Carl was introduced in December of 1983 as Felicia's secret lover from abroad. They had met in Paris. Their affair, as depicted on the show, was short-lived. Neither had any real affection for the other. At the time, Carl was too obsessed with gaining revenge on Mac Cory to devote his affections to Felicia.
Later on both became friends due to their closeness to Rachel.
