, Rachel... that girl has no manners. [SHE HANGS UP THE PHONE AND GOES BACK TO THE BAR AND GOES ON FIXING HER DRINK. CUT TO THE CORY LIVING ROOM, WITH RACHEL LYING UNCONSCIOUS ON THE FLOOR. FADE OUT]"

MARCH 1, 1976 (EP. #2945)
Tracy admitted to Iris she still finds Mac attractive and agreed to give him a private tour of the new guest house. Ray made himself scarce so Alice could commiserate with Russ. Sharlene insisted to Russ her leaving had nothing to do with Willis. Sharlene told Emma she'll lose Russ if she tells him the truth. Carol refused Willis's suggestion she fire Sharlene. Iris told Tracy that Robert's previous wife made him miserable then left without explanation. Iris helped Tracy besiege Mac, who worried after phoning home and getting a busy signal. Pam told Vic that Alice was too shrewd to be taken in by Willis. Emma told Sharlene that Molly started putting on airs after running with a wild crowd at school, and that Burt's mother was hurt she longer goes by the name she was baptized with since Molly was named Rhoda after her. Iris was irritated when Robert worried about Rachel, whom Tracy professed to like. Mac phoned for an ambulance after finding Rachel unconscious. Mac phoned to ask Robert to break the news to Ada.

MARCH 2, 1976 (EP. #2946)
The attendants put Rachel on a stretcher and carried her out. Dave canceled his date with Pat after a call from the hospital. Robert arrived to take Ada to the hospital. Glenda told Michael and Pat that her parents argue all the time, and that her brother Leonard left home after falling in with some rough kids. Mac told Ada that Rachel was hemorrhaging. Tracy wondered how Iris could be so indifferent to something that's causing Mac pain. Barbara felt awkward when John professed his gratitude. Pat implored John not to keep rebuffing the children. John moaned to Barbara that Michael looks at him with such contempt. Pat urged Michael to make amends with John. Dave thought Rachel delirious when she mumbled to Mac about why he didn't come home when she'd called him again.

MARCH 3, 1976 (EP. #2947)
Ray and Angie told Ada not to give up hope. Emma informed Molly she was aware she's been skipping school, but Molly was no longer interested in being the first Frame to attend college. Sharlene rejected Carol's offer of help. Angie let Neil know Rachel was in hospital. Carol worried about the risk Willis was taking keeping the Jamieson and Pratt project under wraps. Pam alerted Vic that Willis and Carol were acting fishy. Ada asked Beatrice to bring Jamie over to her house. Willis accused Angie of feeling he had selfish reasons for wanting to help out Mac during this crisis. Dave told Russ he probably won't be able to save the baby. Emma suggested to Sharlene they return to Bay City to face Willis together, bringing Molly with them to help steady her down. Dave and Ada wondered why Rachel kept referring to making a second call to Mac.

'ORDWAY KITCHEN, SAME TIME. EMMA IS CLEARING BREAKFAST DISHES AS MOLLY ENTERS, WEARING A BATHROBE.'
Emma: "[TURNING] Well, you finally got up!"
Molly (Introduction Line): "Why didn't you wake me?"
...
Molly: "Just coffee... black."
Emma: "Rhoda Ordway!"
Molly: "Ma... my name isn't Rhoda anymore."
Emma: "I beg your pardon... Molly Ordway!"
...
Emma: "People hereabouts hand names down from one generation to the next... My Grandma's name was Emma, and her sister was Sharlene, too--"
Molly: "It's so boring!"

MARCH 4, 1976 (EP. #2948)
Beatrice and Ada were impressed when an emotional Willis offered to let Jamie spend the night at his place. Louise had a difficult time hiding the truth from Jamie and Dennis. Scott and Ray worried about Rachel. Jim felt she must have misunderstood when Barbara said John had a frank discussion with Pat last week, then Beatrice phoned with Rachel's news. Willis helped calm Jamie down when Ada told him Rachel had collapsed. Beatrice blamed herself. Russ didn't bend when Iris insisted on seeing Mac. Willis told Jamie that he was a lot younger when his own mother got sick and died. As Clarice comforted Ada, Iris fumed about Scott being a disloyal attorney by siding with Clarice.

Tracy: "[TO RUSS] Hello, I'm Tracy DeWitt."
Russ: "How do you do. [HE TURNS TO GO]"
Tracy: "You haven't told me your name."
Russ: "Sorry, Russ Matthews."
Tracy: "Oh, so you're the notorious Dr. Matthews."
Russ: "What does that mean?"
Tracy: "Iris has told me all about you, haven't you, dear?"
Iris: "Haven't I what?"
Tracy: "Never mind..."

Notes: This episode marked the return of Linda, last seen on May 1, 1975. Added type to the "Cast/Set/Prop" sheet: "Another Milestone!"

MARCH 5, 1976 (EP. #2949)
Russ threatened to call security if Iris didn't stop insisting on accompanying Ada in to see Mac. Marianne told Sally that Michael switched from track to boxing. Pat told Alice she'll enlist Russ's help to smooth things over between John and the kids. Ada convinced Mac not to consider himself bad luck for the people he loves. After Scott left the waiting room, Iris warned Clarice to be gone before Robert arrives. After Tracy made implications about Iris's conversation with Clarice, Iris admitted to Robert she'd asked Clarice to leave to save him embarrassment. Gil returned from Chicago to comfort Ada. Mac gave Dave permission to operate on Rachel. Russ phoned Alice and Pat to tell them Rachel was critical. Michael refused to believe it when Barbara insisted she hadn't started her affair with John until after he left Pat. After reminding Iris of her promise they'd have more freedom after marriage, Robert asked Clarice if they can be friends. Mac wept in Ada's arms.

Mac: "If you have to make a choice between Rachel and our baby, save her, please."
Dave: "I'll do my best but sometimes doctors don't decide that."

MARCH 8, 1976 (EP. #2950)
Mac and Ada were devastated when Dave told them Rachel's baby boy didn't survive the operation. Ray came over to tell Alice and Sally that Rachel's baby was in danger, then Willis dropped by with Jamie and Dennis. Michael told Glenda he suspects John lied to Barbara about leveling with Pat. After Robert failed to convince Iris to take Tracy home, Dave broke the news about the baby. Ada and Gil prevented Iris from seeing Mac. Dave and Linda cared for Rachel. Ray and Willis argued about Alice's role in the firm. Dave told Gil that Rachel suffered a premature separation of the placenta.

MARCH 9, 1976 (EP. #2951)
Pat told Liz she intends to become more self-sufficient. Molly was excited Sharlene bought her a new dress, but Emma worried about her putting on airs. Barbara fled when Liz came to encourage Jim to spend more time with Helen. Willis warned Carol they can't trust Pam. Liz begged Barbara to help reconcile John and Pat. Dave refused when Michael asked him to find out if Pat knew about John and Barbara. Helen told Jim she thinks a cruise might get her out of the winter doldrums. Pam warned Vic that it seems like Willis is keeping a new project secret. Barbara showed up at the Randolph house, but fled without talking to Pat when Michael gave her the cold shoulder.

MARCH 10, 1976 (EP. #2952)
Mac wept tears of joy when Rachel awakened briefly. Alice and Sally were surprised when Sharlene, Emma, and Molly showed up on their doorstep. Dave told Ada and Gil they might have been able to save the baby if Rachel had been found earlier. Dennis kept Iris company until Robert came to wonder why Rachel didn't try to contact Mac when she was in pain. Alice was pleased to hear Sharlene invite Russ over. Alice assured Emma that Vic and John would protect her from Willis. Robert tried to help him when Iris nagged Mac about coming over to her house for a rest. Russ happily kissed Sharlene. Mac ordered Robert to take Iris home. Rachel sobbed about failing Mac after realizing she's lost her baby.

MARCH 11, 1976 (EP. #2953)
Michael and Glenda discussed how to find a missing John. Beatrice phoned to tell Jim and Barbara about Rachel's relapse. Neil sung to Nancy but failed to interest Angie in wedding plans. Gil offered to track down John for Jim. When Barbara told him she'd told Michael that Pat knows all about them, John promised to make up the hurt he's caused her. After Angie and Clarice took Nancy upstairs, Gil came home and told Neil that Rachel relapsed on learning of her miscarriage. Glenda met Beatrice when Michael came to tell Jim that John has walked out on his family. Michael told John he was ashamed of him for deceiving Barbara and humiliating Pat. Pat stood unnoticed in the doorway when John told Barbara he never knew what real love was until she took him in her arms the night after he found out about Marianne's abortion.

MARCH 12, 1976 (EP. #2954)
Dave and Linda dreaded telling Mac they weren't optimistic about Rachel's recovery. Ken brought a sculpture for Rachel. Vic and Pam worried Willis was unable to handle a project as big as Harold Jamieson's. Tracy admitted to Iris she intends to renew her old acquaintance with Scott. Tracy amused Ken when Iris when to get his check. Liz accused John of turning into a bitter cynic. Vic and Pam brought Willis's actions to John's attention. Mac allowed Iris to visit Rachel with him. Alice criticized Liz for being thoughtlessly rude to Emma. Scott warned Tracy not to let Iris use her against Rachel. Alice told John she felt Willis never meant to go over Vic's head. Rachel cried that her baby died because Mac wouldn't come home when she needed him.

MARCH 15, 1976: Pre-empted for airings of a special 90-minute episode of the soap opera, "The Doctors" and the series, "American Travel."

MARCH 16, 1976 (EP. #2955)
Mac and Ada told Gil, Louise, Rocky, and Iris that Rachel was delirious. Liz came to the student lounge to alarm Michael, Marianne, and Glenda about Pat. Tracy and Scott discussed Iris's animosity toward Clarice. A depressed Pat, who'd locked herself in her bedroom, revealed to her children she now knows the truth about John. Iris begged Mac, then Ada, then Dave, to convince Mac to come home for a rest. Rocky and Louise came home to tell Dennis, Tracy, and Scott that Rachel took a turn for the worse. Michael told Dave that Pat was devastated. Dave told Mac that Rachel wasn't out of the woods yet.

MARCH 17, 1976 (EP. #2956)
Alice and Emma helped Sally and Sharlene get ready to leave for school/work. Beatrice told Ray, Rocky, and Brooks that Rachel was improving. Pam questioned Sharlene about the meeting Carol had left for, then Russ came over. Angie left when Beatrice took over babysitting Nancy, then Clarice came and was engrossed in holding Nancy. Alice suggested Molly enroll in school in Bay City, and Emma worried she wants all the good things in life without being willing to work for them. Angie defended Willis when Pam told her he had accepted a deal behind Vic's back. Vic demanded Willis explain his involvement in the new project, but Willis stormed out after Alice phoned to relate she'd heard about the new project from Sharlene. Sharlene stood up to Willis's threats to reveal her secrets for carrying stories back to Alice.

Brooks (Joseph Maher, Introduction Line, when Beatrice offers him more coffee): "No, I'm fine, thank you, Beatrice."

MARCH 18, 1976 (EP. #2957)
Linda let Ada and Gil in to see Mac and Rachel, but barred entry to Iris. Beatrice was distressed when she and Jim found Sally letting herself into an empty house. Mac thought Iris selfish to demand attention at a time like this. Liz thought Helen naive for not believing Barbara schemed to get John for herself. Rachel was happy to awaken and be greeted by Mac and Ada. Mac thanked Robert for bringing Dennis to see him. Liz brought Helen to see Alice and was perturbed to find Jim and Beatrice having cake with Emma. Dennis was upset to overhear Robert bristle at Iris's attempts to control his schedule. Ada and Mac told Jamie about the baby's death.

MARCH 19, 1976 (EP. #2958)
Pat assured Marianne she wants John to remain close to his children. John was evasive when Barbara couldn't understand Pat's friendly attitude. Emma and Sharlene wondered why Willis was so jittery. Pat told Dave she understands now that she and John both needed things the other couldn't give. Vic agreed to let John have Barbara sit in on the meeting tomorrow. John told Barbara he'll divorce Pat so they can marry. Sharlene advised Carol not to put up with Willis's romantic inattention. Molly and Marianne got acquainted. Barbara was shocked when Dave coldly informed her Pat learned of her affair with John only the other night.

Pat: "I'm sort of numb now, but I feel something stirring in me that I've never felt before. [...] I want a richness I've never had."

MARCH 22, 1976 (EP. #2959)
Dave believed that John was deceiving Barbara. Iris assured an upset Dennis that all married couples quarrel. Tracy wondered how Iris managed to keep her secrets straight in her head. Louise refused Tracy's suggestion she leave Iris for Rocky. Pat assured Michael and Glenda that Marianne doesn't know about John's affair. Barbara realized John lied to her when Pat revealed he'd never spoken to her about his relationship with Barbara. Robert told Tracy he finds Iris exciting because she isn't always easy to explain. Dave informed Russ that Pat needs her family now. Russ came to visit Rachel, then Iris accused her of disturbing Mac by confusing delirium with memory. Rachel agreed she'd probably imagined phoning Iris again.

MARCH 23, 1976 (EP. #2960)
An indignant Robert refused to promise Iris he won't look up Lenore while he's in Washington. Robert and Tracy were concerned Dennis seemed unfriendly. Emma disagreed with Willis and felt it did Alice good to come into the office. Jim assured Liz he'd explained his relationship with Beatrice to Helen. Tracy refused to continue playing Iris's game in which they pretended Mac has an interest in her. Rachel disagreed but Mac agreed when Ken suggested she continue sculpting as a way to forget her loss. John canceled the meeting when Vic and Pam told him Willis likely wouldn't attend. Emma disbelieved Liz's claims that she became involved in Jim's life to protect Helen. Willis brought Jamie and Dennis to visit Rachel.

Memo (March 16, 1976): "Daytime TV -- Pat Kearney and Allen Rosenberg -- will continue their actors' roundtables on Wednesday, March 17 as follows: 2:00 PM - Dressing Room 204: Victoria Wyndham, Douglass Watson, Beverlee McKinsey, Nicolas Coster. After Act V Dress Rehearsal - Dressing Room 201: Tresa Hughes, Karin Wolfe, Will Lyman. The roundtables are discussions led by Ms. Kearney of approximately fifteen minutes duration, which are photographed by Mr. Rosenberg."

MARCH 24, 1976 (EP. #2961)
Pat wondered how someone self-righteously honest like John could lie, but Dave felt he was trapped in a situation he couldn't handle. Sally promised to introduce Molly to some kids on the school bus. Sharlene refused to discuss Willis's new project with Alice. Helen invited Liz to accompany her on her tour of the Greek Islands before her loved ones are forced to abandon her to protect themselves from her demanding behavior. Carol scoffed at Sharlene's belief that Willis was nice to kids because other people are grateful for the attention he gives them. Barbara told Dave she loves but doesn't trust John. Molly met Ken, who told Glenda, Marianne, and Daryll about an art showing. John disagreed when Carol suggested to Alice she give Willis authority over local projects. Liz and Russ disagreed about whether Jim can be happy with Beatrice. Barbara left John, who tried to explained he'd lied because he'd feared losing her.

MARCH 25, 1976 (EP. #2962)
Dennis was reluctant to talk to Mac about the problems at home. Robert chastised Iris for ridiculing Louise's friendship with Rocky. Gil was amused when Ken requested Ada pose for his class. Reluctant to leave Angie, Neil told Robert, Vic, and Pam he wouldn't be taking the trip to Washington. Tracy told Mac she'll be headed home since he isn't interested in her, then Iris accused her of flirting with Robert. Russ tried to defuse Michael's anger toward John. Brooks and Beatrice helped Ada and Gil clear out the nursery, then Neil suggested they give some of the baby things to Clarice. Glenda was distressed that Michael found it hard to have faith in people. Tracy said goodbye to Mac, but decided not to tell him the real reason Iris brought her to Bay City.

MARCH 26, 1976 (EP. #2963)
Iris didn't share Robert's concern that Dennis feels shut out of her life now that they've married. John advised Jim not to intrude on Barbara at this time. Vic and Pam were pleased when Carol came over and made a full disclosure about the new project, but Carol later called Willis to encourage him that if things continue to go smoothly Alice may give him more authority. Pat told Russ she wants Barbara to know she doesn't blame her. John unburdened himself to Robert about losing the only woman he loved because he couldn't hurt Pat by telling her the truth. Scott was disappointed that Tracy felt she wasn't good enough for him, then she blurted out that Iris was responsible for Rachel losing her baby. Ken, Daryll, and Glenda helped Marianne decorate for her party. Despite Russ and Pat's entreaties, Barbara refused to forgive herself for victimizing Pat. Though she feared Iris's vicious ways, Tracy told Scott why Iris married Robert and how she was responsible for Rachel's miscarriage. Barbara packed her bags and kicked John out of her life.

Scott: "Mac would never forgive her if he knew that."
Tracy (Caroline McWilliams, Exit Line): "Then you let him know if Iris ever tries to cause trouble between him and Rachel again."

John: "You really despise me, don't you?"
Barbara: "No, I think you despise yourself enough for both of us... Goodbye, John. [SHE HOLDS THE DOOR OPEN FOR HIM.]"
John: "I can't go on without you."
Barbara (Kathryn Walker, Exit Line): "You have to, John, just as I have to go on without you. Don't make it any more difficult than it already is."

Notes: Carol took over Willis's lines as well as her own in Act II because, as it said next to Willis's crossed-out name in the cast list, "baby on the way."

MARCH 29, 1976 (EP. #2964)
Mac urged Jamie and Dennis to attend the party despite Rachel's return home. Dave told Rachel that Linda will be moving into the mansion to nurse her. Pat and Dave informed Michael that Barbara left town. When Clarice revealed she was pregnant, Mac intuited Iris married Robert so quickly because she knew he was the father. Marianne was disappointed when Pat and Jim told her Barbara left town. Clarice wasn't interested in fighting Iris when Scott told her she'd known about the pregnancy all along. Glenda, Michael, Molly, Jamie, and Dennis arrived at Marianne's party. Dennis chatted with Molly, but Jamie was too embarrassed to dance with Marianne. Ray helped Beatrice get the house ready, then Mac carried Rachel in.

MARCH 30, 1976: Pre-empted for coverage of the U.S. National Football League Draft.

MARCH 31, 1976 (EP. #2965)
Iris informed Louise that Rocky wasn't a suitable companion for Dennis. Alice was bothered that Sharlene was no longer open with her. Russ was puzzled that Sharlene wasn't keen on discussing wedding plans. Iris assured Robert that Dennis didn't resent him, then was alarmed that Scott wanted to discuss something personal with him. Dennis convinced Molly to dance. Jamie questioned Glenda about Daryll's interest in Marianne. Ken showed up with wine, but a glum Michael left. Iris prevented Alice and Ray from joining her and Robert's table for drinks. Emma went to get them cake when Jamie and Dennis brought Molly home. Sharlene told Russ she was scared of marriage. Emma retreated upstairs when Ray brought Alice home. Iris prevented Robert from getting in touch with Scott.

APRIL 1, 1976 (EP. #2966)
Scott assured Iris he's changed his mind about needing to talk to Robert. Beatrice took the sculpture equipment away after Mac failed to bring Rachel out of her depression. Alice was pleased to find Vic and Willis working together so agreeably. Clarice wouldn't let Rachel convince her to level with Robert. Rachel told Iris no one intends to tell Mac the real reason she married Robert. Sharlene stopped Alice from sharing with Carol the news of her engagement. Scott was evasive when Mac wanted to figure out a way to convince Clarice to level with Robert. To get in his good graces, Willis reminded Mac he'd taken care of Jamie. Sharlene let Carol in on her engagement. Rachel told Scott she and Iris have reached an acceptable stalemate.

APRIL 2, 1976 (EP. #2967)
Alice offered to help Pat find work. Jim encouraged a hopeful John to patch things up with Pat. Carol warned Willis he'll alienate Alice if he doesn't lighten up on Sharlene. Sally pestered Alice, Emma, and Sharlene about the occasion for the party. Dave agreed to be Russ's best man. Willis warned Sharlene he has info for Russ that will take the icing off her announcement. Marianne promised John she'd help smooth things over with Pat. Russ was crushed when a note revealed Sharlene's run away again. Emma warned Willis to stop bedeviling Sharlene. John stood numbly in the shadows as Dave kissed Pat, who regretted letting John persuade her to marry him and wasting years of her life.

APRIL 5, 1976 (EP. #2968)
Beatrice told Rachel that Sharlene's disappeared. Ada disapproved when Russ asked Gil to trace Sharlene. Scott was glad that Mac felt Tracy was trustworthy. Mac and Ken conspired to renew Rachel's interest in her art. Willis advised Pam and Carol not to count on Sharlene's return. Willis offered no explanations to an angry Russ. Neil informed Pam he refuses to cover for Robert any longer. Angie disbelieved Emma's claims that Sharlene tried to keep Willis from using Alice to gain his own ends. Beatrice fed Rocky and Brooks soup. Ken was angry at Rachel for throwing away her talent. Angie confessed to Neil she's afraid of what Willis might do to people. Mac wondered to Rachel about why the phone was off the hook when he'd found her unconscious.

APRIL 6, 1976 (EP. #2969)
Scott suggested Rachel try to distinguish between reality and delirium. Pat informed Jim she no longer wants John back in her life, and he and Beatrice were surprised when Dave showed up with flowers for Pat. Dennis bristled when Jamie made cracks to Rocky about his feelings for Molly. Dennis whined to Louise that Iris no longer cares about him. Marianne filled Daryll, Glenda, and Michael in on John's attempts to reunite with Pat. Mac wondered to Rachel and Scott if Iris married Robert so quickly because she knew Clarice was pregnant. Jim brought Beatrice home and they told Louise and Rocky about their evening. Marianne introduced Daryll to Dave, then fled when Pat was more concerned about Dave than John. Rachel dissuaded Mac from becoming involved in Clarice's problems.

APRIL 7, 1976 (EP. #2970)
Sally pressured Alice to bring Willis home more often. Emma urged Russ not to drag the police into Sharlene's disappearance. Willis was more interested in talking about business with Angie than about Sharlene. Pam enthused about Neil's sketches more than Angie did. Liz insisted to Alice that Jim's friendship with Beatrice hurt Helen, not herself. Dennis introduced Molly to Iris and Robert. Willis vowed to show up Steve, but Emma threatened to let Alice in on his plans to destroy Sharlene to do it. Iris was furious after Robert had Neil phone her to cancel dinner plans. Neil was hurt when Angie declined to have dinner with Vic and Pam. Willis proudly showed Alice his high-rise plans. Dennis ran out angrily after Iris criticized Molly, and Robert vowed not to let her make him miserable.

Emma (To Willis): "Just don't put me to the test, or you'll be hitching a ride out of Bay City the way you did into it."

APRIL 8, 1976 (EP. #2971)
Mac and Linda wondered how to help a despondent Rachel. Ada and Gil quizzed Ray about Sharlene and Clarice. Mac asked Ada to get Ken to convince Rachel to resume sculpting. Liz insisted to Helen she needed to protect Jim. Pat didn't believe Marianne's claim that John wants to reconcile, or that Dave helped her through her abortion just to get closer to Pat. Dave advised Mac not to pamper Rachel and to find Pat a job at Cory. Brooks made himself scarce so Beatrice could question Ray about his visits with Sally. Helen advised Beatrice not to let anything stand in the way of her friendship with Jim. Ken agreed to Ada's request he make up with Rachel as long as Ada and Mac support him in getting Rachel to resume her lessons. Mac offered Pat Clarice's old receptionist job. Dave told Pat to trust her children to accept her doing what she feels is right.

Helen (Exit Line): "Now, I've got to see some other people, so I won't take up any more of your time. Goodbye, Beatrice."
Beatrice: "Goodbye, Helen. Bon voyage. [SHE STARES AFTER HELEN AS SHE LEAVES, AND THEN TURNS BACK TO THE STOVE, SMILING THOUGHTFULLY TO HERSELF. FADE OUT.]"

APRIL 9, 1976 (EP. #2972)
When Carol began regretting urging Willis to play up to Alice, he assured her he won't have to ignore her in favor of Alice much longer. Clarice was relieved when Iris phoned and insisted Scott come over to her house to discuss amendments to her will. Vic didn't object when Alice gave Willis autonomy to give him more confidence. Jim confided to Alice he worried Pat was bottling up her feelings and may do something impulsive. Angie resented Neil for wanting them to honeymoon in Chadwell since he'll need to be there a month working on the library. Scott informed Iris that Tracy didn't tell him anything he didn't believe. Willis wouldn't let Carol kiss him in front of Alice. Angie overheard when Pam brought evidence to Vic that suggested Willis was trying to shut him out of the new project. Jim told Liz he doesn't intend to put up with her behavior now that Helen isn't here as her excuse. Iris claimed it was Rachel who told her about the pregnancy, and tried to bribe Clarice, then convince her to have an abortion.

APRIL 12, 1976 (EP. #2973/2974)
Clarice dissolved into tears when Iris fed her lies about Mac's opinion of her. Iris gave Clarice an envelope with cash since they had a bad experience last year with checks. Ken offered to teach Rachel for free to prove he isn't motivated by her husband's money. Clarice packed her bags and told Scott she doesn't know whom to trust anymore. Mac urged Iris not to neglect Dennis. Clarice felt better when Scott got Rachel to tell her Iris had been lying about everything, and Rachel felt they now have a weapon to keep Iris from harassing Clarice. Alice offered to let Ray's sons stay at her house over the summer. Angie was skeptical when Alice insisted it wasn't Willis's idea for him to share executive authority with Vic. Iris offered to do it as a gift (suggesting converting the solarium) when Rachel rejected Mac's offer to build her a studio.

APRIL 13, 1976 (EP. #2975/2976)
Carol convinced Willis to keep the expansion a secret or Vic will take the project away from him. Emma gave Russ Sharlene's letter from San Francisco. Willis assured Emma that Sharlene was safe as long as she stayed out of his way, then assured Angie he'd just misplaced the letter he was supposed to send to Jamieson asking him to send a copy of their correspondence to Vic. Mac and Rachel welcomed Pat to work at Cory. Willis made an elaborate phone call for Pam's benefit, then went over final details of the library with Alice and Jim. Russ told Pat he was leaving for San Francisco. Iris took back the money, but threatened to prove Clarice was an unfit mother. Scott resigned as Iris's attorney when he found her badgering Clarice. Willis tried to convince Jim that Pam was the ideal replacement for Barbara. Scott told Rachel they need to use her second phone call to Iris to keep Iris from harassing Clarice.

Mac: "Hello, Pat, and welcome to our ship. [...] I like my company to be a family of friends."

Notes: This episode and the previous inexplicably combined two episode numbers. The 2973/2974 was clearly a hodgepodge of scenes from two scripts, 2973 and 2974. This episode had the "2975/2976" designation on every script page. Both episodes were a normal length of seven acts. The next episode, labeled as "2977," returns to the normal numbering practice, and there are no missing days. There is no obvious reason for the double episode numbers of this and the previous episode. If I were to conjecture, I would suggest that, for whatever reasons, storylines had to advance more rapidly than scheduled, so elements of four scripts were combined into two, with the double episode numbers used to reflect the doubling up. This means that there were actually 8,889 episodes of Another World, not 8,891.

APRIL 14, 1976 (EP. #2977)
Molly told Emma she was in awe of the way Beatrice waited on Rachel. Emma told Alice that Sharlene doesn't feel worthy of Russ. Willis gloated to Carol when Jim said John was willing to hire Pam to supervise routine office work. Russ phoned Emma in despair after the hotel clerk didn't recognize Sharlene's description. A groping truck driver recognized Sharlene, but she shoved him out of the way. Beatrice fussed to Jim about Rachel's unhappiness. Willis informed Neil and Angie that she'll be working more closely with him now that Pam's seeking a job with John. Willis showed up for dinner at Alice's and accused Emma of turning against him though he's trusted her since Ma died, but she warned she'd tell Alice about how she'd once borrowed money from Steve to keep him out of prison. Louise, Rocky, and Dennis talked Molly out of riding horses over to see the marvelous Iris. Willis confided to Alice that Burt and the boys needed Emma at home. Russ told Sharlene they'll return to Bay City as husband and wife.

APRIL 15, 1976 (EP. #2978)
After Dennis left for school early, Louise explained to Iris he feels in the way sometimes. Robert reminded Iris he'd like to start a family. Rachel told Mac she regrets the studio project will keep her in constant contact with Iris. Robert defended to Neil Iris's motives for building the studio. Iris ordered Scott to send her legal papers to John. Rachel confided to Dave that Scott has proof that Iris ignored her second phone call. Ken asked Ada and Gil to help him deal with Iris's strange ideas for the studio. Robert assured Mac and Scott that Iris will get over her insecurities about Clarice. Gil offered to be kibitzer for Jamie and Dennis's chess game. Iris tenderly touched Rachel's bust of Mac, then Rachel sent Ada out of the room to confront Iris about deliberately ignoring her phone call.

APRIL 16, 1976 (EP. #2979)
Rachel ordered Iris never to see Mac again or she'll make sure Mac and Robert know the truth. Ada applauded when Rocky impertinently refused to obey Iris's orders to fetch Dennis. Rocky was repentant when Beatrice and Gil told him Iris might take her anger out on Louise. Ray gifted Sally with Chinese checkers. Sharlene and Russ phoned to tell Alice they've just gotten married. Mac was pleased to return home and find Ada, Gil, and Robert keeping Rachel company. Russ turned down Sharlene's surprising suggestion they move to San Francisco. Iris threw him out when Rocky came to warn Louise about Iris's mood. Robert told Iris he agrees with Rachel's orders and urged her to loosen the ties that bind her to Mac so they can be happy together. Beatrice warned Ray that Olive is trying to get in touch with him. Mac insisted to Rachel that Iris wants to make up for her past behavior.

Iris: "You're blackmailing me!"
Rachel: "Yes, Iris. I'd almost forgotten about blackmail, but you've made me remember it all."

APRIL 19, 1976 (EP. #2980)
John and Jim complimented Pam on her efficiency. John was crestfallen when Pat phoned to ask him to remove his personal effects from the house. Jim offered to cover the phones so Vic could take Pam to lunch. Angie agreed to believe Willis only had Pam's best intentions at heart. Jim disagreed with Liz's belief that Pat may regret her new-found independence. Clarice wouldn't tell Pat why she needed to see Dave. Marianne told John not to be so tolerant of Pat's friendship with Dave. Dave advised Clarice not to worry about Iris's threats to take her baby away. Carol warned Willis not to be sentimental about Angie since she might prove to be a worse obstacle than Pam. Carol cleared away the new sketches (marked with an inverted "V" so they know which ones not to show Vic) when Vic and Pam came to talk to Willis about a replacement for Pam. Marianne was aghast when Pat left for dinner with Dave after refusing to talk to John. John admitted it when Michael told Marianne about his affair with Barbara.

APRIL 20, 1976 (EP. #2981)
Molly was pleased when Dennis phoned to say he can attend the party for the newlyweds. Alice and Emma let Molly know that Willis and Sharlene haven't been getting on well. Vic and Robert kidded them when Neil and Angie announced they'll be having their wedding soon. Russ assured Sharlene he didn't mind, so she phoned Carol to get her old job back. An upset Iris forbade Robert from asking Rachel what she has against Iris. When Brooks left with Jamie, Willis learned from Beatrice about Alice's party to celebrate Sharlene's marriage. Iris fumed when Neil phoned to ask Robert to take his studio sketches over to the Corys. Willis told Carol they were crashing Alice's party, then swore to Angie that he never cared a damn about Carol, and she gradually responded to his kiss. Jim and Alice welcomed Sharlene to the family, then Dennis congratulated Russ. Sharlene ran upstairs when Willis and Carol brushed past Emma at the door.

APRIL 21, 1976 (EP. #2982)
Robert showed Neil's sketches to Mac, Rachel, and Ken. Jim chatted with Willis; Liz complained at how Russ and Sharlene took off; Emma renewed her threat to Willis; Michael and Glenda told Pat not to worry about Marianne. Marianne sobbed against Daryll's chest and told him she's losing respect for everyone she's loved and looked up to all her life. Alice was delighted to hear Willis hopes Sharlene will be happy. Liz put Sally to bed after she kissed Alice, Jim, and Michael goodnight. Mac and Rachel convinced Ken to let her use his studio until hers is built. Carol advised Willis to get Emma out of Alice's house so she won't influence Alice against him. They decided to use Molly's restlessness to convince Alice that Molly and Emma need the privacy of an apartment. Neil was perplexed when Angie ran out after he tried to kiss her. Mac was incredulous when Rachel broke down and admitted Iris had refused to let her speak to him on the phone.

Carol: "Boy, you certainly do know how to play people off against each other-- "
Willis: "Look who's talking."

Crawl: Mac brooding.

APRIL 22, 1976 (EP. #2983)
Dennis admitted to Robert and Louise he feels in the way. Beatrice and Rocky let Jamie know that Mac wants Dennis out of the way when he visits Iris. Neil confided to Robert that he's reached a crisis with Angie. Gil and Ada wondered why Angie looks so unhappy. Pam admitted to John she worries that Willis is a threat to Vic. Daryll let John know Marianne was in a bad way. Scott confirmed Mac's suspicion that Tracy was his source. Vic was delighted when Pam dropped by. When John apologized for not being able to control his feelings, Marianne forgave him. Ada and Gil gave Clarice more baby clothes. Rocky showed Beatrice and the boys the plant Louise gave him. Mac stormed into Iris's and ordered Louise to leave and close the doors behind her.

APRIL 23, 1976 (EP. #2984)
Iris denied it when Mac accused her of not having put through the second call. Iris insisted Scott and Tracy were maligning her, but then admitted it when Mac vowed to cut her out of his life. Carol thought it stupid and dangerous that Willis was diverting Vic's mail from Jamieson. Neil and Vic questioned Carol and Willis about Angie's disappearance, then Neil took a swing at Willis for saying he was pressing a fast wedding on someone who's not that interested. When Iris said Rachel has been spreading dreadful lies about her, Liz suggested using Rocky and Louise to keep her informed about Mac and Rachel. Beatrice cautioned Dennis against defying Iris. Carol was perplexed when Willis asked Vic to convince Alice to find Emma and Molly a new place to live so she'll have more time for office matters. Iris apologized to Louise and Rocky and encouraged their friendship.

Mac: "I never want to see you again, do you understand?"
Iris: "You don't mean that."
Mac: "If you come to our house, you'll be turned away."
Iris: "[CRYING] Daddy!"
Mac: "Goodbye, Iris. [HE STARTS OUT.]"
Iris: "[DESPERATELY] Why didn't Rachel tell me she was ill?"
Mac: "[STOPPING AT THE DOORS] What did you say?"

...
Mac: "You're no longer my daughter."
Iris: "I can straighten this all out with Rachel, if you let me."
Mac: "No, you stay away from Rachel... stay away from both of us. [HE TURNS AND EXITS QUICKLY.]"
Iris: "[FOLLOWING HIM] Daddy! Come back... I can explain... [SHE STANDS IN THE FOYER DOORWAY, SHAKING HER HEAD] Oh, Daddy, don't punish me... please... [SHE BEGINS TO SOB] I didn't mean anything by it... [SHE MAKES HER WAY TO THE SOFA, SOBBING, AND SINKS DOWN ON IT, CURLING UP INTO AN INFANT'S POSITION] Daddy... I need you, Daddy... I don't have anyone else... [SHE SOBS BROKENLY, AS LOUISE HURRIES IN.]"
Louise: "Mrs. Delaney!"
Iris: "Go away!"
Louise: "Now, stop that. [SHE PUTS HER ARMS AROUND HER] Mr. Cory will come back--"
Iris: "He never wants to see me again."
Louise: "He's said that before, and he's always come around again."
Iris: "No, this time I've lost him forever... and I don't care about anything else-- [SHE ROCKS BACK AND FORTH, AS LOUISE TRIES TO RESTRAIN HER] There's no one else in the world who means anything to me... [FADE OUT]"

APRIL 26, 1976 (EP. #2985)
Sharlene happily waited on Russ and drop-in guest Dave. John accepted Jim's dinner invite. Pam and Vic worried about Angie. Angie admitted to Clarice she doesn't want to marry Neil at all, she wants to protect childlike and helpless Willis. Marianne thanked Daryll for reuniting her with John, then told Glenda she's angry at Michael for not being able to forgive John. Liz thought Clarice was too common for Pat to be befriending. Sharlene visited the complex to ask Pat to dinner. Vic told Angie that Willis had provoked Neil. Liz scolded Russ for encouraging Pat and Dave. As Daryll helped Jim with dinner, Marianne assured John she isn't getting serious with him. Russ and Sharlene showed Dave and Pat photos of their wedding at the justice of the peace's house.

APRIL 27, 1976 (EP. #2986)
When Neil confided Angie still has feelings for Willis, Robert recommended he move to Washington with Angie and work in a small Delaney branch office. Clarice informed Neil that she was taking care of Angie. Liz fretted about Pat when Iris related how Dave preyed upon her loneliness and confusion. Neil told Ada and Gil about his run-in with Willis. Daryll promised Marianne he won't hurt her the way Chris did. When Iris said Tracy was spreading lies about her, Robert suggested they forget about it and build a family of their own. John refused to listen to Liz's gossip about Dave. Ada told Neil it was hopeless to expect Angie to change her feelings. Dennis came over to Scott's table to tell Clarice he's teaching Molly to ride the way her friend Philip taught him. When Iris noticed Clarice's pregnancy was showing, she feigned dizziness to make Robert take her home.

APRIL 28, 1976 (EP. #2987)
Emma couldn't object when Alice had faith in Willis's abilities. Willis told Vic he regrets needling Neil. Sharlene apologized to Alice for running out on her party, then told Emma how happy she was. Pat was indifferent when John came over to the table to greet her and Alice. Willis gave Carol the bum's rush, then gave Angie a gold watch as a token of the firm's appreciation. Willis then nodded in satisfaction when Angie ran out in tears. Emma and Sharlene encouraged Molly to attend college. Emma told Angie she feels she's the one who can keep Willis from damaging his life. John begged Pat to intercede with Michael, then insisted he missed her. Vic told Alice that Willis was being fully cooperative about the new project. Flipping out at catching Sharlene peeking at the secret high-rise sketches, Willis warned she was more vulnerable as a wife than as a fiancé.

APRIL 29, 1976 (EP. #2988)
Over breakfast, Jamie and Dennis talked to Beatrice about Molly, to Brooks about their party, to Rocky about riding, and to Mac about Iris. Robert fumed when Iris accused him of creating pretexts to see Clarice. Iris told Louise to bring her Rachel's bust of Mac since they gave it to her as a present. Angie returned Neil's ring after admitting she loves Willis and is ashamed of pretending things she doesn't feel. Mac complained to Ken that Rachel was devoting too much time to her new piece at his studio. When Liz begged for help in getting rid of Alice's house guests, Willis suggested she recruit Sharlene's help. A dejected Neil told Ada and Gil he's been living in a fool's paradise and will make plans to leave town. Louise and Rocky packed Mac's bust in a carton. Ken assured Ada he won't let Rachel overdo it. Dennis was perplexed when Louise and Rocky delivered Mac's bust to Iris. Mac was delighted when Ada and Gil brought Nancy over. Angie threw herself into Willis's arms, then noticed Carol in the bedroom doorway wearing a negligee.

Mac: "I guess I'm not an expert on the nature of artists."
Ken: "You will be soon, Mac, so be prepared."

APRIL 30, 1976 (EP. #2989)
Angie fled in tears, then Willis insisted to Carol he needed Angie as a buffer against Vic. Dave warned Pat he has a wary view of domestic life. Seeing himself in Mike, Dave warned him not to let his parents' broken marriage influence his attitudes about married life. Marianne was displeased Daryll won an award for painting a redhead in her lit class. Sharlene looked away nervously when Pat warned her secrets can corrode even the best marriage. Clarice appreciated it when Neil offered her his apartment. Angie cried to Clarice that Willis tricked her into believing he loved her by playing upon her need to believe he's better than he is. Glenda and Daryll made Michael realize his attitude toward John hurts Marianne. Sharlene admitted to Pat that Russ won't let her tell him something important about her past. Marianne told John she'll keep him company if Pat won't. Neil grabbed Willis by the collar and shoved him against the wall, but Willis only laughed at him.

MAY 3, 1976 (EP. #2990)
Molly was mortified when Sally told Emma that she spends time with boys on the bus. Louise's ears perked up when Dennis told Iris he can't understand why Mac gave her his bust. Jamie and Mac rearranged their schedules with Beatrice and Rocky to accommodate Rachel. Emma smelled Willis's involvement when Liz accused her of taking advantage of Alice's generosity. Ray was worried about Willis when Mac and Scott told Alice and him they'd like to assign him as liaison for the library dedication. Iris overheard Rocky tell Louise that Iris made them accessories to a theft. Jim offered to drive Molly home when he came to take Beatrice to dinner. Jamie and Dennis lamented that both Marianne and Molly are attracted to Daryll. Mac was saddened when Scott told him Neil intends to move to Washington. After Beatrice and Jim took Sally for a walk, Ray told Alice that Olive broke off with the man she left him for and now wants Ray back.

Iris: "Well, Daddy, if I can't see you in person, I'll have to settle for this, but I'm not letting anyone take it from me. [SHE RUNS HER HANDS LIGHTLY OVER THE BUST, SMILING.]"

MAY 4, 1976 (EP. #2991)
An embarrassed Dennis picked Molly up. Alice was flattered that Ray had feelings for her but needed more time to get over Steve. After Emma confronted him, a baleful Willis told Carol they need to find some way to neutralize her. Angie told Ada and Gil she suspects Willis was trying to break up her and Neil. At Tallboys, Iris coached an impatient Dennis and an excited Molly on proper dinner etiquette. Confused by the French menu, Molly thought "poisson" was "poison." Dennis noticed Mac seemed embarrassed when he and Jamie ran into them. Willis told Carol he needed to do damage control with Alice. Emma confirmed for Angie that Willis and Carol were conspiring to take over the firm. Iris was despondent when Dennis railed at her for criticizing Molly and alienating Mac. Dennis showed up at Mac's saying he needed to cool off. Willis stared from the terrace as Ray lightly kissed Alice goodnight.

Carol: "And pretty soon you'll take over Frame Enterprises and then there'll be no stopping you--"
Emma: "[FROM THE SOFA, IN THE DARKNESS] Don't count on that, Willis."

MAY 5, 1976 (EP. #2992)
Neil told Clarice he might look up Lenore when he moves to Washington. Robert was pleased Neil will be taking over his branch office. Angie told Ada and Gil she'll hide her feelings to find out what Willis is cooking up. Willis was surprised when Alice voiced her desire to move ahead in her life. Neil and Scott tried to calm Clarice's fears about Iris's threats. Pat and Glenda urged Michael to make amends with John. Pam informed Vic about Angie's broken engagement. Michael realized it was a mistake to see him when John felt he and Pat could be happy again. Neil was furious when Ada informed him Willis manoeuvred Angie into breaking up with him. Alice accepted Ray's dinner invite. Clarice and Scott fled when Robert arrived to talk to Pat. Neil pummeled Willis until Vic dragged him away. Neil rushed from the room when Angie berated him, then she coddled Willis.

Neil (Exit Line, while pummeling Willis) "I should have done this months ago."

MAY 6, 1976 (EP. #2993)
Rachel let Ken show Marianne and Daryll her latest sketches. Glenda told Pat she worried about Michael's meeting with John. Mac refused to discuss Iris with Liz. Molly complained to Emma and Sharlene that Iris looked down on her dress. Russ asked them to supper as Emma forbade Molly from borrowing Sharlene's low-cut dress. Michael approved but Liz was aghast when Pat insisted her life is happier without John. Dave doctored Willis's battered face. Ada and Gil showed up to drag Rachel out of Ken's studio. Russ and Molly were confused when Sharlene said she'd fought with Willis only about her carrying stories back to Alice, then Willis showed up to tell Sharlene his old Navy buddies send their congratulations. Mac grudgingly agreed to abandon the Cory studio since Rachel prefers the privacy of Ken's, then they wondered what became of his bust.

Ken's pencilled-in line about John: "He looks like a lawyer."

MAY 7, 1976 (EP. #2994)
Rachel and Beatrice wondered what happened to the bust. Rocky accused Iris of stealing the bust, now bolted to the stand in her bedroom, but Louise wouldn't let him go get it. Marianne accused Michael of having double standards where their parents are concerned. Rocky informed Rachel that Iris stole the bust. Iris told Liz that Rachel was much more interested in Ken than in art. Rachel assured Ken that Mac understands perfectly her desire for the isolation of his studio. Robert couldn't get Rocky to tell him what was going on. Dennis held the ladder as Molly hung crepe streamers. Molly ignored Dennis to dance with Michael then Daryll. Robert stormed out after informing Iris she has yet to earn his loyalty. Rachel walked in after Iris refused to hand over the bust to Brooks.

MAY 10, 1976 (EP. #2995)
When Rachel threatened to bring Gil with a search warrant, Iris begged her for the bust of Mac, the only person she's ever been able to count on during a loveless, unsatisfied life. John told a sympathetic Mac about his troubles with Pat and Michael. Jim told Pat that Beatrice helps him resist the temptation to interfere in his children's lives. When Sally groused about not being invited to the party, Ray asked Alice if he could throw one for her. John and Pat felt awkward after running into each other at Mac and Rachel's. Iris informed Louise that Dennis is no longer allowed over at the Cory's. Willis let Alice know he resents Ray's taking such a prominent part in the library dedication. Beatrice informed Willis that Olive wants to reunite with Ray. Mac promised Rachel he'd retrieve the bust from Iris.

MAY 11, 1976 (EP. #2996)
Pat informed Liz she was no longer just a woman on some man's shadow. John was so depressed about being ignored by Pat he couldn't concentrate on what Pam was saying. Liz lectured Jim on his fatherly responsibilities to Pat. Marianne realized it was useless to talk to Pat, who felt John only needed a home and someone to take care of it. Angie helped Clarice unpack, and felt Willis loves her though he can't admit it to himself. Russ told Dave that Willis still worried Sharlene, then told Liz to wise up about Iris's vindictiveness about men who've caught on to her. Jim walked in on Vic kissing Pam. Daryll was confused by Marianne's jealousy over Molly and her refusal to get closer to him. Clarice asked Scott to help her get Angie through her bad time. Vic told Angie that the firm could be in trouble if Willis and Carol are starting work on the high rise without a formal go-ahead. Russ alerted Pat that Iris was maligning Dave to Liz. John begged Pat not to cut him out of her life, then barred her from the door when the bell rang.

MAY 12, 1976 (EP. #2997)
John left with his tail between his legs when Pat thought him pathetic to beg for something he'd said he never really wanted. After Dave told Pat he's fallen in love with her after a lifetime of never really loving anyone, she promised she wouldn't hurt or leave him. Mac asked permission to persuade Iris to level with Robert about everything, but Clarice wouldn't take the chance that Iris would find some way to take her baby away. Jamie wouldn't reveal to Ada and Gil the identity of the older woman he was mooning over. Iris ordered Dennis to cancel the date he just made with Molly, but Robert got her to change her mind. Molly chafed at her dull life. Daryll charmed Emma into letting him take Molly out. Dennis hurried out after coming over to pick Molly up and finding her on her way out with Daryll. Mac thought it disturbed for Iris to want a memento of him. Iris claimed she was what she was because he never paid her attention when she sobbed her heart out at some dismal girl's school and when young men flattered her because they wanted to marry her fortune. Iris felt Robert loved her only for the child he wants to have. Iris cried that the bust smiles at her and helps her remember the father she adored. Ada and Gil wondered why Jamie, Dennis, and Mac were all so agitated. Dave suggested Pat move if her house has too many memories.

MAY 13, 1976 (EP. #2998)
Rachel agreed Iris can keep the bust so Mac won't have to endure another ugly scene. Rachel and Robert arranged to meet to discuss the studio. Louise told Rocky she won't add herself to the people defying Iris. After Carol said Willis has mellowed, Sharlene informed him that Russ now knows everything about her. Ken advised Rachel to draw her family into her work instead of shutting them out of it the way he did with his sundry siblings. Rachel was too busy to come join Mac's meeting about the library with Ray, Alice, and Robert. Louise was uncomfortable when Rocky and Ada criticized Iris. Vic worried when Willis said he's begun preliminary work without having yet submitted a bid to Jamieson. As Ray showed Willis his plans for the ceremony, Sharlene drew Alice aside to warn her to keep a close eye on the high rise while Vic's away. Ada and Gil let Rachel know that something was bothering Jamie. Rachel phoned Clarice to bring the studio photographs over, lying that Robert wasn't at the house.

MAY 14, 1976 (EP. #2999)
Robert was curious why Rachel was so interested in bringing him and Clarice together. Dennis sulked to Louise about being neglected by Iris, who made insinuations about Rachel and Ken. Clarice told Pat she was leaving early. Pat told Michael she has plans to share with him and Marianne. When Pat considered forgetting the things Rachel did in the past, Mac asked her over to dinner with Dave. Clarice fled upon encountering Robert at Rachel's, but not before he noticed she was pregnant. Robert thanked Rachel for having the decency to tell him Iris knew all along. Iris made insinuations when she found Ken and Marianne alone in his studio. Mac approved that Rachel brought Robert and Clarice together. Michael and Marianne reacted differently to Pat's plans to move to an apartment. Louise took Dennis away so Robert could confront Iris.

MAY 17, 1976 (EP. #3000)
Iris felt Robert naive to assume he was the father, then claimed Angie broke her engagement because she learned Neil was the father. Gil and Angie promised Clarice they'd protect her from Iris. Russ assured Sharlene his feelings for her won't change, even though he won't let her tell him the secret from her past. Emma told Alice that unlike Steve, Willis doesn't have the steadying love of a good woman, then suggested Ray would be a valuable addition to the firm. Iris threw Gil out. Emma told Sharlene not to worry as she has a plan to take care of Willis. Molly convinced Daryll they can see each other without Marianne or Emma's knowledge. Sharlene told Russ she feels better after having spoken to Emma. Clarice refused to risk its future by confirming to Robert the baby was his.

Announcer: "And now, for the next sixty minutes, the winner of the 1976 Emmy award for outstanding achievement in daytime drama -- Another World." [Used for the entire week.]

MAY 18, 1976 (EP. #3001)
Ray told Ada and Gil he's refusing to let Olive come to Bay City. Willis told Carol he'll stall Vic about the bid figures until Alice is safely in Chadwell. Emma made plans to be elsewhere when Willis phoned Alice about coming over. Ada confided to Angie that she too once trusted the wrong guy. Willis and Carol realized they need to force Vic out of the firm so Willis can convince Alice he needs complete authority to swing the high-rise deal. Willis informed Vic they have split, not shared, authority. Marianne told John and Pam she was changing her major to art, then offered to help with the office work. Emma asked Angie to keep an eye on Willis so they'll be able to alert Alice. Vic disagreed when Pam felt they should let Willis hang himself by overreaching the firm. Ray threw up road blocks in Willis's attempts to convince Alice to spend a week in Chadwell.

MAY 19, 1976 (EP. #3002)
Iris told Louise she'll save Robert by spreading the truth about Neil and Clarice. Iris panicked when Robert intended to contact Neil in Chadwell for the truth. Mac advised Pat not to let her children affect her decisions. Russ shared his worries over Sharlene with Dave, who arranged to meet Michael. A glum Sharlene told Carol it would be better if she stopped working for her. Carol eavesdropped as Emma told Sharlene that Angie promised to keep her posted if Willis tries any funny business. Mac promised to protect Clarice from Iris. Iris accused Mac of losing all standards of decorum and breeding ever since he married Rachel, but he felt liberated from the false values that have made her the destructive creature she is. Iris claimed everyone laughs at the common little parvenu he married and vowed he'll never see Dennis again. Dave advised Michael not to be so judgmental of a father's mistakes. Dave pressured Pat into going apartment hunting. Robert told Mac he doesn't even know what to believe since no one will confirm he's the father.

MAY 20, 1976 (EP. #3003)
Mac leveled with Robert about Clarice's pregnancy and Iris's knowledge of it. Liz and Marianne agreed Dave was a bad influence on Pat. Marianne had no time to spare for Daryll. Iris informed Clarice she'd tolerate her baby if Robert won custody of it. Pat accused Liz of encouraging Marianne to hope for things that will never happen. Dennis was peeved when Daryll came over just as he and Jamie were about to go riding with Molly, but Rocky refused to let Daryll ride Mac's horse. Molly left a note for Dennis after agreeing to go for a drive with Daryll. Robert got Louise to confirm a suspicion. Clarice fretted that not even Mac can protect her from Iris. Dave said he'll very patiently wait for Pat to resolve her issues. Robert hounded Iris until she admitted she knew about the pregnancy before they'd married, but insisted she never believed he was really the father.

MAY 21, 1976 (EP. #3004)
Beatrice confided Ray and Olive's troubles to Rachel. To protect Marianne, Emma promised Alice she'd put a stop to Molly seeing Daryll. Vic and John informed Alice that Willis is openly defying his written agreement to keep Vic fully informed. Alice refused to allow them to have Angie spy on Willis, but wouldn't talk to Willis herself since she didn't want him interpreting criticism as a lack of faith. Sharlene admitted to Carol it was Emma who convinced her to come back to work, but insisted Emma wasn't turning against Willis. Ada brought Nancy to the studio to distract Rachel from her art and from Ken. Willis refused to listen to what Carol overheard Emma tell Sharlene about Angie. Willis talked his way out of letting John, Alice, and Emma convince him to accompany Alice to Chadwell. Ada had Mac phone Rachel to say he was sending Brooks over to pick her up, but Rachel had left for a walk with Ken.

Sharlene: "Yeah, Emma brought me up after Ma died... She's been like a second mother to the younger ones... me and Willis, particularly--"

MAY 24, 1976 (EP. #3005)
Robert told Iris he still doesn't understand what Clarice is afraid of. Ada soothed an impatient Mac. Both Iris and Clarice were sympathetic when Robert revealed he'd once had a child that died in a car crash. In exasperation, Clarice shouted that Robert wasn't the father. Willis finally convinced Alice to go to Chadwell by explaining he couldn't trust Neil after he'd attacked him. Mac convinced Rachel it was important she come home for the impromptu barbecue, but she asked Ken to come along with her. Willis suggested Molly move in with Sharlene once Emma returns home. Ada disapproved when Beatrice gave out Alice's phone number when Olive implied there was trouble with Curtis. Olive demanded Ray tell her the identity of the woman who'd answered the phone. Beatrice was miffed when Sally and Jim said Alice would be in Chadwell for a week. Rachel arrived home with Ken. Iris promised a disappointed Robert they'll have their own baby.

Beatrice: "[THE PHONE RINGS] Excuse me. [SHE PICKS IT UP] Cory residence."
Olive (Introduction Line): "[TWO WAY, LIMBO] Beatrice?"
Beatrice: "Yes? Who's this, please?"
Olive: "Don't tell me you don't recognize my voice anymore."
Beatrice: "Olive?"
Olive: "That's right."

MAY 25, 1976 (EP. #3006)
Sally and Molly came home and told Emma, Sharlene, and Russ about the barbecue. Sharlene suggested she ask Alice if she can stay on after graduation after rejecting Molly's request to move in with her and Russ. After Vic stole Pam away for dinner, John told Marianne he only thought he loved Barbara because he was reacting to being hurt. Alice explained to Ray that Willis's mask of brashness hides a childhood of hurt and humiliation, then Dave and Pat revealed she's found an apartment near the complex. Molly introduced Daryll to Sharlene, who convinced Emma to let them go out so she could reveal Willis's attempts to isolate Alice. Pat was upset when Marianne, with John, snubbed her when they came into Tallboys. Pam turned down Vic's marriage proposal after listening to how tenderly he spoke to Lenore over the phone. Daryll gave Molly some sketches he did of her, and she responded eagerly to his kiss. Ray told Alice he'd take care of Olive.

MAY 26, 1976 (EP. #3007)
Iris denied to Robert she had any interest in taking Clarice's baby. Robert warned Iris may lose Louise when she was rude to Rocky. Iris distrusted Robert's reasons for needing to spend so much time in Washington. Louise was upset at Rocky's dreadful accusations against Iris, but then she accused Iris of never hesitating to take advantage of her to do something disagreeable. Liz and Marianne failed to recruit Alice into helping them discourage Pat away from Dave. Ray had no time to talk to Robert about the library. Scott gave Robert the phone message slip to prove Iris has been harassing Clarice. Beatrice apologized for letting Olive trick her into revealing Alice's number, then cried when Ray didn't like her disapproval of Alice being away from Sally for a week. Olive phoned again and learned Alice's name, then gave Ray some wifely advice about spending so much time at another woman's house. Jim and Beatrice's arrival at Tallboys prevented Liz from filling Marianne in on Dave's undue influence. Iris gloated to Louise about the bust now being in the same room as her portrait, then Robert confronted her about the message slip.

MAY 27, 1976 (EP. #3008)
Robert vowed to find out the truth after accusing Iris of lying about everything she does. Ada warned Rachel of the impressions she was giving Mac about her and Ken. Beatrice told Jim that Ray needs to compromise or a vindictive Olive will never let him see his sons again. Beatrice was mortified when Liz accused Jim of ignoring Marianne to pursue his own pleasures. Rachel was furious when Iris said Clarice conspired with Neil to turn Robert into the perfect patsy. Ada threw Iris out when she vowed to do whatever it takes to keep Robert, even bringing Neil back to Bay City and putting him on the witness stand. Scott told Mac he hasn't been effective in warning Iris off Clarice. Mac informed Robert that Pendleton seems to think he's no longer willing to work in Washington, then advised him to seek the truth about Clarice from Ada. Beatrice moaned to Rachel about Liz's barbs. Ada felt they needed to protect Neil and Angie since Iris threatened to drag them into court, but Clarice felt the only solution was to go into hiding.

MAY 28, 1976 (EP. #3009)
When Ada left them alone, Clarice admitted to Robert he was the father, to protect Neil. Robert was dubious when Ada insisted Iris will go to any lengths to make sure Clarice never has any claim on him. Willis and Carol celebrated when Jamieson accepted their bid, then she warned him to be on guard against Ray's making himself indispensable to Alice. Angie regretted that Vic's long stay in Washington will prevent him from keeping an eye on Willis. Mac assured Vic that Robert has no intentions of backing out of the Pendleton project. Robert learned from Mac and Rachel that Iris doesn't want Mac to love anyone but her just as she can never really love anyone but him. Mac couldn't abandon Iris for fear she would turn her destructive energy on herself. Willis gloated to Carol after Angie revealed Vic was worried Robert was backing out. Ada, Gil, and Angie provided moral support to Clarice. Robert downed two shots, smashed Mac's bust, then approached the portrait with a poker.

MAY 31, 1976 (EP. #3010)
Robert destroyed Mac's bust and Iris's portrait. Iris found Louise with the poker in her and and accused her of destroying her portrait out of revenge. Iris wailed over the smashed bust, sure Rachel was responsible. Ada listened with growing bewilderment as Louise then Iris phoned Gil about Rachel's hired vandals. Molly assured Sally that Alice would be too bored to remain in Chadwell long. Ray was glad to hear Emma was trying to push Alice into building a new life for herself. Michael explained to Glenda he and Marianne disagree about too many things, then they urged Daryll not to give up on her. Gil questioned Iris and Louise, then dusted the poker for prints. Sally was thrilled when the college crowd dropped by to ask Molly along for a drive, but Emma warned her not to come home late. On Ada's advice, Ray phoned and learned from her sister Doris that Olive's disappeared with the boys. Iris threatened to tell the Police Commissioner of Gil's rudeness to her.

Robert: "She never loved anyone but him. [AS HE DOES SO, HE NOTICES THE BUST OF CORY IN THE CORNER. HE GOES TO IT AND STARES AT IT UNTIL HE SUDDENLY HURLS IT TO THE FLOOR WHERE IT SHATTERS INTO PIECES. HE STARES AT THEM FOR A MOMENT, THEN BENDS DOWN, AND STARTS TO PICK UP THE PIECES.] I didn't mean to do that... [... HE PULLS A CHAIR TO THE MANTELPIECE, WITHOUT TAKING HIS EYES OFF THE PORTRAIT, CLIMBS ON THE CHAIR AND SLASHES THE PORTRAIT WITH THE LETTER OPENER, INTENTLY AT FIRST AND THEN WITH GATHERING ABANDON.]"

JUNE 1, 1976 (EP. #3011)
Louise upset Mac and Rachel with news of the vandalism. Mac agreed when Louise begged him to be there when Robert came home. Scott agreed to help Pat divide up her assets with John. John brooded after Scott set up a vague meeting. Vic told Pam he worried Willis will jump at the chance to malign Robert with Alice. Louise told Mac that Iris was sleeping next to a box with the bust pieces and that all sleeping pills have been hidden. A brusque Ken wouldn't take scheduled time away from Rachel when Marianne wanted to conference. Dave told Pat he grew up without real affection, and had only two cold-blooded little girl cousins. John turned down Marianne's offer to accompany him to the dreaded meeting with Pat. Scott suggested to Mac and Vic that Iris has once again interceded with Pendleton.

JUNE 2, 1976 (EP. #3012)
Robert apologized for going berserk, assuring Louise she had no reason to fear him. He thanked her for her kindnesses before saying goodbye. Carol insisted she was protecting her by not explaining to Sharlene why she and Willis were going over copies of Pendleton sketches. Robert begged Clarice not to rob him of another child, but she wouldn't marry him since she felt he could never love anyone but Lenore. Carol tried to convince Willis that Angie was more of a threat than Sharlene. Louise informed Iris that Robert was the vandal and was making plans to leave town. Vic and Angie fretted when a drunk and despondent Robert phoned to back out of the project. Vic vowed to resign when Willis insisted on pushing Carol as Robert's replacement on his project. Vic told Sharlene he was resigning, for foolishly putting his faith in Robert. Iris told Louise she's always needed the attention of a man, and that only Mac understood her dread of being the center of gossip.

Clarice: "You deserve much better than Iris."
Robert: "I deserted much better to marry her."
...
Clarice: "No, I'm lucky... I'm going to have a baby to love for the first time in my life... and I won't let anything take it from me."
Robert: "[KISSING HER ON THE CHEEK] Then keep well... and be happy... for both me and the baby, huh? [HE TURNS AND GOES OUT QUICKLY. FADE OUT.]"

Vic: "I've had it with you, Willis."
Willis: "Then quit... it's a great big wonderful world out there for a guy with your talent and experience."
Vic: "You're right, and I've been foolish to stick around here with a second-rater like you-- [HE LEAVES QUICKLY, SLAMMING THE DOOR BEHIND HIM.]"
Carol: "Willis, do you know what you're doing?"
Willis: "You bet I do. It's worked! [HE LAUGHS] And so much easier than I thought. Vic's given up. [HE HUGS HER] Honey, from now on, it's you and me, all the way. [FADE OUT.]"

JUNE 3, 1976 (EP. #3013)
Iris felt Robert destroyed Mac's bust because he couldn't believe Mac's lies about her, but Robert couldn't listen to any more lies she makes up to cover the ones she's already told. Robert revealed he's leaving to protect Clarice from Iris, whom he promised to forget. Clarice told Angie that she and Robert parted friends. Angie was upset at Sharlene's news of Vic's resignation. Since she'll be going home soon, Emma told Ray she may have to tell him certain secret things about Willis so he'll be better able to protect Alice. Sharlene told Russ she needs to get in touch with Alice so she can prevent Vic's resignation. Carol doubted when Willis gloated that Alice will believe Vic resigned because of the untenable position Robert put them all in. Willis accepted Vic's resignation and ordered Angie to stay out of a disagreement on top management policy. Iris told Louise she'll get a great deal of satisfaction in getting even with Rachel for telling Robert about the baby. Robert left Iris after insisting he can't go to work on the project in Washington. Sally interrupted when Russ wanted to know why Emma felt it would be dangerous for Sharlene to be the one to tell the news to Alice. Vic told Pam he's been fighting a losing battle since the day Steve brought Willis into the firm. Clarice quailed at Iris's vow of payback.

Iris: "I'll do anything you say... We'll have the children you want so desperately..."
Robert: "I don't want that anymore."
Iris: "But you said you did."
Robert (Exit Line): "I would never burden a child of mine with a mother like you. Goodbye, Iris. [HE GOES OUT. IRIS STARES AFTER HIM, THEN TURNS TO GO INTO THE LIVING ROOM. SHE PAUSES AT THE DOORWAY, LEANS AGAINST THE WALL]. "
Iris: "I'll make you pay for this... I'll make everyone pay for this! [SHE CLOSES HER EYES, AND TRIES TO CONTROL HER EMOTIONS. FADE OUT.]"

Pam: "You mind if I don't say for dinner?"
Vic (Exit Line): "Of course not."
Pam: "We can't help if it things don't turn out the way we hope, can we? Excuse me... [SHE KISSES HIM. SHE PICKS UP HER PURSE AND HURRIES OUT, WITH VIC STARING AFTER HER.]"

JUNE 4, 1976 (EP. #3014)
Mac advised Dennis to play hard-to-get with Molly. Mac told Rachel that Jamie's feelings were serious after Jamie asked Rachel about Marianne. Mac let Rachel know he's learning that being a connoisseur of art and sharing your life with an artist are two entirely different things. Pam informed John and Jim that Vic resigned and left town after the collapse of his project. Ray told Gil he worries that Olive will show up on Alice's doorstep. Pat failed to resist Mac's efforts to do special favors for her. Mac was impressed that Louise was so concerned about Iris and Dennis's welfares. Pam admitted to John she has no evidence Willis is behind Vic's resignation. Liz was in disbelief when Jim told her Robert left Iris. Liz apologized again for her well-intended indiscretion, but Pat felt useful, needed, and happy. Mac came to inform Rachel about Iris, then admired her sculpture, but left quickly when Ken came out of the other room.

JUNE 7, 1976 (EP. #3015)
Pat assured Jim her life was fine except for Marianne's resentment. Louise bristled when Rocky and Beatrice urged her to follow Robert's example and leave Iris. Scott failed to prevent the meeting from deteriorating into recriminations: Pat insisted John brought everything on himself by being the one to walk out, and he was sure she wanted to sell the house to punish him. Marianne built a case against Dave, but Pat refused to stop seeing him even when Marianne vowed not to see her again. Emma was shocked when Willis decided it was time she learned that Sharlene made her living in San Diego by selling her favors to lonely sailors from the navy base. Ray and Sally greeted Alice when Jim and Beatrice brought her home from the airport. Willis told Alice that the firm lost the project because Vic insisted on giving it to Robert. Scott suggested Mac hire Pat to replace his secretary, Miss Bentley. Marianne thought it wonderful John was considering moving back into the house. Pat told Dave that Marianne made terrible accusations against him.

JUNE 8, 1976 (EP. #3016)
Ken rejected Iris's commission to do another bust of Mac. Iris promised Rachel she'll regret ruining her marriage to Robert. Willis denied Emma's suspicions he was behind Vic's resignation. Willis convinced Alice and Ray that Carol was capable enough to take over for Robert. Pat came over with Dave and suggested Alice ask John or Pam about Vic. Iris accused Mac of betraying her to Robert after she took him into her heart as she never took anyone before. Emma phoned to warn Sharlene not to come over as she'd let it slip to Willis that Sharlene tried to call Alice in Chadwell about Vic, but Russ's presence prevented Sharlene from verifying what Willis told Emma about San Diego. Ken offered Molly a job modeling for his classes, then told Daryll he'll probably flunk Marianne. Fearing distractions, Rachel wouldn't reconsider Mac's idea to build her a studio. Sharlene made excuses to Russ when Pat wondered why Emma would have told her Alice was too tired for visitors.

Iris: "None of us changes... we just become more and more of the same thing..."
Mac: "That's certainly true of you, but Rachel is different."

JUNE 9, 1976 (EP. #3017)
Carol informed Willis that Pendleton's given them the go-ahead, but she was upset that as head architect she would be forced to spend a lot of time in Washington. Russ worried about Sharlene's jittery nervousness. Sharlene hung up on Willis's threats, telling Russ it was an anonymous caller who keeps saying horrible things. Pat arranged to give Clarice all her baby furniture. Jim and Pam wondered what Willis intended to say about Vic's resignation. Iris told Liz she'll get Robert back by clearing him of Clarice's slander. Angie told Sharlene they can protect the firm if they both keep a close eye on Willis and Carol. Sharlene begged to let her be happy, but Willis felt he couldn't let her go on being a sword over his head. Mac told Pat her new position as his executive assistant entails managing his schedule and itinerary, liaisoning with Miss Veasey in New York, and traveling. Liz was cold to Clarice, but Pat insisted she was a courageous, remarkable woman. Iris stormed in and demanded to Pam and Jim that she be allowed to interrupt John's schedule to speak to him, as she wanted to change her name back to Carrington, among other things.

Liz: "Oh, Pat, you've changed since you broke up with John."
Pat: "I certainly hope so."

JUNE 10, 1976 (EP. #3018)
Iris pleaded Liz's case and badmouthed Rachel to Jim. When John refused to make time for her, Iris vowed to transfer her business to Keith Morrison in New York. Clarice warned Ada and Gil that Rachel was in danger from Iris. After Michael and Glenda came by the studio, Ken let Rachel know that Jamie's sweet on Marianne. Pam advised John not to brood over Iris. Willis complained about Ray's presence at the meeting. When Willis claimed to Alice and John that Vic resigned without recommending a replacement architect, Pam stepped up to reveal Willis forced Vic out by insisting he use Carol. Willis denied it, so Alice ended up thanking him for retrieving the situation. Russ asked Dave to give Sharlene a check-up. Rachel was too afraid when Dave suggested having another baby. Glenda apologized to John after Michael, who was talking to Jim, ran out of the office. Iris warned Ada and Gil her New York attorney will prosecute them for slander. Willis fumed when Ray promised Alice he'd keep her fully informed of firm business. Willis listened with interest as Ray refused to give Olive money to visit him just because she's impressed that he's on the road to a better future than she anticipated.

JUNE 11, 1976 (EP. #3019)
Rachel was impressed when Mac gave Jamie and Dennis advice about girls. Ray told Ada and Gil he won't let Olive use their boys to get her own way. Mac was grateful when Rocky and Brooks filled in details about Dennis and Molly. Beatrice refused to send money to Olive, who was interested that both she and Ray work for rich Mac Cory. Glenda urged Michael and Marianne not to judge their folks. Jamie asked Marianne to a party at his house. Willis learned Olive was in California when he lied to Ada and Gil that an upset Alice confided in him she worried about the embarrassment Olive might cause. Ada warned Rachel that Iris will use her sculpting against her. Pat told Dave she owes it to Mac to be friendlier to Rachel. In the game room during the party, Willis watched as Ray wrote down Olive's address and gave it to Beatrice; Jamie showed Marianne the view of the bay; Michael and Glenda danced as Dennis watched. Dave and Pat admired Rachel's sculpture as Mac poured drinks. Marianne was aghast to come upon Dave and Pat billing and cooing in the sunset on the terrace.

JUNE 14, 1976 (EP. #3020)
Dave helped Pat pack her belongings into cartons, and they weren't ruffled when John and Liz came over and found them together so early in the day. Michael and Glenda were puzzled when Pat said she hadn't seen Marianne at the party. Sharlene apologized to Russ for asking again if they can move away, then told Carol she was quitting as soon as it was convenient. Beatrice discussed Ray, Jamie, and Dennis's difficulties with Rocky and Louise. Willis brought Beatrice flowers, then watched as she slipped the address paper into a small telephone directory. Willis retrieved the slip of paper when Beatrice was out of the room. Marianne confirmed Liz's suspicion that Pat has been indiscreet with Dave. Sharlene admitted to Dave she's stressed over a past shame. Carol sulked when Willis wouldn't tell her why he had to go out of town. After Dave, Michael, and Glenda carried cartons out, Pat admitted to Marianne she's in love with Dave.

JUNE 15, 1976 (EP. #3021)
John and Jim assured Pam that Ray will help protect Alice from Willis. When Liz asked Jim to dinner, John warned him not to take what she'll tell him too seriously. Alice told Angie that she dreads telling Willis that she and Ray will be sharing Vic's office. Liz told Jim that after a summer in Italy, Helen will be moving to Washington to help Lenore with Wally. Jim left the restaurant in a huff after Liz claimed Pat was having an affair with Dave. Carol couldn't understand Sharlene's desire for a house and babies, then revealed her mother, just released from a private New York sanatarium, destroyed her weak father. Carol was thrown when Alice said she'll be relying heavily on Ray's business experience. Russ suggested Liz find more constructive ways of spending her time. Jim suggested John take on another lawyer, then Marianne offered to move back into the house with him. Pam told Angie that Willis was using Vic's resignation as a springboard to take control of the firm. Alice insisted Carol fill Ray in on the project. Russ worried when Sharlene freaked to learn Willis is in California.

JUNE 16, 1976 (EP. #3022)
Sally sung "Frere Jacques" as Emma brushed her hair, then Molly snubbed Emma's boxed lunch. Sally spilled some beans to Olive. Louise failed to interest Iris in visiting Millie Marberry in Cap Ferrat, but convinced her Mac would give her advice about changing back her will. Alice requested John's help in making sure Willis respected Ray, unlike Vic, then they were intrigued when Angie showed them papers from Willis's private files. Mac acquainted Pat with the foreign publishers. Iris asked Mac to speak to Keith about her divorcing Robert. Alice assured a worried Angie she'll take responsibility for Willis's files, then Olive warned her away from Ray. Daryll was amused when Sally teased Molly about her bus romances. Emma informed Daryll she can't afford to send Molly to Bay State. Glenda helped Pat pack dishware, then a martyring John gave Pat the car.

JUNE 17, 1976 (EP. #3023)
Ray asked Alice to dinner; she told Emma of Willis's trip; John told her of discrepancies in Willis's files. Russ worried about Sharlene, whom Emma warned about Willis. Angie told Gil and Ray that Alice got a call from a strange woman. Sharlene disbelieved Emma, who felt Russ would forgive the grief-stricken things she did. Angie was mum when John and Alice wondered if Willis was keeping two sets of books. In his hotel room, Willis offered to help Olive get Ray back as long as she doesn't put on an act with him. Ray told Emma he worried about Alice's unpleasant phone call. Russ came to the station to tell Gil he suspects Willis is blackmailing Sharlene. Alice and Angie wondered about the inverted "V" code on Willis's files. Alice warned Ray that Olive was intent on coming to town. Olive let Willis know she was aware of the situations in Bay City.

JUNE 18, 1976 (EP. #3024)
Rachel warned Mac that Iris was using her legal problems to draw him back into her life. After a call from Ken, Rachel asked Brooks to drive her to the studio, and the boys came along for a lift to school. At Rocky's suggestion, Beatrice asked Sally over to ride Freckles. Russ commiserated with Jim, who wouldn't let Liz wrangle an invite to his dinner party. Mac asked Scott to convince Clarice to let him set up a trust fund for the baby. Rachel didn't notice Ken's meaningful glance when he told her he's decided not to go away for the summer. Sally left with Rocky to ride Freckles, then Jamie and Molly convinced Dennis to throw a pool party. Beatrice told Ada and Gil she'd like Sally to spend the summer in the mansion. Mac asked Russ over to dinner when he came by to congratulate Pat on her new position. Liz told Beatrice and Jim she'd like to get on better with her. Ada thought Rachel dumb to annoy Mac by showing up late for dinner.

JUNE 21, 1976 (EP. #3025)
Ada cautioned Rachel not to take advantage of Mac's good nature. Marianne offered to help John look up precedents in the Bancroft case. Jim told Michael of a construction job at the firm, then Liz tried to explain Marianne's feelings. Pat showed off her new apartment, and Dave was pleased she had no photos of John on display. Iris reminded John of how dissatisfied she was with his services. Rachel fed Mac after they kissed and made up, but then ignored him when Ken came over to critique her sketches. Iris told Louise and Rocky she intends to send Dennis to a prep school back east. Michael was glad when Pat and Dave dropped in at Jim's, but Marianne fled after dropping in moments later. Ray told Ada and Gil he'll help Alice despite Willis's objections. Iris made a snide remark to Mac after finding Rachel in the kitchen with Ken.

Crawl: "Mac brooding in the kitchen -- alone."

JUNE 22, 1976 (EP. #3026)
Louise told Iris that Rachel's servants are loyal to her because she makes allowances for their personal lives. Sally was disappointed and Emma perturbed when Daryll arrived to drive Molly to school. Sharlene encouraged Alice to keep on letting Ray advise her about the firm. Iris lavished some attention on Dennis, but he no longer felt part of the family. Ken encouraged Rachel's art work since if she becomes successful, no one can claim she was just using it as a diversion. Sharlene offered to keep an eye on Molly when Emma considered letting her stay on after graduation to help Alice look after Sally. Russ told Alice that Sharlene has been even more uneasy since Willis has been in California. Molly vowed to find a job rather than return home to feed hens and cook for the threshers, then made out with Daryll in his car after suggesting he seek a summer job from Willis. Ken threw Iris out after she vowed to ruin Rachel for trying to turn Dennis against her.

Iris: "Rachel may be gifted, but it's not in art, my dear."

Cover note: "Light exploded (boom man hurt)," in Emma/Sharlene scene.

JUNE 23, 1976 (EP. #3027)
Mac asked Pat to go and prepare for his arrival in New York. Michael told Glenda how sad he was that Marianne was letting her life fall by the wayside. Liz worried that Michael was living like a vagabond, then cried about needing the security of past attachments. Not wanting to speak to him, John had Pam phone Scott about the transfer of Iris's affairs. John was concerned that Marianne was neglecting her studies. Scott told Mac that Keith refuses to take on another client. Liz moaned to Alice and Russ about the loss of cohesion in their family, then Molly brought Daryll over for supper. Marianne snubbed Scott, who found Pam more receptive to his advances. Russ and Jim suggested Daryll fill in as Carol's temporary replacement for Sharlene. Alice disagreed when Liz suggested Molly move into a dormitory. Michael turned down John's offer to work in his office.

JUNE 24, 1976 (EP. #3028)
Willis wouldn't tell Olive his reasons for funding her stay in Bay City. After they ran into Jim and Beatrice at Tallboys, Marianne told Liz that Molly stole Daryll from her. Scott recommended John hire Jeff Stone, a lawyer just out of law school. Willis phoned to tell Alice he was in California on a personal matter, then told her he was pleased Ray was advising her.

JUNE 25, 1976 (EP. #3029)
Willis admitted to Olive he's helping her get Ray back to help him secure his brother's company. Willis agreed to pay off Doris and send Olive's boys (10 and 8) to camp in British Columbia. Jim explained to Ray Beatrice's fears of losing Sally. Sharlene handed the phone to Carol and left quickly with Russ when Willis phoned. Carol was peeved when Willis asked her to reserve a hotel suite for a friend. Brooks helped Rachel move a pedestal, then Ada and Gil told her about a surprise party for Dennis. Jim, Alice, Ray, and Emma assured Beatrice of Sally's safety, then Russ and Sharlene assured Emma they'd keep an eye on Molly. Liz let John know Marianne was sacrificing her social life for him. Sharlene told Emma she worries about who Willis was bringing back from California. Rachel was surprised to hear Pat was staying in Mac's NY townhouse.

Sharlene: "Emma, I can't face things after you go home tomorrow."
Emma: (Tresa Hughes, Exit Line) "I won't be that far away. If Willis starts anything, I'll come back and put a stop to it once and for all."

Crawl: "1. Frame LR -- Alice and Ray come in, sit sofa -- talk happily. 2. Willis Hotel -- Olive and Willis chat, Willis on bed, Olive chair -- rise -- pace"

Notes: Act II was rewritten to exclude Daryll because, as it said on the cover sheet, "R. Dunne missing."

JUNE 28, 1976 (EP. #3030)
Ada and Gil wouldn't stay for dinner, while Rachel simmered about Mac not telling her about Pat's trip. Dennis was puzzled when Ada, Gil, Louise, and Jamie stopped Rocky from spilling the beans about the party. Clarice told Dave she was sure Iris was conspiring against her. Liz interrupted a pleasant phone call from Pat to accuse Dave of encouraging Pat to break away from her family. Ada and Gil insisted Clarice stay for supper. Mac was disgruntled when Dave interrupted his evening with Rachel. John assured Marianne that his marriage would have broken up even if she hadn't gotten into trouble with Chris. Clarice left when Rocky and Louise came over to discuss the party with Ada and Gil. John was grateful when Liz helped convince Marianne to attend the party. Dennis slapped Jamie on the back when Marianne called. Rachel was irritated when Mac laughed over the phone with Pat.

JUNE 29, 1976 (EP. #3031)
Rachel, Jamie, Brooks, and Beatrice lifted their wine glasses as Mac toasted Dennis on winning a gold swimming medal, but Dennis was more pleased when Molly phoned to say she'll be around all summer. Ada and Gil came to help Rocky and Louise set up the patio. Ken tried to discourage Marianne from quitting college. Brooks complimented Beatrice on her appearance. Daryll invited himself along when Jamie phoned to invite Molly to the party. A baffled Ray told Beatrice that Olive's disappeared after coming into some money. Mac blamed her many absences when Rachel groused about being kept in the dark about him taking trips with Pat. Mac apologized for being too dense to realize he was losing her to an avocation. Michael, Glenda, and Marianne arrived at the party. Marianne was frosty when Gil ushered Daryll in with Molly. Louise led everyone in a practice of "Jolly Good Fellow," then told Ada and Gil she fears Iris's wrath over the party. Everyone sung to Dennis, then Daryll looked on as Molly ran over and kissed Dennis on the cheek. Rachel told Ken he was right that Mac resents her time away from him.

Marianne: (About Daryll) "No, he's jealous of the attention I give Daddy--"

JUNE 30, 1976 (EP. #3032)
Sally told Alice, Ray, Beatrice, and Jim her summer plans. Only Liz agreed with Beatrice that Molly might neglect Sally for boys. Willis helped Olive settle into her suite, making sure he left no trace of their association. Marianne distrusted Daryll's claim he never intended to push her into anything, then accepted a date with Jamie for Daryll's benefit. Glenda advised Michael to make up with John for Marianne's sake. Gil and Rocky noticed that Molly and Dennis gave Daryll the cold shoulder. Alice encouraged Liz to join Helen in Italy. Willis wasn't worried when Carol felt Alice might marry Ray and give him control of the firm. Molly informed Daryll she saw Dennis in a new light after realizing how impressed her friends were with his rich family. Marianne was disgusted when Michael accused her of trying to take Pat's place with John. Alice told Willis he'd just missed Emma's going-away party. Olive phoned to inform Ray she was in town.
