SYNOPSES: JULY - DECEMBER 1979

JULY 2, 1979 (EP. #3804)
Willis and Gwen had champagne with Mimi and Vince, who worried about Larry. Charlie reproached Fred for allowing his gloomy predictions to dismay Clarice. Eileen was hurt and confused when Joey explained he didn't require her to act like girls like Sally. Sally was angry that Jim had phoned Alice. Worried about Rachel's influence, Janice begged Mac to have his visits with Amanda in his suite. Charlie told Vince that the swelling in Larry's back masks the true extent of the damage. Joey and Eileen pledged their love on a hilltop overlooking the city. Jim, Alice, and Scott realized Sally may have been upset over Joey. Clarice read to Larry from Interview with the Vampire, but he felt miserable over being paralyzed. Joey assured Rose he was being honorable with Eileen. Janice relayed the message to Mac when Rachel phoned that she would be returning at the end of the week. Joey promised Alice and Scott he'd try to help them get through to Sally. Mimi wheeled Vince in for a visit, but Larry just exploded on seeing his bandaged head, and hearing his fractured speech and pipe dreams.

JULY 3, 1979 (EP. #3805)
Ted didn't believe Iris's claim of an affair between Brian and Elena. Angie was ungracious when Willis presented her with a diamond bracelet. Vince told Mimi the secret Angie told him. Brian was dubious when Jamie told him Blaine seemed contrite. Douglas told Dennis and Elena that Sally destroyed "Home Again." Karen visited Ted at the newsroom, where he advised her to protect Michael by letting him think she and Ted were an item. Blaine insisted to Jamie she didn't want a settlement from him. Iris informed Dennis that Elena had been in a state of undress in Ted's apartment. Angie initially told Vince he'd imagined her revelations, then he told her she wasn't strong enough to protect Willis like Gwen was. Ted had a tough time telling Michael that Karen no longer wanted to see him. Blaine promised Larry she'd find a job to help him pay his hospital bills. Jamie was excited to introduce Brooks to Cecile, but was disappointed when she was accompanied to the mansion by Dennis. Brian overheard Iris viciously attack Elena and admit she threw Dennis and Cecile together.

JULY 4, 1979 (EP. #3806)
Brian threw Iris out of Elena's house. Liz was in shock when Mac announced Janice would be working with Pat on the new magazine. Joey agreed when Sally felt seeing him as a friend would help curb her impulse to steal. Rachel was indignant when Kirk's wife, June Laverty, thought that Rachel was the latest occupant of Kirk's love nest. After Frank said he broke his contract with his publisher over creative differences, he made a deal to write a novel for Mac. Pat told Mac she looked forward to working with Frank, and that she was very excited by Janice's original and provocative ideas. In their limo, Kirk was angry to learn June had seen Rachel. Brian was grateful he had gotten to see Iris in action, but Elena fretted she was stopping Dennis from having a more fulfilling relationship. Eileen was intrigued by Charlie's Serenity House brochure. Charlie told Ada that a job might help keep Fred away from her. Sally detailed her rap sheet when Morgan was confused at Joey's presence in her house. Brian slapped Iris when she referred to Elena as a rapacious creature, then he announced their marriage was a lost cause. Fred was too proud to accept Charlie's job offer. Eileen met Phil. To rescue Ada, Charlie lied to Fred that she was already having dinner with him. Rachel told Kirk to save his smooth-talking for someone else.

June: (Intro Line, to Rachel) "I'm June Laverty. Kirk's wife."

JULY 5, 1979 (EP. #3807)
Gwen was intrigued when Willis wondered what he'd do for an assistant after Janice announced she was taking a leave of absence to work at Cory. Vince and Mimi decided to move to a rehabilitation hospital in Los Angeles that specialized in aphasia. Michael vowed to Karen he'd find out what she was really up to with Ted. Paul informed Rita he'd be willing to be excommunicated and damned in order to get a divorce from her. Clarice offered to get Blaine a job waitressing at the campus coffee shop. Ted phoned to say he was flying in to see Ben. Willis wanted to help Vince pay his hospital bills, but Vince was more interested in making him realize Gwen was the strong woman who could stand up to him. Rose thwarted Rita's attempts to make her feel sinful. Pat said she'd be happy to introduce Frank to people. Blaine lied to the process server that she was Mrs. Ewing, not Mrs. Frame. Rose told Paul she realizes she's been wrong to judge others. Jumbo listened from the hallway as Ted offered to pay Ben for info on loan sharks for a story, then he burst in and began beating Ted up. Charlie told Vince he wouldn't dream of dissolving their partnership. Vince advised Gwen to "stick to guns" and leveled with her by revealing Angie was pregnant.

Mimi: "Have you thought that through, Vince?"
Vince: "Isn't idea good?"
Mimi: (Exit Line) "It means leaving Bay City. Do you want that?"
Vince: "I want whatever gets fastest well.[VINCE LOOKS AT MIMI WITH HOPE, AS SHE STROKES HIS CHEEK WITH THE BACK OF HER HAND, LOVINGLY. COMMERCIAL]"

Gwen: "Who else knows, Vince?"
Vince: "No one, I think."
Gwen: "Not even Willis?"
Vince: (Exit Line) "No. Especially not Willis. [GWEN TURNS AWAY, EXTREMELY SHAKEN, AS VINCE WATCHES HER, SYMPATHETICALLY. COMMERCIAL]"

Crawl: "Orderly making bed."

Notes: Written next to the Rita/Rose scene (typically heavy-handed about religion), a call for the scene to be redone as, "The ladies broke up during the fade-out."

JULY 6, 1979 (EP. #3808)
Ada welcomed Rachel home. Sylvie was dismayed that Iris intended to fill Brian's shoes with Kirk. In the pool, Dennis retaliated against Cecile's splashes without even noticing that Elena had withdrawn into the house. Sally was annoyed that Alice took time off work to be with her, but agreed to Jim's idea to see a counselor. Mac promoted Jamie into Pat's assistant so he could learn to be an editor. Rachel visited Mac at the office and said she'd prefer if Mac visited Amanda at the house that night. Sally changed her mind about not wanting anything to do with Phil when he told her Eileen could very well be his next conquest. Iris could barely contain her glee when Liz told her Mac had give Janice her own office. Dennis interrupted Jamie and Cecile's lunch, and was discomfited when Jamie confessed he was becoming very attracted to Cecile. Janice was wary when Iris offered her blessings. Morgan brushed the tears from her face when Sally talked of the traveling her family did because of her father's job. Elena was stoic as Cecile and Dennis went to have a picnic in the guesthouse. Dennis kissed Cecile passionately when he admitted being confused about his feelings for her. Mac and Rachel discussed birthday plans for Amanda during his visit.

Notes: On the spec. sheet: "12:00-12:30 Bring Nicole's [Amanda] food for lunch -- we'll feed here in the scene -- choc. pudding? Is that ok?" As seen in Best of Mac/Rachel 1979-1983, Amanda was indeed fed chocolate pudding.

JULY 9, 1979 (EP. #3809)
Janice waiting outside in the limo put a damper on Mac and Rachel's evening, but finally she told Brooks she was leaving. Dennis was startled when Cecile revealed Iris told her of his feelings for her, but he had to admit they were genuine. The evening quickly turned ugly for Mac and Rachel. Iris jumped on Vivien's idea to see if Kirk was home. Morgan's sense that something wasn't kosher was confirmed when Eileen found Rita's suitcase missing. Willis encouraged Janice with Mac. Ada was skeptical when Charlie told her Blaine had changed. Cecile's appearance prevented Dennis from telling Elena his solution to their dilemma. Morgan and Eileen shared their worries about Rita with Paul. Rachel promised Ada she wouldn't let Janice get to her anymore. Vivien positioned herself behind Iris and made drinking gestures to try to indicate to Dennis that Iris had had one too many, then he gave her an ultimatum to stay out of his life. Rita begged Carmela, the mother superior, to be allowed to stay at the convent. Janice informed Mac it would be better if she moved out.

JULY 10, 1979 (EP. #3810)
Gwen accused Angie of getting pregnant to keep Willis from returning to her. Joey told Eileen not to feel guilty about Rita's disappearance. Sally said she'd steal some pills from Alice when Phil suggested getting Eileen to think Sally and Joey were an item. Pat looked around at the office sadly as Brian read John's provisions for Marianne's trust fund. Scott and Karen briefed Frank on the legal standing of his obligations, then they were surprised to see a bandaged Ted. Willis told Angie his plans to build the extravagant Frame House on the old road to Ogden. Scott was bothered when Alice canceled their date to be with Sally. Gwen was put out when Willis spoke of having a large family like his parents. Paul told Rose about Rita. Michael left Pat and Brian at their table and left Tallboys when Ted and Karen came in. Pat came over to be friendly with Karen as Ted was lying about the cause of his injuries. Angie told Rose she was pregnant and admitted she still has reservations about Willis's lust for power. Phil escorted Eileen home and argued in favor of Rita's feelings. Willis said he accepted it when Angie admitted getting pregnant to keep him from going back to Gwen.

Notes: The Joey/Eileen scene had to be redone because, "Actor looked at prompter."

JULY 11, 1979 (EP. #3811)
Janice was pissed when Liz let Rachel and not her see Mac. Mac was sad to hear Brian had reached the end of his rope with Iris. Larry fought back tears when Blaine pressed her salary into his hands. Elena was in agony when Cecile described her burgeoning relationship with Dennis then said she'd have to find a way to put Jamie down gently. Rachel was worried when her eyesight went blurry as she spoke to Mac. At Blaine's urging, Larry confessed to Clarice his fears. Liz told Rachel about the magazine after Iris let it drop about Janice's office. Dennis bugged Elena about her strange mood, but backed off when she mentioned his feelings for Cecile. Iris was surprised to learn a returned Jeff Stone was Kirk's executive assistant, and was glad he was no longer involved with Vera Findley, then she brought him over to her suite for a drink. Blaine's presence at the coffee shop prevented Cecile from adequately discouraging Jamie. Iris was pleased when Kirk insisted he was more interested in her than in Rachel. Jamie accused Dennis of playing fast and loose with two people he purported to care about. Rachel fainted in Louise's arms after deriding Mac's decision to hire Janice.

'JEFF IS UNLOCKING KIRK'S DOOR WHEN IRIS APPROACHES FROM THE ELEVATORS. SHE PAUSES TO LOOK MORE CLOSELY AT JEFF.'
Iris: "Pardon me, but aren't you Jeff Stone? [JEFF TURNS TO HER, WITH A LOOK OF RECOGNITION]"
Jeff: (Intro Line) "Iris... [IRIS COMES FORWARD]"
Iris: "I haven't seen you in years. How are you, Jeff?"
Jeff: "I'm fine. You look terrific."

Jamie: "Cecile, this is Blaine Ewing. Blaine, I'd like you to meet--"
Blaine: "The name is Blaine Frame, Jamie. We're still married, in case you've forgotten. [TO CECILE] I'm very happy to meet you."
Cecile: "[QUIETLY] Hello."

JULY 12, 1979 (EP. #3812)
Rachel pooh-poohed Louise's concern. Dennis promised Cecile he wouldn't hurt her the way Philippe did. Ben agreed to give Ted the story after Ted waved cash under his nose and said they were safe in Bay City. Carmela reminded Rita she married Paul while she was considering joining the order, then instructed her to try to reunite with Paul before rejoining the order. Elena showed Rachel her smashed sculpture, then Rachel met Frank when he came in to show Elena some Asian artwork. Brian and Michael resolved not to let Ted's behavior cause a strain between them. Rita came home as Phil was questioning Eileen about her role in driving Rita away. Rachel told Ada about Janice's phony project. Paul felt badly when Rita informed him she'd sought comfort at the Sisters of Mercy convent. Brian and Karen realized Ted gave them different stories about his injury. Frank had a drink at Pat's and told her about his plans for the semi-autobiographical novel, then Liz came by and assumed a romance was brewing. Red Bananas, AKA Sidney Turkel, sent Jumbo to Bay City when he learned of the reporter's plans. Dennis was sweet and Elena self-sacrificing when she told him she was happy he was interested in Cecile now.

Elena: "No matter what happens, I'll always continue to care for you... and I hope you'll continue to care for me. If we can't be lovers, we can still be the best of friends. [DENNIS KISSES HER HAND TENDERLY, AS ELENA LOOKS AWAY, FIGHTING TEARS. COMMERCIAL]"

JULY 13, 1979 (EP. #3813)
Larry released a whoop of joy after showing Clarice he could manage to move his foot a little. Sally came to visit Alice at work and stole a bottle of Tuinal sedatives Linda had left out. Janice informed Mac that she couldn't be a part of his life if there was the possibility of a reconciliation with Rachel. Sally waited until Morgan left, then asked Joey to accompany her to the police station. Jeff shared with Kirk and June the info he dug up on Cory Publishers. June accused Kirk of buying strong companies to offset his weaker ones. Gwen was embarrassed when Sylvie introduced June as Kirk's wife. Sylvie expected the worst when Iris dropped by the house and met June. Larry was frustrated when he couldn't move his foot for the doctor, but he finally managed to do it. Janice advised Willis to be happy about the baby. Sally wadded up the note Eileen left Joey saying she'd come back to see him later tonight. Willis was disturbed to learn Gwen already knew about the baby. Fred advised Larry to learn how to handle a wheelchair when Larry couldn't wiggle his foot, which made Larry so angry he later tried to stand but fell. Vivien tip-toed out when she came across Kirk and Iris kissing. Joey drank his drugged drink as he had lunch with Sally in her car.

JULY 16, 1979 (EP. #3814)
Eileen and Rose were both puzzled at Joey's whereabouts. Sally led a groggy Joey to the back of his van. Clarice panicked to find Larry unconscious on the floor. Dennis admitted to Cecile he had been seeing another girl but that he'd broken off with her. Charlie and Ada pressed Rachel to hire Fred when she admitted Hansen won't likely return after what Sven put him through, then they received a call about Larry. Rita boasted to Eileen that Rose said she wouldn't marry Paul. Joey didn't have the strength to resist when Sally laid him down on the mattress. Mac and Janice tried to comfort Clarice; then Blaine angrily told them Fred was to blame for Larry's accident. Cecile tried to get Elena to tell her who Dennis's other girl was. Willis tried to find out from Rose how long Angie had known she's pregnant, but she opined Angie's constant lying proves Willis brings out the worst in her. Elena tried to change his mind when Dennis thought it would be better for her if he moved out and stopped working at the gallery. Eileen killed more time with Rose. Rachel viciously laid into Janice while the others went in to see Larry. Sally unbuttoned her blouse, put her hair in disarray, tugged Joey's shirttails out of his pants, and pretended to make love to Joey when Eileen opened the rear door, then smiled to herself as Eileen ran off in distress.

JULY 17, 1979 (EP. #3815)
Eileen sobbed in Rita's arms that she never wanted to see Joey again. Rose worried about Joey's waning grogginess. Iris tried to goad Sylvie into using her house-warming to throw a party, then overheard Dennis tell her he'd taken up with Cecile. Ted pressed Ben for the names of people Jumbo has killed, which Ted tape-recorded. "Mr. Stewart" (Jumbo) got Ted's place of employ from Brian. Cecile agreed to do what she could to help Iris reconcile with Dennis. Karen let it slip to Michael that Ted's condition was related. Rita refused to let Morgan see Eileen. Ted asked Ben to infiltrate the local games when his editor, Jennings Duncan, told him to find a local angle, then they both ran off when Jumbo called from the front desk. Sally informed Joey he had food poisoning last night. Ted interrupted Iris asking Brian about Elena to request he put the interview tapes in the safe. Cecile agreed to help Dennis find an apartment, then they made love. Eileen told Rita what she saw.

Ted: "I lied. Everybody does, the only difference is I admit it."

Cecile: "Vivien's great. How did you find her?"
Iris: "I don't know, it must have been an adverse relation of the planets."

JULY 18, 1979 (EP. #3816)
Rachel told Louise she'd hire Fred to do the heavy work in the garden. Willis exploded at Angie for her deceptions. Sally told Phil about her Mickey Finn. Pat and Liz raved about Frank's work to Mac. Rose offered to let a sad Angie move back in. Gwen was abashed when Willis accused her of taking advantage of the situation. Phil sweet-talked Rita by bad-mouthing Joey. Jim was unhappy that Sally left when Liz came over to gossip. Rachel admitted to Dr. Hammond that she let her hypertension prescription lapse when Dave moved away. Frank was a little bowled over when Mac brought Scott in to draw up a contract. Morgan wondered why Sally asked so many questions about Joey and Eileen. Willis and Angie made up when he agreed they should be married when they baby is born. Rachel and Frank got reacquainted on the beach.

Notes: Written next to some dialogue of Mac's: "Doug redid this."

JULY 19, 1979 (EP. #3817)
Larry grimaced and told Clarice to get the nurse. June wondered where Kirk would get the money to buy Mac out. Ted tried to soothe Karen's fears. Paul was annoyed by Rita's triumphant attitude. Michael chatted with Nellie, the new secretary, then listened to the tapes in Brian's safe. Clarice chided Jamie to give Blaine a chance. Kirk was pleased when Iris wanted to throw him a party and invite Mac. Ted informed an inquisitive Gwen that June comes from old money. Paul discouraged an impatient Joey from storming over to Rita's. June wondered if Jeff had any old contacts in Mac's company. Kirk insisted he was just using Iris to get to Mac when June worried he couple replace her with Iris since they're so similar. Larry showed Jamie the money Blaine had given him and asked him to take it easy on her. Morgan was shocked when Eileen told him what she'd seen in the van. Ted learned Ben had vacated his hotel room. Karen was floored that Michael knew everything.

Notes: Kirk intended to offer 35 a share for Cory stock, then going for 20 and a quarter.

JULY 20, 1979 (EP. #3818)
Cecile and Dennis panicked when Iris almost caught them in bed. Mac disapproved of the magazine having a sports and entertainment section. Rachel informed Mac she won't let him disinherit the children in favor of Janice. Joey was furious that Morgan thought he might be covering something up with Sally. Dennis managed to get rid of Iris. Michael promised to help Karen when she admitted still loving him. Karen was terrified when Jumbo demanded to know where Ben was. Cecile was stunned when Blaine gossiped about Dennis's affair with the fake old countess. Mac worried about Iris's infatuation with Kirk, and noticed when she slipped and called him "Daddy." Sally convinced Morgan and Joey that Eileen got the wrong impression. Rachel snapped at Louise, then Frank brought her some more driftwood. Janice and Mac had drinks with Iris and Kirk. After requesting the boys leave them alone, Sally deliberately lied unconvincingly to Eileen. Elena was devastated when Cecile railed at her and turned against her for deceiving her. Ted began to break down when he told an angry Karen how much he loved her. Ted dashed off to rescue Ben but Jumbo chloroformed him. Rachel impulsively asked Frank (from Ohio) to dinner.

JULY 23, 1979 (EP. #3819)
Ted was darkly humorous when Jumbo took him on a fateful ride. Dennis wasn't convinced when Elena insisted they had just taken the easy way out by not telling Cecile. Mac used Janice as a shield when Kirk wanted to talk business. Elena was miserable that she might lose Cecile. Sally was indignant when Morgan and Joey hinted her story was dubious. Karen filled Ben in when he phoned. In a small clearing, Jumbo (killer of 50) was about to pull the trigger when Ted mentioned the incriminating tapes are in the hands of Mike Randolph, then Jumbo struck him with the gun. Mac shared his suspicions of Kirk with Janice. Eileen cried to Rita that Joey lied to her. Cecile forgave Elena but wouldn't think of accepting Dennis back. Paul promised Joey he'd find out what was going on. Kirk sullenly told June he couldn't get anywhere with Mac, and ordered Jeff to renew his ties with Scott. Cecile bitterly accused Dennis of crudely tossing Elena aside for her. Karen convinced Michael not to involve the police. Ted hurled a chair at Jumbo and ran off as Jumbo picked up Brian's safe.

Notes: The law office set was reinforced for the last scene.

JULY 24, 1979 (EP. #3820)
Iris was appalled when Cecile informed her it was over with Dennis. Michael was worried when Brian told him someone stole his safe. Jamie didn't believe Rachel's paranoid rants about Janice. Scott didn't hold anything against Jeff for the Ray/Olive divorce, and Jeff said he regrets trying to alter Cory's trust fund. Jeff ran into Rachel, who said she'd need his services. Dennis was surprised to find Sylvie and Jim working in her old suite. Larry kicked when Linda tried to goad him into trying out a wheelchair. Clarice was thrilled when Larry could twitch his whole leg. Michael told Pat that high-powered hoodlums have arrived in Bay City. Iris was surprised Dennis was moving into the suite and furious to learn Blaine is the cause of his split. Rachel asked Jeff to handle her divorce, and Kirk gave his okay in hopes Rachel would reveal some useful inside information about Mac's company. Cecile accepted Jamie's explanation of why he couldn't tell her about Elena and Dennis. Pat convinced Karen to fill Brian in. Iris cornered Blaine at the coffee shop and threatened she better leave town. When Iris made noises about informing the manager of Blaine's criminal past, Blaine relented and went to get the manager. She returned with Clarice, who remarked Iris was up to her old tricks as Iris had once gotten her fired by complaining to her manager. Michael and Karen filled Brian in.

Notes: Rachel's sculpture, "Mustang Three."

JULY 25, 1979 (EP. #3821)
Jeff was curious to find Rachel with Frank. Rita was smug when Eileen didn't believe Paul's claims of Joey's honesty. Ted told a doctor he'd had headaches after getting hit on the head with a gun butt. Angie overheard Kirk persuade Willis to build his showcase house even if he couldn't afford it. Ted chartered a yacht from Captain Sweet. Louise fretted to Brooks that Frank was interested in Rachel. Alice left the room so Sally could tell Jim about her mix-up with Joey and Eileen. Willis backed off the divorce talk when Gwen threatened to stop working for Kirk. Paul arrived as Morgan tried to tell Joey there was something suspicious about Sally's story. Rachel was insulted when Frank implied she was one of the idle rich, then he ended the argument by kissing her roughly, shocking them both. Eileen was distressed by Rita and Joey's violent encounter, then Rita phoned the police she'd been assaulted. Jeff interrupted Pat comforting Brian to discuss the divorce. His head in great pain, Ted paid Sweet for his discretion. Frank was undeterred by Rachel's frosty air. Morgan was stunned and Sally dismayed when police came to arrest Joey.

JULY 26, 1979 (EP. #3822)
Charlie was confused when Fred called cookies "grocery cakes." Vivien told Rudy her father needed to be put in a home. Iris was annoyed at Vivien's reaction upon meeting Kirk's wife. Scott was bothered that Jeff was Rachel's lawyer. Ada was too late in asking Charlie not to tell Fred about the job at Rachel's. Rita glared at them as Morgan and Paul got Joey released from the station. While visiting Jim, Phil was impressed that Sally approved of Joey's arrest because it furthered her ends. There was a subtle subtext behind the pleasantries Iris and June exchanged. Eileen told Rita she was moving back to her apartment after Sally accused her of engineering Joey's arrest. Ada, Fred, Charlie, and Cory all stepped out shouting "surprise" when Linda and Clarice wheeled Larry through his front door. Pat comforted Brian and urged him to confide in Scott, who suggested talking to Albini. Kirk fumed when June made jabs about Iris and Vivien being the Beverly Hillbillies in Bay City. Fred jockeyed to keep up as Ada and Charlie left, then Clarice and Larry enjoyed a tender moment alone. Sally practically pushed Phil into Eileen's apartment.

JULY 27, 1979 (EP. #3823)
Mac had a little contretemps with Liz for allowing Jeff in his office but barring Janice. Brian told Michael that Pat can stay with Karen so he can meet with Albini. Rachel introduced Louise to Fred, their new gardener. Sylvie discouraged Dennis from joining the "rag trade," but said she'd see if Kirk had a position for him. Iris encouraged Dennis with Cecile. Turkel handed Jumbo a gun and ordered him to kill Mike, Ted, and Ben. Jamie interpreted Pat's notes for Frank. Mac could barely restrain his anger at Rachel for siccing Jeff on him. Rachel agreed to see Frank again after Janice passed them in the hallway. Karen scribbled a note for Pat and left with Ted, who promised to take her to Ben. Janice showed Mac a dummy book of the magazine. After making a date with Jamie, Cecile told Dennis he needed to undo the damage he did to Elena. Ted locked Karen in the stateroom, filled with all her favorite things. Iris was outraged to spy Dennis and Elena in each other's arms after Elena promised to help him get Cecile back. Iris viciously advised Elena to get out of Bay City and away from Dennis or she'd tell Cecile about her sordid history with men. Rachel and Frank kissed again in the tack room.

JULY 30, 1979 (EP. #3824)
Pat showed Michael Karen's note that didn't explain where she'd gone. At L'Auberge, Cecile reassured Jamie it was over with Dennis. Elena sobbed to Rachel that though she still loved Dennis, she intended to leave Bay City. Though Vivien wouldn't let her set foot in the suite, Blaine managed to give Iris pause for thought by saying it was in her best interest to help stop her divorce from Jamie so he wouldn't be able to come between a Cecile/Dennis reconciliation. Ted managed to calm Karen's hysterics and convince her they could safely spirit Ben away on the boat, then he stole the keys from her purse. Scott said he'd get the real tapes to Albini when Brian suggested to Michael and Pat they set a trap using phony tapes. Blaine's appearance scared Cecile off from her tour of Jamie's loft. Louise feared for the furniture when Mac let Amanda ride her tricycle in the living room. Iris was angry that Brian was turning to Pat and didn't even tell her Ted was in trouble. Elena discouraged Cecile from accompanying her to the villa in Ste. Maxime. Michael wondered at Karen's change in attitude when she was vague about her absence. Ted got his hands on the tapes hidden in Karen's apartment moments before Scott arrived.

JULY 31, 1979 (EP. #3825)
Ted walked in moments after Brian received a call from Jumbo. Charlie looked on distrustfully as Eileen agreed to join Phil's group at the campsite again. Willis promised Angie he'd do his best to divorce Gwen. Angie seethed when Gwen breezily opined Willis doesn't want a divorce, baby or no baby. Sylvie and Jim were apprehensive when Kirk informed them her dresses would now be manufactured in Hong Kong to save money. Elena said goodbye to Brian (who said he'd live in the main house) and despaired that he could marry a girl Cecile's age but that she never had a chance with Dennis. Brian was bewildered when Ted shook his head like a punch-drunk fighter and wandered toward the bedroom in a daze. Jamie vehemently objected when Dennis wanted his help with Cecile. Angie was chagrined to watch Willis hug Gwen because she came up with an idea for a party to drum up business. Phil encouraged Eileen to open up. Jim advised Sylvie on how to change Kirk's mind. Jamie suggested Cecile take some courses in art history. Brian was shocked when Ted talked of marrying Karen. Elena arranged with Douglas the temporary close of the gallery. Elena told Dennis her leaving would help him get Cecile back. Eileen stood up and shared her story with Phil and his friends.

Dennis: "Goodbye, Elena."
Elena: (Exit Line, Christina Pickles) "Goodbye. [HE HESITATES, THEN TAKES HER IN HIS ARMS]"
Dennis: "I'm going to miss you, too. [ELENA SMILES, TRYING TO CONTROL HER TEARS. COMMERCIAL]"

AUGUST 1, 1979 (EP. #3826)
Rita agreed to drop the charges when Eileen promised never to see Joey again. After walking in on a Janice/Liz shouting match, Mac warned Liz she'd be out of a job if she didn't act with more tact and courtesy. Jamie told Rachel he was excited for her to meet Cecile. Fred thanked Ada for making it possible for him to stay in Bay City, then rolled up his sleeves and helped her paint the kitchen. Pat admitted to Jim that Karen had family problems, then didn't sympathize with Liz's complaints against Janice. The judge swore in Rita and Joey, then Rita looked on in satisfaction and Sally in shock as he sentenced Joey to 30 days, but was outraged when he suspended the sentence. As they discussed the divorce settlement, Jeff casually asked Rachel about her holdings in Cory Publishers. Rachel told Liz she'd use the settlement to make sure Janice doesn't trick Mac. Annoyed at Charlie for not warning her Fred would come over, Ada ignored him and concentrated on painting with Fred. Fred looked on jealously when a competitive Charlie made noises about getting Ada new appliances at cost, then he dashed upstairs to paint Nancy's room. Jamie was annoyed when Blaine said he ought to be grateful about her slip in front of Cecile. Janice worried when Mac fumed about Rachel's insistence on triple the amount of child support. Larry told Charlie he wants a job where he can help people in trouble. Rita shook her finger at Joey and warned he'd end up in jail if he tried to see Eileen. Rachel and Frank kissed and descended toward the bed.

Rachel: "I never thought I'd hear you expressing anything but disapproval of my marriage to Mac."
Liz: "I didn't know how good you were for him until I saw Janice in operation."

Notes: Rachel owns outright six acres along the south side of the property.

AUGUST 2, 1979 (EP. #3827)
Iris arrived home to find June pumping Vivien for information. Ben phoned Karen to meet her at Hamilton Park. Angie suggested using Sylvie's big house to throw the party, but was bothered when Willis stuffed cash in her hand to buy a new dress. Rita disapproved of Eileen's apartment, pooh-poohed Joey's new criminal record, and told her Joey had been pawing that little vixen Sally in court. Kirk patted him on the back when Willis said Dennis could come work for him. Iris wondered what was up when an excited Karen came to see Ted about Ben. Charlie told Joey about the time Eileen's been spending with Phil. Kirk cooly informed Sylvie she had no say in the operating setup and refused to sell the company back to her. Willis didn't enthuse over Angie's baggy slacks, blousey blouse, and unstructured jacket, then whined Kirk was making him work through Jeff. Phil declined coffee as too stimulating, and Eileen gushed as he told Rita about how he encourages religious faith in his group. Jumbo lurked nearby as Karen and Ted told Ben he can find refuge on the Lady J, Ted's yacht. Iris was pleased that Kirk wanted to spend the night.

AUGUST 3, 1979 (EP. #3828)
Ted assured Karen they were safe aboard his boat waiting for Ben. Vivien was stunned to arrived back from the farm to find Iris and Kirk emerging from the bedroom in robes. Ada was worried that Ada was employing Jeff, then got dragged by Fred into settling a dispute with Louise. Sally retracted to Jim her feelings of guilt over Eileen and Joey's split. Iris was appalled but Kirk nonchalant when June stepped past Vivien to catch them having breakfast. Janice asked Scott to draw up a "no palimony" contract for her to sign. After Brian and Michael speculated on Karen's whereabouts, Iris came over and informed them she was on Ted's yacht. Jumbo spied through the porthole as Ben promised Karen he'd never gamble again. Janice signed the contract, then covered when Mac dropped by Scott's office. Jeff gave a list of insider holdings in Cory to Kirk. June began buying Cory shares when Kirk rejected her warnings to stay away from Iris. Rachel dismissed Louise so she could have dinner alone with Frank. Sally beat it when Phil told her he expected Eileen at the campsite. Phil kissed Eileen passionately and promised to show her how beautiful sex can be. Rachel was furious when Janice said the contract removes the last obstacle to her divorce. Karen and Ted watched through the door into the main room as Jumbo threatened Michael with a gun. Ted struggled to pull Karen away, but she ended up pushing him into the room, then a shot rang out.

Notes: The Sally/Phil scene had to be redone as, "Actor said 'Jesus Christ.'" A few episodes later, an actor said "Jesus" during a Joey/Phil scene.

AUGUST 6, 1979 (EP. #3829)
Shot by Jumbo, Ted reeled to the deck and fell backward over the railing into the water. Phil was thwarted when Eileen insisted on going home. Ben played the coward so Karen threw a bottle at Jumbo as he struggled with Michael over the gun. Finally, Ben whacked Jumbo unconscious with the fire extinguisher. Blaine encouraged Iris to help her find a weakness in Jamie's divorce case. Mac thwarted Janice's attempts to talk about the divorce. Cecile couldn't bring herself to kiss Jamie after their intimate dinner, then Brian came by to clear his moving into the main house. Puzzled that June was jealous of Iris despite their marital arrangement, Kirk suggested she find a lover of her own. Phil tried to convince Eileen that Joey turned to Sally because of what Eileen wouldn't give him. Karen was upset when the police speculated Ted was dead. Scott phoned Brian to meet him at the station. Kirk calmed Iris's doubts by hinting he might divorce June for her. Michael informed Brian that Ted is presumed dead. Phil forced himself on Eileen in her bed despite her cries and screams.

AUGUST 7, 1979 (EP. #3830)
Rachel agreed not to push for extra child support when Jeff told her the contract protects Mac's estate from Janice. Joey was confused when a numb Eileen informed him she wasn't angry with him anymore, but couldn't bear his touch as it reminded her of Phil. Larry glared at Fred for not being as optimistic and supportive as Clarice. Angie wondered why Sylvie wouldn't agree to co-host the party for Kirk. Joey told Rose and Paul of Eileen's strange behavior. Sally didn't mind at all that Phil had to push Eileen into losing her halo, but Phil was troubled by the sad look he'd seen in her eyes. Ada comforted Rachel over the divorce. Scott told Mac and Janice that June bought ten thousand shares. Clarice told Larry not to be short with Cory. Fred was embarrassed when Charlie caught him showing some square dancing steps to Ada. Angie advised Willis to talk to Sylvie. Rita defused Paul's concern by telling him everything he wanted to hear, then helped Eileen arrange her trip to Minneapolis. Joey quizzed Sally about Phil. Rachel showed Mac the contract as evidence that Janice did things behind his back.

AUGUST 8, 1979 (EP. #3831)
Charlie agreed to give Eileen time off. Phil played innocent when Joey demanded to know what he'd done to Eileen. Janice couldn't convince Mac she'd had only good intentions in drawing up the contract. After finding Iris with Kirk, Sylvie told her that June will never divorce him, not matter what he led Iris to believe. Jim invited Liz to the dinner he was giving when she was distressed over Janice. Pat visited Brian. Blaine told Clarice she regrets having ruined her chance with Jamie. Alice asked Clarice if she'd hire Sally at the coffee shop. Kirk's smile faded when Sylvie warned him to stay away from Iris. Fred was up to the challenge when Charlie informed him he was interested in Ada too. Charlie told Joey of Eileen's trip plans. Mac and Janice made up. Kirk convinced Iris he had no attachment to June. Liz was intrigued when Joey came over to talk to Morgan, who had accompanied Sally to Jim's for dinner. It caught Janice's attention when Brian told Mac that Judge Lancto wants to meet with him and Rachel in his chambers before granting their divorce.

AUGUST 9, 1979 (EP. #3832)
Janice quizzed Frank about his relationship with Rachel. Dennis detailed his work experience to Willis, who decided to start him out with office work. Gwen agreed to find out for Willis what was going on between Sylvie and Kirk. Ben promised Karen he wouldn't run away, but was wary of testifying. Blaine told her marriage woes to fellow waitress Annie. Cecile didn't enthuse over Dennis's new job and wanted him to go and put things right with Elena. Rachel was annoyed that Frank didn't share her assessment of Janice. Kirk promised to help Gwen with Willis if she didn't take Sylvie's side over his. Blaine feigned dizziness at convenient intervals while subtly prompting Jamie to contribute a form of alimony to help pay Larry's bills. Karen and Brian hugged after convincing each other that neither was to blame for Ted's death. Gwen informed Willis and Angie it was nothing serious between Sylvie and Kirk, then gave him a blank check to help with his party expenses. Jamie thwarted Blaine's attempts to rekindle their romance. Rachel admitted she was attracted to Frank, but couldn't claim any emotional attachment.

AUGUST 10, 1979 (EP. #3833)
Brooks and Jeff both noticed Rachel's reluctance to go to the courthouse. Sylvie told Mac her reasons for distrusting Kirk for both business and personal reasons. Morgan and Joey left after Rita gloated to them that Eileen was safely away from them now, then she convinced Eileen to take the next bus to her parents. Kirk had to stop beating about the bush when Mac showed him the telexes of June's stock purchases, but Mac refused to relinquish control of his company by selling out to Kirk. Brian told Iris and Dennis that Ted was dead. Rita wouldn't let Paul talk Eileen out of going. Rachel admired Ada's new appliances. Kirk exploded at June and slapped her for ruining the groundwork for his acquirement of Cory. Iris encouraged Vivien to keep trying to hear what the argument next door was about. On the bus, Eileen befriended Judy, a young runaway who ended up stealing her purse with money and bus ticket. Morgan tried to soothe Joey's fears. Jamie offered Rachel moral support. Janice resisted Iris's efforts to befriend her. In the Chicago terminal, Eileen found comfort with Ethel, a member of TRIP, a traveler's aid organization that helps people in need. Ethel then phoned Teddybear that they'd hit paydirt. While being questioned by Lancto about the possibility of a reconciliation, Rachel sadly fantasized about marrying Mac.

AUGUST 13, 1979 (EP. #3834)
Lancto granted Mac and Rachel's divorce. Ethel brought Eileen to Teddybear's (Theodore Baer) apartment under the pretext it was an office. Iris accused June of being a nouveau riche parvenu when she told Iris she'd created Kirk, whom she'd met as a penniless waiter. Rose discouraged Joey from running after Eileen. Teddybear and Ethel encouraged Eileen to stay overnight. Frank tried to comfort Rachel. Brian told Mac and Janice how Ted died. Iris feigned shock when Vivien tried to discuss her relationship with Kirk. Jeff advised June to let Kirk dally with Iris as it made it less likely he would find out about their own affair. Mac assured Janice he was all over Rachel. Paul told Rose about his new apartment and how Rita wouldn't let him touch her when, five years into the marriage, she'd discovered she was barren. Teddy listened in as Eileen phoned her parents to say she was staying over in Chicago with friends. Rachel offered to let Frank stay in the room above the stables when he said he'd checked out of his hotel. Kirk tried to do damage control with Iris since June informed her she and Kirk were totally enmeshed with the business.

Notes: "Thunder picked up on mikes" probably refers to a storm outside the studio.

Notes: Starting with this episode, there in a brief "epilogue" following the last act (Act IX, which is immediately followed by the announcement, "Stay tuned for the conclusion of Another World").

AUGUST 14, 1979 (EP. #3835)
Since the Ogden property wasn't available, Willis gushed to Angie about signing a contract to buy four acres on the Bay. Alice agreed to stop pressuring Sally to see a counselor if she takes Clarice's job offer. Memories of Ted prevented Karen from making wedding plans with Michael. Cecile said she's enrolled in art classes, and Jamie was jealous to hear Dennis had spoken to her recently. Angie helped settle Dennis into the office, then looked on with misgivings as Willis tried to hide his irritation when Jeff asserted his authority by listing the changes he requires on the Wireco project. Teddy complained to Ethel that Eileen kept yelling and pounding on the door. Jim was proud when Sally was forthright with Clarice about her shoplifting. Brian disapproved of Jamie's desire to pay Blaine alimony as it would delay the divorce. Ben insisted it was still too dangerous for him to testify, then Karen revealed she feels guilty as it she who accidentally shoved Ted into the stateroom where he got shot. Both having been arrested, Blaine and Sally realized they have a lot in common. Gwen eventually forgave Willis for using her blank check to make a down payment on the bayfront property. After they joined Mac and Janice for dinner, Jamie focused all his attention on Cecile to their amusement. Ben succumbed to his gambling urge. Fred complained about Rachel's uppity maid, then Larry surprised Clarice by standing up and kissing the back of her neck. Angie was angry to learn Willis had shown the site to Gwen before her.

Jamie: "[HE SEES MAC IN THE DOORWAY] Mac, come in. [JAMIE RISES] There's someone here I want you to meet. Cecile, this is Mac Cory. Mac I'd like you to meet Cecile de Poulignac. [CECILE AND MAC SHAKE HANDS]"
Cecile: "How do you do, Mr. Cory?"
Mac: "May I call you Cecile?"
Cecile: "[SMILES] Of course."
Mac: "[SMILES BACK] Good. And please call me Mac."

AUGUST 15, 1979 (EP. #3836)
Joey was worried when Morgan reported that Eileen phoned her parents to say she was staying with friends in Chicago since she had none there [guess they forgot about Marianne]. Ethel and Teddy decided to ply a terrified Eileen with alcohol. Ada plied Rachel with questions about Frank. Iris encouraged Liz to stay on at the complex when Liz speculated she'll have more time to devote to friends like Iris if she quits. Paul decided to find out when Eileen left Bay City as Morgan told a happy Sally that Eileen was missing. Scott advised Sylvie not to try breaking her contract with Kirk. Rachel laughed when June apologized and advised her to warn her friend Iris away from Kirk. Iris invited Kirk to crash one of Mac's publication parties with her when he told her shareholders like herself will profit if his conglomerate acquires Cory. Angie was pleased that Rose decided not to harp on her and Willis's different views on material possessions. Brooks phoned Rachel he can't pick Amanda up from Mac's due to car trouble. Liz, Sylvie, Jim, Scott, Iris, Kirk, Vivien, and Rudy arrived at Mac's party, where Mac officially turned down Kirk's offer. The john was turned off by Eileen's tears, and was noncommital when she begged him to phone her brother. Kirk agreed to a gentleman's agreement not to go directly to the board of directors. Iris was annoyed that Vivien chatted with Liz instead of working. Rachel was crushed when Iris lied that Mac and Janice were throwing a party to celebrate the divorce.

AUGUST 16, 1979 (EP. #3837)
Kirk ordered Jeff to find dirt on Janice they could use against Mac. Blaine told Sally to try her first-time waitressing on Cecile, but then held her back when Dennis came in. Dennis introduced Cecile and Sally. Blaine befriended Dennis to convince him Cecile was wrong for Jamie. Though concerned, Rita shifted the blame for Eileen's disappearance onto the evil Perrini family; Paul didn't notice when she mentioned knowing she was barren before she married him. Kirk warned Sylvie she'll face extremely distasteful counter-measures if she undermines him with Mac. Louise rushed off to check on the roses Fred pruned so Ada could finally crush his hopes for a romance (especially after he called her a solidly built woman). Sally was full of helpful ideas on how Blaine could win back her cousin Jamie: See a gynecologist about her irregularity, then get Jamie smashed and become pregnant by him. Cecile and Jamie joked about the galleys he was working on, but she turned away when he got too close. Paul told Rose about Rita's slip of the tongue. Ada said she'd talk to some of Gil's old police pals when Larry mentioned his interest in joining the force. Jamie remarked to Dennis how they were each working in the other's family business, then was furious Dennis accused him of being about to hurt Cecile with Blaine. Jeff instructed Horace Murdoch to uncover Janice's secrets. Blaine was stunned when Dr. Hammond told her she was over two months pregnant.

Rita: "No one is to blame, but I'm more so than most."

Notes: "Connie stopped tape" during the Ada/Fred scene.

AUGUST 17, 1979 (EP. #3838)
Frank became upset when Rachel tried to introduce him to Amanda. Liz gave Mac the phone number of the stable apartment as Frank's number. Eileen promised to cooperate if Ethel didn't make her get drunk again. Iris was bothered when Rachel wouldn't talk to her about Kirk. Michael didn't share Karen's fear that Ben had a gambling relapse. Joey and Morgan tried to recreate Eileen's route. Mac coerced Frank's residency out of Brooks. Ben managed to allay Michael's suspicions after asking him for a loan until he lands a job. Jeff got Rachel to tell her about Janice's affair with Robert while he was married to Lenore. Rita was indignant when Joey came to her for help. Eileen convinced Teddy she was sick from drinking, but he began to beat her after catching her trying to escape through a smashed window. Brian told Iris about Ted's obsession with Karen. The john phoned Morgan but wouldn't say much. Karen screamed, horrified, when the elevator she was waiting for opened to reveal Ted, who stared at her somewhat quizzically before casually pressing the button to close the door. Frank walked in on Mac cross-examining Rachel about her hypocritical affair.

AUGUST 20, 1979 (EP. #3839)
Karen began to question her sanity when she pressed the button to open the elevator again and Ted was gone. Morgan told Rose about the call from Chicago and said not to worry Joey about it. Rachel discouraged Frank from finding another place to stay. Teddy raged at Ethel for being soft with Eileen, but she begged him not to sell Eileen to the vicious Johnny Flowers in Cicero. Michael thought Karen had hallucinated, and she agreed it was impossible for Ted to have disappeared from the elevator so quickly. Liz accused Pat of refusing to face the fact that a dreadful and tragic change has taken place in Mac. Morgan told an impatient Joey to wait before retracing Eileen's route. Ada informed Mac he was getting a taste of his own medicine. Teddy informed a bound Eileen she'd be leaving tomorrow as he sold her to another pimp. Liz was insulted when Pat implied she'll have less time to meddle if she doesn't resign. Rose tried to instill some faith in Joey. Morgan told Paul that the caller implied Eileen was a hooker.

AUGUST 21, 1979 (EP. #3840)
The john phoned back to tell Morgan that Eileen was at 143 West Lakeview Rd. Kirk ordered Jeff to uncover the truth of Sylvie's pregnancy. Angie was bothered to find Willis and Gwen happily exchanging ideas for the party. Larry promised he'd be careful when Clarice worried about the dangers of police work; Blaine told them she had to cut back on work. Teddy gave them a black look when Ethel said she'd help Eileen, who cried out in pain. Willis and Angie disagreed about whether Gwen should help with the party. Rudy was surprised to find June in a robe when he delivered lunch to Jeff, and June warned Jeff not to be so eager for Kirk to learn of their affair. Kirk easily convinced Iris he's always cared more about Sylvie's welfare than about profit and loss figures. Joey took off when Rose and Paul revealed Morgan had gone to Chicago. Jamie laid into Blaine for telling Dennis they were on friendly terms again. Morgan showed up and tried to convince Teddy he was interested in a young and pretty girl. Jeff amused himself by thrilling Iris with the news that Kirk certainly prefers her to June. Morgan's exasperation mounted when Teddy chased Eileen out of the room.

Notes: "Ray didn't hold note high enough" when Joey saw Morgan in the first scene.

Notes: "Actor fumferred [sic]" ......... your guess is as good as mine....

AUGUST 22, 1979 (EP. #3841)
Teddy told Morgan that Eileen would be ready in an hour. Frank flashbacked to an Oriental girl of the same age as he held Amanda. Liz announced she was quitting after Mac welcomed Janice back from a successful presentation in New York. Though Karen felt ready to return to work, Michael told Scott it was too early because of her recent hallucination. A repelled Mac told Liz not to bother about the two-week notice when she claimed it was Pat's ability that gave Janice's fatuous idea a professional glow. A relieved Eileen went into Morgan's arms after convincing Ethel and Teddy she would do what they wanted. Frank admitted to Rachel he'd been affected by a piece he did on a Vietnamese orphanage; then Jamie learned of their arrangement. Michael didn't see Ted when Karen spied him smiling at her from the maitre d's station. Eileen pretended to be unconscious, then Morgan knocked Teddy out with a lamp when he went to check on her. Morgan then grabbed Teddy's knife to force Ethel to escort them out of the building. Janice and Pat told Mac and Brian about New York, then Mac complained to Brian about Frank. Jamie told Rachel it was time she met Cecile. Liz was outraged when Jim suggested she apologize to Mac. Karen nightmared that Ted showed her the gaping bullet hole near his heart. Joey reunited with Eileen in Morgan's hotel room, though Eileen kept him in the dark about what she had been through.

AUGUST 23, 1979 (EP. #3842)
Blaine made Clarice promise not to tell anyone she was carrying Jamie's baby. Rose unhappily agreed Angie can bring Willis for dinner. Vivien left for the farm (her mother had a heart attack) after Rudy told her of Jeff and June. Gwen agreed to June's request not to invite Iris to the party. Iris dragged Dennis away from a meeting with Willis and Kirk to say she can help him with Cecile. Ada introduced Larry to Det. Bob Brent (who had arrested Joey), who said the three-month police academy starts in a couple weeks. Sally advised Blaine it would be best if someone besides Blaine told Jamie she was pregnant. Iris convinced Liz to go on her cruise without her, but grimaced when Liz chattered on about what they'd do together once she got back. Sylvie was interested when Gwen said June obviously wants to remain married to Kirk. Iris spoke ill of Blaine to try to scare Cecile off Jamie. Blaine told Clarice she would get an abortion to prevent Jamie any heartache. Rose stared him down when Willis complimented her kitchen and described the house he was building. Iris was irritated when Gwen told Kirk the party was for both him and June. Outraged when Jamie and Dennis shook hands and decided to let the best man win, Cecile threw them both out.

Pat: "You tried to keep her [Janice] out of Mac's office."
Liz: "You'd probably accuse me of being rude to a cobra."
Pat: "It's hardly the same thing."
Liz: "It would be if I tried to keep it out of Mac's office."
Pat: "Janice is not going to poison Mac."

AUGUST 24, 1979 (EP. #3843)
Rachel flew off the handle when Brian tried to lecture her about Frank. Rita welcomed home Eileen, who forbade Morgan from telling Joey why she'd been kidnaped. Blaine made sure Clarice heard her on the phone to the clinic. Cecile accepted Jamie's apology with mock grandeur then kissed him tenderly. Sylvie felt sure it was personal reasons that Kirk was delaying the construction of her branch office. Morgan phoned for Joey to come over as soon as Rita was out the door. Frank reluctantly agreed to contribute a article on Vietnamese children when Janice told Mac the first issue would be devoted to children as it was The Year of the Child. Jamie and Cecile convinced Rachel to go riding with them, but then Clarice arrived to tell Jamie, then Rachel, of Blaine's pregnancy. Jeff told Kirk they have two months to get their hands on Cory's cash reserves to save Plateau Copper or Laverty Brothers is finished; Murdoch revealed Janice had an affair with her boss, Howard Battis (of Battis and Shriner, and an acquaintance of Kirk), and benefited modestly when he died a couple years ago. Eileen came clean with Joey about everything that happened in Chicago, but refused to tell him what had made her run away from Bay City. At the Chicago abortion clinic, Blaine stalled as the nurse tried to initiate her into the process. Kirk convinced Iris she'll feel more secure about Sylvie if she learns about her family. Mac was sympathetic when an upset Rachel told him about Blaine. Blaine started working herself up emotionally when she saw Jamie arriving.

'CORY LIVING ROOM, RACHEL IS STANDING IN THE TERRACE DOORS LOOKING OUT WHEN JAMIE AND CECILE ENTER.'
Jamie: "Mom? [RACHEL TURNS]"
Rachel: "Hello, Jamie."
Jamie: "Thanks for letting us come over like this."
Rachel: "I needed to take a break anyway."
Cecile: "Then we're not taking you away from your work?"
Rachel: "Not at all."
Jamie: "Mom, I'd like you to meet Cecile de Poulignac. Cecile, this is my mother, Rachel Cory."
Rachel: "It's nice to finally meet you, Cecile."
Cecile: "It's nice to meet you."

Notes: "Actor looked at prompter" during the Blaine/Clarice scene.

AUGUST 27, 1979 (EP. #3844)
Blaine put up an impressive front for Jamie's benefit. Eileen couldn't tell Morgan why she can't work things out with Joey. Michael told Scott about Karen's second sighting of Ted. Karen found that her engagement ring (which she keeps in a drawer) was engraved with: "K.C. and T.B. August 3, 1979." June bribed Rudy into keeping mum about what he saw. Blaine was insulted when Jamie insisted on checking with her doctor to make sure the baby was three months old and therefore his. Rita walked in as Eileen became very emotional when Morgan asked if Phil was to blame for her change. Larry was upset to overhear Clarice admit Blaine's abortion plans to Mac and Rachel. Michael was understanding when Karen took out the ring and saw it no longer had the engraving. Rita convinced Eileen to sublet her apartment and move back in with her. Rudy took Vivien into his arms when she told him her mother died the other day. Mac and Rachel agreed to celebrate Amanda's birthday, but she was annoyed when he referred to her as "Mandy." Blaine let Jamie browbeat her into returning home. A sullen Larry accused Clarice of keeping secrets. Janice told Mac she'd like to give him a child when he told her of Jamie's troubles.

AUGUST 28, 1979 (EP. #3845)
Larry told Blaine he knew she was pregnant. Jamie went to Brian to see if he had legal recourse. Angie and Willis argued about finances but kissed and made up before he left for New York. Larry wasn't much use when Rachel managed to rip Blaine's story to pieces. Iris waited on Vivien, who insisted she had to return home to run the farm. Kirk told Jeff that Iris controls the most important block of stock after Mac. Sally admired Blaine's tactics, then Blaine told Dennis he'll have clear sailing with Cecile soon. Kirk gave Willis an advance to help his house money troubles. Iris was stung when Gwen told her it was Sylvie's stipulation not to invite Iris to the party. Rachel tried again to make Frank comfortable with Amanda. Jamie told Blaine the baby was more important to him than Cecile, and offered to postpone the divorce so the baby can have his name. Liz pestered Pat about why she brought Brian to her bon voyage party; Iris showed up with Kirk and was surprised to see Brian there. Jamie didn't believe Rachel's opinion that Blaine manipulated Clarice. Brian put his arm around Pat and they gazed into each other's eyes.

Sally: "Boy, you go all out, don't you?"
Blaine: "Wouldn't you?"
Sally: "You bet. [BEAT] Of course, you didn't have the abortion. [BLAINE SMILES]"

AUGUST 29, 1979 (EP. #3846)
Janice decided to name the magazine Brava. Joey told Rose of his hilltop vows with Eileen. Rita agreed to Paul's request they meet with Father Brewer. Ben agreed to help Albini as long as he doesn't have to appear in open court, then feigned reluctance when Brian pressed birthday money for Karen into his hand. Joey told Rose he'd be looking for a better-paying job. Mac insisted to Janice it wasn't for personal reasons he no longer wanted Frank to contribute an article. Morgan informed Joey that Eileen's moved back to Rita's and that her troubles started with Phil. Crestfallen that divorce didn't lead to excommunication, Rita still argued against it, but Paul pressed Brewer on valid reasons for an annulment. Sally was disappointed when Morgan told her Eileen was back in town. Eileen nightmared that Joey left her (in a red wedding dress) at the altar after Phil, the minister, told him they'd slept together. Michael laid into Ben for hitting Brian up, then Karen decided it would help her to visit her parents alone in Florida. Frank told Janice he was unsatisfied with his article. Paul told Rose he can get his marriage annulled if he can prove Rita concealed her barrenness from him before they were married. Sally smiled maliciously while informing Eileen she knew about her and Phil. Joey demanded answers from Phil.

'JANICE OFFICE, MORNING. JANICE IS BEHIND HER DESK, AND PAT IS SITTING OPPOSITE HER, READING SOMETHING ON A SHEET OF PAPER.'
Janice: "What do you think, Pat? [PAT HANDS HER THE SLIP OF PAPER]"
Pat: "I think Brava is the best name for the magazine anybody has come up with so far."
Janice: "You prefer it to Woman's World or any of the other names here? [PAT NODS] It sounds more contemporary, doesn't it?"
Pat: "Brava also has all the right connotations. It's a term of approbation meaning "fine", and it's the feminine form of "bravo". It's perfect, Janice."

AUGUST 30, 1979 (EP. #3847)
Joey's manhandling didn't get the truth from Phil. Murdoch gave Kirk forged Cory financial documents, revealed they can pay Sylvie's sister, Myrtle Benson from Oneonta, New York, for info, and promised to come up with something more damaging on Janice than an affair. Mac advised Jamie to fill Cecile in. Not wanting to be in Eileen's face, Joey turned down Charlie's offer to work in the furniture store. Vivien dashed Rudy's plans to join her on the farm by saying she secretly hates farms. Iris disbelieved Sylvie's claims of prevarication and cruelty in Kirk. Blaine beamed at Dennis when he came in to see Cecile, who was chatting with friends. Angie told Joey he had the build to be a heavy-equipment operator for Frame Enterprises. Sylvie was alarmed when Myrtle phoned to say a man had been asking questions about her. Jamie walked in as Dennis was declaring his love to Cecile. Ada gave Charlie the gimlet eye when he gave her a pin and said he'd try to fill Fred's void. Cecile fought to control her emotions when Jamie told her of Blaine's pregnancy. Iris told Vivien she'd help her sell the farm and protect the money from fortune-hunting Rudy. Kirk was wrathful when June stormed in to drop hints about Plateau while he was showing Iris the forged figures indicating Cory was in trouble. Vivien and Iris badgered Rudy into agreeing to confront the Laverty's.

Notes: Phil said "Jesus" again when Joey shoved him to the ground.

Notes: "Called 'cut' by mistake" early on in the Cecile/Jamie scene.

AUGUST 31, 1979 (EP. #3848)
Kirk convinced Iris that Cory was near bankruptcy. Rachel invited Frank to Amanda's party. Sally was thrilled to learn Eileen's apartment was available after convincing Blaine they should share a place together. Karen wouldn't allow Michael to accompany her to Florida, but happily let him put the ring on her finger. Iris realized she let too much slip when she told Mac it was Kirk's board that was insisting on the takeover. Blaine introduced herself to Rita and inquired about the apartment. Karen told Ben she was leaving for the airport early after finding a pennant with "Lady J" on it. Frank ran out when Rachel, Louise, Ada, Nancy, and Charlie began singing "Happy Birthday" to Amanda. Iris greeted June with ersatz warmth, then warned she'll tell Kirk about Jeff if June continues interfering with her and Kirk. Jim agreed Sally was old enough she told Alice she was moving in with Blaine. June said she realizes a friendship with Iris is in their best interests as Jeff and Kirk prepared to send out proxy statements to Cory stockholders. Amanda opened her presents, then Mac came and threw a snide remark Frank's way. Karen was stunned to come across Ted as she explored the yacht.

SEPTEMBER 3, 1979 (EP. #3849)
Ted fired up the engines after Karen fainted. Frank pressed Rachel on her feelings for him and Mac. Rita admitted she'd considered joining the convent when she discovered she couldn't give him children, and was floored when Paul pointed out married women can't become nuns. June warned Jeff that no one will survive unscathed if Laverty Brothers goes down in flames. Ted was mum when Karen wondered how he'd pulled off the impossible tricks of late. Louise worried about Rachel's dizzy spell, then Rachel considered a return to the McMasters Art Colony. Rita was furious at Paul's accusations, and he couldn't forgive her for having given him false hope. Ada and Charlie told Rose about Amanda's party, then he kissed Ada gently and said she could always turn to him. Jeff fumed about Rudy when June told him Iris is blackmailing her. Karen played friendly, so Ted told her the bullet hit the medal he used to wear around his neck, and that he'd decided to stay dead when he saw Michael holding her on the deck. Rose wasn't crazy about the idea of Joey working for Willis; Paul told her he'd be talking to Dr. Bartley about Rita. Rachel agreed Frank could join her later at the colony. An outraged Ted accused Karen of betrayal after finding her trying to use the ship-to-shore phone.

Notes: "Wild-track - audio (someone coughed)" during the Rachel/Louise scene.

SEPTEMBER 4, 1979 (EP. #3850)
Sally and Blaine settled in and looked forward to the good times in their new place. Brian was suspicious of Kirk when Iris asked him about Mac's financial troubles. Rose worried about the dangers when Angie told Joey that Willis approved the construction job for him. Mac approved of the title Brava and the block lettering for the cover. After Joey stopped in, Eileen begged Charlie to tell him she couldn't see him; Joey was interested when Charlie asked him to make a delivery to Boston. Gwen informed Angie that Willis will tire of her penny-pinching ways. Mac and Brian realized Kirk was out to get Cory, and wondered which side Iris would choose. Sally realized time was of the essence when Joey said he was going to check out Serenity House in Boston. Kirk convinced Iris that Mac and Brian were hiding the facts from her. Jim came by the office so Angie could ask him to look over Willis's personal finances. After Alice let Phil in, Sally threatened to tell Joey about him and Eileen if he didn't help her get Eileen to leave town before Joey's return from Boston. Brian filled Pat in on Kirk and Iris. Sally spooked Eileen by showing her Phil. Kirk and Mac drew battle lines.

SEPTEMBER 5, 1979 (EP. #3851)
Karen woke up to an elegant breakfast as, out on the deck, Ted clutched his head in agony. Jamie didn't play along when Blaine pretended intense interest in his editorial duties. To prevent a packed Vivien from leaving for the farm forever, Iris said they'd get Jeff to discover who the farm legally belongs to. Fred blushed as he told Larry and Clarice about the lonely widow in Oklahoma he met through a singles magazine. Clarice was subdued when Larry beamed he'd been accepted into the academy. Jeff and Kirk hustled Vivien out when Murdoch came by to tell them Howard died of a heart attack in the co-op apartment he'd bought for Janice. Sylvie dismissed Rose when crass Myrtle arrived interested in renewing ties after twenty-five years. Ted told Karen he won't fix the engine until she returns his romantic overtures. Iris picked up on Cecile's discomfort when she mentioned Blaine will stop at nothing to prevent her divorce. Kirk blew up at Jeff after Sylvie informed him Myrtle was in Bay City. Rudy told a worried Vivien that Iris was just using a ploy to keep her from quitting. Blaine fiercely rejected Clarice's advice to accept she may not get Jamie back. Karen was alarmed to learn Ted had wired the boat with dynamite. Iris explained they have a common interest in whom Jamie ends up with, then was stunned when Blaine revealed her condition. Jeff and Kirk confronted Myrtle in her hotel room, and she promised to play it their way as long as she gets revenge on Sylvie.

SEPTEMBER 6, 1979 (EP. #3852)
Sally made Blaine go over and chat with Eileen about furniture, then went over and announced they were roommates in Eileen's old place. Brooks informed Frank that Rachel wanted him to join her at the colony when he finished his article. Dr. Bartley told Paul that Rita had never seen him about infertility. While Angie was put out at their meeting, Gwen made June realize they're allies as they both have straying husbands whom they helped create. Blaine visited Ada to reveal her pregnancy and demand she help make it accepted. Eileen told Morgan that Sally was out to get her. Frank recognized someone in the recent photo of Saigon Pat showed him. Paul accused Rita of constantly changing her story. Sally and Blaine showed their apartment to Alice and Jim, then Morgan arrived to disbelieve Sally's claims of noncalculation. Ada came to Charlie for moral support. Sally came to the campsite to give Phil his new orders. Photographer Harvey Gossage told Frank the photo was of boat people. Rita harangued Rose about putting Paul up to concocting lies. Gwen overheard Jim tell Angie that Willis couldn't afford to build the Bay house. Carmela urged Rita to confess her lies to Paul. Eileen fled into the night, terrified, when Sally brought Phil and his followers to her house and led them in chanting, "Phil wants you, Eileen."

Sally: "Well, look, Alice, thanks for coming by."
Alice: "Can't I stay and help with anything."
Sally: "No, thanks, Alice."
Alice: "I could scrub the sink, if you'd like."
Jim: "Let's go, Alice."

Notes: Rita's middle name is Acacia.

SEPTEMBER 7, 1979 (EP. #3853)
Rachel and Brooks wondered at Frank's disappearance. Janice suggested Willis when Mac needed to fill a vacancy on his board. Kirk left so Iris could explain his tender offer to Dennis and tell him of Blaine's pregnancy. Ted dissembled when Karen noticed his headaches. Michael dragged Scott out of his meeting to let him know he hasn't heard from Karen in over a week. A more tolerant Rachel questioned Janice about Frank. Iris found Brian pumping Vivien for information about her and Kirk; Iris couldn't answer when Brian begged her not to turn against Mac. Michael was there when Ben got a call from his father saying Karen never showed up. Karen played along when Ted presented her with the engraved engagement ring, but considered swimming out to a buoy. Since Janice spurned his greeting, Kirk lashed out by mentioning Howard. Jamie regretted saying Dennis would use Blaine's pregnancy to try to win Cecile back. Janice told Mac that Rachel was genuinely worried by Frank's absence. Rachel told Ada she hopes she hasn't scared Frank away. Ted panicked to awaken to the splash of Karen jumping off the deck. As they stargazed, Kirk told Iris he wants to marry her.

SEPTEMBER 10, 1979 (EP. #3854)
Iris told Kirk he'd have to wait for an answer to his proposal until they see how June reacts to it. Sally told Phil that it looks like they succeeded in running Eileen off. Ted called hoarsely as he searched the waters for Karen. Rose tried to instill some faith in Eileen, who stayed with her last night. Michael shared his suspicions with Pat and Brian that Ted was alive and had Karen. Ted struggled to bring Karen's limp body aboard then performed CPR. Iris assured Kirk she wasn't jealous of Brian and Pat; Sylvie laughed when Kirk told her of his divorce and marriage plans. Rose warned Paul that even with evidence for an annulment, the ecclesiastical courts might rule against him. If the takeover fails, Jeff announced to June he'd nominate himself to take over Laverty, with her backing; June admitted she loves Kirk more than him. Sally told Eileen she'd get Phil's group to tell Joey that Eileen threw herself at Phil. Michael told Brian that Karen reacted to Ted's death the way Marianne did to John's. Ted waxed eloquent over Karen's sleeping form. Iris told Vivien they'll soon be jetting around the world with Kirk. June and Kirk embraced after she agreed to let Iris think he was divorcing her.

SEPTEMBER 11, 1979 (EP. #3855)
Pat told Rachel about Frank's reaction to the photo. Paul hopefully asked Carmela when Rita was aware of her barrenness. Mac found it impossible to believe when Brian felt Iris would side with Kirk. Kirk's check for $10,000 wasn't enough to get Myrtle talking. After Rita initially protested her innocence, Paul rather easily got her to admit she'd known all along they couldn't have children; Paul forgave her, but insisted their marriage was over. Frank blew up at Rachel for making inquiries into his personal life. Sylvie didn't accept Gwen's offer to help, then Myrtle offered to let herself be outbid into not talking. Kirk told Murdoch he'd gauge Sylvie's reaction to determine if Myrtle's info is worth the price she's demanding. Scott told Mac and Brian that Albini is leaving for Washington to head a new presidential crime commission and will appoint Scott as acting D.A.; Brian agreed his firm can handle Cory's legal affairs when Scott leaves. Frank kept mum when Rachel encouraged him to open up. Gwen was surprised to hear of the takeover, but assured Mac that if he made Willis a board member, Willis wouldn't let Kirk influence him. Sylvie downed a stiff drink after Kirk dropped hints about her past. Mac told Janice he's decided to offer Willis the seat. Brooks interrupted with proxy materials from Kirk as Frank was telling Rachel he loved her.

Notes: Scene not taped -- Rita telling Carmela she wants to live near the convent.

SEPTEMBER 12, 1979 (EP. #3856)
Frank didn't sympathize with Rachel's concern for Mac. Karen despaired when Ted nodded sympathetically without taking her words seriously when she insisted she was ill. Morgan told Joey that Eileen feels targeted by Sally. Ted presented Karen with a white dress but wouldn't believe she really had pneumonia. Michael and Brian decided to check out Karen's sightings of Ted. Sally feigned innocence when Joey said he learned the police have Serenity House on their list of con artist groups. Rachel's words of encouragement meant a great deal to Mac. Eileen wouldn't confirm Joey's suspicions that Phil did a number on her. Brian marveled when Michael examined the elevator and found a second door behind some padding. Janice quizzed Frank about Rachel before revealing she'd seen Rachel closeted with Mac in his office. Eileen asked Morgan not to talk to Joey about her anymore. Blaine was unconvinced when Sally felt it was a good time to let Joey know of Phil's seduction of Eileen. With great patience, Ted made Karen recite her wedding vows, but she fantasized she was saying them to Michael. Sally promised Phil she wouldn't tell Joey about him and Eileen, then stole a t-shirt of his. Rachel defended her concern for Mac to Frank.

SEPTEMBER 13, 1979 (EP. #3857)
Ted insisted he was going to quench all her fires when Karen made him feel her forehead. Ben retracted his doubts after Michael found the "Lady J" pennant under Karen's bed. Gwen found it difficult to concentrate on what Dennis was telling her, as Angie decided it wasn't the right time to tell Willis about Jim's work. Cecile tried to convince Dennis that she and Jamie are bound to become closer in spite of Blaine, then offered to speak to Iris about the take-over. A slightly tipsy and maudlin Sylvie tried to warn Iris that Kirk would destroy them both. Angie fumed when Gwen gave Willis a peck on the cheek as congratulations on Mac's appointment. Blaine eluded Vivien's grasp to try to recruit Iris, then agreed to duck out of sight when Cecile arrived. Blaine re-entered after working herself into an emotional state and dismayed Cecile with her tears over Jamie. After Brian and Michael worked on him, Captain Sweet admitted Ted took the yacht into the bay. Angie worried to Willis that she can't compete with Gwen's attempts to buy her way back into his life. Cecile questioned Iris about why Blaine was so openly vulnerable with her. Rudy told Vivien his lawyer learned the farm has an inheritance tax of $40,000 which she can pay off only by selling it. Iris murmured thanks to Blaine after managing to scare off Cecile. After arriving by powerboat, Michael found Ted fiddling with an explosive device. Michael slugged Ted unconscious after a headache made Ted drop the detonator, then Brian arrived. Cecile broke off their relationship when Jamie verified Blaine's claim that he'd promised her emotional support. Karen clung to Michael after Brian disarmed the explosives.

Brian: "Ted? Ted? [TED'S EYES OPEN] Ted, it's me."
Ted: "Dad..."
Brian: "What happened to you?"
Ted: "I don't know."
Brian: "Are you all right?"
Ted: (Exit Line, Richard Backus) "No, I don't think I am."
...
Brian: "Of course. You stay with her, Mike. I'll get the yacht back to shore.[CUT TO STATEROOM, AS BRIAN TAKES A LOOK AT TED, BEFORE TURNING HIS ATTENTION TO THE YACHT CONTROLS. GO OUT ON TED, LOOKING OFF INTO SPACE CATATONICALLY. COMMERCIAL]"

SEPTEMBER 14, 1979 (EP. #3858)
Joey told Eileen he wouldn't stop trying to figure out what drove her away. Sally wished she had similar success when Blaine told her of her instant hysterics for Cecile's benefit. Kirk discouraged Iris from attending the party with him, then changed his mind after hinting at Sylvie's personal crises. A tipsy Sylvie told Mac that Kirk proposed to Iris. Willis's disappointment made Angie cave in and agree to go the party. Kirk ordered Jeff to initiate divorce proceedings after disinviting June to the party to "keep up the charade." Mac told Willis to give his board offer serious consideration before replying. Sally phoned Joey to say she'd found something important at Eileen's apartment. Myrtle spilled the beans after Kirk threatened her with an unfortunate accident. Iris admitted she was confused, but wouldn't let Mac criticize Kirk. Angie went to check on Sylvie when Jim said she won't be in attendance, so Gwen took the opportunity to tell Willis of Angie using Jim to check his finances. Blaine was puzzled when Sally was disappointed that Joey took the news by storming out to confront Phil. Alice made an appearance at the party. Gwen enjoyed pointing it out to Iris when June made a grand entrance. Willis warned Angie they'd have a little talk later. Kirk failed to chase June off, but managed to scare a wan Sylvie away from Iris by threatening to introduce Iris to Myrtle, who arrived per his instructions. Joey's punch sent Phil flying after Phil admitted sleeping with Eileen, then, despite Phil's protestations of nonviolence, Joey began beating him within an inch of his life.

SEPTEMBER 17, 1979 (EP. #3859)
Kirk leveled Sylvie by revealing he knows she was convicted of manslaughter, gave birth to Iris in a prison hospital, and was forced to give her up for adoption. Frank talked to Rachel about a book by Malcolm Lowry, then convinced her to come back to his room. Myrtle denied, then admitted telling Kirk, and blamed it on Sylvie being Mama's favorite, but Sylvie wouldn't agree to make up with her. Kirk convinced Iris that Sylvie had lit out because of a drinking problem. Kirk glowered at Myrtle when he couldn't throw her out. At the hospital, Brian said Ted was undergoing neurological tests, and Pat tried to reassure him that Karen wouldn't press charges. Jeff was furious when June spurned his kisses and his plans for them with her incessant talk of Kirk. Rachel pulled away when Frank kissed her. Brooks and Louise panicked when Mac came home with Amanda and wanted to know where Rachel was. Alice told Jim she's been offered the opportunity to run an experimental nursing program at Parkway Memorial Hospital in Chicago. Linda came to say Karen had woken up as Pat argued with Michael over his desire to see Ted behind bars. Kirk dragged Myrtle, emboldened by liquor, away from Iris. Janice realized Mac's concern for Amanda was really jealousy over Rachel and Frank. Rachel declined to spend the night with Frank. An upset Karen made Michael promise to tell the police that Ted couldn't help himself. Kirk told Sylvie to give him and Iris her blessing or he'd make sure she lost Iris again. Jim listened through the door as Sylvie swore to kill Kirk if he hurt Iris.

SEPTEMBER 18, 1979 (EP. #3860)
A battered Phil told his followers he was mugged. Cecile chatted with Clarice while waiting for Blaine. Jamie didn't share Rachel's opinion that Blaine implied to Cecile that Jamie has strong feelings for her. Blaine smiled skeptically at Cecile's belief that Jamie wants a divorce, then revealed Jamie insisted she have their baby. Willis let Angie know he thought her actions reprehensible and admitted he wants success and everything it implies. Phil told Brenda to get Sally after she brought him to Linda at the hospital. Clarice worried when Blaine vowed not to let Jamie ride off into the sunset with Cecile or anyone else. Rachel invited Frank to the party to celebrate Larry's acceptance into the academy. After Gwen needled her about being able to give Willis everything he needs, Angie revealed her decision to give Willis the most supportive home life she can. Phil turned cold and warned Sally he was going to even the score. Angie apologized to Willis and said she was taking a leave of absence to make a good home for him. Ada, Charlie, Clarice, Larry, Nancy, and Cory arrived for the party, then Fred joined and showed Ada a photo of his pen pal Amelia Dudley. Jamie glared after finding Dennis lending a vulnerable Cecile his shoulder. Frank told Rachel he's not ready to talk about why children affect him deeply.

SEPTEMBER 19, 1979 (EP. #3861)
Sad since they had great affection for each other, Sylvie told Rose she was moving her operation back to New York. Joey wouldn't accept her help when Sally came to relay Phil's threat to have him arrested. Joey's anger flared when Sally raised the possibility that Eileen had been a willing participant. Rita drew herself up sharply and refused Eileen's sympathy. Jim told Liz about the takeover, then Rose stopped by to tell him of Sylvie's decision. A bitter Rita announced to Paul and Eileen that she was leaving town and moving into an apartment near the convent. Morgan was unhappy when Joey told him of Eileen and Phil. Jim came to ask Iris to accompany him to Sylvie's, and dropped hints about Sylvie's argument with Kirk. Phil instructed Brenda to tell the police she'd heard Joey threaten Phil's life. After Sylvie chased Iris away, Jim tried his best to convince her not to leave town. Rose looked at Paul with a mixture of hope and fear when he told her he was in the process of annulling his marriage, then she went into his arms and vowed not to let anything hold her back anymore. Sylvie laughed ruefully then raucously when Iris called Kirk Sylvie's greatest defender; then Iris begged to be allowed to help her. Eileen broke down and admitted how dirty she feels after Joey said it doesn't matter if she slept with Phil. Joey left when Rita came home and threatened to phone the police.

Jim: "Every time the doorbell rang, I'd immediately think it was you, and then I'd remember you were away."
Liz: "[NOT SURE HOW TO TAKE THIS] Were you relieved when it wasn't me?"
Jim: "No. I felt lonely and let-down. Liz, I have a lot of fun with you, though you might not know it from the way I act."
Liz: "Oh, Jim.."
Jim: "And I missed you very much. [HE SQUEEZES HER HAND, AND SHE SMILES AT HIM]"

Notes: "Actors complained that there was noise on the floor" in the Rose/Paul scene.

SEPTEMBER 20, 1979 (EP. #3862)
Frank pressed Rachel to let him take Amanda to the zoo. Janice disapproved when Willis told Mac he was too worried about getting between him and Kirk to accept the board offer. Michael gave Karen a new ring and they decided to marry as soon as she's released. Larry put on a happy front but really wasn't sure it was the right time when Clarice said she'd like to have another child. Brooks told Mac that Gallery 285 won't be reopening. Mac accused Frank of wanting to replace him after Frank came back from the zoo with Amanda. Brian warned Jamie that the adultery charges will be invalid if the divorce is postponed. After making Brian promise not to tell Mac of her involvement, Rachel said she might be able to sway stockholder Winfield Eberhart to their side. D.A. Scott told them the case was closed since Ted was declared insane and institutionalized, then Michael and Karen announced to him and Pat their marriage plans. Gwen looked sympathetically at a helpless Willis when Jeff informed him he was putting the firm's accounting directly into Laverty hands. Charlie told Clarice he wanted to find his own place to better romance Ada. Liz offered her support to Mac, who was genuinely glad to see her. Mac complained to Jamie about Frank. Michael agreed to have the wedding in Florida, where Karen's parents have decided to move, and let her father perform the ceremony. Michael encouraged Ben to confess his addiction to his parents after he admitted to Karen he'd resumed gambling. Clarice wondered when Larry wanted to discourage Charlie from moving out. Kirk dismissed Willis's concerns of handing the bookkeeping over and advised him to accept the seat on the Cory board. Mac rebuked Rachel for allowing Amanda to be alone with her soldier-of-fortune boyfriend.

Notes: Rachel's sculpture, "Rare bird."

SEPTEMBER 21, 1979 (EP. #3863)
Rachel prevented Mac and Frank from coming to blows. Joey filled Paul in on his troubles but made him promise not to tell Rose. Frank thought it revealing that Rachel went to pieces whenever Mac got upset. Eileen insisted Rita no longer meddle with her and Joey. A miserable Iris told Kirk she couldn't bear to marry him without Sylvie's blessing. Blaine advised a distressed Sally to win Joey by convincing Phil not to have Joey arrested. Phil and Brenda told the police that Joey had tried to kill him. Brian tried to defuse Mac's anger, then was stunned to hear of Kirk's proposal to Iris. Frank told Rachel that a little Vietnamese girl he loved very much was taken by the enemy due to his carelessness. Vivien was more interested in Liz's vacation photos than Iris. Sally overheard as Phil told Eileen it was too late as he'd already signed out a warrant for Joey's arrest. Janice suggested to Mac they get married to forestall any suggestion of impropriety among the conservative stockholders. Iris recoiled in horror when Kirk introduced her to Myrtle, who revealed Sylvie was convicted for killing the man who raped her. Iris fell apart on learning she'd been born in prison, and took comfort in Kirk's arms. Frank said Eliot had introduced him to Simone, a government secretary, and they'd had a daughter, Su-Lin. Simone disappeared during the Tet offensive and Su-Lin was captured by the VietCong. Det. Brent knocked on the door as Joey wavered about whether to accept Sally's offer to hide him.

SEPTEMBER 24 and 25, 1979 (EPS. #3864 and 3865)
Sylvie left for New York. Joey and Eileen reunited after she admitted Phil forced himself on her, and she made him promise to turn himself over to the police. Rachel convinced stockholder Edgar Conklin to stay loyal to Mac. Willis hit Kirk when Kirk blackmailed him into helping him win the takeover or he'd spill some damaging info about Janice's New York affair. Jeff brought June to Kirk's lodge in the Adirondacks, where she retrieved his gun. Then June hid her presence when Kirk brought Iris and Vivien. Linda told Alice she'd seen an agitated Sally at the hospital. Sally was crushed when Joey said he'll never stop loving Eileen. Ben moved to Florida with Michael and Karen, who decided to get married.

SEPTEMBER 26, 1979 (EP. #3866)
Caretaker Dobbs informed June after Kirk told him he was returning to town on business. Gwen was incredulous when Willis told her Kirk is blackmailing him. Vivien didn't share Iris's enthusiasm over the lodge. Kirk beat down Iris's doubts to get her to write Mac a note relinquishing her proxy to Kirk. Sally admitted to Alice she's loved Joey all along, then encouraged her to take the job in Chicago. Mac was shocked when Rose and Jim told him Sylvie had left. Vivien beat Iris at backgammon. Janice was aghast when Willis told her of Kirk's innuendos, then convinced him that Mac would be more hurt to learn of her affair with Howard, whom she admitted not loving. Alice summoned Pat, Jim, Liz, and Sally to Pat's apartment to tell them of her decision to leave; Pat shared that Michael and Karen were married that afternoon. Mac and Brian speculated on Sylvie's departure then learned from Rudy that Kirk had spirited Iris away. Jim questioned Liz about Herb, the attractive widower she befriended on her South American cruise. Alice admitted to Pat that though she was fond of Scott, she didn't fell their relationship was leading anywhere, and that her relationships with Ray and Dan were unsatisfactory because of her feelings for Steve. After Sally remembered her mother leaving her in a motel room for three days while she and her father went out of town on a job, she impulsively stole Liz's brooch. Despite his suspicions that Janice wasn't telling him everything, Willis told Mac he'd sit on the board. Liz was sad to notice her brooch was missing. Iris was shocked when June materialized, produced a revolver, and aimed it at her (though June claimed she didn't need it as Kirk would destroy Iris himself).

Pat: "But Steve is dead. You have to accept that, Alice."
Alice: "I've never been able to. Deep down I have the feeling he's alive. Maybe that's because I dream about him, and he's always alive in my dreams."
Pat: "You never told me this."
Alice: "I've never told anybody before."

Alice: (Exit Line, Wesley Ann Pfenning) "I'll call you, at least. (SHE KISSES PAT) Thanks again, Pat."

Notes: Liz's husband Will originally written as "Bill."

SEPTEMBER 27, 1979 (EP. #3867)
Joey vowed to Eileen he'd plead guilty so she wouldn't have to testify. Eileen warned Rita she'd run away with Joey if she ratted him out. Kirk was outraged when Mac crumpled Iris's note and told him Iris's request would have to be done in person. Phil yelled at attorney Ed Brookman to get out, then told Paul that Joey would never allow his seduction of Eileen to come out in court. Larry assured Clarice that now that he knows he'll be making a good salary, he's excited about having a baby. Eileen laid into Rita for driving her into Phil's arms with her moral judgements. Janice was relieved when Mac told her Kirk discussed only Iris with him. Willis vowed to get even when Kirk forced him to agree to get his hands on Mac's list of loyal stockholders. Joey was upset that Eileen considered going public about what Phil did to her. Mac wondered at Janice's insecurity. Joey and Eileen arrived just as Charlie and Ada were gazing into each other's eyes with the intent to kiss. When Fred and Cory's early return home spoiled Clarice and Larry's romantic evening, Larry blew up at his father. Gwen clung to a vulnerable Willis and assured him he was doing the right thing. Rose fussed over him and Eileen clung to him as Brent read Joey his rights.

Rita: "I can't remember meeting a more sincere and devout young man than Phil Higley."
...
Eileen: "You poisoned everyone around you with your hatred."
Rita: (Exit Line) "Joey has your soul now. You're his. [SHE PICKS UP HER SUITCASE AND GOES TO THE DOOR, WHERE SHE STOPS TO OPEN IT, AND TURNS BACK TO EILEEN] I did everything that can humanly be done, and I failed. I don't want anything more to do with you or Paul or Morgan. Ever. [SHE CLOSES THE DOOR BEHIND HER. EILEEN, SUDDENLY EMOTIONALLY EXHAUSTED, TURNS AWAY AS JOEY LOOKS OUT FROM THE KITCHEN]"

SEPTEMBER 28, 1979 (EP. #3868)
Mac was concerned when Janice awoke from a nightmare in which a dead Howard tried to drag her into his arms. Kirk was pleased with Murdoch's fake issue of the Journal indicating Cory was in deep trouble. Vivien speculated that an anxious Iris just imagined seeing June. Cecile was upset when Brian said Jamie might lose his job if the takeover succeeds. Paul told Joey they can't afford the $50,000 bail, and warned the felony charges will be hard to beat without dragging Eileen into it. Brian told Pat his feelings for Iris don't subtract from his feelings for her, then they, Janice, Mac, and Scott congratulated Willis on his impending nomination. Only an uneasy Janice observed Willis slip Scott's list of stockholders into his pocket. Kirk was incredulous when a furious Iris told him June had been there waving a pistol at her. Kirk showed Iris the bogus newspaper to convince her to accompany him to the meeting. Despite Jeff's urging, June was reluctant to cut Kirk loose, then Willis arrived to hand over the list. Joey refused to tell Scott how Phil provoked him. In the Cory auditorium, everyone wished Mac well, then they found their seats. Joey advised Sally to get professional help when she insisted she did everything she did out of love for him, then Eileen arrived to join in pitying Sally. Janice made a speech about Brava, Willis reluctantly seconded Jeff's stalling motion, then Kirk lead Iris down the aisle to a pair of vacant seats.

OCTOBER 1, 1979 (EP. #3869)
Kirk ran interference as Brian tried to talk sense into Iris. Mac initiated the voting. Rose told Paul she'd wait before finding a new job, then a teary Eileen arrived to tell them Joey was being arraigned. Blaine tied to talk Sally into throwing a party and inviting Jamie, saying she was inspired by Sally's drugging of Joey. Jeff phoned June that the voting was underway. Eileen sought comfort in Morgan's arms and vowed to testify if need be. Iris was mortified when Brian required her to step up to the podium and confirm her vote. Mac was thrilled when Edgar stood up and voted for him. Jeff and Kirk fumed when Mac announced their tender offer was rejected by a plurality of 10,252 shares votes. Family, friends, and employees all celebrated. Mac wouldn't let Willis explain why he'd seconded Jeff's motion. Iris returned home and demanded Vivien fill her with drink. Blaine happily agreed when Jim asked her to talk Sally into meeting people. Morgan and Eileen dashed out when Rose was agitated at not having any Parmesan cheese, then she cried in Paul's arms about Joey. Cecile sighed to Jamie about how much she had loved Dennis. Brian sadly realized that Iris was completely under Kirk's sway. Mac was delighted when Edgar told him Rachel had sung his and Brava's praises. Brian told Mac it was imperative he speak to Iris. Kirk arrived as Iris was about to tell Mac about the newspaper article.

OCTOBER 2, 1979 (EP. #3870)
Mac was happy to wake up to Janice's mimosa, but was still upset Iris and Willis had failed the acid test. Gwen thought it unfair Willis had to sacrifice himself to save Janice. Brian convinced Jamie that it will allow Blaine to contest the divorce if he waits until after the baby is born to divorce her. Charlie told Clarice and Larry that he found a place to live near the furniture store, then he asked Larry where he bought Clarice's engagement ring. Janice insisted she'd die if she lost Mac when Willis became extremely agitated at what keeping her secret was doing to him. Ada told Clarice that Nancy had a fun time playing with Cory. Blaine fainted after failing to impress Ada with her baby-book reading. Mac agreed with Brian that Iris needed their support, but insisted he's cut her out of his life. Janice was aghast when Gwen warned she better set things right between Willis and Mac or else. Ada told Jamie of Blaine's fainting spell. Fred said he'd move to Oklahoma when Larry admitted he still felt like a kid when he was around. Ada agreed to go dancing with Charlie despite disengaging when he tried to dance with her in the kitchen. Jamie expressed concern for Blaine and said they'd talk about the divorce another time. Gwen told Mac that Janice knew how Kirk had blackmailed Willis.

OCTOBER 3, 1979 (EP. #3871)
Rachel was happy Jamie intended to divorce Blaine right away. Scott visited Joey in county prison to tell him stories of state prison. Janice claimed complete puzzlement when Mac brought up Gwen's statement, then was thwarted when he said he didn't have time for a trip to San Francisco. Willis shouted to Gwen that he won't betray Janice to salvage a business relationship. Blaine became angry and indignant when she realized Jamie's offer to pay her a formal alimony was a prelude to a formal divorce. After arriving to find Ada dancing to her radio, Rachel boasted about having helped fight the takeover and revealed she won a delayed grant to build a sculpture on Cory complex grounds. Though he bore her no grudge, Morgan didn't believe Sally had any interest in him unrelated to Joey. Sally was torn when Scott told her they needed cause for Joey's attack on Phil. Angie tried to get Willis to tell her why he sided against Mac. Mac asked Pat for advice on confronting Rachel. Blaine screamed at Jamie for wanting to desert her and began throwing things against the wall in a rage. Scott tried to coax Eileen into helping him help Joey. Rachel was modest when Mac expressed his gratitude, then he insisted she commemorate their victory by accepting the state's commission.

OCTOBER 4, 1979 (EP. #3872)
June tried to be optimistic when Kirk panicked that their stock was going through the floor; she showed him the letter she was writing on her typewriter hoping to re-establish ties with her rich parents. Blaine accused Jamie of only worrying about her for the baby's sake. Pat and Jim told Liz that Russ was returning for a visit. Kirk held out his arms in a somewhat studied fashion and Iris went into them. With feigned reluctance, Kirk agreed to accept a loan after convincing Iris he spent a lot of money trying to protect Mac's interests. Blaine ordered Sally to use her ingenuity to keep Jamie from bringing Cecile to the party. Jeff was angry that June wouldn't bail on Kirk. Kirk blamed Jeff for failing to keep track of Conklin, but Jeff accused him of asinine management. Kirk got a further shock when Jeff rubbed it in that he and June are lovers, and that Iris knew it. Sally came to invite Dennis to the party while he was on the phone with Cecile, then Jim showed up and asked Sally if she knew anything about Liz's brooch. Jeff banged out a letter of resignation on the typewriter. June began loading her gun after Jeff told her Kirk knows. Kirk gave Iris his insurance policies as collateral, crossing out June's name and substituting Iris's, then got Iris to verify June's affair. Jamie presented Cecile with a copy of the first book he edited, Hyperactivity in Cage Birds, then they kissed after he said Blaine has agreed to a divorce. Liz watched Jim's reaction slyly as she told him Herb might be paying her a visit. Kirk slapped her when June said his ignorance made her affair more exciting. June pulled a gun and vowed to kill them both when he refused to leave Iris and return to her.

Pat: "I can't get over how well you look since your vacation."
Liz: "Why, thank you, Patsy."

OCTOBER 5, 1979 (EP. #3873)
Kirk easily disarmed June when she couldn't bring herself to shoot him, then didn't voice any objection when she contemplated suicide. Rachel told Frank about the commission. Janice just felt it was evidence of Rachel's obsession over the inheritance when Mac told her of Rachel's takeover help. Mitch Blake tried to contact Janice. Eileen frightened Phil by saying she'd not only testify against him, she'd find other girls to testify as well, then Linda told her he was feigning the extent of his injuries. Janice bullied her way past Brooks and laid into Rachel for her sneaky tactics. Phil sweated when Scott warned he can investigate his group. Jeff unloaded the gun and tried to soothe a despondent June. Since she'd seen Frank at the house, Janice said she wouldn't mind Rachel working at the complex if Mac went to see her now to convey her apologies. Kirk convinced Iris that her loan would enable him to cut himself off from June financially. Eileen confessed to Rose that Phil seduced her. Kirk announced he was resigning when June said she'd get the best divorce lawyer to destroy him. Joey became desperate when Eileen visited and announced her intention to testify if need be. Janice said she had a bigger goal when Mitch phoned to complain she wasn't fighting for Howard's money. Mac was appalled to overhear Rachel tell Frank that Amanda would be very happy to have a playmate (Su-Lin).

'ACT ONE B. CUT TO THELMA, LIMBO SWITCHBOARD, AS SHE ANSWERS A CALLER THROUGH HER HEADSET.'
Thelma: "Good afternoon, Cory Publishers."
Mitch: (Intro Line) "[TWO-WAY, LIMBO] Janice Frame, please."
Thelma: "I'm sorry, Miss Frame's not in her office at the moment."
Mitch: "When do you expect her back?"
Thelma: "She didn't give me that info."

Notes: This marked the first appearance of Thelma, referred to as the switchboard operator almost since the inception of Cory Publishers Bay City office.

OCTOBER 8, 1979 (EP. #3874)
Janice failed to dissuade Mitch from coming to Bay City. Angie questioned Willis about his recent lack of affection toward her. Ada was surprised when Charlie picked her up for their date at her front door. Mac was in agony imagining Rachel and Frank in bed. Rachel admitted she wasn't prepared to change her life when Frank spoke of what might happen should the State Department find his daughter. Mac hotly disagreed with Louise's assertion that Frank wasn't more than a friend to Rachel. Janice didn't volunteer much despite Angie's promise to uncover what she was up to with Willis. Brooks and Louise fretted over the inevitable Mac/Rachel clash. At the Lake club, Ada and Charlie danced to Glen Miller. Mac unleashed his anger at Rachel, but that only made her refuse to answer his questions about Frank. Angie was glad when Willis told her he'd love to get out from under Kirk's thumb. Charlie popped the question, but Ada had to decline on vague grounds. Janice offered to have Mac's children when he revealed overhearing Rachel's plans to have kids with Frank. Rachel woke up in tears after dreaming of being in Mac's arms.

Notes: The department store is mentioned (here and in late September) as "Carlton's." The twelve-year run of Bryant's being the show's store seems to have ended.

Notes: The Rachel/Frank fantasy love scene marks the first time two people were actually seen in bed in the midst of having sex.

OCTOBER 9, 1979 (EP. #3875)
Janice kissed Mac and stroked his ego when he awoke in a blue funk. Dennis couldn't talk Iris out of going away with Kirk. June threatened to have the company investigated since Kirk dumped all his stock. Eileen said she'd do it alone if Sally didn't agree to come with her to tell the D.A. about Phil. Janice was thrilled when Mac agreed to a trip to San Francisco. Kirk promised Iris that they had smooth sailing from now on. Angie convinced a reluctant Rose to let Willis put up the money for Joey's bail. On a prison tour, Larry visited Joey to reaffirm their friendship. June offered Murdoch a bribe for a copy of the fake paper Kirk used to snow Iris. Sally and a couple girls arrived to join in as Eileen was giving a deposition to Scott. Janice told Mitch she would be away if he came to town. June enjoyed telling Iris that Kirk has been using her. Rose visited Joey to try to convince him there was no shame in Eileen testifying. After Sally's visit, Phil realized it was time to get out of Dodge. Mac and Janice left for the airport. In the Silver Spoon Discotheque in New York, Mitch told playmate Lydia he was headed to Bay City.

Sally: "We want you to be in perfect health."
Phil: (Exit Line) "Why?"
Sally: "Unless you drop the charges against Joey, you'll probably find yourself in a neighboring cell. [SHE SMILES AND EXITS. PHIL HESITATES FOR A BEAT, OBVIOUSLY FRIGHTENED, THEN GETS OUT OF BED AND TAKES HIS CLOTHES FROM THE CLOSET. HE STARTS TO PUT THEM ON]"

OCTOBER 10, 1979 (EP. #3876)
Rachel informed Frank that she didn't love him and that she would try to get back Mac, whom she still loved. Willis had to break it to Angie that not only did he not have the money for Joey's bail, but that the IRS put a lien on all his assets for some dealings he did with Laverty, under investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission. Blaine watched calculatingly as Dennis asked Sally about the brooch Jim had questioned her about. Ada was overcome when Rachel admitted divorcing Mac was the worst mistake of her life. Distraught that Frame Enterprises was wiped out because of Kirk, Willis admitted Gwen knew him better than Angie did; they kissed passionately after she reminded him of all of Angie's manipulation to get him. Charlie realized the real problem was Ada wasn't "thinking young" when she opined it was her love for Gil that was keeping her from remarrying. Sally phoned Jamie while he was at Cecile's to invite him to the party but not to bring Cecile on account of Blaine's presence. Rachel was upset when Pat told her of Mac's sudden trip. Willis listened from the bedroom in his robe as Angie tore into Gwen about leading Willis astray with Kirk. Blaine flared up when Jamie said he'd take her permission to bring Cecile to the party. Ada agreed to marry him after Charlie brought some kites into the kitchen then spoke of roller-skating. Gwen was supportive when Willis wanted to wait for a better time to break the news to Angie. Rachel wanted to throw an engagement party when Ada and Charlie told her their news.

Sally: "I just hope he [Joey] forgives me someday for all the things I did to take him away from Eileen."
Blaine: "That's ancient history now, Sally."
Sally: "I hope so."

Charlie: "[HE TAKES THE RING OUT OF HIS POCKET AND TAKES ADA'S HAND. HE'S ABOUT TO SLIP THE RING ON HER FINGER WHEN HE STOPS]"
Ada: "What is it, Charlie? You having second thought?"
Charlie: "Of course not."
Ada: "Then what's the matter?"
Charlie: "I forgot something. [HE HESITATES, SHYLY]"
Ada: "What?"
Charlie: "I love you. I really do, you know. [ADA SMILES AT HIM]"
Ada: "Yeah, I know, and the same goes for me. [Charlie PUTS THE RING ON HER FINGER, THEN SHE GOES INTO HIS ARMS, BLINKING TEARS FROM HER EYES AS HE DRAW HER TO HIM] I really do, Charlie. I really do. [Charlie SMILES HAPPILY]"

OCTOBER 11, 1979 (EP. #3877)
Eileen met Rose and Paul at the hearing and told them of the statements made against Phil. Then Angie, Scott, Brookman, and Joey arrived. Judge Wallace disallowed Scott from dismissing the case (as Phil had disappeared), since Joey had just pled guilty, then he called a recess to review in private the depositions Scott handed him. Sally handed over her supply of grain alcohol to Blaine as she's given up on Joey. After Wallace dismissed the charges against Joey, Eileen rushed into Joey's arms, and Rose, Paul, and Angie hugged each other jubilantly. Jeff was frustrated that June still thought highly of Kirk despite having sicced the SEC on him. Kirk was appreciative but mystified when Jeff put on a friendly face and vowed to defend him to the end. Liz told Jim he should be delighted to let Herb stay over at his house, then they were both surprised when Russ walked through the door. Intimidated by Willis's anger and intensity, Kirk admitted Frame Enterprises will be liquidated to pay Laverty debts. June walked in as Willis was throttling Kirk. Jim told Russ that Liz has been changing, after Liz insisted her badmouthing of Janice didn't extend to Sharlene; Sally arrived and greeted Russ. Murdoch handed over the phony materials after June promised not to show them to the SEC. Willis blew up at Angie for harping on Gwen when his business was in the toilet. Eileen and Joey happily snuggled on Rose's sofa. Russ told Jim that he convinced his boss, Dr. Cook, to set up an advanced cardiac care center in Bay City, funded by a wealthy Dallas patient who wanted others to benefit also. As they spoke, Sally tried to return the brooch to Liz's purse, but ran out when Liz caught her. On their hilltop, Joey and Eileen pledged their love again. Kirk slapped June around for ratting him out to the SEC. Sally entered Alice's house (the furniture covered and the drapes drawn), touched familiar objects fondly, then curled up in a semi-fetal position on the sofa and cried to Alice's picture about having left her. Angie was horrified when Willis stalked out raving about killing Kirk.

Jim: "[ANSWERING THE DOOR] Russ!"
Russ: (Intro Line, David Bailey) "How are you, Dad?"
Jim: "It's wonderful to see you, son. [THEY EMBRACE]"
Liz: "[CALLS] Who is that, Jim?"
Jim: "[CALLS] Come see."
Russ: "I got here early, I'm afraid."

Russ: "No business appointments?"
Jim: "I don't do that much accounting any more."
Russ: "You appear to be keeping pretty active, though."
Jim: "Oh, sure, and keeping track of my relatives is part of that."

OCTOBER 12, 15, and 16, 1979: Pre-empted for the World Series Games.

OCTOBER 17, 1979 (EP. #3878)
Iris mouthed Kirk's brainwashing when Brian tried to convince her Kirk had used her. Kirk drew Iris into his arms while Brian vowed not to hand her a divorce. After joyously returning to their hotel room, Janice had to turn down Mac's jade necklace as it would just make her look like his mistress. After Blaine and Clarice wondered at Sally's absence, Blaine poured some grain alcohol into a small pitcher. Dennis arrived and was troubled by Sally's absence. Cecile told Jamie she wouldn't attend the party. Stunned to hear Rachel decry her divorce, Jeff let it slip about Janice's "man in New York," whom Rachel begged him to investigate. June enjoyed showing Iris the fake documents Kirk used to con her. At the party, Blaine plied Jamie with spiked drink, became sullen when he introduced her to Morgan, then was so shocked that Cecile showed up that she went and gulped down Jamie's drink. Dennis found a despondent Sally at Alice's. Kirk denied everything when Iris laid into him. Iris screamed when he struggled to keep her from leaving, while blaming her for making him act so rough. Vivien and Rudy arrived as Iris threatened to kill Kirk. Pat disagreed with Rachel's fear that Janice intended to marry Mac. Kirk dropped Jeff off at the airport so he could defend him in New York. Mac proposed to Janice while she was taking a bubble bath. Larry and Clarice reprimanded Blaine for badmouthing Cecile and for drinking too much. Blaine dropped the punch bowl she was carrying and sagged to the floor, apparently unconscious. Kirk was shot as he composed a letter to Iris on the typewriter. After the shooter left, Kirk managed to type a few letters on the IBM selectric.

Iris: "I won't yell at you, Vivien. I never yell at you. I may raise my voice, but I don't yell. [VIVIEN CASTS HER EYES HEAVENWARD]"

Jamie: "How are things in the fixit world?"
Morgan: "Breaking down, as usual

Sally: "Why doesn't anybody I love ever stay with me when I need them most?"

Larry: "Don't you like Cecile?"
Blaine: "What's to like?"
Clarice: "She seems real sweet to me."

Kirk: "[HE TYPES AGAIN, AS WE SEE THE DOOR TO THE SUITE SLOWLY START TO OPEN. GO TO CAMERA POV OF THE DOOR CLOSING QUIETLY, THEN CUT TO KIRK, SHAKING HIS HEAD, AS HE PAUSES] That's not right. [HE THINKS] But when two people are as much in love as-- [HE BREAKS OFF AS HE BECOMES AWARE OF ANOTHER PRESENCE IN THE ROOM AND LOOKS UP. CUT TO A GUN FIRING, THEN CUT BACK TO KIRK, SLUMPING OVER THE TYPEWRITER.]

OCTOBER 18, 1979 (EP. #3879)
Kirk looked up, surprised, then lurched to one side, as if being pushed by the intruder, then sprawled on the floor, dead. Angie defended Willis's values to Rose, but admitted Willis was drinking heavily the last she saw of him. Iris forbade Vivien from ever mentioning Kirk's name again, and claimed not to remember threatening Kirk's life. Rudy shouted in fright when he found Kirk's body, throwing his flowers for Vivien into the air. Clarice and Larry revived Blaine. Cecile went to Morgan's side when Blaine called for Jamie to help her to bed. Larry apologized when Jamie took Cecile home. Dennis got Sally to tell him about her real parents: her father's mysterious job involved meeting shady men in nightclubs. Sally watched him wonderingly as Dennis sighed and said he too feels lonely. Cecile wondered to Jamie if Blaine were faking. Scott questioned Rudy about finding Kirk's body. Lt. Marlowe said all that was left in the typewriter was a scrap of paper. June was numb when Scott broke the news to her. Jamie resigned himself to staying with Blaine until Sally comes home. Sally thought Dennis sounded like Dr. Shearer when he opined she stole to get attention. Brian broke the news to Iris after comforting Vivien and Rudy. Angie was alarmed when a drunk Willis staggered in with blood on his shirt. Brian noticed when Iris assumed Kirk had been shot. Scott had to subdue June, who ranted at Iris, who'd walked into the suite somnabulistically.

Scott: "And I'll tell you, Kirk Laverty made a lot of enemies during the take-over attempt."
Marlowe: "Men like Laverty always have enemies... the question is: who'd do something like this to him? [MARLOWE AND SCOTT LOOK OVER AT THE BODY AS WE GO OUT]"

Notes: "Fly entered shot" during the Scott/June scene.

OCTOBER 19, 1979 (EP. #3880)
After snooping in Janice's office, Rachel realized she and Mac must be in San Francisco. A skeptical Cecile stormed out when Jamie insisted he fell asleep at Blaine's awaiting Sally. Rachel met Mitch when he came looking for Janice at the complex. Dr. Graham tended to Iris after Scott questioned her. Fred left to meet the widow Dudley. Jeff was up front with Scott about his affair with June. Rachel left a message at their hotel, but Mac and Janice were already about to be married.

OCTOBER 22, 1979 (EP. #3881)
As she married Mac, Janice had a daydream in which Mitch begged her not to desert him. Rachel told Ada about her funny feeling. Gwen was shocked when Willis said Kirk got what he deserved for besmirching Steve's name. Willis made excuses when Gwen found his bloody shirt. Rose told Joey not to bother polishing up his resume as it looked like Willis wouldn't have work for him, then he assured Eileen he would find work. Rachel and Frank made amends after he told her he was moving out. Judge Gardner Merritt and Geraldine toasted Mac and Janice. Willis told Gwen of his earlier blow-up with Kirk, then Gwen advised him to stay on Angie's good side so she can vouch for his whereabouts the night of the murder. Joey hugged Angie supportively when she confided Willis's business woes. Ada nixed Charlie's idea to sell her house and move in with him. Eileen asked Charlie if Joey could have his job back. Mac and Janice exchanged gifts after she erased Rachel's message. Gwen informed Angie she better have the right answers if the police question her about Willis. Joey didn't enthuse over Eileen's talk with Charlie, and Eileen revealed she wants to take some law courses since Scott and Brookman fascinated her. Rachel nightmared that Janice, in a wedding gown, swooped down and beckoned to Amanda. Rachel phoned Mac and informed him of Kirk's murder.

Merritt: "MacKenzie, wilt thou take this woman to be thy wedded wife?"
Mac: "I will. [MERRITT TURNS TO JANICE, WHO IS MOMENTARILY CONFUSED WHEN SHE HEARS HER NAME]
Merritt: "Janice, wilt thou have this man to be thy wedded husband?"
Janice: "I will. [MERRITT GIVES THE RING TO MAC AND HE SLIPS IT ON JANICE'S FINGER]"
Merritt: "Repeat after me -- With this ring, I thee wed."
Mac: "With this ring, I thee wed. [JANICE SLIPS ANOTHER RING ON MAC'S FINGER]
Janice: "With this ring, I thee wed. [MERRITT NODS, SMILING]"
Merritt: "I now pronounce you man and wife. [MAC TAKES JANICE IN HIS ARMS AND KISSES HER, HAPPILY. CUT...]"

Notes: A Judge Merritt married Mac and Janice. In 1975, a Judge Merrill married Mac and Rachel.

OCTOBER 23, 1979 (EP. #3882)
Dennis left when he couldn't get through to Iris, then Brian urged her to take control of herself the way she did to other people. Willis told Scott he'd never had more than some minor spats with Kirk. Larry showed Clarice the letter from Fred in which he urged them to name their baby after him, if it's a boy, then she told him today was a good time for her to conceive. Russ told Pat of Kevin Cook's plans to use the new wing already being constructed at the hospital, and she remembered when he set up his own experimental cardiology unit years ago. Iris told Scott of her encounter with June at the lodge, then denied telling Brian of a fierce struggle with Kirk. Clarice agreed when Dennis commented that Larry was looking pretty dangerous these days. Dennis agreed to help Sally face Liz. Iris decided to visit Millie Marberry in St. Tropez when Vivien awoke her from a nightmare in which she shot Kirk after he and June insisted she'd lost her mind. Jim protested Liz's discussion of Sylvie and Kirk, but admitted hearing Sylvie threaten Kirk. Dennis went to wait in the car while Sally admitted to Jim and a distant Liz why she'd been stealing, but then Liz gave Sally the brooch since it had reminded her of her mother. Brian realized there was more than a concern for Iris when he smelled alcohol on Sylvie's breath. Willis pulled Gwen into the bedroom when she urged him to go tell Scott the truth. After Russ introduced Kevin to his family, Liz was all over him trying to convince him to set up shop in Bay City. Clarice was chagrined that Larry couldn't perform during their nooner. Brian halted Vivien and Rudy's packing when he realized Iris was about to leave town.

Kirk: (Exit Line) "Don't be a fool, Iris!"

Russ: "[JIM OPENS THE DOOR TO RUSS AND KEVIN] Here we are!"
Jim: "Hi."
Russ: "Kevin Cook, meet my dad, Jim Matthews."
Kevin: (Intro Line) "How do you do, Mr. Matthews? [THEY SHAKE HANDS]"

Kevin: "Hi."
Pat: "Hi, Dr. Cook."
Kevin: "Russ, you never told me that good looks ran in your family."
Russ: "Didn't I?"
Kevin: "No, but it makes for a wonderful surprise."

OCTOBER 24, 1979 (EP. #3883)
Iris was outraged that Brian forbade her from leaving. Mitch watched as Mac and Janice emerged from their limo. Pat revealed Mac and Janice had returned when she realized that was the real reason Rachel came by to see her. Jamie was gratified when Cecile admitted she'd been childish, told him she loved him, and agreed to go away with him for a few days. Brian brought Mac and Janice up to speed on Kirk's murder and Iris's troubles, then was stunned to learn they were married. Scott assured Jeff that the Laverty chauffeur verified his presence at Kennedy airport. Jeff tried to cast suspicion on Iris when Scott interrogated June about threatening Iris. Brian sadly urged Rachel to talk to Mac. Blaine sniffed that Hammond said she might lose her baby in her delicate condition, so Jamie phoned and learned she hadn't seen the doctor in weeks. Jamie thrust the divorce papers at her and made her sign them. Janice surreptitiously removed her wedding ring as she introduced Pat to Mitch, who materialized in her office, as a friend of the family. Janice promised Mitch she'd explain everything at his room at the Skyway Motel. Iris broke down and cried to Brian that Kirk's manipulations made her lose everyone she cares about. Jamie promised Cecile he's been duped by Blaine for the last time. Iris pointed the finger at June after admitting to Scott she'd fought with Kirk, then turned to Brian, appalled, when Scott wanted to make a dental impression from her mouth as it appeared the assailant bit Kirk on the hand while struggling with him. In the tack room, Rachel told Mac she loves him, not Frank, but Mac informed her it was too late as he married someone who doesn't play her games. Janice begged Mitch not to mess up her life.

OCTOBER 25, 1979 (EP. #3884)
Mitch laughed at Janice's insistence she loved Mac and not his money, and she didn't resist when he drew her down on the bed. Rachel sobbed and denigrated Janice, while Mac backtracked when he mentioned her family plans with Frank. Willis refused to discuss Kirk or his lack of affection to her with Angie. Janice took advantage of Mitch's surprise upon learning she married Mac to slip out of bed, put her clothes on, then try to convince him she wanted to vindicated Mac's personal faith in marrying her. Ada discouraged Charlie from helping out in the kitchen. Willis insisted he wasn't even a suspect, and left when Angie wanted to make love. At Tallboys, Kevin and Russ told Pat their research plans. Mac assured Janice that Rachel wouldn't cause problems. Russ sang Kevin's praises to Pat, who admitted she was seeing Brian. Willis groaned about keeping up the charade with Angie, but Gwen felt they might need Angie to lie for him. Rachel cried in Ada's arms. Gwen and Willis visited the Shamrock Bar but failed to establish his whereabouts the night of the murder.

Mitch: "I know all I need to know. You don't love Mac anymore than you loved Howard Battis, and we're in this together. [JANICE EXITS, UPSET, WITHOUT ANSWERING, AS MITCH LIES BACK AND STARES AT THE CEILING, THOUGHTFULLY. COMMERCIAL]"

Notes: Crossed-out dialogue, Kevin discussing his grown-up kids.

OCTOBER 26, 1979 (EP. #3885)
Iris wouldn't tell Brian why she refused to have the dental impression. Vivien made Rudy promise not to tell about Iris threatening Kirk. Iris promised to pay the taxes on Vivien's farm if Rudy got her a small tape recorder. Sally begged off helping Blaine reunite Dennis and Cecile. Cecile awoke to Jamie lovingly treating her to breakfast in bed. Sally defiantly told Blaine she's changed and hopes Dennis starts to have feelings for her. Iris cried in Mac's comforting arms, then offered tepid wedding congratulations. Charlie agreed to let Joey work in the furniture store even though he eventually intends to move on to better things. Sylvie admitted to alcoholism to Mac, and they vowed to stand by Iris. Eileen was happily surprised to find Joey at the store. Jamie was pleased Cecile didn't reject the idea of marriage flat out. Sally was sure Blaine was crying wolf again by doubling over in pain. Joey asked Rose and Angie to make themselves scarce so he can have Eileen for dinner and officially propose. Sally advised Clarice not to bother worrying about Blaine, but Dennis rushed to Blaine's side when she doubled over again. Iris revealed the hidden recorder with a flourish after June admitted bringing the gun to Bay City to use on Iris, just as Brian and Sylvie entered. Joey was relieved that his ring fit Eileen's finger. Brian felt the tape only proved Iris's eagerness to implicate someone else.

OCTOBER 29, 1979 (EP. #3886)
Rachel apologized for snapping at Brooks' concern for her. A preoccupied Willis and Angie didn't have much enthusiasm for Janice's visit, but were incredulous at her wedding news. Linda was on duty (prior to her transfer to the new wing, natch) when Dennis and Sally brought Blaine into the E.R. Janice promised to help when Willis and Angie told her their various problems. Ada kicked a brooding Rachel out of bed and told her to fight for Mac. Mitch hung up when Mac answered the phone. As they awaited word, Sally accused Dennis of being a sucker for a girl in distress. Hammond told Blaine she needed to stay overnight for tests. Ada and Rachel came over to Larry and Clarice's, then Clarice shrieked with joy when Charlie announced his marriage plans. Mac tried to bump Iris from Scott's suspect list, then revealed Kirk's blackmailing of Willis. A call from Scott interrupted Willis and Angie's argument. Even Clarice's negligee couldn't tear Larry away from his studying. Dennis admired Blaine's concern for him when he said he'd set Jamie straight on his obligations toward her. Jeff refused to help Rachel dig up dirt on Janice. Despite lying himself that Kirk used persuasion not blackmail, Willis became angry after Angie lied to Scott that Willis was with her the night of the murder.

OCTOBER 30, 1979 (EP. #3887)
Sylvie said her company was about to go under, then tried to convince Iris that Brian still cared for her. Liz dropped by and was disturbed to see Sylvie. Clarice was curious to find Mitch casing the coffee shop. Brian informed Iris the tape also indicates she knew the gun was in Kirk's suite. Sally was curious when Blaine begged her not to ruin Dennis's opinion of her by telling him of her having faked fainting spells. June admitted bringing the gun to town after Scott assured Jeff he wouldn't listen to Iris's illegal tape, then they told Scott they found the fake documents given to Iris in Kirk's suite after the murder. Kevin told Russ and hospital chairman Amos Oliver that he's decided to accept the new wing as his new cardiac center. Clarice told Larry she was suspicious of Mitch, who said he was interested in buying the place. Liz accused Pat of spooning after coming in as Brian took her hand affectionately to thank her for her continual support. Hammond depressed Blaine by saying she'd have to spend the remainder of her pregnancy in bed. Blaine was disappointed when Dennis said he'd help her by retrieving Jamie from his getaway with Cecile. Liz warned Pat that Iris was using the investigation as a smokescreen to get Brian back. Mitch offered Mr. and Mrs. Cory when the owner, Mr. Adams, wanted local references. Iris refused and fired Brian after Scott offered to disregard the fake documents if she submits to a dental impression. Liz worried about Jim's reaction after telling Pat and Scott of Sylvie's threat against Kirk. Brian promised to help her after Iris admitted biting Kirk on the hand during their struggle.

OCTOBER 31, 1979 (EP. #3888)
Rachel brightly informed Brooks and Louise that she'd be working at the complex. Clarice phoned Mac to ask if he knew Mitchell Blake. As she scrubbed the bloodstains from his shirt, Angie was annoyed that Willis wasn't grateful she'd gone to bat for him with Scott. Angie packed her bags after Willis threw Gwen up to her once too often. An anxious Janice told Mac she met Mitch when she was doing research on discos. Brian got Iris to admit she'd been taking sleeping pills for awhile, and that they made her black out the night of the murder. Rachel announced she was moving into the office next to Pat's, but Janice told Mac she wasn't afraid of Rachel's presence. Rose agreed to have Joey's wedding in her house since she'd been married in her parents' house, then Angie arrived in tears. Willis fumed to Gwen that Angie thinks he's a murderer. Sylvie had to tell Iris that the things Kirk said about her were true. Mac came by to tell Clarice what he knows of Mitch. Rachel told Janice she tore it up for papier mache after reading Brava, when Janice put her on notice about hanging around Mac. Gwen promised Willis she'd never mistrust him about money or anything else again. At Joey's urging, Angie phoned the office and learned Willis could be reached at Gwen's. Rachel stood firm when Mac tried to throw her out of the office. Janice offered to bribe Mitch (with legit funds since he usually used mob money). Scott and Marlowe came to arrest Iris since they'd subpoenaed her dental records, but Iris collapsed, stricken, when Sylvie confessed and was hand-cuffed.

Mac: "Janice has an office here because she is putting out-"
Rachel: "She sure is putting out."
Mac: "Unlike some people!"
...
Rachel: "Come on, Mac, she started the magazine so she could get into the publisher's bed."
Mac: "Nobody else was getting into it."

NOVEMBER 1, 1979 (EP. #3889)
Vivien and Iris both got on the phone to inform Brian of Sylvie's confession. Mitch seduced Janice again after letting her know he expects her to use Mac's money to help him start his new disco. Joey told Rose he's concerned about Angie's reaction upon learning Willis was at Gwen's. Gwen delayed Angie to give a beleaguered Willis time to put his pants on, but Angie refused to believe their lies. Sylvie tried to convince Scott she had sufficient motive for killing Kirk. Vivien and Iris explained to Brian how Sylvie was arrested. Janice was upset when she inferred Mitch was interested only in her money, then gave him a check to prevent him from bringing his bankrolling hoods to Bay City. Angie sobbed to Joey, who felt she might have misunderstood an innocent situation. Gwen insisted to Willis it was safer to stop seeing each other until the real killer is found. Sylvie said it was her drunkenness at the time that was making her forget the details of the murder. Sylvie refused Brian's help and revealed her past murder conviction. Mac revealed his desire to buy them a house, and then set up a separate account for Janice when she let it slip she's been helping Emma out financially. After Willis found Joey removing Angie's belongings, he half-heartedly asserted his devotion to her. Brian was puzzled when Iris insisted Sylvie was innocent, then was stunned when Vivien repeated Iris's death threats against Kirk.

NOVEMBER 2, 1979 (EP. #3890)
Rachel listed the reasons she should use the office, and Mac, secretly amused, agreed to let her use it until she finishes a model of the sculpture. Sally was annoyed to witness Dennis bring Blaine home from the hospital. Blaine gazed at Dennis through her tears as he put his arm around her and vowed to look after her until they found Jamie. Jim was almost defiant when Scott questioned him about Sylvie's threat. Eileen vowed to still marry Joey despite telling Rose her parents disapprove. Rachel eavesdropped as Janice discouraged Mac from accompanying her on a quick jaunt to New York. Brian welcomed Cecile and Jamie home and told them of Blaine's hospitalization. At the law school library, Scott helped Eileen when she swooned and dropped a stack of books, then he offered her a job in the D.A.'s office to help her pay for law school. Jim visited Sylvie in prison, but she maintained she was right where she belonged. After warning Mitch not to arouse Mac's jealousy, Janice introduced the two men. Mitch pooh-poohed their concern for the college kids who use the coffee shop to study in. Rachel brought Frank up to speed. Eileen assured Joey the letter from her parents won't stop their plans to spend the rest of their lives together. Dennis didn't care about Jamie's information that Blaine has faked trouble before, then ran to Blaine's side when she cried weakly about not wanting to cause trouble between them. Rachel told Ada of her plans to spy on Janice in New York. Mitch informed Janice he might decide to join her in New York.

NOVEMBER 5, 1979 (EP. #3891)
Iris became emotional when Sylvie said goodbye and forbade her from ever visiting her in prison again. Angie blurted out her lie to Scott when Rose advised her to give Willis up. Gwen didn't share Willis's belief that Sylvie's confession got him off the hook. Kevin dropped by to chat pleasantly with Pat. Iris begged Brian to help Sylvie, then was shocked when he said he can get her, Iris, off on a plea of temporary insanity. Rose put Gwen on the spot about her feelings for Willis, and begged her not to keep Angie in the dark if she and Willis are together again. Russ told Kevin he'll meet him and Pat at L'Auberge later on, then introduced him to Jamie. Since Jamie was fascinated by the high-tech equipment being moved into the new wing and admitted he doesn't feel cut out for publishing, Russ urged him to consider medicine. Iris was afraid to hope when Dennis hoped she'd get back together with Brian. Jim fumed about Liz when Brian felt Scott readily accepted Sylvie's confession because of what Liz had told him, and they both agreed Sylvie was trying too hard to convince everyone of her guilt. Kevin changed the subject when Pat brought up his wife. Jim relented when Liz sobbed she'd forgotten Scott was the D.A. when she made her big slip. Iris inquired of Jeff if he expected June to finance him the way Vera Finley did, then offered him a quarter million to do everything he could to get June indicted. Rose was appalled that Willis, who admitted he loved Gwen, was deceiving Angie to protect himself from the damage of Angie retracting her statement to Scott.

Sylvie: "It's not very pretty, is it?"
Iris: "I've never been in a place like this."
Sylvie: "You were born in a place like this, my dear."

Jamie: "I was just wondering if it's totally crazy for someone like myself to even think about a medical career."

Notes: "Camera in mirror" in Gwen/Willis scene.

Notes: Script change: Kevin having two children to having none.

NOVEMBER 6, 1979 (EP. #3892)
Rachel visited Quentin and recruited him in her campaign to learn about Janice's New York life. Janice told her lawyer, Marvin Fallows, she was dropping out of the fight with Howard's relatives over her inheritance. Jamie refused Blaine's request to move in and take care of her, then voiced his annoyance over her new chummy attitude with Dennis. An agitated Larry denied Clarice's claim they had problems in the bedroom. Mac urged Jamie not to let his problems with Blaine come between him and Cecile. Rachel and Quentin's act got the doorman to reveal Janice's affair with Howard, who died a year ago last spring. Dennis wouldn't let Blaine blame herself her for the friction between him and Jamie, since Cecile was the one who'd played them off against each other. Blaine revealed it was due to Sally's interest in him when Dennis wondered why Sally would make up stories about her faking illness. Clarice was crestfallen when Larry jumped at Jamie's idea to have Blaine come stay with them. Cecile said that Elena wants to sell the house since she's decided to stay on in France, but Brian decided not to buy it. Mac felt the house would be perfect for him and Janice. Rachel scoured old microfilm to learn that thirty minutes elapsed between Howard's fatal heart attack and the time Janice summoned an ambulance. Blaine vowed to Clarice she'd give it one last shot with Jamie, then vehemently turned down Mac's offer to get her a live-in nurse. Quentin convinced Rachel to spend the evening doing the hustle in a disco. In an attempt to win him back with honesty, Blaine confessed she'd faked the abortion attempt, but Jamie just took it as proof he can never trust her. Dennis held Blaine and vowed to be there for her after Jamie walked out. Janice was mortified when Rachel came across her and Mitch dancing in his disco.

NOVEMBER 7, 1979 (EP. #3893)
Mac complained to Rachel that her sudden trip disrupted his visitation schedule. Rose dissuaded Angie from clinging to false hopes about Willis. Willis and Gwen decided to level with Angie since Rose already had the situation pretty well doped out. Brian was aghast when Iris admitted bribing Jeff into framing June. Jeff gave Iris's check to Scott. Mac was taken aback when Janice revealed Rachel had dogged her footsteps in New York. Rose and Paul told Scott that Angie lied to protect Willis. Angie warned a laid-back Gwen to let Willis go or she'll implicate him in the murder. Brian made Iris confess to Scott, then Jim brought Morris Singer in to verify Sylvie was in New York when Kirk was killed. Ada and Charlie begged Rachel to end the feud with Janice, but she showed them the article on Howard's death. Sylvie thanked Jim and Morris for their timely help, then begged Brian to help keep Iris from prison. Angie fell apart when Willis finally told her he had reunited with Gwen. Rachel thrust the clippings at him but an angry Mac ripped them to shreds. Angie was rehearsing what to say to Scott when she drove into a truck.

NOVEMBER 8, 1979 (EP. #3894)
Willis told Gwen that Angie stormed out with his bloody shirt. Mac fumed to Janice about Rachel's hatchet job. Clarice moaned to Ada that Larry doesn't love her anymore since their love life was nothing to brag about. Brian was troubled when Rachel told him of Janice's role in Howard's death, but warned her against maligning Janice to Mac. Linda and Dr. Graham worked over Angie. Gwen convinced Willis that coming clean with Scott was his best defense. Rachel argued that Brian was obligated to warn Mac that Howard's family was suing Janice over her inheritance. Janice found the ripped clippings. Ada and Charlie were discussing wedding plans with Clarice and Larry when a distraught Rose came over with news of Angie's accident. Graham brought Kevin and Russ up to date. Mitch advised Janice to tell Mac about her tarnished past before Rachel gets a chance to. Willis admitted to Scott he was bombed the night of the murder. Larry sulked when Clarice admitted sharing with Ada intimate details of their life together. Rose sobbed in Paul's arms as Kevin told her Angie's fractured rib punctured her pericardium and it's filling with blood. Janice threatened to destroy Rachel if she gets in her way.

NOVEMBER 9, 1979 (EP. #3895)
Rose spewed vile to Paul about Willis's evil nature. Kevin assured Willis the baby was fine. Brian offered to unsnarl Sylvie's business, then Iris raged at them for thinking she might be guilty. Sally couldn't believe her ears when Blaine ventured Jamie wasn't worth fighting for. Willis and Rose heatedly accused the other of making Angie miserable. Paul comforted Rose and Willis turned to Gwen a broken man when Russ announced the baby was lost. Jim didn't like Sally's plan to apply for a job in the new disco, then Sally confessed she's become more interested in Dennis than in Morgan. Sally phoned to let Iris know Dennis was hanging out with Blaine. Gwen filled Russ in on her recent history with Willis. Willis was apprehensive to learn Scott had his bloody shirt. Sylvie couldn't convince Iris it was pretentious to try to choose someone for Dennis on the basis of their social background. Kevin and Russ began to operate. Jamie requested Cecile's approval before embarking on a career in medicine. Joey grabbed Willis's shirtfront after Rose blame him for the accident. Kevin realized Angie had an aneurism of the thorasic aorta. Dennis discouraged a disconsolate Blaine from joining her father in Oklahoma. Marlowe and Scott arrested Willis after learning the blood stains matched Kirk's type, not his. Angie went into cardiac arrest.

NOVEMBER 12, 1979 (EP. #3896)
The defribrilator resumed the blips on Angie's heart monitor. Gwen was distracted as Mitch described his plans for the disco. Clarice told Rachel of Larry's graduation. Willis was exasperated when Scott and Marlowe tried to dredge up his memory. Cecile had to shout out her love for Jamie to convince Iris she was no longer interested in Dennis. Mitch insisted he only knew Janice casually when Rachel re-introduced herself to him. Brian assured Iris that Dennis was much too sensible to get mixed up with someone who'll be bad for him. Mac was happy that Janice thought highly of Elena's house. Gwen hired lawyer Brad Cullen to represent Willis. Marlowe nodded thoughtfully when bellhop Sammy disagreed with Rudy, feeling Willis had been at the hotel the night of the murder. Brian thought there might be an innocent explanation when Rachel told hm Mitch had relocated to Bay City. Mitch didn't want to deprive himself of her beauty when Janice warned him Rachel will use him. Jeff still pointed the finger at Iris when Scott told him Willis had been arraigned. Russ agreed when Gwen felt a hypnotist might be able to unlock Willis's memories. Rachel came upon Janice and Mac discussing plans to refurnish the house. Janice panicked when Brian arrived to speak with Mac.

NOVEMBER 13, 1979 (EP. #3897)
Janice walked in after Brian told Mac that Janice was involved in litigation in New York. Kevin told Pat that Reena insists on staying in Dallas. Charlie and Russ were concerned when Eileen almost fainted. Liz denied she had tender feelings for Jim, but Sylvie felt she and Jim cared deeply for each other. Mac refused to listen to Brian since Rachel was his source of info, but Janice stunned him with her confession about being Howard's mistress. When Russ subtly pushed Pat into befriending Kevin, she was interested to hear of his marriage troubles. Joey worried when Charlie told him about Eileen's woozy spell. Rachel seethed when Brian sympathized with Janice. Rachel told Ada she was optimistic about Mac's reaction. Mac soured on the similarities between him and Howard, but Janice insisted any comparisons were misleading. Graham told Joey and Eileen her fainting seemed to be nothing but a normal reaction to the stress of Angie's situation. Jim and Sylvie said goodbye after he denied her assertion he wouldn't be so defensive about Liz if there weren't an attraction. Kevin warned Pat that Reena, a member of the wealthy Bellman family, wasn't an easy woman to please. Mac erupted when Rachel presumed to tell him his marriage was a mistake and was outraged when she suggested a reconciliation.

NOVEMBER 14, 1979 (EP. #3898)
Gwen visited Willis in prison. Angie dreamed Willis loved her, but awoke perplexed to Joey's face. Janice begged Mitch to hep her get back in good with Mac, so he suggested she use the sympathy ploy since her brother was in jail. Rose was in shock when Angie asked if she had a boy or a girl. Sylvie promised to stay in touch and urged Iris to work things out with Brian. Gwen was rapt as Dr. Powell hypnotized Willis, who remember the Seagull Bar. Dennis admitted to Iris he still loved Cecile but had to accept the fact that he's lost her. Bar owner Donovan recognized Willis, but had thrown him out after only ten minutes. Blaine was thrilled when Dennis offered to take her to a concert. Janice asked Willis to tell Mac that Kirk had blackmailed him about telling Mac about Howard, so Mac will think she held back the truth because it might make Willis look like a murder suspect. Dennis was furious when Iris's insults got Blaine so upset she began having abdominal pains. Kevin told Rose and Joey that Angie has retrograde amnesia and shouldn't be agitated with the truth. A smug Janice told Mitch of her plan to convince Mac she'd been trying to protect Willis. Willis realized Angie was confused.

Mitch: (To Janice) "Mac seems to be angry with your whole family. Maybe we ought to take him back to Chadwell so he can meet Emma. He'd probably be mad at her, too."

Iris: (To Dennis) "You'd better phone downstairs, now, darling."
Sylvie: (Exit Line) "Why don't you wait until I powder my nose?"

NOVEMBER 15, 1979 (EP. #3899)
Rachel reminisced about Mac sitting for her as she sculpted him, then learned he had stayed overnight at the complex. Willis was vague when Angie wanted details about their baby. Blaine whined to Dennis that everyone looks down their nose at her, despite that she's truly changed, then she gave Jamie the cold shoulder when he came to check up on her. Paul filled Gwen and Willis in about Angie's amnesia when Rose refused to suffer their presence. Brian told Mac that Mike (whom he'll be replacing soon) and Karen have just bought a house, then felt Mac was judging Janice too harshly. Rachel told Pat that Mac may have finally seen the light about his dear, sweet bride. Jamie accused Blaine of wanting to turn Dennis into a surrogate father for the baby when she informed him he no longer has any rights to the baby. Frank told Rachel he's been offered a staff job on a magazine in New York. Gwen tried to cheer Willis up by describing their fantastic future. Janice butted heads with Gwen when she pressed Willis to talk to Mac, but they all agreed Mac might help Willis with his troubles if he learns Willis had been protecting Janice. Dennis belted Jamie when he said Blaine wanted him to take over Jamie's responsibilities as father of the child. Angie cried for her baby after Kevin realized her memory returned. Mac wasn't interested in Rachel's declaration of love. Janice showed up on the heels of Willis's explanation to Mac about siding with Kirk at the stockholders meeting. Marlowe convinced Scott to put a tail on Willis.

Frank: (Exit Line) "Then you've got to convince Mac that you love him, and that what you did will be right for him in the long run. [RACHEL CONSIDERS THIS AS FRANK WATCHES HER. FADE OUT]"

NOVEMBER 16, 1979 (EP. #3900)
Gwen vowed to pin the rap on Iris when a defeatist Willis didn't like his odds. Iris lamented to a concerned Vivien that she'll likely never see her mother again. Dennis warned Iris to stay out of his life. Iris received a phone call from Tracy DeWitt, returned to New York from Alassio, mourning her husband Claude, killed in an avalanche while skiing. Tracy's eyes lit up when the jeweler showed her a stunning diamond necklace, but she was forced to sell her own jewelry since she's broke. Jeff comforted June, who worried about Scott's summons. Blaine covered her disappointment when Dennis informed her he wasn't in love with her. Iris pointed the finger at June when Gwen confronted her about her role in the murder. Scott advised Willis to check his credit card records. Larry insisted to Ada he wasn't having marital difficulties with Clarice. Mitch sparked when Clarice introduced him to Ada. Jeff's profession of love didn't stop June from worrying about being accused. Gwen was shocked to learn Willis discussed a plea of temporary insanity with Brad. Tracy told Vivien she was about to descend on Iris. Vivien handed Iris the gun she found under some towels in the dressing room closet. Vivien spied petrified as Iris dumped the gun in a trash bin.

Vivien: "Who's calling, please? [...] Mrs. Tracy De Witt? [SHE TURNS TO IRIS, WHO MOVES QUICKLY TO THE PHONE, AND ANSWERS IT TO TRACY, TWO-WAY, NEW YORK HOTEL ROOM]"
Iris: "Tracy, darling, what a pleasant surprise!"
Tracy: (Intro Line, Janice Lynde) "Are you sure it's pleasant?"
Iris: "Of course -- why shouldn't it be?"

Iris: "Yes, would you ring area code 212-555-8000 [...] Yes, I'll hold."
Vivien: "[OS] Mrs. Bancroft! [IRIS COVERS RECEIVER WITH HER HAND]"
Iris: "I'm on the phone."
Vivien: "[OS] Hang up! [WITHOUT THINKING, IRIS DOES SO, THEN IS EXASPERATED]"

NOVEMBER 19, 1979 (EP. #3901)
Tracy admitted to Iris she was flat broke. Iris was exasperated when Vivien wondered if they were condemning an innocent Willis by discarding the gun. Sally was crestfallen when Eileen revealed her wedding plans, then revealed she's considering becoming a nurse to help her straighten her life out. Mac told Pat to go ahead with the next issue of Brava by herself, then ordered Brian to take Willis's case. Iris was grateful when Mac held out his arms to her, then he filled her in on Willis's dilemma and his estrangement from Janice. Kevin was impatient when Joey wanted to know why Angie preferred not to have visitors, but Linda assured him she was in good hands. Pat shrugged noncommitally when Mitch wondered if Rachel would consent to doing a sculpture for the disco. Joey vowed to marry Eileen anyway and forbade Russ and Kevin from telling anyone else that she's dying of a tumor. Janice lost her poise when Pat felt Mitch was intrigued by Rachel. Tracy reminded Iris of Cecile's affair with Philip, a charming, good-looking, virile man from an impeccable background. Joey insisted to Paul that Eileen's family couldn't be told or it will prevent her from spending the rest of her days happy. Joey convinced Eileen to have a quickie wedding right away then one with all the trimmings later on. Iris went white when Vivien told her the trash people have gone on strike.

Notes: Philip's name was edited from Philippe de Lyons to Philip Lyons.

NOVEMBER 20, 1979 (EP. #3902)
Student nurse Kit Farrell was working on the folders when an agitated Joey arrived. Liz thought Kit a lovely girl when she delivered a report to Russ. Russ agreed to stretch the truth for Joey and not inform Eileen's parents since he married his second wife when she didn't have long to live. Iris promised to help Tracy find a rich husband, then phoned to invite Cecile over for the party. Cecile beamed when Jamie said he got in the top two percentile on the medical board scores. For Eileen's sake, Paul told Joey he had a job for him at the foundry, then slipped him $1,200. Liz told Pat that Sally might be rejected from nursing school because of her shoplifting. Willis told Brian what little he remembers of the night of the murder. Rachel was reluctant to accept Mitch's commission. Liz was thrilled when Mac asked her to return to work. Willis pleaded Janice's case to Mac. Joey and Eileen picked out rings. Pat suggested Rachel do a whimsical mobile for the disco. Tracy told Cecile that Elena opened a gallery in France. Morose to find Dennis at the party, Cecile informed him and Iris that she and Jamie will be getting married. Brian wondered why Cecile got so upset when Tracy and Iris conspired to get her to reveal her true feelings about Philip. So she won't be bored during their marriage, Jamie told Cecile about a graduate program the museum is offering in art history. Iris phoned Philip and introduced herself. When Mitch thought her greedy for wanting everything she can get her hands on, Janice promised that one day she'll bring him everything she's gotten from Mac.

'HOSPITAL WAITING AREA AND NURSES' STATION, MORNING. LINDA IS AT THE DESK LOGGING LAB REPORTS. KIT ENTERS.'
Kit: (Intro Line) "Are those the lab reports you wanted me to deliver?"
Linda: "Yes, Kit, but they have to be logged first. Here, watch how it's done. [SHE SHOWS HER]"

Iris: "Really, Brian, you can't blame me for Cecile's moods."
Brian: "I'm not so sure about that."
Vivien: "[PASSING BY] You can say that again. [BRIAN TURNS TO STOP HER]"
Brian: "What do you mean by that, Vivien--"
Iris: "You may go now, Vivien. [BRIAN SEES VIVIEN SIGNALING TO IRIS]"
Vivien: "Tell him, tell him! [SHE MOUTHS THE WORD G-U-N]"
Brian: "Tell me what? What is she saying? [VIVIEN EXITS]"
Iris: "I haven't a clue."
Brian: "You're lying to me, Iris. I want to know what's going on."
Iris: "A party, darling. [IRIS SWEEPS OVER TO DENNIS, GATHERS CECILE ON HER ARM, AND MOVES THEM TO TRACY]"

NOVEMBER 21, 1979 (EP. #3903)
Mac asked Janice for an airing of her former life in New York. Joey and Eileen assured Judge Waverly they were doing the right thing by getting married in his living room. Joey flashbacked to Kevin and Russ's vow of silence as he and Eileen recited their vows. As God was her witness, Janice told Mac the truth about befriending a lonely Howard. Janice was pleased when Mac offered to buy the house to make up for treating her so harshly. Rose's temper flared when Joey revealed they didn't marry in a church, but she embraced Eileen warmly. A happy Rachel agreed to have their wedding in the mansion when Jamie and Cecile announced they were ready to set a date. Kit told the Perrini's and Willis they could see Angie shortly. Mitch offered Sally a job in the disco if the nursing gig falls through, then was displeased when Janice phoned with news of her reconciliation. Angie admitted to Rose and Willis she'd become pregnant to trap him in a relationship, then she and Willis tenderly ended their relationship. Rachel stopped dead when she came over to Brian's and found him with Mac and Janice, then was sarcastic to find them in the first blush of excitement. Kit described the joys of nursing to Sally. Ada worried when Rachel decided Mitch might be the key to rescuing Mac. On their honeymoon in the mountains, Joey and Eileen ignored the bottle of champagne and approached each other a bit shyly. In the disemboweled campus coffee shop, Rachel told Mitch she might be interested in the commission.

Waverly: "Give her the ring. [JOEY GETS THE RING AND PUTS IT ON EILEEN'S FINGER] At this point I always like to add something to the ceremony. It's a quotation. No one knows who wrote it, but it's very old. [BEAT] 'Look to this day, For it is life, the very life of life. In its brief course lie all the verities and realities of your existence: the bliss of growth, the glory of action, the splendor of beauty. For yesterday is but a dream, and tomorrow is only a vision; but today well-lived makes every yesterday and dreams of happiness, and every tomorrow a vision of hope. Look well, therefore to this day.' [BEAT] Joey, Eileen, by the authority vested in me as a judge of Bay County Court, I now pronounce you husband and wife. [THEY KISS. FADE OUT]"

NOVEMBER 22, 1979: Pre-empted for Thanksgiving Football.

NOVEMBER 23, 1979 (EP. #3904)
Eileen awoke blissfully in Joey's arms to relate her dream they'd built a house on their special place on the hill. Philip phoned to let Iris know he'd arrived in New York. Iris made excuses when Tracy found her on the phone with him. Paul hid his disquiet when Rose was radiant about her family's recent good fortune. Dennis arrived to see Blaine after she told Clarice and Larry that he wasn't interested in her. Iris was exasperated when Brian questioned her about the murder. Blaine collapsed in Dennis's arms after more stomach pains. As Brian questioned June, Jeff asked him if the gun had been found yet. Gwen thanked Angie for letting Willis go. Hammond told Jamie, Dennis, Clarice, and Larry that Blaine was fine, but the baby was lost. Philip agreed when Iris offered to pay him to win Cecile away from Jamie and then dump her. Gwen told Russ she strives to stop being so sensitive about Willis's financial habits since her domination can be the ruination of a good man. Jeff asked June if she killed Kirk. Paul said his annulment should come through in another month, and Rose said she wants to use Sylvie's bonus check to open an Italian restaurant, then they received a call from the happy newlyweds. Blaine told Jamie it was time for them to say goodbye for good. The gun was partially visible.

Iris: "Hello?"
Philip: (Intro Line) "[TWO-WAY, LIMBO PUBLIC PHONE] May I speak with Iris Bancroft, please?"
Iris: "Philip, is that you?"
Philip: "Yes, I told you I'd call this morning."

NOVEMBER 26, 1979 (EP. #3905)
Mac let Rachel know she should have acted like a civilized adult yesterday. Eileen wondered why Joey wanted to spend all their time in their room. Gwen was annoyed Janice was so ebullient despite Willis's predicament, then Willis fumed to realize the police were keeping a tail on him. Liz was intrigued to overhear Pat ask Russ if Kevin would like to join them for dinner. Janice shook Liz's hand and agreed to let bygones be bygones. Joey fantasized Russ told him she would be fine as Eileen rested her head on his shoulder after a swim tired her out. Pat was surprised to hear Janice say she might give up her job to devote herself fully to Mac. Kevin received a call from Reena, who let him know she has no intention of exiling herself in Bay City or of leading a celibate life in Houston. Reena raged at her father, Striker, for giving Kevin enough money to move halfway across the country, but he offered to get her either Kevin or Russ. Larry pressed Blaine to free herself completely from Jamie by giving up his alimony. Russ good-naturedly turned down Reena's offer to fly down to be with her. Blaine told Clarice that Larry was so miserable as a child he vowed never to have any of his own. Ada got nervous when Rachel promised not to concern herself with Janice any longer. Joey was too moved to speak when Eileen promised he'd never lose her. Liz feigned surprise when she came upon Kevin at Pat's dinner party, but Jim wedged himself between them on the sofa. Sally told Kevin of her plans to be a nurse like Alice and Marianne. A stirred Pat put her hand up to her cheek where Kevin kissed it goodbye. An unhappy Ada stared hard at them as Rachel invited Mitch to stay to discuss the mobile.

Kevin: "This is Dr. Cook. [...] Yes, I'll hold. [TO RUSS] My wife is calling from Houston. Catch you later. [HE EXITS. CUT TO REENA DRESSING ROOM. REENA IS SEATED AT HER DRESSING TABLE, AMID EXPENSIVE JEWELRY AND MAKE-UP, ETC. FURS AND EVENING CLOTHES ARE VISIBLE.'
Reena: (Intro Line) "Hello? Kevin?"
Kevin: "[TWO-WAY] Hello, Reena."
Reena: "You don't sound overjoyed to hear from me."

'CUT TO REENA'S DRESSING ROOM. REENA SITS ON THE CHAISE FOR A MOMENT, THEN SHE RISES, GOES TO THE DRESSING TABLE AND STARTS BRUSHING HER HAIR, FURIOUSLY, WHEN SHE HEARS HER FATHER'S VOICE APPROACHING.'
Striker: (Intro Line, James Clifton) "[OS] Reena? Reena, honey, where are you? [SHE DOESN'T REPLY. HE APPEARS IN THE DOORWAY AND STANDS WATCHING HER FOR A BEAT] Sweetheart, you won't have any hair left if you treat it that way."
Reena: "[STILL SEETHING] It's my hair."
Striker: "What was all that yelling I heard?"
Reena: "What yelling?"
Striker: "It carried all the way downstairs to the billiard room."
...
Reena: "I haven't found anyone yet who could hold a candle to Kevin where it counts-- except maybe Russ Matthews. [THEN SHE SHAKES HER HEAD] No. No more doctors-- it isn't worth it."
Striker: "[EXPANSIVELY] You want him, honey, I'll get him for you."
Reena: "[TURNS BACK TO HIM] And I'll bet you would, too."
Striker: "Anything my baby wants."
Reena: "Anything?"
Striker: "Have I ever let you down?"
Reena: "[DRAPING HER ARMS OVER HIS SHOULDERS] You're the best, Striker-- I really mean it. There's not a man around who can measure up to you."
Striker: "Now that's my little Reena talking."

Notes: In their first week, Reena originally referred to Striker as "Daddy," but this was edited each day in most cases so that she referred to him by his name. Striker made his fortune wildcatting for oil, hence his nickname.

NOVEMBER 27, 1979 (EP. #3906)
Iris gave Philip the handwritten contract he demanded, and paid him half the money in advance. Mac told Cecile she's welcome to stay on in the guest house, then was saddened to hear Jamie would be leaving the publishing business. Scott told Brian he'd be willing to consider a guilty plea to a lesser charge. Iris wondered why Vivien was crossing her eyes when she and Rudy were working out secret signals. Angie went into hysterics when Scott tried to twist her words into a condemnation of Willis. Striker urged Reena to get back to Bay City to retrieve Kevin, and to send along his regards to Mac, an initial investor who helped him make his fortune. Mac asked Willis to be his assistant, ready to take over when he's called away. Janice and Iris agreed Willis would be better off without Gwen. Iris offered to loan Tracy some money, then requested she let Philip escort her to the party. Angie was sick when Brian said she might be subpoenaed to testify for the prosecution. The bellhop was awestruck as Reena phoned to tell Kevin she was in town. Cecile was stunned and Jamie startled when Iris introduced Tracy and Philip to the rest of the partygoers. Iris pointed out to Janice how well Tracy and Willis seemed to hit it off. Jamie was unhappy Cecile wanted to be alone to seethe over Philip's betrayal. Kevin succumbed to Reena after she offered to start a no-strings affair after their divorce. Iris offered to speak to Mac when Tracy needed a job. Rudy found the gun.

Philip: "You're wonderful."
Iris: "What prompted that?"
Philip: "The fact that our minds work in a similar fashion."
Iris: "What fashion is that?"
Philip: "We want the world to behave in a certain way, and if that means destroying somebody else's happiness, so be it."
Iris: "Is that supposed to be a compliment?"
Philip: "Yes, my dear-- the highest of compliments. [IRIS LOOKS DOUBTFUL]"

Philip: "[OS] Cecile!"
Cecile: "Oh, no. [HE APPROACHES]"
Philip: "Cecile, I can't believe it's really you. What a wonderful surprise."
Cecile: "Philip... [HE KISSES HER ON BOTH CHEEKS, THEN CATCHES JAMIE'S DISAPPROVAL]"
Philip: "Don't mind me, old man, it's a European custom."
Jamie: "I thought you were an American."
Philip: "Yes, of course."

NOVEMBER 28, 1979 (EP. #3907)
Rachel and Janice squabbled over Mac. At the bar, Willis had a violent re-encounter with Hank Kelly, who claimed his watch broke when he'd fought with Willis the murder night, so Brian realized the watch's stop time may be proof of his innocence. Pat asked Russ to help steer Sally away from a disco job. Scott questioned Rudy about the gun. Vivien was upset when Rudy filled her in. June identified the gun as hers. When Liz heard Pat turn down Kevin's lunch invitation, Pat admitted his wife was in town. Jeff looked unconvinced when June tried to explain she lost the gun. Rachel saw the tough side of Mitch when she laughed lightly at his ignorance of art. Reena told Russ she comes with the deal if he wanted Striker to set up something for him in Houston. Russ and Kevin dreamed of pioneering an artificial heart. Kevin admitted he married Reena because Striker dangled research money, and that he was still susceptible to her charms. Mitch informed Janice she didn't have the right to tell him who he could or could not see. Ada warned Rachel that Mitch was big trouble. Brian showed Scott the watch that proved Willis's innocence.

NOVEMBER 29, 1979 (EP. #3908)
Brian was upset to learn Iris's fingerprints were on the gun. Iris promised Dennis that his life will soon be sweeter. Philip explained that the woman she caught him with had been dying, but an upset Cecile threw him out when he reminded her of how much they loved each other. Vivien shouted to Brian that wild horses couldn't drag the truth out of her. Cecile was distracted discussing wedding plans with Rachel. Rachel told Mac he was welcome to attend the wedding with Janice. Iris thought it marvelous when Philip reported Cecile had broken down and cried earlier. A furred and bejeweled Reena swept past a star-struck Liz to make Mac's acquaintance, then Brian arrived to fill him in on Iris's dilemma. Russ explained how Sally wasn't typical and requested Kit give her a little encouragement. Reena said goodbye to Russ. Marlowe arrived to arrest Iris before Brian could get her to talk to him. An insecure Cecile asked Jamie to elope, then retracted and asked him to let her spend the night alone again. Kevin and Reena made an effort to part on good terms. Jamie doubted Rachel's assurance that Philip has slipped Cecile's mind. Brian promised to help her when Scott ordered Iris be booked. Iris's cell-mate Ellie tried to give her some useful advice.

Reena: "Daddy's always done his best to keep me a spoiled child, and I've always been delighted to go along with him."

NOVEMBER 30, 1979 (EP. #3909)
Iris still refused Ellie's help. A wildy triumphant June shouted for the death penalty when Jeff showed her the morning paper. Gwen cried in relief when Willis told her he was a free man. Brian guided Iris through the throng of reporters. Angie said she wants to visit the cemetery, Rose found a spot near the hospital for the restaurant, and Paul revealed Iris's woes. Vivien and Tracy coddled Iris when Brian brought her home. Janice complained to Willis when Gwen took a few jabs at her. Brian told Mac and Dennis that Iris was charged with murder in the second degree. Angie had her doubts when Gwen said she intends to trust Willis with her fortune. Cecile and Dennis agreed to be friends. Janice was pleased to find Tracy chatting with Willis. Mac comforted Iris. Tracy and Janice got to know each other. Gwen said she offered to design Rose's restaurant, and was troubled to hear Willis wanted to become Mac's assistant instead of returning to being a contractor. Jeff dragged June out of Iris's suite as she screamed death threats.

DECEMBER 3, 1979 (EP. #3910)
Rachel and Louise agreed Iris would never survive in prison. Janice complained to Mac of Rachel's continued presence at the complex. Clarice encouraged Larry to set Blaine up with one of his fellow cadets. Blaine announced Jamie will feel guilty for the rest of his life that she's renounced his alimony. Mitch admitted Rachel wasn't like typical rich women, then admired her sketches. Clarice told Ada that Fred may be to blame for Larry's impotence. Jeff delayed signing his statement until Scott promised him immunity. June relished the chance to be Scott's star witness. Mitch offered a disco job to Clarice and Blaine, who had nothing good to say about Rachel. Scott reminded Rudy of his statement of hearing Iris threaten to kill Kirk. Mitch teased Janice by saying that she wants him and Mac's money, and he wants her and Rachel's money. Mac overheard as Clarice told Rachel it's obvious Mitch admires her. Mac disapproved of Rachel taking on another commission as it would delay her getting out of the complex office. Larry relaxed when Clarice took Ada's advice and told him she wanted to delay having kids. Clarice ran to the bedroom when she got a soup stain on her dress; Larry followed her in and they ended up in bed. Ada ordered Mac to leave Rachel alone so she can get on with her life. Jeff looked at her with slight revulsion when June revealed she's glad Kirk's dead. Charlie suggested to Ada they have a double wedding with Jamie and Cecile, then Clarice arrived looking chipper. Scott's info made Rachel doubt Iris was incapable of murder. Rachel enjoyed it despite herself when Mitch bathed her in disco lights.

DECEMBER 4, 1979 (EP. #3911)
Brian, Vivien, and Tracy worried how sluggish Iris was after taking some sleeping pills. Liz described to Pat how Reena took her breath away. Mac told Janice that Rachel has finally accepted their marriage, and that he wouldn't be jealous of Mitch the way he was of Frank. Vivien told Brian what she remembered of the murder night, then Rudy delivered the bottle of placebo pills for Iris. Brian and Scott re-enacted the murder in Kirk's suite. Pat didn't enthuse over Mac and Janice's idea to send her down to the Bellmans to research an article on the Women of Texas. Iris said she'd never received it when Jeff told Brian that Kirk had intended to write her a letter of apology. Jeff witnessed a woozy Iris mumble about sleeping forever. Tracy was puzzled when Philip said he wouldn't be in town if it were true he'd run out on her in Europe because she's broke. Janice was curious as she caught the impact Philip had on Cecile. Pat told Kevin she didn't want to see him anymore because she wasn't comfortable with his situation, but smiled in spite of herself when he declared her voice hadn't been firm enough. Janice probed Cecile's feelings, and realized she wasn't over Philip. Brian told Vivien that Kirk's letter might clear Iris. Iris was touched when Willis offered to testify for her. Willis and Tracy looked at each other with mutual interest. Gwen said Willis would be playing Jeff Stone to Mac's Kirk Laverty by accepting his job offer, but Willis fumed her offer to bankroll another construction company was another way to undercut him. Iris begged Vivien to repress her romantic outlook on her life. Vivien told Rudy they had to check out the typewriter in Kirk's suite.

DECEMBER 5, 1979 (EP. #3912)
Pat asked Rachel to dissuade Mitch from hiring Sally. Janice's presence prompted Rachel to accept Mitch's commission. Vivien was entranced by Scott's secretary's typewriter. Russ and Kit encouraged Sally to become a nurse, then Joey phoned in a panic about an unconscious Eileen. Mitch and Janice argued about Rachel. Joey drove to the E.R. with tears streaming down his cheeks. Vivien found Rudy talking to Jeff when she emerged from Scott's office. The police began chasing Joey after Eileen awoke briefly. Janice quizzed Rachel about the mobile. Russ felt Pat was too harsh when she warned Liz not to meddle in her affairs. Mitch agreed to do Rachel a favor by not hiring Sally. Joey swept into the hospital with Eileen in his arms. Joey agreed with Russ not to use heroic measures to prolong Eileen's life. Rose looked with hatred at Sally when she came to express her condolences. Morgan thanked Joey for being so good to his sister. Rose and Paul comforted Joey, who raged at Sally to keep away from him. When Sally felt like she could never forgive herself, Liz (who understood what it felt like to have people look at you with utter and total hatred) said that accepting the pain as punishment makes you stronger. Joey took over Morgan's bedside vigil. Vivien told Rudy they needed to look at Kirk's typewriter ribbon.

Joey: "I love you, Eileen."
Eileen: (Exit Line) "We're going to be so happy together."
Joey: "You bet we are."

DECEMBER 6, 1979 (EP. #3913)
Dennis found Sally maintaining a vigil in the hallway. Kit brought Joey some coffee. Mac was perturbed to notice their closeness when Mitch visited Rachel. Russ and Pat told Dennis they would have Kit speak with Sally. Mac and Janice vetoed Pat's objections to going to Texas. Russ informed Joey that Eileen's parents had arrived. Tracy discussed Iris's woes with Dennis, then wondered why Philip kept coming around. Kit told Sally there was nothing she could do for Joey and Eileen, but as a nurse she can help many others like them. Cecile denied she was obsessed with Philip, but Jamie advised her to get him out of her system by listening to everything he has to say. Russ filled Kevin in on Pat's trip. Reena let Pat know she was looking forward to her visit. On Joey's urging, Kit rambled to fill up the silence. Bill and Nora were upset with Joey for marrying Eileen against their wishes, but he managed to convince them he loved her more than anything else in the world. Reena was suspicious of Kevin and Pat, but Striker just lamented Mac and his wife weren't coming down. Rachel suspected Iris was involved when Jamie said she'd been at the party where Philip was introduced. Philip claimed Laura manipulated him with her illness, but Cecile believed he'd dumped her after learning she has no money despite coming from a wealthy family. Sally told Dennis she didn't know how not to love Joey. Mac told Janice he doesn't want a disco manager to be Amanda's father. Joey prepped Morgan before he let him visit with Eileen.

DECEMBER 7, 1979 (EP. #3914)
Iris told Tracy she would pitch her photography skills to Mac. Larry boasted he had patrol car training with supercop Bud Parker, then allowed Clarice to take the disco job. Scott and Brian discussed trial dates. A vindictive June told Jeff she wants Iris to experience the same suffering she does. Though initially miffed at Sally for ignoring her for so long, Blaine was concerned when Sally was almost suicidal in her depression. Iris asked Janice to look over Tracy's portfolio. Brian and Vivien were pleased about the wonders the placebos were doing for Iris. Mac thought Janice wonderful when she offered to check out Mitch's angle. Pat tried to comfort Sally, insisting her whole family was worried about her. Willis raved over Tracy's photographs, then Janice fumed when Gwen arrived and dragged him away. Tracy saw Mitch's photos in the Brava article on discomania and thought him sexy. Mitch asked Sally if it would be all right if he lied and said he turned her down for the job. Tracy left for a trip to New York. Vivien explained how Kirk's ribbon was the kind that goes through only once. Vivien pulled the ribbon out of the cartridge, and Iris read Kirk's letter to her, as a key turned in the door. They realized Kirk had managed to type the name of his killer, then they were confronted by a gunman.

DECEMBER 10, 1979 (EP. #3915)
Louise told Rachel that Mitch phoned with a dinner invitation. Jeff cowed Vivien and Iris by saying he can only be convicted once, then noticed when Iris dropped the ribbon to the floor. Janice was dismayed when Mitch received a call from Rachel accepting his invite. Jim was embarrassed when Liz felt their friendship was ripening more and more each day, but was pleased Sally would be moving in with her. Mac seemed not to be bothered when Janice felt Rachel might get taken in by Mitch. Iris thought maybe June was the killer when Jeff said he had an airtight alibi since someone had picked him up at the NY airport the murder night. When Brooks remarked on the intensity of the storm, Rachel asked Mitch to stay for dinner. Sally refused to leave the hospital when Morgan didn't want her to upset the family. Russ assured Rose and Paul that Eileen was in no pain. Mac phoned to see how Rachel was faring in the storm, but Janice doubted she was having dinner with just the servants. Joey described for Rose the beauty of the honeymoon and the judge's poem. When the storm blew the French doors open, Brooks suggested Mitch leave now to beat the brunt of the storm, but Mitch's car got stuck on the icy driveway. Mitch removed his winter clothes as Louise looked on disapprovingly. Jeff informed Iris she was to write a letter on her personal stationary, then Mac tapped lightly on the door. Iris screamed after Jeff made Vivien answer the door, but the corridor was empty.

'LAVERTY SUITE, SAME TIME. WE OPEN ON THE GUN. THEN WE SEE IRIS AND VIVIEN STARING AT SOMEONE OFF CAMERA WITH SHOCK IN THEIR EXPRESSIONS. IRIS SLOWLY LIFTS THE TYPEWRITER RIBBON SHE'S BEEN LOOKING AT.'
Iris: "Kirk wrote your name-- [THE CAMERA SLOWLY PANS FROM THE GUN TO JEFF'S FACE]"
Jeff: "On the letter he was writing to you?"
Iris: "Yes."
Jeff: "That's unfortunate."
Vivien: "It's unfortunate for you, Mr. Stone."

DECEMBER 11, 1979 (EP. #3916)
Janice blamed the weather when Mac noticed her dark mood. Mitch realized he wasn't popular with the servants. Janice was uneasy and restless when Mac reported Rachel said Mitch was stranded at the mansion. June wouldn't believe it when Brian suggested Kirk may have written Iris a letter. Dennis warned Cecile he has a bad feeling about Philip. June phoned Brian to come over when it appeared someone tampered with Kirk's typewriter. Charlie was shocked when Ada told him Eileen's bad news, then Ada worried after phoning and learning Mitch was stuck at Rachel's. Joey grieved when Eileen died peacefully. Rachel was amused when Mitch wondered to Louise if she preferred he sleep on the couch rather than a guest room. Philip's arrival interrupted Cecile's sketching. Sally insisted to Russ there must be some way for her to help Joey. Joey shook the snow off himself as he determinedly made his way through the woods. Brian phoned for Scott to come over after he and June realized an intruder had taken the ribbon. On the hill top, his face radiant, Joey remembered proposing a hasty marriage, marrying Eileen, and the first time he took her here. Hearing Eileen's voice recite the judge's poem, Joey realized he'll always be able to find her on this hill, but then slipped and hit his head on a rock. Brian decided to talk to Iris.

Joey: "She'll be in God's hands soon."
Russ: "She always has been, right from the beginning, Joey."
Joey: "Yes, but you never give up hope-- even when you know."
Russ: "And that's good. It keeps you going."
Joey: "Can I be alone with Eileen for awhile?"
Russ: "Yes, of course. I'll be in my office if you need me. [RUSS GIVES JOEY A COMPASSIONATE LOOK, THEN EXITS QUIETLY. JOEY TAKES EILEEN'S HAND]"
Joey: "Hey, Mrs. Perinni. [SHE DOESN'T MOVE. HE STROKES HER FOREHEAD AND HAIR, THEN SITS VERY CLOSE TO THE EDGE OF THE BED] Mrs. Perinni? [SHE BEGINS TO STIR SLIGHTLY. HE ALERTS-- THEN SHE OPENS HER EYES, LOOKS AT HIM DIMLY] Hi, sleepyhead, look what I brought you. [HE TAKES HER HAND AND PUTS SOMETHING IN IT] It's an early Christmas present-- a Saint Christopher's medal-- for luck. [SHE SEEMS TO HEAR HIM AND A FAINT SMILE COMES INTO HER FACE. HE KISSES HER TENDERLY. HER HAND STARTS TO MOVE SLOWLY TOWARD HIM, THEN STOPS AND SLIDES BACK TO HER SIDE. IT OPENS, AND THE MEDAL FALLS TO THE FLOOR. JOEY IS TOTALLY STILL FOR A MOMENT-- SENSING THE CHANGE. HIS HEAD MOVES SLOWLY OVER HER HEART. A MOMENT, THEN HE LIFTS HIS HEAD AND LOOKS AT HER. HE SEES THAT THERE IS STILL A FAINT SMILE ON HER FACE. HE PICKS UP THE MEDAL AND ENCLOSES IT IN HER HAND AND PLACES HER HAND BY HER SIDE. HIS EYES FILL WITH TEARS] For luck, Eileen. [THEN HE RISES SUDDENLY, RUSHES TO THE DOOR, OPENS IT. CUT TO CORRIDOR. JOEY SHOUTS] Dr. Matthews, Dr. Matthews! [THE NURSE APPEARS] Please, where is Dr. Matthews?"
Nurse: "Next door. [JOEY BRUSHES PAST HER, AND SHE ENTERS THE ROOM. RUSS EMERGES FROM ANOTHER DOOR.
RUSS AND NURSE RUSH INTO EILEEN'S ROOM. WE SEE RUSS EXAMINE EILEEN AS JOEY LOOKS ON. RUSS TURNS AND LOOKS AT HIM SADLY]"
Russ: "Joey-- I'm sorry."
Joey: "She's gone, isn't she? Don't be sorry. I know where she is. [HE SUDDENLY GOES OFF CAMERA. RUSS GOES TO THE DOOR AND LOOKS AFTER HIM]"
Russ: "Joey-- son, where are you going?" [BUT THERE IS NO ANSWER AS WE FADE OUT]"

Notes: Bill and Nora's scene, their last, was cut. They were discussing plans to bring Eileen's body home for burial.

DECEMBER 12, 1979 (EP. #3917)
Jeff revealed he'll dispose of Vivien after he makes Iris overdose on sleeping pills. He intended to push her off the terrace so the police will believe she slipped on the ice. Philip used the weather to remain at Cecile's to explain he'd become obsessed with having his own supply of money because his father always held it over his head. Brian confessed to Scott he thought Iris may have taken the ribbon. Scott investigated when June told him she can't find Jeff, whom Brian was distressed to learn owns a gun. Vivien volunteered that Brian calls Iris "baby" as Jeff dictated the letter, then he ordered Iris to retrieve her sleeping pills. Jeff was furious when he realized Iris had just downed some aspirin. Charlie came over to tell Clarice (who worried about Larry on patrol) that Eileen was gone. Larry and Bud kept their eyes peeled for thieves hoping to capitalize on the storm. Bothered to find Philip there, Jamie accused Cecile of encouraging Philip unintentionally or otherwise; a furious Cecile threw him out. Sally fought back tears when Morgan assured her Eileen forgave her for everything when she helped get Joey out of jail. A sad Morgan considered moving to Minneapolis to be with his parents. Sally was frightened when Rose phoned Morgan to reveal Joey was missing. Vivien struggled for Jeff's gun after she convinced Brian at the doorway that Iris had gone to bed. Rudy was uneasy when Brian reported to Scott that Vivien had known nothing about the ribbon. Sally told Rose and Angie that Joey may have gone to the hill that overlooked the city. Rose gave Dennis directions to the hill when he phoned and learned Sally rushed off there. Vivien dropping the first glass of water didn't stop Jeff from forcing Iris to swallow a few pills. Vivien hung up quickly when Rudy phoned to ask why she'd lied to Brian. June was crushed when Scott informed her that Jeff's NY driver recently bought a house in Tahiti despite having had money troubles. Iris agreed to be more cooperative, but Jeff stopped her from downing all the pills at once as she'd just get sick.

Bud: (Intro Line) "Hey, Larry, slow down."

Iris: "I have a hard time swallowing pills."
Jeff: "Good, maybe you'll choke on them and save me a lot of trouble."

DECEMBER 13, 1979 (EP. #3918)
Rudy filled Brian and Scott in on the ribbon, then they all tried to convince a skeptical June of Jeff's obvious guilt. The dispatcher ordered Bud and Larry to the Bayview Towers. June promised no more outbursts if Scott allowed her to stay. No one answered when Brian phoned Iris's suite. Rachel told Mitch that Louise's protectiveness doesn't irritate her. Mac thought Janice irrational to be so agitated about the storm. Willis agreed to use Gwen's money to build their dream house by the bay. Willis disbelieved her assertion that Janice was trying to control him. Bud, Marlowe, Scott, and Brian discussed ways to storm the suite and bring Jeff down. Sally ran into Dennis on the path. Mitch wasn't interested in Rachel's ideas to help him pass the time since they didn't involve her. Sally and Dennis found Joey's snow-covered body. Brian came to fill in Mac and Janice. Rudy described the air conditioning vents when Larry thought they were a means to access the suite. Larry was startled to have his slimness pointed out when both Bud and Mac were too broad in the shoulders to enter the vent.

Notes: The Cory mansion has five fireplaces, and is located in the north end of town.

DECEMBER 14, 1979 (EP. #3919)
Vivien was brave all of a sudden as Jeff tried to force Iris to swallow some more pills. Scott shot down Brian and Mac's desperate ideas to storm the apartment. Bud outfitted Larry with a gun and an earphone. Dr. Fielding worked over Joey. Russ allowed Sally to see Joey. Joey's eyes flickered open, but he turned away when he recognized Sally. Kit told Dennis that Joey had seemed oblivious to her when she'd looked after him during his vigil. Larry squirmed through the vent. As Jeff fed a groggy Iris more pills, Vivien remembered they were placebos. Clarice fretted to Charlie that Larry hadn't phoned in, then Bud's wife Hazel dropped in to reveal Larry was in the middle of a felony. Charlie applauded silently after Clarice hotly told Blaine she was sick of her snide cracks and of catering to her when what she really needs is a kick in the rear end. Dennis comforted Rose, then Russ warned her Joey's heart might stop as it warms up. Sally was touched when Jim and Liz arrived to take care of her. Jeff almost caught Vivien whispering to Iris that the pills were phoney. The men worried about Larry's narrow range of fire. Rose murmured soothingly to Joey, whose heart began to beat irregularly. Jeff picked up a limp Iris to carry her to bed, then threatened to brain a terrified Vivien if she didn't come to the terrace.

Hazel: (Intro Line, over the phone to Clarice) "Hello?"

DECEMBER 17, 1979 (EP. #3920)
A seemingly unconscious Iris suddenly opened her eyes. Janice was filled in after joining the group in Kirk's suite, then was unnerved when June wailed of loving men who were no good. Rachel and Mitch were vague when each tried to plumb the other's depths. Charlie was grateful when Hazel came over to set Clarice's mind at rest. Hazel, impressed when Clarice said she'd dated Jeff, showed off her beautifully manicured nails. Jeff put down the gun to grapple with Vivien. Iris picked up the gun and tried to shoot him, but the safety was on. A contrite Blaine made up with Clarice. Charlie thought Hazel one jazzy-looking lady, whom Ada remembered from a Christmas party she went to with Gil. Janice phoned to tell Willis about Jeff, then Gwen approved when he refused to drive over to check on Amanda for Mac's sake. Iris pretended to faint, but Jeff still dragged Vivien to the terrace. Iris ran for the door after seeing Larry's face in the vent. Vivien shielded Iris as Jeff and Larry exchanged shots. Rudy rushed to Vivien as Mac and Brian went to Iris. Scott restrained June as the medics took Jeff away. Iris thought Larry should be made captain. Clarice fed Larry (who was upset at shooting someone for the first time). Bud gave the cold shoulder to Hazel, who befriended Blaine after realizing she had a similar taste for the rich life. Rachel protested when Mitch kissed her on the neck.

Jeff: (Exit Line) "Okay, Vivien, I've had enough interference from you--"

DECEMBER 18, 1979 (EP. #3921)
Rachel and Mitch were both amused when Mac and Janice arrived before breakfast. Linda showed Kit how to care for Joey. Russ warned Rose that Joey might have pneumonia. A crafty Rachel maneuvered to get Mitch to drive Janice into town. Jamie admitted to Rachel he'd acted like a heel with Cecile. Mitch told Janice that Mac has already given her everything she wants from him. Jim came over to help take care of Sally, then Liz was detained on the phone filling Pat in. Rachel and Jamie rushed toward him when Mac clutched his chest and keeled forward. Kevin worried when Russ revealed Pat would be staying with Reena. Over the phone, Russ instructed Rachel on administering CPR to Mac. Pat was taken aback when Reena assumed she knew Kevin intimately. Striker greeted Pat with a bear hug, then she looked on in amazement as he poured himself a shot of bourbon for breakfast. Janice ordered Liz to find Willis an office near Mac's. Rose thanked Kit for being such a good nurse to Joey, who worried he may have been rotten to her. Janice snapped at Rachel after telling Kevin that Mac has been under a lot of strain. Striker told Reena that Pat didn't seem the kind of woman who would fall for Kevin. Kevin warned Reena not to do anything to upset Pat. Janice's eyes widened with a terrible thought after Kevin reported Mac suffered a bout of food poisoning from the chicken that had sat around for hours in the suite last night.

Janice: "You just rest, sweetheart, I'm here. [HE CLOSES HIS EYES. WE TAKE JANICE AND KEVIN'S VOICE ECHOES, AGAIN]"
Kevin: "[VO] Poisoning... poisoning... poisoning... poisoning... [AND WE FADE OUT]"

DECEMBER 19, 1979 (EP. #3922)
Iris downplayed it when Vivien told Tracy that Brian had spent the night in Tracy's room. Gwen was amused to find Willis fielding phone calls expertly as he filled in at Mac's desk. Dennis came to see if Iris was all right, then was certain she was meddling again after finding her with Philip. Hazel invited the Ewings to a party. Ada was suspicious to find Hazel and Blaine with their heads together. Liz told Iris about Mac's illness. Iris said she was a changed woman, but was chagrined when Brian noticed a familiar tone as she mentioned Philip. June informed Iris that Jeff died a few minutes ago without ever regaining consciousness. Iris thought June deranged to think she could have changed Jeff. Ada told Clarice that Hazel used to make her nervous but she can't remember why. Willis described to Tracy how arduous it was running a publishing company, and Gwen was perturbed to learn Tracy might become staff photographer. The Ewings, along with Joanne Kreuger, Bob, Jerry, Denny, Brett, Harve, and Trish, enjoyed the Parkers' party. Clarice and Larry whispered about how Blaine seemed to be getting along with Jerry. Hazel was annoyed that people began leaving after Bud got a call to come back down to the station. Blaine told Larry she was swearing off policemen despite finding Jerry and Bob cute. Clarice and Larry wondered why Bud seemed unhappy with Hazel. Cecile slapped Philip when he kissed her, but he just grinned and took it as a sign she was aroused. Dennis was unconvinced when Cecile insisted she didn't have a vestige of feeling for Philip. Hazel assured her mystery caller there was no way Bud could be on to her.

Jerry: (Intro Line, Michael Garfield) "See how rough we've got it? Just when you start to have a little fun, you get a call from the station."
Blaine: "I feel real sorry for you."
Jerry: "Yeah, I can tell."

June: (Exit Line) "[SHE STARTS TO GO, THEN TURNS BACK. WITH SUDDEN VEHEMENCE:] I don't care how bad Jeff was-- I still wish he were alive and free, and that you were in jail for Kirk's murder. [SHE BEGINS TO SOB. SHE TURNS, AND RUNS OUT, AS IRIS SITS DOWN SLOWLY, SHAKEN. FADE OUT]"

DECEMBER 20, 1979 (EP. #3923)
Rachel insisted that Mitch had almost been a perfect gentleman, but Ada knew she was stringing Mitch along to get the goods on Janice. Janice was terribly conflicted as she stroked Mac's face. Ada thought Kevin a little bashful when Russ introduced them. Mac claimed he didn't object when Rachel admitted she liked Mitch. Jamie wondered why Cecile was so warm to him. Pat told Russ she would be home for the holidays but would have to return to Houston afterwards. Kevin admitted he wasn't used to a woman like Pat who wasn't sexually aggressive. Tracy and Rachel renewed their acquaintance. Rose told Joey that Angie was considering leaving to get a fresh start and that Morgan took Eileen back to Minneapolis. Joey admitted it was what Eileen would want him to do when Dennis begged him to forgive Sally. A helpful Kit described the East Valley Terrace building for Cecile, who realized Kit recognized her. Janice welcomed Tracy aboard as photographer. In agony watching Mitch chase Rachel while she couldn't be with him herself, Janice told him they needed a solution that won't involve Mac walking out on her. A glamorous party was in full swing at Reena's, where the women were chic and the men ran a little on the tall side. Herb Law and Stewart vied to bring Pat champagne. Reena dragged Billy off to dance when the orchestra struck up a Spanish dance. Striker let Pat know he intended to get Kevin back for Reena if she wants him to, then, not mincing words, let her know he finds her desirable. Joey's mind was too much on Eileen to be interested in chatting with Kit. Philip explained to Dennis he was seeking Cecile's forgiveness. Reena asked Striker to delay Pat's next visit so she could have a little time with Kevin.

Notes: Rachel's art series, "Animal Spirits."

DECEMBER 21, 1979 (EP. #3924)
Iris told Brian she and Vivien would be spending the holidays in Palm Beach with Helen Stanton. As they checked out a new apartment, Jamie was puzzled by Cecile's anger at his affectionate attitude. During Hazel's auxiliary meeting (of cops' wives), Joanne and Becky sung Jerry's praises to Blaine. Tracy agreed to pretend to show an interest in Philip when Iris offered to get her camera out of hock. Vivien was overwhelmed when Iris let her remain in town to spend the holidays with Rudy. Bud decline to open up to Larry. Jerry told Blaine abut working in the narcotics department. Tracy tried to cover her discomfort as she assured Jamie Philip wouldn't wait till Cecile's 35 and her inheritance rolls in. Kit tried to give a teary Cecile some useful advice. Tracy warned she'd blow the whistle on Philip if she learns he has an ulterior motive. Brian declined Iris's offer to reconcile since he couldn't bring himself to trust her. Ada worried to Charlie about Clarice working for Mitch. Larry told Blaine and Clarice he was moody because someone had tipped off the highjackers about the bust. Jamie and Cecile made up, but she wanted to postpone the wedding without explanation.

Iris: "I'll have half a cup of coffee with Mrs. De Witt."
Vivien: "A demi-tasse!"
Iris: "No, just half a cup of coffee. [VIVIEN EXITS TO KITCHEN, TRYING TO WORK OUT THE DIFFERENCE]"

DECEMBER 24, 1979 (EP. #3925)
Jamie thought Rachel was dragging Iris into it from left field to think Iris engineered Philip's arrival in Bay City. Liz approved when Dennis visited with Sally. Joey was bothered when Kit praised Sally's courage. Mac assured an emotional Liz he intended to live forever. Cecile and Kit decided to be friends. Russ wouldn't let Kevin back out of attending Pat's party. Rachel told Cecile she supports her decision. Liz, Pat, Janice, Tracy, Willis, and Gwen attended Mac's office party. Rachel realized talking to Philip was a waste of time. Sally was radiant when Joey forgave her to forget the bad stuff in his life. Mac read "The Night Before Christmas" to Amanda. Rachel's eyes filled with tears as Ada and Charlie put presents under the tree. Sally, Liz, and Jim took turns speaking to Alice over the phone, then Pat, Russ, and Kevin spoke to Reena. Brian was delighted when Dennis and Cecile spent the evening with him. Pat was amused and Kevin puzzled when she thwarted his attempts to take her in his arms. Russ was amused that the nurses caroling cheered up a glum Kevin.

Tracy: "I'm really looking forward to going to Texas with you next week."
Pat: "It's another world down there."

Closing announcement: "This is Bill Wolff speaking-- We of Another World would like to wish you and yours a very merry Christmas and best wishes for the new year."

DECEMBER 25, 1979: Pre-empted for Holiday Programming.

DECEMBER 26, 1979 (EP. #3926)
Mac told Rachel not to shift the blame for Cecile's decision to Iris. Mitch told Mac that the Brava staff was welcome to his disco opening party. Gwen told Willis that Laverty Brothers has gone into receivership and will have a liquidation sale of all his construction equipment. Brian thought Rachel's suspicions of Iris far-fetched, even though Rachel had completely guessed Iris's plans. Cecile softened when Philip said he was sincerely sorry about her troubles with Jamie. Pat told Janice that Striker's wife lives in Europe and is unavailable for interviews. Janice offered Pat her position as Editor-in-Chief so she and Mac can have more free time. Russ suggested to Kevin that Gwen design the new post-cardiac care unit. Russ agreed when Pat said she's going to heed Striker's warning to stay out of a sticky situation. Cecile assured Jamie she wasn't interested in spending time with other men. Reena and Striker decided they needed to see how Kevin and Pat interacted. Janice admitted to Mitch she'd liked the idea that Mac may have died, and that she'd killed Howard by withholding his pills. Janice pleaded with him to make her stop the nightmare with Howard from happening again by being with her and giving up Rachel. Tracy was suspicious of his motives when Philip told her he would be working as a ski instructor. Everyone complimented Mitch on the disco. Cecile and Jamie resolved to have fun despite catching Philip dancing with Tracy. Janice unhappily danced with Mac as Rachel and Mitch danced together. Pat thought Kevin arrogant for announcing they can be together now that his divorce was being worked out. Cecile forced herself to kiss Jamie when he worried she was falling in love with Philip again.

Janice: (To Mitch) "I'm thinking real seriously about going to hell for you."

DECEMBER 27, 1979 (EP. #3927)
Rose invited Kit over to supper to repay her kindness to Joey. Ada supplied a definition to Clarice when Larry said he was off to set up a phoney stake-out. Gwen offered to take her fees in pizzas for providing some sketches for Rose's restaurant. Blaine agreed to go disco dancing, but warned Jerry she wasn't interested in the lifestyle a cop could give her. Joey told Kit he hasn't had a job in a long time but was hoping to land a construction position. Gwen thought she might be getting soft-hearted to agree to design the unit for Kevin and Russ for not even a stipend. Ada agreed when Charlie asked her to move their wedding date up. Blaine realized Sally's changed to be so interested in nursing, but wasn't keen on finding a job herself. Blaine heard Hazel and Bud arguing violently. Later, Hazel phoned to tip someone off about a drug bust. Angie told Willis she'd come to terms with their relationship, even claiming any feeling she ever had for him was gone. Bud told Larry there might be an informant on the force. Gwen revealed she's buying back all the old equipment and will reform a new company under the old name of Frame Enterprises, but Willis told her to choose a new name as Steve was dead and it wasn't healthy to cling to the past. Kit (already unhappy with the memories the Italian food evoked) was uncomfortable when the Perrini's asked about her family. Blaine was suspicious after Hazel made excuses to leave after Blaine revealed the stake-out tonight was a phoney to flush out a leak. Hazel phoned to say she might have found her replacement.

DECEMBER 28, 1979 (EP. #3928)
Philip declined Iris's idea to tear up the contract, insisting he'd never blackmail her. Blaine told Bud she hadn't told anyone about the phoney stake-out. Mac and Janice told Iris that they were letting Pat and Willis take over much of their responsibilities. Hazel was relived when Blaine said she hadn't told Bud she mentioned police details to her. Cecile wanted to believe him when Philip said he was turning to honest labor to earn a living. Brian realized Iris feigned surprise about Cecile's wedding postponement. Mac was angry when Janice thought Gwen was stabbing Willis in the back by establishing her own construction company. Gwen hired Dennis. Blaine accepted a date with Jerry, but told Hazel she wasn't interested in marrying him. Hazel mysteriously advised leading Jerry on despite his small salary. Ada complained to Mac about Rachel's involvement with Mitch. Pat told Janice there seems to be a mystery about Reena's parents, who separated when she was about 8. Janice was fascinated when Pat described a murder mystery in which a woman poisons her husband. Iris was delighted that Janice disliked Gwen as much as Rachel. Iris was dismayed when Dennis told her Gwen wants him to run Frame Construction for her. The Hobson's and Parker's complimented Larry on his commendation. Janice crept into Pat's office to retrieve the book and rejection letter.

Gwen: "Now I am. President and chief operating officer of the Frame Construction Company. FCC. Kind of cute, don't you think?"

Pat: "Yes, but I'm down to the last one, a murder mystery called "Harry Must Die."
Janice: "Why must Harry die?"
Pat: "Unfortunately, it's so poorly written, no one will care."

Notes: According to this episode, Striker's father named him that since he struck oil the day he was born. "Striker" even appears on his birth certificate. This contradicts an earlier statement that Striker's real first name was John.

DECEMBER 31, 1979 (EP. #3929)
Janice read the book in a distressed and frightened manner. Janice told Pat that Mrs. Bellman had been politically active. Pat shrugged to find she must have miscounted the rejected manuscripts. To avoid the fuss, Ada told Charlie they should spring a wedding on their family on Thursday. Rachel laughed when Clarice pointed out they'll be step-sisters. Kevin theorized to Pat that Victoria lost the fight with Reena over Striker. Rachel and Mitch hung the cardboard model of the mobile, then she let him kiss her when she spied Janice at the entrance. Kevin agreed to give Gwen's new company the construction job in exchange for free plans. Rachel promised Ada a simple wedding at the mansion. Striker admired Reena for conniving to book every decent hotel room to force Kevin to stay at their house. Brian declined to move back into Iris's once Mac and Janice take possession of the house, as Ted's lease was still in effect. Iris agreed to accompany Mac to the disco to see the man Rachel 's been fooling around with. Janice begged Mitch to read the book as it's convinced her it would be too horrible to poison Mac, but admitted he was right to think she just wanted him to give her the go-ahead. Janice was upset that Mac found the rejection letter. Liz was sure Pat strengthened Kevin's resolve to get a divorce. Sally and Dennis decided to go to the disco to celebrate their new jobs. Iris wasn't pleased to see Dennis and that dreadful Sally at the disco. Rachel introduced a surly Mitch to her date, Scott. Mac dragged Janice, Iris, and Brian to join him on the dance floor. Janice sagged slightly when Mitch (having read the book) told her to "do it."

Mac: "But I don't believe you've met my daughter. Iris Bancroft. Mitchell Blake."
Mitch: "It's a pleasure."
Iris: "I've looked forward to meeting you, Mr. Blake."
Mitch: "I hope you're not disappointed."
Iris: "Not at all."
