SYNOPSES: 1972

Daily Synopses: January - June / July - December

JULY 3, 1972 (EP. #2037)
John didn't want to talk about Pat's drinking with Alice. Alice unburdened herself to John, who advised her not to put a wedge between her and Steve this early in their marriage. Alice was annoyed when John defended Steve's actions, then refused to stay at his house when she realized John had known all along. Gerald denied it when Ted accused him of encouraging Rachel to let Steve see Jamie so he could curry some favor with Steve. Gerald reminded him that Rachel was young and pretty when Ted was sure Rachel would come back to him. Ted apologized to Cindy for how his troubles were affecting her. Cindy gave Ted cause for thought about Steve's need to see his son, and advised him to let them get together if the alternative was marriage trouble for both couples. Alice cried to Jim about how angry and hurt she was about all the lies Steve told her, and he agreed she could stay in her old room. Steve phoned, but could only get Jim to convey his love to Alice.

JULY 4, 1972 (EP. #2038)
A disheveled Pat told John she had no memory of Alice putting her to bed. John made to leave when Pat said she doesn't care about the state of the house if he won't come home to it. He hesitated, then sat down next to her on the couch when she started to cry. He offered to cancel a client dinner so they could talk, then patted her hand instead of kissing her goodbye. On her way to Mrs. Jorgenson's, Belle dropped in to have Ada fill her in on what was troubling Ted and Rachel. Belle lamented that Ted's life has blown up. Bernice accused John of not caring about her when he tried to explain he felt an obligation to Pat and the twins even though there was never a time when he didn't wish he was with Bernice. Irritated that John broke their date tonight, Bernice gladly accepted Mark's dinner invite. Jim was happy to find Pat in good spirits, and asked her to speak to Alice. John promised they'd work it out when Pat agreed to stop drinking. Mark was pleased when Bernice asked him to have dinner in rather than going out.

JULY 5, 1972 (EP. #2039)
Gerald groused when Ray insisted on taking the night off. Gerald assured Steve he'd let him know where Rachel was if he knew, then suggested Steve call back his loan, take over the restaurant, and let Gerald manage it. But Steve refused to be dragged into his personal arguments with Ted. Alice hurried out when Stuart wanted to give her a check-up and Lenore wanted to talk to her about Steve. Lenore maintained it made it very difficult to work for Stuart when he persisted in asking her out. Ray met Gloria, Peggy's mother, when he came to pick her up. Gloria boasted that Peggy was putting her baby sister Linda through nursing school, then disapproved when a forthright Ray admitted he'd been in prison. Lenore told Alice she may not make it easy for Steve to talk to her about Jamie because he senses she doesn't approve. Alice agreed to think about meeting with Steve.

Gloria: "Dick Nolan was a very good man."
Ray: "I'm sure he was."
Gloria: "Linda will be coming home for dinner tonight so I'd better check what's on the stove. Please excuse me, Mr. Scott."
Ray: "Of course."

Notes: First appearance of Rosetta LeNoire as Gloria Metcalf.

JULY 6, 1972 (EP. #2040)
John was irritated when a happy Mark implied dinner was only the beginning for him and Bernice last night. John told Steve that his deceits about Jamie might be making Alice wonder if he's lying about his feelings for Rachel. Bernice griped that she does not want to go without looking across the room at John when Steve wanted her to come back to work at his office, but John felt it might be wiser if they weren't working in the same office. Since she needed the money, Lenore told Pat she had to keep working for Stuart though she found his persistence distasteful. Cindy didn't approve of Belle talking to Russ about Ted and Rachel. John felt Steve might find a place for her when Pat told him Lenore has come to dread going into the office to work for Stuart. Bernice phoned Mark after John refused to leave Pat to come see her.

JULY 7, 1972 (EP. #2041)
Jim read Alice Mary's letter about Ricky growing up by leaps and bounds. Lenore phoned to browbeat Alice into agreeing to meet Steve at her house. When Ted came to see Jim, he and Alice apologized to each other for the troubles they were having. Jim told Ted the only way to prevent Ada from using her savings to bail him out was to get Steve to change his mind. Steve and John argued to convince Bernice to become Project Assistant on the new housing development that would boast individual styles for each house. When Bernice insisted John needed her in the office, John suggested Lenore as she had a lot of administrative experience running the city's charity drives. Bernice promised not to argue about his feelings for Pat if John was willing to keep things going between them as they have been. Lenore threatened to quit if Stuart continued to talk to her about her personal life. Stuart admitted to Russ he needed to get over his one-sided feelings for Lenore. Lenore managed to make herself scarce so Steve could talk to Alice alone. Steve begged Alice to help him understand himself when she maintained she feared never being able to understand him.

JULY 10, 1972 (EP. #2042)
Alice told Steve she would have accepted it if he'd insisted on seeing Jamie, and claimed she can accept Jamie as his son despite how it reminds her he had a child with Rachel. Ashamed of abandoning his own family, Steve couldn't bring himself to turn his back on anyone again. Ted felt bad when Cindy worried about him. Peggy phoned Ted to say the ex-con organization wouldn't be able to come up with enough money to bail him out. A depressed Ted left quickly, but when Cindy tried to follow him to the door, she suddenly felt faint. Russ discouraged Cindy from trying to live Ted's life for him. Steve agreed to talk to Ted about a resolution when Alice admitted she sympathized with Ted. Steve let Lenore know he has a job she might be interested in.

JULY 11, 1972 (EP. #2043)
Ted asked Ada to convey his love to Rachel. Gil arrived to talk to Ada about Ted, discouraging her from putting money into the restaurant. Ada promised to contact him if Ted exhibits danger signals. Ray promised Steve he'd have Ted get in touch with him. Gerald wasn't much help when Steve inquired about Rachel's whereabouts. Bernice played up to Mark to get John jealous. John was pleased when Steve revealed he intends to honor Alice's request he lay off Ted. Bernice didn't do back flips when John said he may or may not be able to wrangle a visit tonight. Ada fumed that Steve was using Jamie as an object to bargain about. Gerald wouldn't let Ted in on what he had discussed with Steve.

'ACT I. SAME SET, A LITTLE LATER. ADA SHUTS OFF THE VACUUM CLEANER, UNPLUGS IT AND IS STARTING TO PUT IT AWAY WHEN THE DOORBELL RINGS AGAIN. SHE GOES TO IT AND OPENS IT TO BILL [sic] McGOWAN.'
Gil: "Mrs. Downs?"
Ada: "That's right."
Gil: "I'm Gil McGowan, Ted Clark's new parole officer."
Ada: "Oh, I've heard about you. Come on in."
Gil: "Thanks, but am I interrupting you...?"
Ada: "No, I was just doing some cleaning. Excuse the way the place looks."
Gil: "Looks fine to me, Mrs. Downs."

JULY 12, 1972 (EP. #2044)
Jim watched as Pat guided the twins in returning their toys to the toy box. Tired of being second fiddle to Pat, Bernice let John know she will not tie herself down any longer to a man who is not free. Mark was happy to hear Bernice had turned down John's request to work late to be able to keep her date with him. Lenore begged Stuart to stop asking her out. Stuart tried to make her feel guilty when she invited Cindy over for supper to make wedding plans. Jim told Pat that Mary reports Liz is quieter and more settled now that she has a less active social life. After Pat sadly wondered to Jim why people change, she was thrilled when John returned home unexpectedly. After he vowed to make her happy, Bernice responded to Mark's kisses. Lenore and Cindy leafed through wedding magazines to find a suitable gown. Cindy dismissed it when Lenore found her resting her eyes.

Stuart: "Lenore?" [SHE TURNS] "Does it really bother you so much to know that a man finds you attractive?" [LENORE LOOKS AT HIM, AND THEN QUICKLY EXITS. FADE OUT]

JULY 13, 1972 (EP. #2045)
Alice confided in Jim she worries that Steve wants to have his own way about everything. Steve let Ted know that he no longer has to worry about repaying the loan right away. When Steve wanted permission to see Jamie, Ted worried that Jamie would learn Steve was his father, thus finding out that his mother was never married to his father. Ted agreed to have an official meeting with John and Peggy present as soon as Rachel returns. Lenore quit when Stuart accused her of suffocating Wally with the love she's afraid to give to a man. A distraught Lenore walked up as Steve was detailing his new reasonable attitude to Alice. Steve offered Lenore a job again. Stuart admitted to Alice he made a first-class idiot out of himself, and Alice envied Lenore being able to plan her life without a man in it. Jim advised Steve to trust Alice to accept the truth about him. Alice was nervous to come home to find Jim had cooked Steve dinner, but agreed to have dinner with Steve tomorrow night.

JULY 14, 1972 (EP. #2046)
Lenore was grateful when Steve hired her to work on the housing project. When John tried to convince him Bernice wanted to come back to his office, Steve preferred keeping her at the law office so she can help cut down John's workload. Alice was glad when Pat reported things were much better with John. John ordered him to discuss it with Alice when Steve wanted to hire a detective to trace Rachel. Gerald arrived and met John. Steve left the room after informing Gerald he should discuss his desire to become the Fireside Inn's manager with John. John told Gerald he was wasting everybody's time by discussing anything but Jamie with Steve. Steve found it hard to stick to impersonal subjects as he dined with Alice. Bernice let Steve know he misunderstood John if he thought she wanted to come back to Frame Enterprises. Alice gave Steve permission to trace where Rachel took Jamie.

JULY 17, 1972 (EP. #2047)
Alice came home suitcase in hand to find Steve mopping up the coffee he'd spilled on his business papers. Steve kissed Alice happily after she promised to never leave him again. Lenore was happy for him when Steve told her Alice had come home. Steve described the development project as a self-contained community on waterfront acreage near the State Park, but Lenore wasn't happy she would be working with Bernice. Bernice felt that John was trying to find a way to get rid of her, but John claimed he'd just been trying to separate her from Mark. Bernice asked Mark to lunch at her apartment after informing John he can't demand exclusive rights to her if she can't have the same of him. Stuart was irritated with his new secretary, Kay. When Alice told Stuart that Lenore had found a new job, he asked her to pass along his apologies for his behavior. Steve was grateful when Gerald revealed he's just learned Rachel was at the Totem Pole Lodge up at Bear Lake. Steve asked Alice if it would be all right if he stopped off to see Jamie on his way to Washington.

JULY 18, 1972 (EP. #2048)
Gerald told a worried Ada that Rachel can take care of herself. Ada advised Ted to speak with Gil. Ted offered Ray some time off to find out if Peggy's interested in him. Steve told Ada that Gerald has been sending Rachel money. John complained to Steve about Mark and Bernice mooning around the office. As Pat served John and Jim drinks on the terrace, Bernice phoned to accuse John of trying to dominate her life. Ada accused Gerald of playing games, but he refused to divulge Rachel's whereabouts.

Gil: (Richard Dysart, Exit Line) (To Ada in her living room about looking after Ted Clark) "Can I count on you for that?"

Notes: Last appearance of Richard Dysart as Gil McGowan.

JULY 19, 1972 (EP. #2049)
Robert Delaney told Pamela he needed to speak with Steve. Robert met Lenore, then told Steve his wife and son were killed in an automobile accident last week in Chicago. Robert requested a job so he won't have time to think about anything else. Stuart begged Cindy to let Lenore know she can come back under any conditions she wants. Steve brought Robert home to meet Alice. Steve let Lenore know Robert has some personal difficulties he doesn't want to talk about. Steve filled Alice in on Robert's loss, then she allowed him to visit Jamie even though Rachel will be present.

Pamela: "Good morning."
Robert: (Re-introduction Line, 1972) "Hello. Is Mr. Frame in?"

Steve: "I'll never be too busy to see you, Robert. Oh, Lenore, I'd like you to meet Robert Delaney... Lenore Curtin..."
Robert: "Hello--"
Lenore: "Hello, Mr. Delaney -- your name sounds familiar."
Steve: "Robert designed the house I built for Alice."
Lenore: "Of course, that's it. Well, I'm very happy to meet you. That house is something very special."
Robert: "Thank you, but it wasn't such a difficult assignment. Steve knew exactly what he wanted."

Notes: Reappearance of Nicolas Coster as Robert Delaney. Robert was permanently transferred to AW as of this episode after appearing regularly on Somerset.

JULY 20, 1972 (EP. #2050)
Ada told Alice that she needed Steve to tell her where Rachel was. Alice insisted she won't force her attitude on anyone when Ada wanted to know what they'll tell Jamie when he gets curious about Steve's visits. Ted unloaded his troubles onto Cindy, who made excuses when she felt faint. Ray came for dinner and met Peggy's sister, Linda, almost a full-fledged nurse. Gloria said she worried about Linda wanting to leave Bay City. Alice told Jim, Russ, and Cindy that she and Steve will be taking a trip to St. Croix after he stops off to see Jamie on his way to Washington.

'METCALF LIVING ROOM, THAT EVENING. LINDA METCALF IS STUDYING ON THE SOFA. THE DOORBELL RINGS. SHE CALLS TOWARD THE KITCHEN.'
Linda: (Introduction Line) "Peggy! Your date's here."

Peggy: [TO RAY] "Linda's the noisy one of us two."
Linda: "I'm not noisy, I'm what's called vivacious." [PEGGY AND RAY LAUGH]

Notes: First appearance of Vera Moore as Linda Metcalf.

JULY 21, 1972 (EP. #2051)
Steve dropped by Rachel's hotel room. As they settled into their new office, Robert turned away abruptly when Lenore placed a photo of Walter Jr. on her desk. Though he had known Walter and Wayne, Robert told Lenore he wouldn't pursue the subject. John disapproved when Pat invited Bernice over to dinner with Mark. Gil advised Ted to get the money matters settled with Steve as soon as possible. Rachel said one reason she left town was because everyone was trying to manage her life. She agreed to let Steve go to the pool to see Jamie only if she comes along.

Rachel: (Victoria Wyndham, Introduction Line) [INSIDE] "Who is it?"
Steve: "Why don't you open the door and find out."
Rachel: [OPENING THE DOOR] "Steve!"
Steve: "Hello, Rachel."
Rachel: "What are you doing here?"
Steve: "I'm on my way to Washington, and I stopped by to see Jamie."

Gil: (Charles Durning, Introduction Line) (To Ted) "Come on, sit down and make yourself comfortable."

Notes: First appearance of Victoria Wyndham as Rachel. First appearance of Charles Durning as Gil McGowan.

JULY 24, 1972 (EP. #2052)
Peggy was embarrassed when Linda phoned her at work. Bernice reminded John that she's only spending time with Mark when John is too busy for her. Robert was uncomfortable when Lenore spoke about her son. Peggy told Ted there was little she could do about Steve's insistence upon seeing Jamie. Ted offered to help Linda get on staff at Bay City General. Bernice welcomed Robert to the ship. Lenore coolly refused Bernice's offers to teach her the ropes. Pat envied Bernice her romantic lifestyle. John got rid of Bernice when he came home to find her lounging on his terrace, but Pat accused him of driving her off so Pat doesn't have any friends.

JULY 25, 1972 (EP. #2053)
Ada was glad when Rachel came home. Since Cindy seemed tired, Russ suggested enlisting Pat's help in planning the wedding. Russ told Ted he'd arrange an interview for Linda with Mrs. Hewitt. Rachel told Ada that if it comes to a choice between what's best for Jamie or Ted, she can't go along with Ted. Pat sipped her highball, brooded about the trap women all fall into, lamented she'd never become a career woman, and tried to advise Cindy so she wouldn't become a similarly bitter and disappointed woman. Rachel ran into Ted when she visited Gerald. Ted promised not to lose his temper anymore if Rachel took him back, but she needed a few days to decide.

JULY 26, 1972 (EP. #2054)
Gerald explained to Rachel he'd thought she would agree that Steve had a right to know where Jamie was since Steve pays his bills. Gerald fumed about being left out of the loop when Rachel informed him that Steve and Ted agreed to delay the loan repayment. Gerald advised her not to be so quick to tell Ted the truth about Steve. Peggy introduced Linda to Cindy and Alice. As Pat dropped a drink behind him, Jim phoned Alice to come see Pat before she leaves for her trip. Ted told Ray he was confident he and Rachel can work out their problems. Ted told Rachel he won't object to Steve's paying for things for Jamie as long as they keep a strict accounting so he'll be able to pay back every cent Steve spends on Jamie. A hostile Pat accused Alice of living the good life and not caring about anyone else. An upset Jim apologized to Alice, then tried to warn Pat she was wrecking her marriage, but she was sure John has found another woman.

JULY 27, 1972 (EP. #2055)
Lenore told Alice that Robert was easy to work with but a little distant. Alice asked Lenore to look in on Pat while she was away. When she realized she wasn't the problem, Lenore let Robert know she respected his privacy. On a picnic, Cindy and Russ discussed where they'll live after they have kids, then vowed to marry at the end of August, no matter what. Bernice told John that Lenore was rejecting her offers of help, but she felt it wouldn't do any good when he wanted to send Mark over to help Lenore. Though Bernice insisted she can be a very discreet woman, John said her pretending a friendship with Pat she didn't really feel put Pat in a humiliating situation. Pat hastily poured her highball on the ground and hid the glass behind a shrub when Lenore stopped by. Lenore said Robert was a refreshing change from Stuart. Lenore thought it puzzling when Pat said Bernice was befriending her.

JULY 28, 1972 (EP. #2056)
Jim happily welcomed Mary home, but she was sure Jim was keeping something from her. Jim revealed that Alice found out Steve had been seeing Jamie and Rachel behind her back. Mary promised to keep out of it, though she felt Steve should give up seeing Jamie because Rachel can't be trusted. Ada told Rachel to give Ted a chance to prove he loves her. Linda was pleased when Stuart agreed to take her on his staff. Russ and Cindy made plans to have dinner with his parents. Stuart asked Cindy to be remembered to Lenore. Jim and Mary agreed Pat was going through a very bad time. As they shopped for wedding gowns, Lenore told Cindy to see a doctor about her fainting spells, or she'll tell Russ.

Crawl: Empty bridal shop.

JULY 31, 1972 (EP. #2057)
Mary offered to look after the twins to encourage Pat to get out of the house. After Cindy surprised Russ with a fancy breakfast, they discussed the wonderful life they'll have. Bernice wanted to bring Pat and the twins along when Mark invited her on a picnic lunch. Bernice spoke to Mary over the phone, then decried married life to Mark. Pat admitted to Lenore she'd driven John away with her nagging. Lenore dismissed the notion of John seeing another woman, realizing from her own marriage that there are other explanations for a husband's weird behavior. Mary felt Pat wanted more attention at home, but John refused to discuss it since he's encouraged Pat to visit friends when he's not around but she prefers staying home, brooding, with a drink in her hand.

Pat: "I drink because it's the only way I can forget that my husband no longer finds me attractive."

AUGUST 1, 1972 (EP. #2058)
Rachel let Ada know she didn't appreciate her siding with Ted all the time. Ada filled Mary in on the upcoming legal meeting to decide Steve's visitation rights. Gerald disagreed when Rachel said she may have no choice but to settle for Ted. When Ted told Rachel that Gil made him realize how difficult an adjustment it was not only for an ex-con but for his family as well, she agreed he can move back. Rachel returned his embrace tolerantly, but with less conviction than Ted displayed. Ada and Jamie welcomed Ted when Rachel brought him home. Rachel complained to Ada she was still scrounging along while others have rich husbands and not a care in the world. Belle told Cindy that Ted's gone back to Rachel. Lenore came over to show them swatches, then badgered Cindy to make the doctor's appointment.

Ada: "There are more important things in the world than money."
Rachel: "Yeah? Like what?"
Ada: "Like love."
Rachel: "That's what you've been telling me ever since I was a kid."
Ada: "It's still true."
Rachel: "I'll believe it when I find it."

AUGUST 2, 1972 (EP. #2059)
Pat phoned to ask Bernice and Mark over to dinner. John thought it very risky when Bernice insisted she liked Pat and wanted Pat to trust her. When John considered finding some reason not to attend the dinner, Bernice reminded him being there was the only way to be sure nobody said anything to give them away. Robert declined Pat's invitation, then passed it along to Lenore, who also declined on learning Bernice would be there. Jim showed Pat his plans to build a playhouse for the twins, then conferred with Russ over wedding details. John told his dinner guests that his old partner Rafe Carter always spoke highly of Robert. Bernice changed the subject when John and Mark wondered what Walter's connection to Wayne had been. Lenore insisted to Russ that Cindy have a thorough check-up before the wedding.

AUGUST 3, 1972 (EP. #2060)
Rachel told Ada they may be able to work things out with Steve since Ted's been so reasonable. Peggy told Ray to give her mother time to come around. Ted told Peggy that the only sticky point will be whether Steve should see Jamie on a regular basis. Ada felt it would be a hard sell when Gil wanted to tell Rachel he's looking out for her welfare as well as Ted's. Rachel refused to discuss her personal situation with Gil. Gerald advised Rachel to get her own lawyer since Peggy's looking after Ted's interests, not hers. Russ told Belle that Dr. David Rogers from Boston will be taking over for Dr. Hecht as head of Cardiology. Cindy resisted when Russ wanted her to see a doctor.

Gerald: "Well, you come to me if things go wrong. I'm not going to let anyone ruin your life, or Jamie's either, you can count on that."
Rachel: "Thanks, Dad. You're the one person I know I can really trust."

AUGUST 4, 1972 (EP. #2061)
Cindy put on a brave act for Belle's sake when she doubled over in pain. Mary and Ada wondered whom they can ask to give a wedding reception for Russ and Cindy so that it will be on neutral ground, since Rachel and Ted would be there. Helen agreed to speak to Lenore when Mary wanted to have it at her house. Rachel and Cindy made amends. Ada thought it selfish when Rachel revealed her intention to skip the wedding reception altogether. Ted insisted to Rachel they both needed to attend the reception for Cindy's sake. Gerald suggested she say she's going along, but then pretend to be sick at the last minute. Cindy and Russ discussed their honeymoon plans with his parents. Cindy fainted as Russ poured her a drink.

AUGUST 7, 1972 (EP. #2062)
Jim and Mary were concerned as Russ ministered to Cindy. Cindy admitted she'd had previous fainting spells, but insisted she was fine. Helen offered to take care of all the arrangements when Lenore agreed the reception can be held at her house. Lenore told Helen that Cindy hasn't been feeling well. Gerald fumed when Ted wouldn't forgo watching Jamie act in a play to be there when the carpenters installed the new booths. After a call from a worried Belle, Ted learned from Jim that Russ took Cindy to the hospital. Cindy protested when David insisted she stay overnight for tests. Russ told Ted not to alarm Belle. Russ told David that he diagnosed Cindy with Murine Typhus several years ago.

David: (Introduction line) "Sit down, Cindy."

Notes: First appearance of Walter McGinn as Dr. David Rogers, Head of Cardiology at the hospital.

AUGUST 8, 1972 (EP. #2063)
Linda took blood from Cindy, who insisted to Russ she hadn't wanted to worry him about nothing. Pat told Russ about the time she found Cindy dozing on her terrace. Pat asked Bernice over for lunch. John sent Mark over to see about Lenore after Bernice complained Lenore kept refusing to let Bernice help her. Bernice made excuses for him when Pat pointed out John's sometimes suspicious behavior. Bernice thought it impossible when Pat felt there must be another woman. Robert confided he'd had a son who died when Lenore showed him toys she bought for Wally. Russ met Robert, then got Lenore to describe Cindy's fainting spells.

Notes: First appearance of Jason Gladstone as Wally Curtin.

AUGUST 9, 1972 (EP. #2064)
John wasn't pleased when Pat admitted that she'd had Bernice over for lunch. John assured Bernice he loved her and won't leave her, and she said she'll continue being friends with Pat to keep her from suspecting them by raving about Mark all the time. David and Linda ran tests on Cindy. Ted promised Cindy that things will work out for both of them. John told Peggy it was important that Rachel and Ted present the same argument. Peggy decided it was a good time to see Rachel when Linda told her Ted was at the hospital waiting for word on Cindy's tests. Gerald told Peggy he'd like to sit in on the meeting if the Inn will be discussed. Since he hadn't told her about Cindy's illness, Rachel begged Ted not to keep secrets from her.

AUGUST 10, 1972 (EP. #2065)
Russ promised Cindy their wedding will go through as planned. When all their tests came back as inconclusive, Russ and David questioned Belle about Cindy's early medical history. Belle said her late husband went to prison for embezzling money so he could pay for Ted's polio medical bills, then revealed Cindy had a lot of colds as a child. Pat brought Michael and Marianne over for a visit with Jim. Jim thought she'd be better off spending time with Lenore when Pat felt Bernice was the only person who listened to her without passing judgment. When Lenore said to consider her as a friend, Robert related how he'd said goodbye to Jessie and Robbie, then her brother Randy drove them off while he had to go to another appointment. Lenore assured Robert that the nightmares would stop after a while. Linda told Gloria there was no news on Cindy. A belligerent Pat felt Linda was purposely keeping her from seeing Cindy. A lost Pat cried on Russ's shoulder about having nowhere to go and no one to talk to.

Notes: Jim's role was originally written for Mary, so there was extensive rewriting to fit Jim into the scene instead.

AUGUST 11, 1972 (EP. #2066)
Cindy fussed to Russ about having to remain in hospital. Russ pumped Ted for information on Cindy's childhood colds. When Alice phoned Jim to let him know she was back home, she learned of Cindy's illness. Rachel and Steve let each other know that they were no longer keeping any secrets from their spouses. Bernice complained to Steve about Lenore's unfriendly attitude. Bernice tried to change his mind when Mark suspected Pat thought John might be having an affair. Cindy said she'd like both Alice and Linda to be her nurses. Russ fretted to Alice they still have no clue what was ailing Cindy.

AUGUST 14, 1972 (EP. #2067)
David informed Russ he suspected Cindy has a defective mitral valve, then told Alice not to alarm Cindy so they can accurately evaluate the test results. Steve asked Robert and Lenore to rough-out a brochure for contractors. Steve was miffed Rachel seemed to be resisting the meeting; she agreed to visitation but refused his request to tell Jamie the truth. Gerald warned Rachel she was handing over the one weapon she had (Jamie) to get what she wants out of life. Alice offered to help Cindy make wedding plans. Stuart was pleased to run into Lenore, who visited Cindy. Ted told Rachel he'd rather lose the restaurant than let Steve make Jamie miserable by telling him he's his natural father.

AUGUST 15, 1972 (EP. #2068)
Pat apologized to Alice for her ridiculous behavior, blaming it on John being in love with another woman that they haven't slept together for months. Alice warned her that jealousy can wreck a marriage. Russ put on a brave face for Cindy. Russ told Lenore that even though Cindy wasn't getting better, she should continue helping her plan the wedding. Lenore told Helen about Robert's loss, then he arrived for dinner. Robert told Lenore that Steve's first commission turned his life around. Lenore brought Walter Jr. down and let Robert hold him. Russ told Mary he refused to put out the hope in Cindy's eyes.

AUGUST 16, 1972 (EP. #2069)
When Pat wanted an explanation for their bedroom inactivity, John said he found it hard to be affectionate to someone who's always antagonistic. Both half-dressed at her apartment, John groused about the time Bernice spends with Mark, but she convinced him not to look for reasons not to trust her. Ada thanked Cindy for sitting with Jamie so she and Rachel could visit Ted in prison. Ada met Linda. Since Peggy was ill, Mark discussed the Inn with Steve. Steve phoned Pat when John was late for the meeting. John, who arrived after Ted and Rachel, apologized for the delay. Steve was agreeable when Ted insisted on making regular payments to pay him off ASAP. Everyone agreed on Steve taking care of the bills for Jamie's welfare and health. Steve didn't like it but felt he had to accept not being able to tell Jamie he was his father. Rachel proposed herself when she felt somebody should be there when Jamie sees Steve to ensure Steve doesn't reveal his paternity, but unhappily agreed to John's suggestion of Ada.

Bernice: "I love you, John, and I'm doing things I feel are deceitful, too, but I can't give you up. Not now."
John: [PUTTING HIS ARMS AROUND HER] "I don't want to give you up."
Bernice: "Then hold me tight, please." [HE DOES. THEY KISS]

Steve: "I told you I wanted to talk to you privately before the meeting."
John: "Something came up unexpectedly."

AUGUST 17, 1972 (EP. #2070)
A displeased Rachel refused to discuss the meeting with Ada. Ada didn't enthuse about her role when Ted told her the decision, since she felt Steve shouldn't see Jamie at all. Linda and David tried to soothe Cindy's fears. Gerald let Rachel know she played right into Alice's hands as it was obviously Alice who insisted Rachel not accompany Jamie on his visits with Steve, then said she didn't have to live up to an unfair agreement she made when her back was against the wall. Gloria admitted to Ray she didn't think Peggy should be involved with someone who has a prison record. Linda told Ray not to let her mother scare him off. Steve agreed to Ada's conditions on his twice-weekly visits, and also agreed not to shower Jamie with expensive gifts. Rachel complained to Ada about feeling shut out of her son's life.

Linda: "Dick was a lot of fun, but I was still a kid when he died. Peggy sure was crazy about him."

AUGUST 18, 1972 (EP. #2071)
Russ and Cindy talked about their wedding and honeymoon. Cindy asked Belle to recruit Lenore's help to ensure the wedding goes perfectly. David informed Russ that Cindy will die of Mitral Stenosis in a matter of weeks. John reminded a dissatisfied Bernice he'd never hid the fact he'd never leave Pat for her, but she was envious of what other women had. Bernice vowed to herself to find a way to make sure she and John will have a life together. Jim tried to assuage Mary's fears about Cindy. Bernice's phone call interrupted a quiet moment between Pat and John. Bernice apologized for being foolish, but insisted she was lonely and just needed to hear his voice. Russ fought back tears while promising Cindy they won't postpone their wedding.

AUGUST 21-22, 1972: Pre-empted due to Republican National Convention Sessions.

AUGUST 23, 1972 (EP. #2072)
Jim and Mary were speechless when Russ told them Cindy has only a few weeks left to live. Russ buried his face in his hands, insisting there will be no miracle, but vowed to have the wedding as planned the first week of September, in hospital. Cindy told Alice she can't wait to come down the aisle at St. Luke's to Russ standing at the altar. Rachel refused to let Gerald take over as manager of the Inn, since even though the Inn was in her name, they were only waiting until Ted can get the liquor license back in his own name. Gerald suggested the possibility of her marrying Steve, but she was only concerned with what Jamie would think of her should he find out she wasn't married to his father when he was born. Cindy was pleased Ted worked everything out with Steve. Ted thanked Alice for persuading Steve not to call in his loan. Russ told Alice they have a meeting with David tomorrow morning, then made a great effort of cheerfulness with Cindy.

AUGUST 24, 1972 (EP. #2073)
David, with Russ, told Ted, Alice, and Linda that Cindy has a very serious heart condition and has only a few weeks left to live. Russ, Ted, and Alice made arrangements to perform the wedding ceremony in Cindy's hospital room. Mary told Pat that Cindy had heart trouble, but hid the fact it was fatal. She took the drink out of Pat's hand and urged her to forget her troubles so she can make Russ's more bearable for him. Pat decided to dress up and surprise John at his office at the exact moment he and Bernice were embracing on her couch. Mark told Pat that both John and Bernice were out working. Bernice brought up Mark's vacation invite just to enjoy John's jealous reaction, but then realized if she's not careful she'll lose him. Mark let it slip to Pat that even Steve has had trouble tracking John down. A drunk Pat cried and accused John of seeing another woman, but he insisted she was the only person in the world he really cared about.

AUGUST 25, 1972 (EP. #2074)
Concerned about Russ, Alice told Steve she'd like to invite him over for dinner. Stuart dropped in to try to cheer Cindy up, then Alice let him know about the hospital wedding. Ada forbade Rachel from being home when Steve brought Jamie back, but Rachel had second thoughts about an agreement that kept her from seeing her own son when she wanted to. Steve introduced Ada and Robert, who realized they have Sam in common. Lenore watched as Robert lifted Jamie up and settled him on a stool before the draftsman's table and showed him a blueprint, then she invited him to a quiet dinner where he can spend time with her own son. Rachel wondered why Ted seemed distracted. An impatient Rachel phoned Alice, then was displeased when Ada brought Jamie home. Ted told Rachel and Ada that Cindy was going to die.

Notes: Last appearance of Charles Siebert as Dr. Stuart Philbin.

AUGUST 28, 1972 (EP. #2075)
Lenore explained to Helen she was simply doing a good deed by being friendly with Robert. Russ asked Lenore to go ahead with the wedding plans she's started even though Cindy's going to die. Belle cried hysterically when Ted insisted Cindy had a few weeks to live at most. Belle promised she'd help make Cindy's last few weeks happy. Linda tried to maintain her professional discretion when Ray and Peggy pressed her on Cindy's condition. Gloria disagreed when Linda felt Peggy became more involved in her work than in living since Dick died. Jim urged Russ to let out his frustration, and insisted Cindy will always be a part of their family because no one will ever forget her.

Russ: "If Cindy never knows the truth, but believes her life is beginning instead of ending in that hospital bed, you will have done the most anyone can do to help."
Lenore: "I'll make sure she believes that. You can count on me." [SHE KISSES HIS CHEEK AT THE DOOR. RUSS TURNS AND LEAVES HURRIEDLY, AS LENORE GAZES AFTER HIM. FADE OUT]

Ted: "She's going to die."
Belle: "I don't understand. Russ told me that Dr. Rogers is the best doctor in the..." [SHE STOPS]
Ted: "Nobody can save her. It's too late." [BELLE BURIES HER FACE IN HER HANDS. TED CROSSES TO HER AND EMBRACES HER]

AUGUST 29, 1972 (EP. #2076)
Cindy was willing to settle for one wedding when Russ offered her a second wedding in a church once she's out of hospital. John apologized for putting Bernice in an impossible position, but felt seeing her was the only thing that kept him going since Pat wasn't herself and he didn't know how to reach her. Belle blamed herself for not paying enough attention to Cindy when she was a little girl, but Mary encouraged her to help make Cindy's wedding a happy occasion for everyone. Bernice insisted to Pat that John would never risk losing her by having an affair. Even though she admitted Pat was right about her being in love, Bernice wasn't sure she was ready to settle down as Mrs. Mark Venable. Cindy told Pat and John that Alice and Pat will be her attendants and Lenore her matron-of-honor (with Jim as best man). Cindy dozed off while looking over travel brochures with Russ, who then ran out of the room to lean against the wall and bite back tears.

AUGUST 30, 1972 (EP. #2077)
David agreed Russ can bring Cindy into the hospital chapel in a wheelchair for their wedding. Pat complained to John he pays more attention to Marianne. Mary and Jim dropped in on the spur of the moment to invite everyone on a picnic, but John left angrily after declining. Lenore discussed gowns with Cindy, then Russ came to tell her Ted will be wheeling her down the chapel aisle next week. Jim felt telling Pat the truth about Cindy might shock her back to reality, but Mary felt it would plunge her even deeper into despair. Mary decided Pat needed someone with her during the day. While on a business lunch with Lenore and Robert, John was surprised to see Pat and Bernice having drinks at the bar. Pat thought Robert very handsome and wondered if he was interested in Lenore, but Bernice suspected Lenore had a long-term affair that would explain Walter's unhappiness before his death.

Jim: "Well, Marianne, are you ready to go for a long drive in the country."
Marianne: "Yes, Grandpa."

AUGUST 31, 1972 (EP. #2078)
Rachel complained to Ada that Steve's unscheduled visits with Jamie disrupted her own ability to see Jamie. Ada and Ted convinced Rachel to attend the wedding for Cindy's sake. John accused Bernice of playing a cheap trick on Pat and encouraging her to drink. To appease John, Bernice refused a luncheon date when Pat phoned. Gerald was understanding when Rachel let it slip that Ted was upset lately because Cindy won't be leaving the hospital. When Rachel whined that Steve making up his own schedule to see Jamie prevented her from making her own plans to see the boy, Gerald suggested she talk directly to Steve about it. Steve was concerned that it was a strain on Alice to be in constant attendance on Cindy. Alice offered to let Steve bring Jamie over so he can play out in the woods.

SEPTEMBER 1, 1972 (EP. #2079)
Pat and Lenore showed Helen their wedding gowns. Pat smelled a conspiracy to keep her in the dark when Lenore revealed Cindy was dying, then she blew up at Lenore for not being as true a friend to her as Bernice. A drunk Pat phoned to accuse John of keeping Cindy's illness a secret from her, then asked him to pick up her dress at Lenore's. Bernice advised John to keep Pat from the wedding as she will likely make a scene. Mary put the twins down for their nap, then ordered Pat to stop wallowing in self-pity and pull herself together. Jim brought Russ his suit, then Pat phoned to decry her selfish and foolish behavior, but Russ told her to pour the drink she was holding down the sink.

SEPTEMBER 4, 1972 (EP. #2080)
Rachel, Ted, and Ada made plans for Jamie during the wedding. Rachel complained to Ada about walking into a room full of people who hate her, like Alice and Pat, and seeing Mary staring at her. Russ soothed Cindy's nerves. Belle fought back tears as she brushed Cindy's hair. Jamie enjoyed sitting on the terrace listening to Steve tell him about all the animals in the woods. Steve was pleased when Jamie remembered Alice as having given him a big boat for Christmas. Rachel was disagreeable when Steve phoned not wanting her to be around when he brought Jamie home. As Alice began helping her put her dress on, Cindy felt as if everything in her life was falling into place.

Rachel: "Oh, all right. I'll go. But don't blame me if something goes wrong."
Ada: "What can go wrong?"
Rachel: "Something always does when I do something I really don't want to do."

SEPTEMBER 5, 1972 (EP. #2081)
Cindy told Lenore and Alice that she wants everyone to share in her and Russ's happiness. Lenore and Ted comforted Belle, who leaned against the corridor wall and sobbed while lamenting that Russ and Cindy will never live together as man and wife due to Cindy's impending death. Pat sipped a high ball and groused to John that she dreads attending the wedding since everyone is pretending that Cindy will survive despite knowing the truth. John argued that no one wants to provoke Pat into making a scene in response to Pat's complaints that her family and friends conceal things from her, check whether or not she has been drinking, and criticize her frequently. Pat voiced suspicions that John lies to her about his whereabouts and defended her friendship with Bernice, prompting John to accuse Pat of talking to other people behind his back. John requested that Mrs. Brewster babysit the twins once Pat stumbled against the bed after getting intoxicated. Pat told John to attend the wedding alone and sank onto the bed. Russ confided to Jim that he cannot accept that Cindy will be taken away from him. Jim expressed pride in Russ for being a good, strong man and promised that the family will give him moral support. John fibbed to Steve that Pat stayed home due to having a bad headache. Russ thanked Rachel for coming to the wedding and emphasized that they should put the past behind them. David informed Russ that Cindy was given medication to regulate her heartbeat that would make her drowsy and that he alerted the Emergency Care Unit as a precautionary measure. Cindy looked at Russ with complete trust and adoration while Dr. Parker officiated the wedding ceremony as the minister. David followed Russ as he wheeled Cindy back to her hospital room. John begged Lenore not to check on an intoxicated Pat, then told Mary that Pat was too upset to attend the wedding. Mary stared curiously as Rachel approached Steve after Ted went to talk to Dr. Parker.

(DR. PARKER TAKES HIS PLACE, AS MARY, BELLE, JOHN AND STEVE SIT IN THEIR PEWS. RACHEL SITS IN THE BACK OF THE CHAPEL. JIM AND RUSS STAND BEFORE DR. PARKER. TED WHEELS CINDY INTO THE CHAPEL VERY SLOWLY, WITH ALICE AND LENORE WALKING BEHIND THEM. BELLE BEGINS TO CRY, AND MARY COMFORTS HER, AND THEN, LOOKING UP, SHE SMILES AT CINDY AND ALICE. TED STOPS CINDY'S WHEELCHAIR AT THE ALTAR AND KISSES HER ON THE FOREHEAD, THEN STANDS ASIDE. LENORE TAKES HIS PLACE. RUSS STEPS TO CINDY'S OTHER SIDE).

SEPTEMBER 6, 1972 (EP. #2082)
Ted and Belle were grateful to Steve for offering his moral support. John asked Mary not to stop by the house to see Pat. Mary deduced that John had insisted that Pat stay home because she got drunk. Lenore told John that Alice combined her duties as bridesmaid and nurse to prevent Cindy from getting too tired. Lenore permitted John to take her home so that they could talk about Pat. Ted thanked Lenore for carrying out Cindy's wishes for the wedding ceremony. Jim surmised to Mary that Lenore would have more time to spend with Pat now. Belle cried when Jim and Mary expressed gratitude to her for gifting Cindy as a new daughter-in-law to them. Rachel told Ted that she would meet him at the restaurant after she put Jamie to bed. David informed Jim and Mary that Cindy got through the ceremony without complications. Rachel whined to Steve that she has to adjust her schedule to allow him to see Jamie and that she has to be absent when Steve brings Jamie home. Steve brusquely told Rachel to take her complaints to John. Pat conceded to John's point that her erratic behavior might have caused Cindy to suspect that everyone is lying about her condition at the wedding. John chastised Pat for being self-destructive and for comparing Cindy's impending death to that of their own marriage. Pat carped to John that Mary lectured her for indulging in self-pity and that Alice and Lenore were avoiding her. Pat angrily fled the bedroom once John revealed that he discussed Pat with Lenore while driving her home. Steve and Alice remarked that Cindy seemed to be radiant at the wedding and vowed that they would help Russ cope with Cindy's death. Alice urged Steve to settle his arrangements to see Jamie with Rachel, but Steve adamantly refused to be involved with Rachel in any way. David cautioned Cindy against making plans with Russ for the wedding reception, honeymoon, and their apartment. Russ held Cindy in his arms and held her hand as she fell asleep in her hospital bed.

SEPTEMBER 7, 1972 (EP. #2083)
Ted told Ada about Russ and Cindy's wedding, then admitted that it is hard to keep the truth from Cindy and that he cannot stop thinking that she will never leave the hospital again. Ada encouraged Ted to remember the good times that he shared with Cindy throughout their lives, prompting Ted to express gratitude that he and Rachel have Jamie to keep them focused on the future. Rachel insolently told Ada that she would not disrupt her life so that Steve could visit Jamie and that John would cite obeying his client's wishes should Rachel discuss the matter with him. Ada told Rachel that she agreed to Steve's visitation arrangements with Jamie and that people would not yield to her demands. Rachel complained that Ada, Ted, and John do not consider her needs, but Ada vowed that Rachel would not be present when Steve brings Jamie home. Secretary Joan Barnard gave file folders on the Washington branch to Bernice, who was concerned by John's tardiness to work. John confided to Bernice that Pat's drinking was out of control and that she has isolated herself from everyone. Bernice was intrigued to learn from John that Pat blamed Lenore for not telling her about Cindy's impending death and that John discussed Pat with Lenore while driving her home from Russ and Cindy's wedding. Mary asserted to Pat that she tries to forget her troubles by drinking and has isolated herself from family and friends. Pat defiantly freshened a drink and went on an angry tirade about everyone treating her like a spoiled child who cannot take care of herself. Bernice told Pat that someone was gossiping about John and Lenore spending time in his car after they left the wedding together. Ray gave heartfelt condolences to Ted once he revealed that Cindy had weeks to live. Gerald reproached Ted for forcing Rachel to consent to an agreement in which she cannot see Jamie during Steve's visits with him. Ted blamed Gerald for causing Rachel's discontent and threatened to fire Gerald should he continue to interfere in their lives.

Joan: (Introduction Line) (to Bernice) "Here are the Washington folders you wanted, Miss Robinson."

Notes: First on-screen appearance of Joan Barnard, secretary at the Randolph law offices. According to the script, Jamie started first grade during this episode.

SEPTEMBER 8, 1972 (EP. #2084)
Ted noted that Rachel resisted his affections and had not spoken to him since Russ and Cindy's wedding, but Rachel claimed that she was exhausted and had a lot on her mind. Rachel bleated to Ted that she acquiesced to Steve's wishes to visit Jamie because she could not bear to keep fighting about it anymore, she is sick of taking orders from Ada, Steve, and John, and groaned that everything turned out well for everyone except her. Robert talked to Lenore about his approach to architectural design, marriage to Jessica, and that he has become more empathetic due to Russ's sorrow over Cindy's fate. Lenore was pleased when Robert thanked her for helping him cope with Jessica and Robbie's deaths and confided that he had conquered his awkwardness towards being around children after meeting Wally and Jamie. John called to invite Lenore to lunch under the stipulation that she not tell Pat about it. Jim tried unsuccessfully to convince Pat that he came to the house to show a model of the playhouse Jim wants to build for the twins and not to check on Pat. Jim was distraught as Pat stated that she drinks to get through the day and lies awake at night contemplating the ways in which her life has changed. Pat bemoaned to Jim that she yearns for John to see her as a woman instead of a child who cannot take care of herself. Lenore told John that Pat dislikes anyone telling her not to drink, suspects that John has feelings for another woman, and has not treated her like a wife for months. John confessed to Lenore that it is difficult to be affectionate with Pat because she is hostile towards him and is not presentable when he comes home. John expressed certainty to Lenore that nothing will ever come between her and Pat. Gerald convinced Rachel that Steve and Alice's happy marriage is tenuous, that Alice consented to letting Steve see Jamie on the condition that he avoids Rachel, and speculated that Steve is secretly attracted to Rachel. Gerald promised Rachel that he would help her take Steve away from Alice.

Pat: "Dad, sometimes I have these strange fantasies...of going wild...doing things I don't want to do. I'd do anything to make John look me as if I'm a woman instead of a child who can't take care of herself."
Jim: "I know it's difficult to be a wife."
Pat: "A wife. John hasn't treated me like a wife for a long time." (SHE TAKES ANOTHER SIP OF HER DRINK) "So maybe you should build me a playhouse, and put me in, and throw the key away...I wonder if John would even notice..." (SHE BEGINS TO CRY)

SEPTEMBER 11, 1972 (EP. #2085)
John conceded to Pat that he had been unfair by refusing to have company and suggested that they invite Robert and Lenore for dinner at the house. Pat decided to call Lenore once John reassured her that Lenore does not hold a grudge against Pat for accusing her of concealing Cindy's mortality and for dodging Lenore's calls. Mary confessed Pat's true reason for skipping Russ and Cindy's wedding to Alice. Mary told Alice that Pat cannot handle a crisis without drinking, that John seemed preoccupied despite spending more time at home, and Pat suspects that John is interested in another woman. Alice opined to Mary that Pat must resolve her issues with John. Alice told Mary that Steve made arrangements to see Jamie without Rachel being present once Alice confessed her jealousy of Rachel to Steve. Lenore was forgiving when Pat apologized for her behavior and admitted that everyone was right to keep Pat from telling Cindy that she is going to die. Pat told Lenore that she endures a vicious cycle by drinking to forget her problems and wakes up depressed each morning. Lenore reiterated gratitude to Pat for helping her through Walter's death and begged Pat to talk candidly to John before it is too late. Lenore told Pat that she and Helen invited Robert to dinner because he is a lonely man who enjoys the company of children. Pat convinced Lenore to overcome her reservations and talk to Robert about having dinner with John and Pat. Lenore and Pat promised each other that nothing would come between them. John planned to meet Rachel since Steve suspects that she intends to violate the terms of his visitation arrangement with Jamie, despite that all other parties involved are satisfied with it. Pat advised Mark not to be envious of her life because he would be tied down to a household and family by getting married. John secretly arranged a rendezvous with Bernice instead of yielding to Pat's wishes that they go out to dinner with Mark and Bernice. Bernice forced Mark to cancel their plans for the evening by faking a headache.

SEPTEMBER 12, 1972 (EP. #2086)
Rachel told Gerald that she must make encounters with Steve appear accidental so that Ted does not discover that she confronted Steve about Jamie. Rachel went on a diatribe to John that she resents everyone placing restrictions on her, that she would not promise to be absent when Steve brings Jamie home from their visits, that she has little time alone with Jamie, and that Steve gives her insufficient notice each time he wishes to see him. Rachel decried lawyers making arrangements concerning her son and carped that everyone is treating Jamie as an object instead of a human being. John was floored when Rachel threatened to take Jamie away from Bay City to start a new life and be free of other people's interference. Rachel stormed out of the office, stopped on the other side of the door, and smiled smugly to herself. Peggy told Ted that Steve would gladly accept monthly loan payments because Steve is a fair man with his business dealings. Ted mused to Peggy that things were settled between him, Rachel, and Steve concerning Jamie, but was upset that he cannot regain ownership of the restaurant until he has completed his parole. John told Peggy that he should have anticipated trouble from Rachel over Steve's visits with Jamie. Robert echoed John's assertions that Steve is an expert in construction and organization. Pat took Robert to peek at the twins while Lenore told John that she was starting to enjoy a renewed social life. John lauded the ease in which Lenore has become adept at architecture while working with Robert. Robert told John and Pat that he credits Steve and Lenore for getting him through the worst period of his life. Cindy and Linda were delighted when Jim and Mary gifted Cindy flowers and a framed photograph of Russ. Cindy lamented to Jim and Mary that she and Russ may have to postpone their honeymoon because Russ is exhausting himself at the hospital. Jim held Mary, who broke into tears after Russ and Linda went into Cindy's room to take her blood pressure and temperature.

Lenore: "I'd just gotten to the point where I could talk about ectopic pregnancies with Stuart, and I have to forget all about that and figure out what Robert means by a pre-cast spandrel."
John: "A what?"
Lenore: "You know, a pre-cast spandrel --"
John: "You're making it up."
Lenore: "I am not. It's that space between two arches...and a molding..."
John: (LAUGHING) "You're not making it up! You really do know!"

SEPTEMBER 13, 1972 (EP. #2087)
Alice assuaged Cindy's embarrassment over telling her secrets to Russ's photograph. Cindy asked Alice to talk to Russ because he looks tired, never goes home, and eats all of his meals in the cafeteria. Alice turned her head away to hide tears from Cindy, who vowed that it would be her job to take care of Russ once they went home. Ada was pleased when Alice expressed gratitude for her efforts to ensure that Steve could see Jamie and that she does not hold anything against him. Alice told Ada that she and Steve are not trying to conceive another child without medical approval. Ada soothed Cindy's worries by stating that Ted has resumed making loan payments to Steve and that he sees Jamie twice a week. Cindy happily told Ada that she and Russ have their whole lives ahead of them, that her illness will be behind them, and that she can concentrate on being Russ's wife. Gerald told Ted that Rachel had qualms about the arrangements they made for Steve to see Jamie. Rachel complained to Ted that Jamie may view his living situation unfavorably after being at Steve and Alice's house, that she cannot make plans because Steve does not give her advanced notice of his visits or provide details on their outings. Ted reminded Rachel that she is not permitted to deal directly with Steve when Rachel objected to Ted's decision to discuss her gripes with Steve on her behalf. Gerald warned Rachel that she must take action or risk Alice trying to hold onto Steve by bonding with the son he loves so much. Steve reiterated to Ted that Rachel should air grievances she has over Steve and Jamie's visits with John. Alice told Steve that Rachel should have input on his time with Jamie so that Rachel does not become resentful over minor points. Russ promised Cindy that he would consult with David on getting her released. Cindy was caught in unbearable pain after carefully getting out of bed to retrieve the picture of Russ that she dropped onto the floor. Alice put a consoling arm around Russ, who sobbed after Cindy quickly died in his arms.

(CINDY PICKS UP THE PHOTO [OF RUSS] AND LOOKS AT IT)
Cindy: "Why didn't we think of it before? You've got to help me work these things out...you know..." (SHE PUTS THE PHOTO BACK ON THE NIGHT TABLE, BUT AS SHE DOES, SHE KNOCKS IT ON THE FLOOR) "Oh, dear.." (SHE HESITATES, THEN SLOWLY FOLDS BACK THE COVERS. SHE GETS OUT OF BED VERY QUIETLY AND REACHES FOR THE PHOTO, THEN PICKS IT UP, EVEN THOUGH SHE FEELS A SHARP, SUDDEN PAIN) "There we are..." (THEN SUDDENLY, SHE SWAYS BACK AND FORTH, CAUGHT IN UNBEARABLE PAIN). "Russ! Russ!" (SHE LEANS AGAINST THE BED, AS RUSS AND ALICE ENTER HURRIEDLY) "Oh, Russ..."
Russ: "Cindy! What happened?"
Cindy: "Oh, Russ...you fell..." (SHE SWAYS AGAIN, AND HE CATCHES HER IN HIS ARMS. ALICE, IN THE BACKGROUND IS ON THE TELEPHONE)
Alice: "Emergency. Stat. Rm. 538."
Russ: "Darling, Oh, my darling."
Cindy: (Exit Line) "Hold me, Russ...Oh, please, hold me. Where are you?"
Russ: "I'm here..." (SHE MAKES A DEEP SOUND IN HER THROAT AND THEN SINKS IN HIS ARMS. RUSS, LOOKING AT HER FACE, HOLDS HER TIGHTLY) "Cindy, Cindy. Oh no." (ALICE COMES UP BEHIND HIM AND PUTS HER ARM AROUND HIM) "It's all over, Alice...so fast..." (HE BEGINS TO SOB)

Notes: Last appearance of Leonie Norton as Cindy Clark.

SEPTEMBER 14, 1972 (EP. #2088)
Russ sobbed while expressing his shock and despair to Alice that Cindy died so suddenly. Alice called to tell Ted that Cindy died in Russ's arms a few minutes ago. Ada unobtrusively took the phone and thanked Alice for calling them while Rachel led Ted to a table as he began to break down into tears. Ted took Ada's suggestion that he deliver the news about Cindy to Belle in person instead of waiting until tomorrow morning. Ada told Rachel to profess her love to Ted and accompany him to Belle's apartment so that Ted knows that he has Rachel's support. Ted advised Ada and Rachel that Belle will not want anyone to witness her going to pieces once she learns about Cindy's death. Ada reflected to a despondent Rachel that people must do the best they can for friends and loved ones because life is uncertain and time is precious. Alice tried to comfort Russ by emphasizing that Cindy never knew the severity of her illness, that she died while being happy and optimistic about the future, and urged Russ to face life without Cindy. Jim and Mary tried to convince Russ to stay at the Matthews house overnight, take a leave of absence, and allow Jim to make the funeral arrangements. Russ recounted the events that led to Cindy's death for Jim and Mary while Alice called Steve. Jim, Mary, and Alice gave Russ space after he opined that Cindy's death was quick and senseless before fleeing the hospital waiting room. A grief-stricken Belle confided to Ted that she had prayed for a miracle and remarked that Cindy was a caring, selfless person. Russ reassured Ted and Belle that Cindy made him happy and that she would always be his wife. Ted was sympathetic as Russ fretted that he must get accustomed to being alone. Lenore told Russ that she empathizes with him since they have been close friends for years and their lives are connected. Lenore urged Russ not to quit living and encouraged him to openly display his grief. Russ threw himself onto the sofa and sobbed uncontrollably while Lenore went to make some coffee.

Note: A replay of the end of Act IV, which consisted of Cindy's death and featured Russ and Alice served as the Prologue for this episode.

SEPTEMBER 15, 1972 (EP. #2089)
Jim and Mary talked about Cindy's funeral service, leading Russ to sadly remark that Dr. Parker officiated his wedding to Cindy beforehand. Russ reflected to Jim and Mary that Cindy never stopped believing that she and Russ would go on their honeymoon and start their lives together as a married couple. Jim and Mary understood when Russ vowed to bury himself in work to keep his mind occupied. Mark commented to Bernice that life is unpredictable and that people should take chances at happiness, but Bernice lamented that she has doubts that she will find it. Bernice feigned relief when John stated that Pat attended Cindy's funeral service and kept her composure. John requested that Peggy talk to Ted about Rachel's problems with Steve and Jamie's visits because Rachel is impulsive and could cause things to get out of hand. Bernice bade a hasty retreat from the office when John declined to spend the evening with her since John had already made plans to take Pat out to dinner. Steve joked that Robert and Lenore were trying to shape Jamie into an architect by nurturing his enthusiasm over looking at blueprints, but hypothesized that Jamie may become an essential part of Frame Enterprises in the future. Lenore expressed fears to Robert and Steve that Russ may become ill by exhausting himself with work as he copes with Cindy's death. Robert felt slightly awkward when Lenore admitted that Russ, Pat, and Alice treated her like a member of their family and that Russ was like a brother to her. Rachel insolently told Ada that Steve cannot see Jamie this afternoon because she is taking him to Bryant's to buy new clothes. Ada was disturbed as Rachel proclaimed that she would rather move away from Bay City than allow Jamie to spend time with Alice. Bernice told Pat that she is jealous of her life. Steve asked John to postpone scheduling subsequent meetings to discuss Rachel's issues concerning his arrangements with Jamie. Steve resolved to talk to Rachel in response to Ada arriving at his office without Jamie.

Lenore: "Maybe he'd like to see the model Robert's been working on, too."
Steve: "Hey, what are you trying to do? Make an architect out of the boy?"
Robert: "It's a very gratifying professional, Steve."
Steve: "Well, someday, he might be part of this firm, who knows?"

Notes: According to production notes, wardrobe appropriate for a funeral was provided to Jim, Mary, Russ, John, Steve, Lenore, and Rachel, who were among the attendees at Cindy's funeral service (which took place off-screen) and were characters featured in this episode. Other attendees likely included Ted, Belle, Pat, and Alice since it was later stated that the funeral service included Russ and Cindy's families and Lenore.

SEPTEMBER 18, 1972 (EP. #2090)
Steve carped to Alice that Rachel refused to let Ada bring Jamie to visit him because Rachel claimed that he sees Jamie more often than she does. Steve told Alice that he intends to speak with Rachel since she stormed out after John tried to discuss the matter with her and Ada asked Steve not to talk to Ted right now. Alice persuaded Steve to wait a couple days to cool his temper and schedule another meeting with John. Ada urged Ted to focus on his own life and not dwell on the past when Ted regretfully stated that Russ and Cindy would have been married long ago had Ted not caused her so much unhappiness. Ted lamented to Ada that Belle sits alone in her apartment and broods and seems to be isolating herself from people. Ada warned Rachel that she should not upset Ted by protesting Steve's arrangements to see Jamie, but Rachel maintained that she is putting Jamie's welfare first and that Ada would cause Ted to learn the truth by talking to Steve and John about the situation. Rachel vowed to Ada that she would not let anyone take Jamie away from her. Pat told Bernice that Lenore mistakenly thought she knew about Cindy's mortality, that Lenore is a private person, and that she is not interested in Robert. Bernice insinuated to Pat that Lenore can be secretive and posited that Lenore may be in a romance that she was concealing from everyone. John informed Steve that Rachel threatened to take Jamie away from Bay City due to her dissatisfaction with the agreement on Steve's visits with Jamie. Steve told John to make Rachel cooperate or he would retaliate by getting the Fireside Inn closed. Bernice mollified John by insisting that Pat was loyal to her friends and would not suspect Bernice of anything since they have become close. Rachel lied to Ted that things are working out concerning Steve and Jamie. Gerald instructed Rachel to make it clear to Steve that she is calling the shots over Jamie. Steve told Alice that he may be forced to use the Fireside Inn as a weapon against Rachel because of her threat involving Jamie.

SEPTEMBER 19, 1972 (EP. #2091)
Ada told Steve that she made his opinion of Rachel's refusal to bring Jamie to see him clear, but emphasized that Rachel is stubborn and that retaliation against her would hurt Ted unnecessarily. Ada defended Rachel's desire to spend more time with Jamie by listing the limited hours that Rachel has with him. Steve informed Ada that Rachel tried to complain to him about the visitation arrangement at Russ and Cindy's wedding and that she vowed to take Jamie out of town. Steve warned Ada that Rachel is forcing him to take unpleasant actions that could punish Ted should she disobey the agreement they made concerning Steve's visits with Jamie. Lenore did not appreciate Bernice's criticisms of Pat that have affected her ability to entertain guests in front of Robert. Lenore told Robert that Walter despised Bernice even though they worked together to handle some of Steve's business affairs. Robert grew thoughtful as Lenore confessed that she may be unwilling to mend fences with Bernice or be friendly towards her. Russ assumed a cheerful veneer while greeting Pat, Michael, and Marianne and accepting Pat's lunch invitation. Russ told Pat that he dreads going to the hospital because he imagines Cindy still working there. Lenore agreed to include Robert in her plans to have John and Pat over to dinner at the house in the near future. Pat opined to Russ that Lenore spends time with Robert because Wally needs to be around a man, but that Lenore resists getting serious about anyone. Pat told Russ that Bernice is not critical of her like Lenore, prompting Russ to counter that Lenore is a good friend who would do anything to make sure that Pat is happy. Rachel was irritated when Ada threatened to involve Ted should she continue to contest the visitation agreement. Gerald told Rachel to meet Steve somewhere alone so that Ada and Steve could not interrupt their conversation. Gerald lied to Steve over the phone that he does not know Rachel's whereabouts, then advised Rachel to make Steve wait for her to contact him.

SEPTEMBER 20, 1972 (EP. #2092)
Lenore asked Helen to make sure that Wally had an extra-long nap so that Robert can play with him. Helen offered to go out to dinner and see a movie so that Robert and Lenore could be alone, but Lenore asserted that she does not want to complicate her life by adding a romantic attachment to it and asked Helen not to push her into a relationship. Mark disagreed with Bernice's contentions that Lenore is a secretive person, that she acts differently around men, and is feigning a lack of interest in anything except for Wally. Bernice openly questioned Lenore's aversion to dating, then noted that she had retreated into a hidden life and dropped old friends like Pat. Mark took Bernice's suggestion that they visit Pat so that he could discuss pressing business matters with John. Mark had Joan deliver revisions of the zoning codes to Lenore since Bernice did not want to endure Lenore's condescending manner towards her. Gloria told Peggy that she suspects that Linda is dating Zack Richards again and opined that Linda is flighty and shows poor judgment towards boys. Peggy expressed doubts that she could persuade Linda into staying away from Zack per Gloria's request. Peggy conceded to Mark that she and Gloria should trust Linda despite that they share a mutual dislike of Zack. Zack got Linda to respond to his kisses by pointing out that they have known each other for years and would not be interrupted by Gloria or Linda. Ray was disconcerted when Zack innocently commented that he would not expect Peggy to date a man who has a criminal record. Ray begrudgingly agreed to keep Zack and Linda's relationship secret under the condition that Linda tells Gloria and Peggy about it soon. Helen admired Robert as he read "Peter Rabbit" to Wally. Robert and Lenore made a date to take Wally to the zoo together. Robert and Lenore listed the ways in which their respective lives have improved because of their blossoming friendship. Lenore encouraged Robert to let other people help him deal with his grief.

(METCALF LIVING ROOM WHERE ZACK AND LINDA ARE ON THE SOFA TOGETHER. ZACK TRIES TO KISS LINDA, BUT SHE DRAWS AWAY FROM HIM)
Zack: (Introduction Line) "Hey, come on, Lindy...don't be like that."
Linda: "Somebody might walk in."
Zack: "You said nobody was going to be home tonight, didn't you?"
Linda: "That's right. Peggy has a date and Mom has a meeting."
Zack: "So what are you afraid of, huh? Not of me...we know [sic] each other too long and too well for that don't we?"

Notes: First appearance of Terry Alexander as Zack Richards. Gloria mentions that she has been a guidance counselor at Bay City High School for twenty years. Zack works as a clerk at a drug store. One of his main job duties involved delivering prescriptions directly to customers.

SEPTEMBER 21, 1972 (EP. #2093)
Gerald fibbed to Steve that Rachel had not arrived at the Fireside Inn yet. Steve told Gerald that he has left phone messages on several occasions which Rachel has not returned, but Gerald asserted that he could not force Rachel to call him. Gerald advised Rachel to make Steve wait until she has rehearsed everything that she wants to discuss with him. Ted noticed that Gerald and Rachel seemed annoyed and serious, prompting Rachel to retort that she dislikes reporting the topic of her conversations to him. Ted summoned Ray to the office so that he could speak with Gloria privately. Ray lied to Gloria that Linda was alone when he called Peggy because Ray had mistakenly thought that he was supposed to pick up Peggy for their date at the Metcalf household. Gloria asked Ray to tell her whether or not he catches Zack and Linda together and emphasized that Peggy shares her concerns over Zack. Alice tried unsuccessfully to convince Russ to ease his workload, to leave the apartment and stay with Jim and Mary for a few weeks, and to have dinner with Steve and Alice soon. Russ told Alice that David appointed him to co-head his new Cardiac Research Unit and predicted that Alice would be working under David's service. Alice was moved when Russ expressed optimism that the research unit would extend the lives of heart patients like Cindy. Bernice was discomfited when Steve decided to send Mark with her to Washington to handle some of the workload and hire a replacement for a lawyer who resigned to resume his private practice. Steve urged an unenthusiastic Bernice to enjoy time with Mark while they were in Washington. Rachel arranged to meet Steve at his office after the dinner rush concluded at the Fireside Inn and before Steve picks up Alice from the hospital. Gerald told Rachel to remember that Jamie binds her and Steve together and to remain focused on her objectives. Gerald surreptitiously left an anonymous phone message with Linda instructing Alice to pick up Steve at this office.

SEPTEMBER 22, 1972 (EP. #2094)
Alice considered it odd when Linda mentioned that an unidentified man called on Steve's behalf to tell Alice to meet Steve at his office. Steve asked Robert to establish a contingency fund since the housing project may exceed its estimated budget. Mark agreed when Steve laid out plans to send him and Bernice to Washington so that Mark could assume legal duties until a lawyer who resigned is replaced and Bernice could reorganize the office. Steve explained that he chose Mark to accompany Bernice instead of John so that Mark and Bernice could spend time together, get a break from their routines, and since Mark is free of familial responsibilities. Robert and Steve agreed that it is surprising that Bernice did not mention Steve's plans to send her to Washington to Mark. Bernice had John hide in her bedroom when Mark arrived earlier than expected for his date with Bernice. John fumed as he overheard Mark enthuse to Bernice about going to Washington together. Bernice tricked Mark into going to a liquor store to buy champagne so that they could celebrate, which gave John a chance to sneak out of the apartment. Bernice reassured John that it was Steve's decision to send Mark on a business trip to Washington with her. John asked Bernice to convince Steve to send him in Mark's place. Steve quickly introduced Rachel to Robert and ushered her into his office. Rachel defiantly told Steve that she would not talk about personal affairs with lawyers and denied receiving the phone messages that Steve had left with Gerald. Steve reluctantly acquiesced to Rachel's demand for privacy by taking her to his apartment above the offices. Rachel crowed about Steve confiding in her about his childhood and the close bond that they shared because of Jamie despite Steve's protests to the contrary. Alice was shocked to hear Rachel surmise that Steve used the visitation arrangement to keep Rachel away from him and gushed about feeling closer to Steve than she had to any other man on the day that Alice lost her baby.

(THE ELEVATOR DOOR OPENS QUIETLY AND ALICE STEPS OUT. SHE HEARS THE VOICES AND STANDS, LISTENING, WITHOUT STEVE OR RACHEL HEARING HER)
Rachel: "There are times when I've felt you and I are closer to each other than two people could ever be."
Steve: "Rachel, you have no right to think that."
Rachel: "Yes, I do, Steve! I do because we've had our moments together."
Steve: "But all that happened a long time ago, Rachel."
Rachel: "It hasn't been that long. And it couldn't have been that bad. After all, you and I have Jamie to prove that, don't we?"
Steve: (GRUDGINGLY) "We have Jamie in common, yes..."
Rachel: (STOPS HIM) "And those days we spent together in the park while you were supposed to be in Somerset -- we had the same kind of feeling for each other that we had before Jamie was born."
Steve: (SOTTO) "Rachel you're wrong."
Rachel: "Am I? Why have you been so frightened of seeing me. You set up the agreement so that you wouldn't have to have any contact with me. It wasn't for Alice's sake, but for your own. Why can't you admit it? We have more in common than anyone else knows. That day when Alice lost her baby and we were together I felt closer to you than I've ever felt to another man." (OUT ON ALICE IN MUTE SURPRISE).

SEPTEMBER 25, 1972 (EP. #2095)
A stunned Alice quickly left in the elevator that led to Steve's apartment before he and Rachel could notice that Alice had witnessed their conversation. Rachel told Steve that she wants Jamie to know his father without shame, that she loved Steve, and insisted that their conflicts would be solved by being together when Steve visits Jamie. Steve denounced Rachel as being incapable of love, making it difficult for him to see Jamie, and for reneging on the agreement they made with John and Ted. Rachel desperately reminded Steve that he promised not to use the Fireside Inn as a weapon, but Steve maintained that he would resort to drastic measures should Rachel refuse to cooperate with him. Steve told Rachel that he would provide for Jamie, contact Ada to schedule his bi-weekly visits with Jamie, and ordered Rachel to leave because she wasted his time. John pressed Bernice to talk to Steve before Mark finalizes their plans to go to Washington. Bernice cancelled her date with Mark by claiming that she became depressed after receiving a call about her favorite aunt being terminally ill. A teary-eyed, numb Alice walked through the house, stared at the furniture and decorations, sunk onto the sofa, and buried her face in her hands while ignoring the ringing of the phone. Bernice headed to the office after she was unsuccessful at reaching Steve by phone. Steve chose to send Bernice to Washington alone because of her familiarity with the Washington office while Mark helps John so that Pat would not worry about his heavy workload. Bernice fumed when an insolent Steve ranted that his employees must keep their personal lives from affecting their work for him. Rachel told Gerald that she feared that Steve would tell Ted about their meeting and make good on the threats he made against her. Alice brought a suitcase downstairs, sat at a coffee table, and read a note she had written, which informed Jim and Mary that she was leaving Steve and would contact them once she was settled in an undetermined designation.

Rachel: "...I want him to know who his father is someday, but not until you and I can tell him without shame."
Steve: "Rachel, we're both married."
Rachel: "I wish we weren't. I've never been able to get you out of my mind since that night. I belonged to you then, and I always will, no matter who I'm married to."
Steve: "You've said things tonight that both of us should forget."
Rachel: "I can't forget about you."
Steve: "That's too bad because it's only Jamie I'm interested in."
Rachel: "I don't believe you."
Steve: "Jamie would never have been born if I hadn't been lonely and miserable and vulnerable at the time."
Rachel: "I loved you."
Steve: "No, you love yourself, and what you can get from other people. That's why you came here tonight..."
Rachel: "I don't know what you're talking about."

SEPTEMBER 26, 1972 (EP. #2096)
Alice wept while she placed a note to Jim and Mary into an envelope, addressed it, and stuck a stamp on it. Alice picked up her suitcase and rushed from the living room in tears after contemptuously referring to the house as hers. Russ reviewed a medical chart with Linda while waiting for David to join him for an examination of a patient. Linda was pleased when a nurse named Harriet Simmons relieved her from duty at the Nurses' station. David informed Russ that Commonwealth Foundation approved their grant request, but David and Russ must submit a presentation that spells out their objectives and precise requirements of space and personnel to obtain final approval for the new unit at the hospital. David and Russ told Steve that they plan to recruit Alice to work with them in the Cardiac Research Unit. Steve was puzzled to learn from Russ that Alice had signed off duty about an hour ago, had left the hospital, and could not be reached when Steve called the house. Ray told an appreciative Linda that he simply kept his word by not telling Gloria that Zack was with Linda at the Metcalf house. Linda was miffed when Ray opined that Zack was a bad influence and cited his own legal troubles due to getting involved with the wrong crowd. Ted thanked Linda for taking care of Cindy at the hospital. Ray and Ted offered to close the Fireside Inn so that Rachel could go home early to unwind. Rachel went on a diatribe to Ada that fighting Steve is a losing battle and that Steve gets everything he wants by stepping on and bullying other people. Ada tried to convince Rachel to be grateful for having a devoted husband like Ted and a son like Jamie to no avail. Steve frantically ran out of the house after discovering that Alice had left him. Mary told Jim that Russ and David were working on a presentation for the hospital Board of Trustees concerning the funding for the Cardiac Research Unit. A despondent Steve told Jim and Mary that he was mystified that Alice would leave him without providing an explanation.

Notes: Alice's note to Jim and Mary, "Dear Mom and Dad. Something so terrible happened tonight, which I may never be able to tell anyone about. But I am leaving Steven...I don't know where to go or what I will do. Don't worry, I will write to you when I get settled. I cannot stay in Bay City as long as Steve is here. Love, Alice."

SEPTEMBER 27, 1972 (EP. #2097)
Russ scheduled a meeting with David to discuss the space requirements for the Cardiac Research Unit. David and Russ agreed that treating cardiac patients will remind them of Cindy and feel as though she is still with them. Alice called from an airport terminal to inform David that she was resigning from his service, was leaving Bay City for personal reasons, and hung up the phone before Russ could talk to her. Robert and Lenore sensed rightly that Steve was morose due to his lack of interest in looking at Robert's latest blueprints of the housing project. Steve told Lenore that Alice packed a suitcase and left him, despite that she was cheerful when Steve called to make arrangements to pick up Alice from the hospital earlier that afternoon. Lenore promised to contact Steve at John's office should Alice contact her. Steve fretted to Lenore that Alice was apt to stifle her emotions until they explode. John refused to believe Bernice's assumption that Lenore influenced Steve to send her to Washington alone because Steve was not receptive to Bernice's opinions on the matter. Bernice felt defeated when John defended Steve's unwillingness to take him away from Pat by sending him to Washington and denied Bernice's assertion that Pat may have complained to Steve about John's workload. John tried to convince a paranoid Bernice that Steve was unaware of their affair and that he had other things on his mind. Jim suggested to Mary that they allow Steve to take the initiative in calling the police to launch a search for Alice. A postman delivered Alice's letter to Jim and Mary, who were baffled by its contents. Steve lambasted John and Bernice for harping on his decision to send Bernice to Washington without Mark or John. Jim, Mary, and John were disturbed by Steve's confusion over Alice's departure after Steve read Alice's letter. Steve confided to Jim, Mary, and John that Alice gives his life meaning and that he could not continue without her. Alice quickly boarded an airplane flight that was destined for New York City.

Notes: A "pre-fame" Henry Winkler appeared as the postman who delivered Alice's letter to Jim and Mary. Previously, Winkler had appeared as an intern on June 20, 1972.

SEPTEMBER 28, 1972 (EP. #2098)
John told Pat that he and Steve quarreled about sending Bernice to Washington alone, advised Pat that he will have to work extra hours during Bernice's absence, and that Steve was devastated that Alice had left him. John was shocked to realize that neither Alice, Jim, nor Mary had informed Pat, who bemoaned that her friends and family do not tell her things anymore. Robert noted Steve was sullen as he invited him to the house to work on the housing project. Steve made veiled remarks to Robert about Alice leaving town for a while and sadly mused that his dream of sharing a house with Alice had turned into a nightmare. Lenore told Robert that Steve was miserable because of his problems with Alice. Lenore admitted to Pat that she knew about Alice fleeing town. Pat carped to Mary that John had to return to the office and that she seemed to be the last person to learn that Alice left Steve again. Mary questioned whether or not Pat would have been sympathetic had Alice confided in Pat about her reason for leaving Steve, who desperately hoped that Alice would return to him. Pat asserted to Mary that Alice would be smart to divorce Steve before she puts more effort into the marriage. Mary comforted Pat, who wailed that she yearned to emulate Alice's courage and end her marriage to John. Rachel berated herself in front of Gerald for throwing herself at Steve and doubted that she could use Steve's desire to see Jamie to her advantage. Gerald falsely claimed to Ted that he received a message from Steve stating that he would call in advance to arrange a visit with Jamie. Gerald urged Rachel not to let it slip to tell that she met with Steve alone and hinted that Rachel should not be certain that Steve is happy with Alice. Russ told Steve that Alice called to advise David of her resignation and flight out of Bay City. Steve admitted to Robert that he could not handle the death of a spouse and young child. Robert agreed to cut his evening with Steve short since he could not concentrate on anything. Steve pondered the cause of Alice's departure.

SEPTEMBER 29, 1972 (EP. #2099)
A despondent Steve declined John's suggestion that he contact the police or hire a detective to locate Alice since Steve hoped that Alice would call someone. John told Steve that Alice would likely not call Pat because they have drifted apart during the last few months and that Alice hung up the phone before Russ could talk to her after notifying David that she was resigning from his service. Steve glumly surmised to John that Alice left Bay City and does not want anyone to know her whereabouts. Mary told a perplexed Ada that something terrible happened that prompted Alice to abruptly leave Steve without giving anyone advanced notice or an explanation. Ada reflected to Mary that Rachel had objections towards Steve's visits Jamie, but insisted that the arrangement had worked out well and doubted that Steve and Rachel were secretly seeing each other. Mary fretted to Ada that Alice may have fled town because she had reached a breaking point in dealing with conflicts. An airplane passenger named Blake Meier tried to make small talk with Alice, but summoned a stewardess once he realized that Alice was weeping softly. Alice told Blake that she is starting over in a new place and expressed relief that she would not see Steve and Rachel together. Bernice feigned regret to John and Pat over being unable to convince Steve to let Mark accompany her to Washington. Pat acknowledged that John would be negatively affected by Bernice's absence because she helps ease his workload. Pat and Bernice made plans to get together once she returns to town. Bernice begged John to take a flight to Washington under the pretense that he needed to research a patent for Steve to no avail. Pat asked John to fix drinks for her and Bernice while they went to see the twins. Steve dejectedly wandered around the living room, stared at a photograph of Alice, and pondered the reason that Alice left him without warning. Blake was speechless when Alice bitterly proclaimed that things would never be good for her again.

Notes: This episode includes a complete list of extras who appeared as stewardesses and passengers, and full announcements made over the P.A. system during Alice's flight, which was destined for Harrisburg, PA and New York City, NY.

OCTOBER 2, 1972 (EP. #2100)
Jim opined to Mary that they would not benefit by re-reading Alice's letter and felt certain that Steve was not hiding anything from them. Jim tried to calm a frantic Mary by emphasizing that Steve asked John to pursue all possible leads, that Alice left town of her own volition, and she could easily find work as a nurse elsewhere. Steve was disappointed to learn from Jim and Mary that Alice had not contacted them yet. Steve told Jim and Mary that John failed to find a record of anyone matching Alice's description when he checked every route out of Bay City, but insisted that he does not want to involve the police in Alice's disappearance. Steve refused to consider Mary's theory that Rachel had something to do with Alice's disappearance and stressed that Rachel's issues over his visits with Jamie did not influence Alice. Jim could not persuade Steve into getting some sleep instead of speaking to David about Alice's phone call to him. Mary vowed to Jim that she would unearth Alice's reason for leaving Steve. Mary urged Pat not to blame herself for being unavailable so that Alice could confide in her. Ada remained suspicious, despite that Rachel professed her innocence and expressed resentment towards Ada and Mary's assumptions that she caused Alice to flee Bay City. David cautioned Russ against exhausting himself with their plans for establishing the hospital's new cardiac research unit. Russ confirmed for Steve that Alice hung up the phone before he could talk to her. David recounted to Steve that Alice was in a cheerful mood, excited about the new cardiac research unit, and promised to meet with him to discuss staffing it. Steve was not mollified when David pointed out that Alice sounded emotional over the phone, but likely had control of her faculties to make decisions for herself. An annoyed Pat remarked that John would not notice if she left him because John was too preoccupied with work to give Pat much attention. Steve told John and Pat that he could not fathom Alice's reason for leaving him because they had solved their problems.

OCTOBER 3, 1972 (EP. #2101)
Ray encouraged Ted to spend as much time as possible with Belle and not to worry about the Fireside Inn. Gerald caused Ray to become defensive when he criticized Ted for being listless and remarked that Ted is lucky to have him and Ray manage the restaurant while he copes with Cindy's death. Rachel informed a genuinely surprised Gerald that Alice mysteriously left Steve and that she mailed a letter to Jim and Mary that stated that she was not coming back to Bay City. Gerald pushed Rachel to take advantage of Alice's absence and Steve's vulnerability by letting him see Jamie on the condition that Rachel is present. Rachel sensed that Gerald knew about Alice's departure, but was slightly placated by Gerald's promise that he has maintained secrecy on Rachel's meeting with Steve. Gerald reassured Rachel that he simply wants to help her achieve the personal goals she had in life. Belle griped to Ted that she does not want to listen to Mrs. Jorgensen's complaints about her arthritis or hear Ada and Mary talk about their daughters. Ted told Belle that business is good at the Fireside Inn and he had resumed making monthly payments towards Steve's loan. Belle asked Ted to write a note to Alice for tending to Cindy and to see Russ because he was struggling to come to terms with Cindy's death. Belle wept uncontrollably while holding a picture of Cindy. Linda told Zack that Ray covered for them because Gloria suspects that they are seeing each other. Zack asked Linda not to be indecisive about their romance or allow Gloria and Peggy's disapproval to influence her. Linda told Zack to call her at the hospital so that they could arrange their next date. Ted was shocked upon learning from Linda that Alice had resigned from the hospital and left Bay City. Gerald feigned ignorance when Ted mentioned Alice's sudden departure and tersely suggested that Ted show more concern for Rachel instead of worrying about Alice. Ted was offended when Gerald mocked Alice's love for Steve because she walked out on him for the second time.

Zack: "Sometimes I think you got the wrong kind of family for me."
Linda: "Then what are you doing here?"
Zack: "I don't date families, I date girls."
Linda: (LAUGHING) "You're funny, Zack."

OCTOBER 4, 1972 (EP. #2102)
Ada decided to set up a schedule for Steve's visits with Jamie so that it would not interfere with anyone's time. Steve was appreciative of Rachel's thoughtfulness when Ada explained that Rachel knows that Steve is upset over Alice's departure and wants him to see Jamie. Ada was disturbed to learn that Rachel met Steve at his office to settle their differences over Jamie and that everyone except for Robert was unaware of the encounter. Steve told Ada that he had to resolve things with Rachel because she refused to discuss the matter with John and failed to return the messages that he had left with Gerald for her. Steve hypothesized to Ada that Gerald would lose his job and the money he invested into the Fireside Inn should Steve's visitation arrangements with Jamie not work out and the restaurant went out of business. Pat told Jim that things have improved between her and John, despite the fact that John brings work home, stays up late to finish it, and occasionally returns to the office at night. Jim told Pat that Steve denied that he and Alice had a terrible fight and that he seemed as baffled by her departure as everyone else. Pat opined to Jim that Alice did not solve her issues by leaving town. Jim convinced Pat to contact Lenore because Alice may have confided her troubles with Steve to her. Gil told Ada that he excused Ted from reporting to him in person while Cindy was in the hospital and confessed that he is worried about Ted. Ada informed Gil that Ted is unaware that Rachel broke the agreement she and Ted made with Steve concerning Jamie and that Steve and Rachel had spent time together. Gil advised Ada to keep him abreast of the situation to prevent things from getting out of control any further. Pat was disappointed to learn that Alice had not contacted Lenore, who reassured Pat that Alice was a sensible person who would not do anything foolish. Robert and Lenore deduced that Steve did not know that Alice came to his office on the night that he and Robert worked late and Steve had an appointment with someone.

Gil: (Charles Durning, Exit Line) (to Ada) "There is. You keep in touch with me and let me know what's going on so we can keep it from getting out of hand, okay?"

Notes: Last appearance of Charles Durning as Gil McGowan.

OCTOBER 5, 1972 (EP. #2103)
Steve admitted to Robert that he lied about Alice's absence being temporary because he did not wish to burden Robert with his problems. Robert told Steve that Alice came to his office instead of waiting for him at the hospital on the night that Robert had a meeting with a contractor, Steve had an appointment, and Alice ended up leaving town. Gerald defiantly told Ada that he is looking out for Rachel's interests and that she does not benefit by allowing Steve to see Jamie without restrictions when Ada blamed Gerald for causing Rachel to contest the agreement she and Ted made with Steve. Ada warned Gerald that Steve might close down the Fireside Inn, which would leave Gerald without a job and unable to be repaid his loan on the restaurant. Gerald blamed Ada for siding with everyone else against Rachel, prompting Ada to proclaim that she refuses to let Rachel ruin her life because she was being influenced by Gerald, who does not know the difference between right and wrong. Mark confessed to Peggy that he counts on Bernice's company and was anxious for her to return. Linda accused Peggy of convincing Gloria to inquire into whether or not she is dating Zack and treating her like a child. Peggy told Linda that Ray is working diligently to redeem himself and that Zack had been a troublemaker since he was in high school, which infuriated Linda. Mark and Peggy agreed that they underestimated Lenore's abilities in keeping Steve's legal papers organized and filed properly. Pat approved of Mark's plan to surprise Bernice by flying to Washington to see her. John deterred Mark from leaving town by stressing that the firm had two upcoming court cases that required extensive preparation. Pat good-naturedly teased John for failing to understand the "pain of separation" that Mark feels without Bernice. Linda was pleased that Russ and David were thinking of appointing her to be the supervising nurse of the cardiac research unit. Linda told Steve that Alice went to meet him at his office once Linda relieved Alice of duty at the hospital.

OCTOBER 6, 1972 (EP. #2104)
Mark joked to Bernice that her curiosity over recent office matters should influence her to come back to Bay City earlier than she anticipated. Bernice grew thoughtful upon learning from Mark that John assigned him work to keep him busy, which stopped Mark from flying to Washington to see her. Detective Lieutenant Herman informed Steve and John that the police could not help them because lists of every form of transportation out of Bay City and photographs of Alice failed to unearth leads and there was no evidence to indicate that she was coerced into leaving town. Steve told John that Alice left the hospital to meet him at the office while he spoke to Rachel about the agreement for him to see Jamie in his apartment. John hypothesized that Alice had spotted him with Rachel, but Steve refused to believe that Alice would flee without giving him an opportunity to explain himself. Steve told John that he was confident that he and Alice could work things out should he get the chance to talk to her. Rachel lectured Ada for being worried that she was taking Jamie shopping as an excuse to prevent Steve from visiting him. Ada chastised Rachel for practically ignoring Ted and for taking advice from Gerald on handling her life. Rachel told Ada that she and Steve met to discuss Jamie in his apartment. Ada was stunned when Rachel insisted on handling Steve's visits with Jamie herself. John came home early so that he could read to the twins, help Pat bathe them, and spend time alone with Pat. Pat apologized to John for nagging him, wallowing in self-pity, and drinking excessively, though John warned that the next few months will be hectic at the firm. John got frustrated while he pretended to discuss business with Bernice over the phone so that Pat would not hear Bernice's declarations of love. Robert and Lenore questioned whether Alice had observed Steve and Rachel's meeting. Steve was thrilled when Rachel surprised him by bringing Jamie to see him. Rachel smiled while Steve tousled Jamie's hair and offered to take him to a toy shop.

Notes: Appearance by Joan Barnard, secretary at the Randolph law firm.

OCTOBER 9, 1972 (EP. #2105)
John was noncommittal when Pat asked him whether or not he would be home from work early and to remind Bernice of their luncheon date this afternoon. Pat was amenable when John reiterated that he was heading for a busy week in getting through the work that had been piling up over time. Bernice was ecstatic that John had picked her up at the airport and cleared his calendar so that they would have the entire morning to themselves. John told Bernice to call Pat since she could not keep their luncheon plans. Bernice suppressed her annoyance that Mark obtained her flight number by calling the Washington office in hopes of meeting her at the airport and declined Mark's breakfast invitation. Ted lamented to Ada that Belle does not eat, sleep, or leave her apartment and weeps while staring at pictures of Cindy. Ada graciously rejected Ted's offer to repay the money she has spent on Jamie. Ada told Ted that Alice may have cracked under the strain of losing her baby, the problems she and Steve had concerning Jamie, and Cindy's death. Pat declined Lenore's lunch invitation since she had already made plans with Bernice. Lenore opined that Pat was being unfair when she criticized Steve's decision to send Bernice to Washington without Mark and complained that Steve expected other people to adjust their schedules for him. Lenore denied Pat's assertion that her job is the most important thing in her life, insisted that she and Robert are friends, and that Robert was a positive influence on Wally. Pat was uncertain that John would accept Lenore's invitation for them to have dinner with her and Robert soon. Mark surmised to Lenore that Bernice likely forgot about her plans with Pat. Lenore convinced Robert to join her when she has dinner with John and Pat. Lenore confided to Mark that Pat has been distant and unfriendly towards her at times lately. Bernice claimed to Pat that she was swamped with work and asked that they reschedule their luncheon. Bernice told John that she is puzzled that Lenore knew about her return from Washington.

OCTOBER 10, 11, and 12, 1972: Pre-empted for American League Playoffs.

OCTOBER 13, 1972 (EP. #2106)
Gerald disagreed when Rachel bemoaned that Steve may not want to see Jamie while she is present and fears that Ada, Ted, or the Matthews family may conclude that she was taking advantage of Alice leaving Steve. Mary told Pat that she suspects that Steve was concealing something that would justify Alice's sudden departure. Pat groused to Mary that John is behind on work because Bernice was in Washington and that John would likely stay at the office late going forward. Pat told Mary she may have outgrown Lenore's friendship and prefers Bernice's company because she is supportive and nonjudgmental. Mary told Pat that she would be unhappy should anything come between Pat and Lenore. John and Bernice told Steve that they would not have to take extended business trips to the Washington office since Bernice hired a new attorney to run it. John and Steve debated the possibility that Alice had witnessed him talking to Rachel. Steve told John that he loathes being in the house without Alice and may move back into his old apartment. Pat asked John to remind Bernice that they have luncheon plans today. Steve urged John to help Pat with her problems while he still has a chance. Bernice told Pat that she and Mark would adjust because they both would have to work late for a while. Pat made Bernice squirm by proclaiming that she would leave John should she discover that he was having an affair. Bernice hinted to Pat that Lenore works closely with John and that Walter's behavior became erratic upon discovering that Lenore was involved with another man. Pat was disturbed by Bernice's theory that Lenore's house was in shambles because she had a terrible quarrel with Walter and that Lenore may be capable of things that no one would suspect of her. Gerald complained to Rachel that a woman was sitting alone at the bar nursing a drink since the Fireside Inn was supposed to be a family restaurant. The woman introduced herself as Janice Frame to Rachel, who offered to drive her to Steve's house so that she could see her brother.

(FIRESIDE INN, BAR, LATE AFTERNOON. JANICE FRAME IS SITTING AT THE END OF THE BAR WITH AN ALMOST EMPTY GLASS IN FRONT OF HER. SHE DOESN'T LOOK UP AS THE BARTENDER [HARRY] SLOWLY WIPES THE BAR AROUND HER GLASS AND MOVES OFF. SHE SEEMS VERY PREOCCUPIED AND DOESN'T NOTICE THAT THE BARTENDER HAS SIGNALED GERALD, AND MOTIONS TOWARD JANICE. GERALD NODS AND APPROACHES JANICE)
Gerald: "Hi."
Janice: (Victoria Thompson, Introduction Line) "Hello."
Gerald: "Are you expecting somebody?"
Janice: "Get lost."
Gerald: "Oh-."
Janice: "Just because I'm alone doesn't mean anyone can get chummy with me."
Gerald: "Excuse me."

Notes: First appearance of Victoria Thompson as Janice Frame.

OCTOBER 16, 1972 (EP. #2107)
Steve eventually immersed himself into work after he straightened up the living room, stared at a picture of Alice, and tried to relax while listening to music. Rachel told Steve that she came to the house without calling first because she had a surprise for him. Steve gradually recognized Janice, stretched out his hand, and clumsily embraced her. Rachel humbly accepted Janice's gratitude for driving her to Steve's house. Janice told Steve that Willis visited her when he passed through Las Vegas and that she held a variety of jobs while traveling to Los Angeles and San Diego because she had no reason to settle in one place. Steve explained that Alice had left town for a while when Janice mentioned learning about Alice by reading Emma's letter. Janice accepted Steve's offer for her to live in the guest room once Steve promised that she was not imposing on him, but Janice insisted on taking care of the cooking and cleaning for him. David suggested to Russ that they put patients through unusual physical situations to measure the effects of such exercises on the heart, which would make it easier to spot congenital heart damage in the future. Linda accepted Russ and David's offer to work as the nurse at their cardiac research unit. David tried to reassure Russ that Alice would support herself because she was a fine nurse. David advised Russ that Alice must cope with her problems without anyone's interference. Linda resisted Zack's kisses because she feared that they would be caught by Peggy or Gloria. Peggy was upset that Ray had lied to her about finding Zack with Linda at the house, despite that Linda promised that she would confess her romance with Zack to Peggy and Gloria. Peggy told Linda that she was too tired to argue with her and Ray about Zack's presence in Linda's life. Belle cried while showing Ada old pictures of Cindy as a child and thanked Rachel for letting Ted spend time with her. Steve and Janice reiterated their gratitude to Rachel for helping to arrange their reunion after years apart. Rachel offered her friendship to Janice.

Notes: Janice reveals that she was seven years old when Steve left the family's farm. She worked at a gambling casino in Las Vegas, and held various jobs at factories, restaurants, and department stores since leaving Chadwell at the age of seventeen.

OCTOBER 17, 1972 (EP. #2108)
Pat was evasive with a concerned Mary about her reasons for being desperate to get out of the house. Russ told Pat that he is preparing a presentation for the foundation that is funding the new cardiac research unit, which David and Russ hoped would improve and extend the lives of people like Cindy who had undetected heart conditions. Pat voiced her theory to Russ that Walter destroyed the Curtin living room in a rage after he learned something terrible about Lenore, drove his car off the road, and that Lenore is haunted by the incident and Walter's death. Russ tersely advised Pat to discuss her suspicions with Lenore instead of talking behind her back, prompting Pat to complain that no one pays attention to her anymore. Gerald sensed an opportunity for Rachel to benefit by helping Janice since she does not know anyone in town and Steve needed his family's support because Alice had left him. Gloria told Rachel that Peggy has a special interest in the Fireside Inn because Ted and Rachel were her first clients. Ray reiterated to Gloria that he made a promise to Linda to keep quiet about her romance with Zack despite that Gloria and Peggy disapprove of the relationship. Gloria was not pacified by Ray's advice that they ensure that Linda does not ruin her life, deemed it pointless to talk to Ray, and resolved to handle the situation on her own. Mary told Jim that she chose not to probe Pat over her reasons for leaving the house because she has been tense and irritable lately. Russ advised Jim and Mary that Pat seemed to be turning against Lenore and that she walked out of his apartment in the middle of a conversation in frustration with him. Jim and Russ tried to soothe Mary's anxieties over Alice's disappearance by stating that Alice must come to terms with her decision to leave Steve. Helen joked that Robert spared her from losing to Lenore at a game of scrabble by inviting Lenore to attend a Mozart concert with him. Russ left an urgent phone message with Helen because he needed to discuss Pat with Lenore right away.

OCTOBER 18, 1972 (EP. #2109)
Janice promised Steve that she does not get lonely while he was at his office. Ted met Janice when he came to speak to Steve about his arrangements to see Jamie. Steve advised Ted that Janice does not know anyone in town because he sensed that Ted was miffed that Rachel drove Janice to Steve's house after learning that she was his sister. Steve told Ted that Ada swore that Rachel would cooperate with the agreement and that Alice's schedule made it difficult for him to decide on the days that he wished to see Jamie. Ted insisted to Steve that Ada bring Jamie to his office because he does not want Steve and Rachel to see each other despite that Steve complimented Rachel's thoughtfulness for bringing Janice to the house. Steve explained to Janice that he invested money into the Fireside Inn for Ted and confessed that Rachel is the mother of his son, Jamie. Bernice told John that Pat consoled her over briefly being separated from Mark during their luncheon. John groused to Bernice that Pat suspects that he is interested in another woman. Bernice was troubled as John reflected that Pat does not seem interested in their house, the twins, socializing with old friends, and that Pat was not receptive to other people's input. Bernice acted upset that Pat and Lenore were estranged for John's benefit. Janice ruefully told Jim and Mary that the family would not get together without Emma's efforts and that she had hoped to meet Alice upon coming to Bay City. Steve was moved when Jim and Mary stated that he is still considered part of the family. Jim warned Steve that Alice might be humiliated should he hire a private detective to trace her whereabouts. Steve adamantly insisted to Jim and Mary that Alice's decision was irrational because nothing happened between them that would justify Alice's sudden departure. Russ told Lenore that Pat does not trust anyone anymore. Lenore agreed to talk to Pat per Russ's request. Bernice was pleased with herself for convincing John to talk to Lenore about Pat's troubles without telling Pat about it.

Janice: "How about another cup of coffee?"
Steve: "I've already had two, plus that enormous breakfast you cooked for me."
Janice: "Emma used to say if you ate a big breakfast, you could cope with anything during the day."
Steve: "Then I ought to have no problems today."

OCTOBER 19, 1972 (EP. #2110)
Pat declined Mary's offer to take her and the twins to the park to see the turning of the leaves because she had plans with Bernice. Mary disputed Pat's contentions that she was poor company for everyone. Gerald feigned making the connection that Janice was the woman nursing a drink at the bar after Ted probed Gerald on Janice coming to the Fireside Inn and receiving a ride from Rachel to Steve's house. Gerald harangued Ted for expecting him to track their customers, gossiping about Janice, and leaving him to run the restaurant by himself. Rachel prepared herself once Gerald warned her that Ted grilled him about Janice. Ted was appeased when Rachel explained that Janice was broke, nervous about seeing Steve, and Rachel was being helpful to a stranger in Bay City. Bernice coaxed Pat into helping her to finish a bottle of wine as Pat griped about John's objections to Pat entertaining people. Bernice reflected to Pat that Steve and Alice's troubles have made her indecisive about marriage. Pat told Bernice that Russ found Lenore's wedding ring on the floor of the living room on the night of Walter's death. Bernice insinuated to Pat that Lenore was riddled with guilt and that her actions disprove Lenore's claims that she was content with Walter. Pat took Bernice's suggestion that she confront Lenore with her suspicions to gauge her reactions. Janice dismissed Rachel's concerns about her feeling ill while lamenting that Steve was unhappy despite being rich, owning a luxurious house, and being married to Alice. Rachel badmouthed Mary and Alice to Janice for not understanding people who came from poor backgrounds. Janice apologized for prying once Rachel admitted that she and Steve conceived Jamie years ago, but are now married to other people. John was upset to find dirty dishes and an empty bottle of wine on the coffee table while Pat was sleeping on the couch. Mary deduced that John insisted on picking up the twins to spare her from seeing a drunk Pat, who was livid from overhearing the phone conversation.

OCTOBER 23, 1972 (EP. #2111)
Mark impulsively came to Bernice's place to take her out for breakfast, which angered John because he wanted to see Bernice. Steve conceded that everything had become meaningless since Alice left him when Robert started to discuss revisions on some blueprints with him. Robert tried to reassure Steve that Alice would contact him, but Steve maintained that he could not grasp the cause of Alice's sudden departure. Rachel recounted that she met Robert on the night that he and Steve were working late at the office. Rachel confided to Steve that she is worried about Janice because she is broke, ill from feeling fatigued, but does not want to trouble Steve because he is upset over Alice. Steve heeded Rachel's advice that Janice should see a doctor, expressed appreciation for Rachel's concern, and commented that it was nice to have Janice living with him. Bernice reminded John that she had spent every night with him since returning from Washington and voiced fears that Mark would grow suspicious because he resents John occupying Bernice's time. John was chagrined to learn that Pat kept quiet about having lunch with Bernice, reiterated that Bernice is taking a risk by being friends with Pat, and believed Bernice's lie that Pat finished the bottle of wine after she left the house. John told Bernice that Pat's drinking has become unbearable for him. Russ consulted with Linda on the ways that the new cardiac unit will treat patients, conduct research, and retain records. Steve made arrangements for Russ to examine Janice. Linda admonished Zack for coming to the hospital unannounced and for causing trouble between her and the family. Zack suggested to Linda that they take advantage of her new work schedule without Peggy and Gloria's knowledge. Steve advised Robert and Lenore that he could not join them to interview contractors because he wished to be present while Russ is giving Janice a medical checkup. John agreed to talk to Pat about having dinner with Lenore and Robert. Lenore told Robert that Bernice may be turning Pat against her.

OCTOBER 24, 1972 (EP. #2112)
Janice introduced herself to Ada, who remarked that Rachel had failed to mention that she had met Janice at the Fireside Inn on the day that she arrived in town. Ada declined Janice's offer to repay Rachel for her kindness by babysitting Jamie since Janice was not accustomed to having free time during the day. Janice listened intently as Ada revealed that Jamie does not know that Steve is his father and that Steve and Alice experienced problems that involved Jamie. Ada contradicted Rachel's assessment of Alice by insisting to Janice that she is a nice girl, the Matthews are fine people, and disbelieved Janice's theory that Alice is jealous of Rachel. Janice bade a hasty retreat after telling Ada that Alice was wrong to leave Steve without any notice and that he does not have a life without her. Linda told Russ that she is upset because Peggy and Gloria disapprove of her romance with Zack. Russ suggested that Linda openly air her disagreements with Gloria and Peggy instead of dating Zack in secret. Jim appreciated Linda's sentiments that the hospital staff misses Alice. Russ told Jim that he promised to examine Janice for Steve and that the new cardiac research unit occupies much of his time. Jim implored Russ to spend time with the family since Mary has been depressed because Alice left town and Pat is embroiled in personal issues. Gloria opined to Linda that Zack has not changed and that he could ruin Linda's life because he does not take life seriously. Linda threatened to move out after accusing Gloria of interfering in her personal affairs. Russ convinced Janice to come to the hospital for medical tests after not finding anything wrong with her during an examination and Steve offered to pay her medical bills. Janice commented to Steve that Russ seemed like a reserved man with many special qualities. Steve told a sympathetic and enamored Janice that Russ was once married to Rachel and that he had recently lost Cindy within days of getting married. Janice was intrigued as Steve's mused about everyone's lives changing drastically over the years.

OCTOBER 25, 1972 (EP. #2113)
Robert relayed his philosophy to Lenore that an architect should not lose sight of a project's objective while showing her some revised sketches. Pat tersely told Lenore that John had not talked to her about their tentative dinner plans, stated that she was uncertain of John's schedule, and acted dubious towards Lenore's enthusiasm over spending time with her. Lenore told Robert that Pat seemed annoyed with her over the phone. Ada chose to believe Rachel's assertions that she was honest with Ted about meeting Janice and taking her to the house to reunite with Steve. Rachel told Ada about Janice's poor background, boasted that Steve confided his early life to her on the night that Jamie was conceived, and proclaimed that Alice would not have left Steve had she known more about his background. Ada was speechless when Rachel stated that Alice was incapable of truly understanding Steve. Mark could not verify for Pat whether or not John was scheduled to appear in court when she came to the office to talk to John. Pat gladly accepted Mark's lunch invitation, remarked that Bernice is a good friend to her, and that she is thrilled by Mark and Bernice's blossoming romance. Russ and David went over Janice's medical history while preparing her to be admitted into the hospital for a physical checkup and medical tests. Janice readily agreed to be Russ and David's first research subject of the new cardiac research unit since she would be repaid for any necessary treatment and medication without causing Steve additional costs. Russ appreciated Janice's condolences on Cindy's death and participation in fulfilling his and David's mission to save the lives of cardiac patients. John claimed to Pat that he made appointments in the area of the courthouse after mixing up the dates of his scheduled appearances. Pat sarcastically commented on John's efforts to clear his calendar for Lenore while they discussed her dinner invitation. Robert noted Lenore's relief that John and Pat had finalized plans with them. Lenore remarked to Robert on her close friendship with Pat.

Notes: Appearance by Joan Barnard, secretary at the Randolph law offices. Starting with September 7, 1972, Joan may have been portrayed by Victoria Blankenship during on-screen and "voice only" appearances.

OCTOBER 26, 1972 (EP. #2114)
Lenore told Helen that she hopes that the special dinner would alleviate Pat's remote attitude towards her. Helen convinced Lenore to ask John and Pat to come to the house earlier than planned so that everyone could see Wally. Lenore joked that mothers arrange their daughters' lives in response to Helen purposely making plans with a friend so that she and Robert could be alone with John and Pat. Jim urged Pat to spend time with Mary, who cries frequently because she was distressed over Alice and does not have anyone to talk to since Jim and Russ work long hours during the day. Lenore grew puzzled when Pat was noncommittal to coming to her house at an earlier time and abruptly hung up the phone after claiming that one of the twins needed her attention. Ted told Gerald that Steve's arrangements to see Jamie have not changed since Alice left since Ted or Ada take the boy to see Steve. Gloria was satisfied when Ted unwittingly revealed that Zack visited Linda at the hospital. Linda pressured Zack to quickly select a movie for them to see so that they could get out of the house before Gloria or Peggy arrived home. Zack schemed to break a date with Linda after receiving a clandestine call from a man named Billy. John griped to Bernice that Pat behaves strangely about many things and tried to track him down at the courthouse since he was with Bernice instead of the office at the time. Bernice tried to quell John's concerns that the situation could explode in their faces should Pat learn about their affair. Robert and Lenore interposed when Pat unfavorably compared John to Robert in balancing their careers and personal lives and made an acerbic remark about John being comfortable in Lenore's house. Lenore was appalled when an intoxicated Pat confronted Lenore about the living room being in shambles and her wedding ring being thrown on the floor on the night of Walter's death because they fought bitterly over Lenore's supposed infidelity. Robert was bewildered when Pat downed a drink and John quietly went to help Lenore in the kitchen.

OCTOBER 27, 1972 (EP. #2115)
John remonstrated Pat for ruining their evening with Robert and Lenore by getting drunk. Pat mocked Lenore's charitable gesture of inviting them to dinner and accused John of being overly concerned with Lenore's feelings while ignoring her needs. John told Pat to quit indulging in self-pity and suggested that Lenore might accept Pat's apologies for her rudeness. Bernice fibbed to Pat that she was calling to remind John that she was taking a day off to handle personal matters. Pat made luncheon plans with Bernice so that they could talk freely about John and Pat's dinner with Robert and Lenore since Mary was present. Mary warned Pat not to neglect her old friends in favor of Bernice. John complained to Bernice that Pat offended Lenore in some way, the atmosphere during dinner was unbearable, and that they cut the evening short because Pat drank too much. Bernice suggested that John talk to Lenore since Pat blacked out memories of the previous night. Steve was relieved that Russ had not discovered anything medically wrong with Janice, approved of her decision to volunteer as a research subject for Russ and David, and offered Janice a job as a receptionist for his developing housing project. Janice wistfully opined to Steve that Russ was a nice, quiet man who rarely talks about Cindy. Rachel delighted Janice by paying her an unexpected visit. Steve apologized to Rachel for being stubborn towards her presence during his visits with Jamie and promised to being more accommodating to her. Lenore confided to Robert that Pat brought up personal things she had managed to suppress for months that has placed a strain on their friendship. Steve appreciated Lenore's offers to alleviate Janice's loneliness by befriending her and convince Janice to stay in Bay City. Bernice was intrigued when Pat explained that Lenore practically ignored her presence after their confrontation over the night of Walter's death. Pat defiantly stated that she had no intention of apologizing to Lenore and thanked Bernice for helping her realize that she had been a fool.

Notes: According to a handwritten note at the beginning of Act III of this script, the role of Janice Frame was temporarily played by Linda De Coff during this episode. De Coff originated the role of Laurie Hollisted on "The Secret Storm," from 1969-1970.

OCTOBER 30, 1972 (EP. #2116)
Steve explained that Janice dislikes being idle when Russ expressed relief that Lenore was getting acquainted with a restless and lonely Janice. Russ told Steve that they can create a schedule for Janice so that she can continue to have outpatient sessions with Russ and David for the cardiac unit's research initiatives and potentially work in Steve's office as a receptionist. Steve tried to heed Russ's advice not to abandon hope that Alice would contact him. Russ conceded to Lenore that he told Pat about finding Lenore's wedding ring on the floor because Pat was probing him on the living room being in shambles the night that Walter died. Lenore told Russ that Pat accused her of terrible things while she and John had dinner with Robert and Lenore. Russ hypothesized to Lenore that Pat drinks excessively because she cannot face her marital problems with John, started antagonizing Alice before she fled town, and refuses to confide in anyone. Lenore decided to discuss the matter with John since Mary was consumed with worry over Pat and Alice. Peggy informed Bernice that Lenore came to the office to speak with John about a personal issue. Peggy warned that Linda could retaliate by moving out should Gloria confront her about dating Zack behind her and Peggy's backs. Gloria proclaimed to Peggy that nothing will convince her that Zack is the kind of man that is suitable for Linda. Linda agreed to meet Zack at the drug store after she finishes her shift at the hospital. Belle told Ted that she quit her job taking care of Mrs. Jorgenson and avoids Ada and Mary because their daughters are still alive. Ted failed to comfort Belle, who wailed that she should have died instead of Cindy and that she is worthless, then quickly retreated into the bedroom and began to sob. Robert noted that Lenore had been edgy in anticipation of John's phone call and suggested that Bernice turned Pat against Lenore out of spite. John agreed to make arrangements with Lenore to talk about Pat privately because Lenore feared that Pat would resent such a meeting taking place.

OCTOBER 31, 1972 (EP. #2117)
Gerald casted doubt on Rachel's confidence that she could depend on everyone to be careful to ensure that an inquisitive Jamie does not start asking questions about his paternity. Rachel told Gerald that Ted does not know that she was taking Jamie back and forth between Ada's house and Steve's visits. Gerald hinted to Rachel that Jamie would have more fun at Steve's house instead of being entertained by models of houses and blueprints at his office. Ted told Rachel that Belle quit working for Mrs. Jorgenson, does not leave her apartment, and spends time staring at old pictures of Cindy. Ted told Rachel that he sympathizes with Belle, who had experienced little happiness in life because his father died, Ted left town for several years, and Cindy died. Rachel did not want Steve to know about their financial problems when Ted considered asking Steve to lower the monthly payments towards his loans so that he could support Belle. Ted grew thoughtful when Rachel resolved to figure out a way to help Belle without requesting Steve's assistance. Jim told Mary that worrying about Alice's whereabouts would not help matters. Mary insisted to an incredulous Jim that Steve was purposely concealing information from them that would explain Alice's motivations for leaving Steve and abruptly leaving town. Mary lamented to Jim that she only feels useful by babysitting the twins because Pat refuses to confide her problems to anyone. Ada reflected on the ways in which she dealt with Ernie's death while Rachel talked about the impact of Cindy's death on Belle. Ada quelled Rachel's suspicions of Mary's invitation to have lunch with Ada in a few days. Lenore told Mary that Pat had grown to dislike her and that she insinuated that Walter knew of Lenore's supposed infidelity while John and Pat had dinner with Robert and Lenore. Lenore admitted to Mary that she distrusts Bernice, but could not fathom any reason that Bernice would turn Pat against her. Mary told Lenore that Pat must not betray her old friends and vowed that she would talk to Pat about Bernice.

Ada: "So long, Mary." (SHE HANGS UP [THE PHONE]).
Rachel: "What is Mary Matthews after?"
Ada: "Rachel, some people just want to see their friends. She's not after anything. She just needs company."

NOVEMBER 1, 1972 (EP. #2118)
Pat declined Mary's invitation to accompany her and the twins to a flower show and lunch at the park's cafeteria since she had struggled to get motivated that morning and sprained her ankle getting into the car. Mary was shocked by Pat's contention that she had good reason to dislike Lenore when Mary mentioned that Lenore was bewildered by Pat's negative attitude towards her. Pat told Mary that she mustered the courage to question Lenore on certain things, then infuriated Mary by making veiled remarks about distrusting Lenore's honesty and friendship without elaborating on them and denied that her drinking had anything to do with confronting Lenore. Mary failed to reason with Pat, who defended Bernice's honesty, refused to acknowledge that Bernice had turned Pat against Lenore, and insisted that she could choose her own friends. Pat accused Mary of patronizing her like a child, using the twins as an excuse to spy on her, and demanded that Mary leave the house immediately. Mark helped Peggy revise a legal contract for a client. Zack insolently told Peggy that Linda should date anyone she chooses in response to Peggy bluntly stating that she and Gloria disapprove of his and Linda's relationship and that she could get into trouble because Linda is naive and impressionable. Zack balked at divulging the details after insinuating to Peggy that he knows some of the guys that used to hang around Ray before he supposedly started to redeem himself. Russ told Mary that he regrets repeating things to Pat that Lenore had confessed to him about the night of Walter's fatal car accident. Mary implored Russ to reason with Pat because they should not allow Pat to destroy her friendship with Lenore due to unfounded suspicions. Janice asked Jim and Mary to visit Steve because he had grown despondent at the house since Alice moved out. John harangued Pat for driving Mary, Alice, and Lenore away by antagonizing them. Pat groused to John that she was foolish to expect that she could state anything negative about Lenore to him.

NOVEMBER 2, 1972 (EP. #2119)
Bernice fretted to John that she wishes that they did not have to worry about people seeing them together in public. John informed Bernice that he made plans to lunch with Lenore in hopes that they could resolve the trouble between her and Pat. Bernice told John that she would ensure that Mark does not take her to Tallboys since she did not want to see John with another woman. Gerald urged Rachel not to push Steve into letting her stay at the house while he visits Jamie, but applauded Rachel for taking the initiative to handle personal things on her own. Rachel told Gerald that she was not worried about Jamie being alone with Steve at the house because he and Alice had separated. Gerald failed to convince Rachel that Steve would become more friendly towards her since Rachel kept company with Janice and made special efforts for him to see Jamie. Rachel instructed Gerald to fib that she took Jamie to the aquarium should Ted inquire into her and Jamie's whereabouts. Bernice was pleased with herself after inviting Pat to have lunch with her at Tallboys. Mark was upset that Bernice had ostensibly planned to see a college friend instead of having lunch with him. Rachel thanked Steve for showing Jamie the ways in which a person could live and waxed philosophically about the empathy between people who share similar childhoods. Steve felt that introducing Jamie to Janice would confuse the child and influence him to question his own family. Steve and Rachel were mortified when Mary paid him an impromptu visit. Mary sarcastically commented to Steve that Janice must have been mistaken to believe that he was lonely and bade a hasty retreat. Lenore told John that Pat made insinuations about her and is convinced that she is Pat's enemy because of something that happened on the night of Walter's death. John lamented to Lenore that his hopes that Bernice could help Pat to stop drinking had been dashed. Bernice smiled triumphantly when Pat insisted on leaving Tallboys after spotting John and Lenore together at a table.

(FRAME LIVING ROOM)
Steve: "In a little while we'll go down to the brook and see if the fish are still there, okay, Tiger?"
Jamie: (Aiden McNulty, Exit Line) "Let's go now."
Rachel: "Mr. Frame and I haven't finished our coffee yet, Jamie."
Steve: (TAKING JAMIE BY THE HAND AND LEADING HIM TO THE DOOR) "Tell you what, Jamie...you can play out here on the terrace and I'll be with you in a minute." (JAMIE GOES OUT AND STEVE WATCHES HIM FOR A MINUTE THROUGH THE DOOR. RACHEL, FROM HER PLACE BY THE WINDOW, WATCHES STEVE) "He's quite a guy, isn't he?"

Notes: Last appearance of Aiden McNulty as Jamie Frame.

NOVEMBER 3, 1972 (EP. #2120)
Pat insolently told John that he makes such a mystery out of his life that she must fill in the gaps with her imagination to satisfy her curiosity over the ways in which he spends his day. Pat carped to John that he was pretending that they had not grown apart and fled into the kitchen. Mary told Jim that Pat does not want her to babysit the twins anymore after they got into an argument and discouraged Jim from directly confronting Pat because she gets hostile quickly. Jim surmised that Mary was jumping to the hasty conclusion that Alice left Steve after finding him with Rachel and refused to believe that Steve and Rachel are hiding Alice's reason for fleeing town. Mary resolved to talk to Ada despite Jim's warning that the situation would upset Ada and opinion that Steve and Alice must resolve their problems without anyone's interference. Ray complained to Ted that Peggy was avoiding his phone calls because he kept a promise not to tell Peggy and Gloria that he found Linda and Zack together at the Metcalf household. Rachel lied to Ted that she arranged for Steve to pick Jamie up at school and bring him home so that Ada was not burdened by their schedules and Ted could concentrate on Belle and managing the Fireside Inn. Gerald advised Rachel to quit caring about other people's opinions since Steve was ecstatic over seeing Jamie regularly. Rachel told Gerald that she dreaded facing interrogations from Ada and Ted once Mary mentions finding Rachel at Steve's house to Ada. Russ accepted David's offer for him to visit the Baker Heart Research Center in Houston to examine its setup. David and Russ discharged Janice from the hospital. Janice informed Rachel that she was staying in town to participate in Russ and David's research efforts. Russ chastised Pat for dwelling on the night of Walter's death, falsely believing that Lenore was keeping secrets from her, and that Pat was being self-destructive. Pat fantasized that John and Lenore acknowledged their affair at Tallboys and hurled her glass at the window in a blind rage.

(...[PAT] WALKS TO THE BAR, AND FILLS HER GLASS AGAIN)
Pat: (to herself) "If people knew what I knew about Lenore, they wouldn't be defending her all the time..." (DISSOLVE TO: FLASHBACK OF RESTAURANT SCENE IN #2119. JOHN AND LENORE ARE TALKING AT THE RESTAURANT WITHOUT BEING AWARE OF PAT'S SEEING THEM. AS WE REACH THE END OF THE ACTUAL SCENE, THE VISUAL ELEMENTS BECOME DISTORTED. LENORE LEANS ACROSS THE TABLE AND KISSES JOHN FULL ON THE MOUTH).
John: "Darling, people can see us."
Lenore: "I don't care who sees us, I don't care who knows..."
John: "We can't do this to Pat."
Lenore: "I won't let Pat or anyone else stand in our way. I've wait too long, all these years...first because of Walter, and now because of Pat..."
John: "I know darling, just be patient a little longer."
Lenore: "Don't think about Pat...just think about me..." (DISSOLVE TO PAT AND SHE HURLS GLASS AT WINDOW)

Production Notes: The fantasy sequence that was used as Pat's additional flashback to Act IV (John and Lenore being at Tallboys) was pre-taped on October 20, 1972, which was the production date of the November 2, 1972 episode (#2119).

NOVEMBER 6, 1972 (EP. #2121)
John arranged to discuss the performance clause within Steve's housing project's contracts with Robert and Lenore after he attends a scheduled appointment. Pat contemptuously told John that she was certain that he could invent an excuse to explain her reasons for dodging Lenore's request to talk to Pat over the phone, which left John baffled and chagrined. John mused to Bernice that he enjoys being in her apartment because everything is quiet and peaceful. Bernice surmised to John that Pat would not be rude to Lenore without justification, cautioned John against involving outside parties in Pat's issues with Lenore, and emphasized that she keeps herself clear of other people's quarrels. Lenore fretted to Robert that she could not quit contemplating the cause of Pat turning against her despite the fact that Lenore had never intentionally hurt Pat. Robert urged Lenore to confront Bernice with her suspicions or confide in Steve about her troubles with Pat. Lenore told Robert that she was remiss for thinking that her estrangement from Pat was a nightmare and that she would remember their dear friendship. John encouraged Peggy to accept a job offer she received from the Attorney's Alliance in Detroit, who were impressed with Peggy's work on a case that involved tenants of an apartment complex. Peggy took John's suggestions that she ask Mark to assume some of her clients and hypothesized that Peggy might have more influence over Linda since she would not be living at the Metcalf household anymore. Steve advised Robert and Lenore that he would like Janice to tackle the more routine office duties that Lenore handles for Robert. Lenore told Robert that Steve's family seemed to be very independent and that Janice could take care of Steve due to Alice's absence. Russ informed Jim and Mary that David arranged for him to conduct observation at the Baker Heart Research Center in Houston for two weeks. Mary expressed fears to Jim and Russ that Pat's problems with John and Lenore were going to worsen over time.

Notes: Lenore mentions that Janice has held jobs since she graduated from high school and estimated that she is in her early twenties.

NOVEMBER 7, 1972 (EP. #2122)
Mary lamented to Ada that Jim tries to maintain a cheerful attitude for her benefit because she is struggling to cope with Alice's disappearance. Mary told Ada that she was embarrassed when she stopped by Steve's house to visit him, that Steve and Rachel had just finished lunch, and that Jamie was playing outside. Ada reassured Mary that she did not know that Rachel had brought Jamie to Steve's house after school and conceded that fighting with Rachel becomes a losing battle sometimes. Mary and Ada surmised that Steve and Rachel did not intend to keep the agreement that they are not to see each other alone. Ada disagreed with Mary's conclusion that Steve was hiding the fact that Alice had left him because he was secretly seeing Rachel. Mary told Ada that Steve's actions had confirmed her reservations towards Alice marrying him and theorized that Rachel was the key to unearthing Alice's reason for leaving Steve. Gerald apologized to Janice for his attitude during their first encounter since he did not want to offend Steve, who is the principal investor in the Fireside Inn. Janice told Rachel that the staff treated her well at the hospital and that Russ was a compassionate man. Rachel accepted Janice's offer to babysit Jamie occasionally since she yearned for Jamie to know Steve's family and figured that Janice's presence would ease Ted and Ada's objections towards Rachel being at Steve's house. Linda told Zack that Peggy accepted a job in Detroit, that she kept Gloria from getting too strict with her, and was grateful to Gloria for putting her through nursing school. Zack vowed to improve Ray's spirits upon learning that Peggy was upset with Ray for keeping quiet about catching Zack and Linda at the house alone. Zack told Linda that he wants to get Ray's advice because he admires him. Rachel told Ada that she should not lie to Jamie about Ted being his father for the rest of his life. Ada was speechless when Rachel proclaimed that Steve could spend time with her and Jamie without being concerned by other people's opinions.

NOVEMBER 8, 1972 (EP. #2123)
Steve admitted to Janice that he missed her while she was in the hospital and was appreciative that Janice cleans the house and cooks their meals. Steve explained to Janice that he and Alice had many problems because of Rachel, that he does not intend to encourage Rachel to come to the house, and that an agreement for him to see Jamie regularly was made under the condition that Rachel would not be present. Janice admitted to Steve that she offered to babysit Jamie for Rachel because she works long hours at the Fireside Inn. Steve decided that he would make arrangements with Ted and Ada so that Janice could bring Jamie to his office, Steve would occasionally drive Jamie to the house, and Janice could take him home. Steve urged Janice not to invent excuses by assuming that Robert and Lenore might resent working with her. Robert was amused when Bernice recalled that he and Lenore had dinner with John and Pat and attended a concert with Lenore. John and Robert stressed that it is difficult to maintain a social life when a person goes through tragedies in response to Bernice's musings about Lenore withdrawing from life after Walter died. Robert told John that it had become obvious that Pat was not friendly with Lenore anymore. John bemoaned to Robert that Pat came to the irrational conclusion that Lenore was her worst enemy and that no one could reason with Pat about it. Peggy informed Ray that she accepted a job with a law firm in Detroit working with potential clients who cannot afford legal help. Ray was relieved that Peggy respected him for keeping a promise to Linda and offered to keep an eye on Linda for Peggy. Gloria invited Ray to have dinner with the family since it would be Peggy's last night in Bay City. Mark jumped to John's defense when an intoxicated Pat criticized his dedication to his career. Pat vehemently denied Mark's assertion that she was close friends with Lenore. Mark decided to drive Pat home as she wailed that she had been a fool for trusting Lenore and began to sob uncontrollably.

Gloria: "Ray, can you stay for dinner with us?"
Ray: "Well..."
Peggy: (Exit Line) "Please stay, Ray."
Gloria: "It's just the family, Ray, but I'd like to have you here with us on Peggy's last night, and so would she." (FADE OUT)

Notes: Last appearance of Micki Grant as Peggy Harris Nolan.

NOVEMBER 9, 1972 (EP. #2124)
John warned Bernice that Steve and Pat might become suspicious should he continue to be late for business appointments. Bernice urged John to talk to Pat about Lenore, but John maintained that Pat changes the subject each time he tries to discuss Lenore with her. Bernice acknowledged that Pat becomes indiscreet when Mark expressed concerns over an intoxicated Pat coming to the office looking for John last night. Mark told Bernice that Pat griped about John's time being occupied, that Mark should have been with Bernice instead of working late, and that Lenore is romantically involved with John. Bernice told Mark that John fails to provide his contact information when he has outside appointments, but Mark emphasized that John was not required to account for his whereabouts and quickly dismissed Bernice's remarks as speculation and gossip. Mark secured Bernice's promise that she would not mention their conversation to Pat. Robert agreed to get acquainted with Janice and to give her a tour of the offices. Janice told John that she would be working with Robert and Lenore and that she was living with Steve at the house. Steve told John that he wants Janice to handle the transportation for Jamie because he wanted to avoid fighting with Ted and Ada about Rachel being alone with Steve. John was somewhat pacified when Steve promised John that he would ensure that Janice does not reveal Jamie's true parentage to him. Bernice advised Pat not to openly talk to anyone about John and Lenore's supposed affair until she has found solid proof. Lenore offered to take memos that they had received from the Washington office to John that Steve had found. Pat insolently told John that she came to apologize for embarrassing Mark by coming to the office drunk. John was shocked when Pat retreated from the office upon Lenore's arrival. Lenore bluntly asked Bernice whether or not she is turning Pat against her. Bernice arrogantly called Lenore's bluff by daring her to substantiate the claims that Walter had made about her to Lenore.

NOVEMBER 10, 1972 (EP. #2125)
Ted tried unsuccessfully to convince a despondent Belle to leave her apartment, resume her job working for Mrs. Jorgenson, and to become social again. Ada accused Rachel of being unfair and dishonest to Ted by taking Jamie over to see Steve alone and threatened to reveal the truth to Ted. Ada informed Ted that he may get assigned a new parole officer because Gil was offered a job as a detective in the police force. Ray angered Zack by suggesting that he was a bad influence on Linda. Helen and Lenore tended to a sick Wally. Ted confided his concerns over Belle isolating herself from the world to a sympathetic Ada. Zack got acquainted with three of Ray's former associates named Jake Barnes, GeeGee, and Perry but tried to assure Linda that they were not dangerous. Jim was discomfited when Lenore confide to him about her recent troubles with Pat. Rachel complained to Gerald that Ada interferes in her personal life and that they had been fighting frequently lately. Robert and Lenore were pleased with Janice's performance during her first day working with them on Steve's housing development project. Rachel was elated when Steve invited her and Jamie to attend an ice show, but became chagrined when Steve decided to invite Janice to join them. Lenore was plagued by nightmares that centered around the events that led to Lenore discovering that Walter had murdered Wayne. Ray was upset that Zack was hanging out with his old associates and sensed that they would cause trouble for Zack. Mark confided in Bernice about his parents and their unhappy marriage.

Production Notes: Flashbacks used during this episode included:
January 21, 1972 (EP. #1923), Lenore's voice reading Bernice's note she placed inside an envelope containing her scarf.
February 18, 1972 (EP. #1943), Lenore retrieving the envelope with the scarf and burning it in the fireplace as Wally started crying.

Notes: Last appearance of Janet Ward as Belle Clark.

NOVEMBER 13, 1972 (EP. #2126)
Rachel carped to Gerald that Ada threatened to tell Ted that she had been taking Jamie to see Steve and that she cannot go home without getting into fights with Ada about it. Gerald urged Rachel to stand firm regarding Jamie's transportation to Steve's visits instead of fearing Ted's reaction and Ada's objections. Gerald stormed out of the dining area rather than continue to argue with Ted and Ray and face criticism from them about cutting expenses to manage the restaurant. Ray admitted to Ted that he had become irritable since Peggy's departure and lamented that their relationship never recovered once Peggy learned that Ray knew about Linda seeing Zack. Ray graciously declined Ted's offer to give him time off so that he could go to Detroit and straighten things out with Peggy. Ted lambasted Rachel for breaking their agreement once she admitted that she had been taking Jamie to see Steve during their visits. Rachel accused Ted of fighting with her every time he does not get his way, recruiting Ada to take his side, and restricting the ways in which she and Jamie could live their lives. Gerald seethed when Zack, Jake Barnes, GeeGee, and Perry came into the Fireside Inn to have dinner and requested to speak with Ray immediately. Jake reminded Perry and GeeGee that they must recruit Ray to carry out their plans because Zack is inexperienced. Ray admonished Zack for associating with thugs and stated that he himself had become more selective about the people in which he kept company. Jake cryptically mused to Zack, GeeGee, and Perry that Ray would change his mind about getting involved with them in time. Lenore told Helen that Pat made insinuations to her about the night that Walter died. Helen reassured Robert that Lenore could use his company to ease her depression. Robert was puzzled by Lenore's refusal to explain the reasons that she does not trust Bernice. Lenore recalled taking out her scarf from an envelope, throwing it into the fireplace, and swearing that Wally must never know that Walter was a murderer.

NOVEMBER 14, 1972 (EP. #2127)
Pat sarcastically told John that he should write an appointment on his calendar to have dinner with his family in response to John's uncertainty over the time that he would be home. John chastised Pat for failing to apologize to Lenore, insulting people, and ignoring Lenore the last time Pat came to the law office. Pat angrily told John not to apologize to anyone on her behalf, prompting John to point out that Pat seemed incapable of being self-sufficient. Jim remonstrated Pat for making Mary feel unwelcome in the Randolph household. Pat groused to Jim that Mary criticizes everything she does and tries to dictate the people whom she should befriend, then Pat scoffed at the notion that Lenore cares about her. Jim laid into Pat for making things more difficult for Mary and emphasized that spending time with the twins helps Mary cope with Alice's whereabouts being unknown. Pat proclaimed to Jim that she was not turning against anyone and was fighting to keep her head above water. Gil compared Ada's efforts to refrain from interfering in Rachel's life or risk her moving out to Gil's job of rehabilitating his parolees. Ada was touched when Gil promised to help Ted whether or not he remains a parole officer or accepts a promotion to become a detective for the police force. John harangued Pat for upsetting Lenore by behaving rudely to her and making snide remarks each time Lenore's name is mentioned to her. Pat theorized to John that Walter ransacked the living room because he discovered that Lenore had been unfaithful to him and accused John of being biased against her in favor of Lenore. Ada told Gil about Ted's issues with Rachel over the arrangements for Steve to see Jamie. Gil promised Ada that he would ensure that Ted does not commit any acts that could violate the terms of his parole. Robert told Steve that Janice has become a fine addition at the office. Steve was too consumed with thoughts of Alice to discuss Robert's dismay over Lenore and Pat's estrangement. Jim and Mary were shocked to receive a letter from Alice.

(IN THE DOWNS' HOUSEHOLD)
Ada: "Well, Gil...I mean, Mr. McGowan."
Gil: (Dolph Sweet, Introduction Line) "I liked it better the first time. Ada, how are you?"

Notes: First appearance of Dolph Sweet as Gil McGowan. Gil mentions that he has a son who is married with two children named Chris and Emily who live in Oregon.

Production Notes: Gil and Ada's scenes in this episode were originally slated to air on November 8 and 13, 1972, but were cut and rescheduled for an unknown reason. These were Dolph Sweet's first scenes in the role of Gil McGowan. Therefore, it is possible that the change was due to Sweet's availability at the time. A special filming schedule took place on October 31, 1972 to tape these scenes, which consisted of Dolph Sweet and Constance Ford.

NOVEMBER 15, 1972 (EP. #2128)
Jim and Mary were floored to receive a letter from Alice that was post-marked New York, but did not include a return address. Jim advised Mary not to jump to conclusions as he read Alice's letter, which stated that she must accept the fact that Mary's reservations about Steve were correct and that she should not have married him, that she left because Steve betrayed her, that she had recovered after having a few bad weeks, and asked Jim and Mary for patience while she gets settled and could contact them. Mary was resolute in her belief that Steve knows the reason for Alice's departure and has been keeping secrets from them, but Jim countered that Steve had the right to read Alice's letter and provide explanations for her claims. Gerald lambasted Ted for almost costing them regular patrons of the Fireside Inn by forgetting to put reservations in the appointment book and warned Ray not to let his personal life interfere with his job. Ray tried to reassure Gerald that Zack would not bring disreputable men like Jake to the restaurant again. Ray told Ted that he is upset that Zack was hanging around Jake and his cohorts because he promised Peggy that he would look after Linda once she had moved away. Ted demanded that Rachel cancel plans for her and Jamie to see an ice-show with Steve. Rachel sharply advised Ted that he had no right to be suspicious and was creating unnecessary problems because Steve invited Janice to join him, Rachel, and Jamie for the occasion. Linda got defensive on Zack's behalf when Ray suggested that she end their relationship because Zack was headed for trouble and could ruin her life in the process. Gloria was puzzled that Linda refused to divulge the details of her talk with Ray. Gerald reminded Ted that Steve earned the right to see Jamie by investing in the Fireside Inn and that Rachel was in charge of Jamie. Steve and Janice compared Jim favorably to their father and agreed that Jamie must be protected from the trauma that they endured as children. Jim gave Steve the letter that Alice wrote to him and Mary to read.

(RACHEL ENTERS [THE FIRESIDE INN] WITH JAMIE)
Ray: "Hi, there, Jamie."
Jamie: (Tyler Mead, Introduction Line) "Hello, Mr. Scott."
Ray: "Been a long time since I've seen you--"

Notes: First appearance of Tyler Mead as Jamie Frame.

NOVEMBER 16, 1972 (EP. #2129)
Jim stared out of the living room window as Steve began to read Alice's letter. Jim believed Steve's assertions that he was unaware of Alice's reason for leaving him and did nothing to betray her, but emphasized that Alice would not feel betrayed without just cause. Steve groused that Mary objected to his marriage to Alice and has turned against him, but Jim argued that Mary accepted him into the family once they married and is unhappy because Alice fled town without providing anyone with her whereabouts. Jim told Steve that he trusts that he would not deliberately hurt Alice. Steve confessed to Jim that Rachel came to his office unannounced and insisted on talking to him in his apartment about Jamie since Robert was working late, but Steve refused to consider the possibility that Alice found out about the meeting. Steve lamented to Jim that he wrongly assumed that Alice would be fair and trust his actions. Mark bought Bernice's lie that she was too exhausted from work to entertain him at her apartment. Lenore's musings about Wally choosing his own profession prompted Robert to recount that his father had deterred him from being an architect. Robert warned Lenore that Wally may resent her once he grows up should Lenore withhold the fact that Walter betrayed his friends and profession by getting involved with Wayne in shady dealings. Lenore insisted that Walter's secrets are safe because Bernice would be forced to implicate herself by exposing Walter. Janice stirred Steve's ire by asserting that Alice was incapable of understanding him because of their different backgrounds, that Alice was an unsuitable wife for him, and that he was naive for thinking that Alice would return because she left her personal effects in the house. John escaped through the service door in the kitchen when Bernice unexpectedly received a visit from a drunk Pat. Pat declined Bernice's offer to drive her home, then went on a diatribe about men being unfaithful to their devoted wives. Pat surmised to Bernice that John was likely with Lenore and not at home waiting for her.

NOVEMBER 17, 1972 (EP. #2130)
John berated Pat for failing to provide her whereabouts, wandering around town while drinking, and being nonsensical once she got home. Pat told John that she failed to curb her drinking because he is never home, then implored John not to criticize her. John lectured Pat for turning against everyone, retorted that he could find peace of mind at the office, and stormed out as Pat leaned against the doorway in a forlorn state. Bernice tried to reassure Mark that she was not annoyed with him for calling last night, but was noncommittal towards Mark's invitation to have lunch or dinner with him. Pat apologized to Bernice for coming to her place intoxicated and complained that she finds living in the Randolph household unbearable. Bernice promised Pat that she would not tell John about Pat's visit to her apartment and swore that she does not discuss Pat with anyone. Mark joked to Bernice that her call with Pat sounded mysterious. Robert agreed to deliver contracts for Lenore to review since she was staying home due to feeling ill. Robert was pleased that Janice was not lonely living with Steve, had befriended Rachel, and enjoyed the ice show she attended with Steve, Rachel, and Jamie. Bernice advised Robert that she would deliver contracts to Lenore directly from the office once Bernice obtained John's signatures. John confided to Bernice about the fight he had with Pat. Bernice suggested that John bring the contracts to Lenore so that they could figure out the cause of Pat's alcoholism. Bernice phone Pat to tell her that John and Lenore's planned meeting at the Curtin residence would provide Pat with proof that they are romantically involved. Pat asked Mary to babysit the twins since she urgently needed to run an errand. Lenore asked John to bring a stuffed animal upstairs to Wally's bedroom while she tended to the boy. Pat spotted John and Lenore coming out of the bedroom and laughing as they re-entered the living room from an outside window. Pat accidentally knocked over a rake that was propped against a wall as she attempted to flee Lenore's yard.

Notes: Wally's stuffed animal was a teddy bear named Ferdinand. The portion of Act IV, which consisted of John and Lenore coming from the bedroom and laughing as they returned to the living room was saved for replay in a subsequent episode.

NOVEMBER 20, 1972 (EP. #2131)
Lenore dismissed the noise that the rake made from being knocked over after failing to catch Pat in the yard and apologized to John for the interruption. Pat leaned against the corner of the Curtin's residence while sobbing uncontrollably, then regained her composure and hurried away from the house. Rachel told Gerald that taking Jamie to the ice show made her realize that Jamie should go on similar outings like to the movies and the circus with both of his biological parents. Gerald sheepishly urged Rachel not to dwell on the past and ensure that Jamie has a good childhood in response to Rachel's laments that Ada could not take her out because she worked long hours to provide for Rachel and raised her alone. Rachel told Gerald that Steve has been polite and considerate lately, but fretted that Steve occasionally acts as though he does not care whether or not Rachel was around. Robert insisted that he and Lenore are too busy to engage in gossip when Bernice insinuated that Lenore keeps Robert abreast of John and Pat's issues. Pat called Bernice from a cocktail lounge and broke into sobs while telling Bernice that she was right about John and Lenore having an affair, but could not bring herself to divulge details over the phone. Bernice slammed down the phone upon realizing that Pat's call had been disconnected because she failed to deposit more money into it. Lenore concluded to John that she must talk directly to Pat to uncover the source of Pat's hostility towards her. John admitted to Lenore that Mary, Bernice, and Robert have not been successful in helping Pat to quit drinking. Lenore resolved to talk to Pat after telling John that Pat's animosity towards her involves the living room being in shambles on the night of Walter's death. John agreed to keep mum about his luncheon with Lenore, who feared that Pat would conclude that John and Lenore were plotting against her. A bartender felt sympathy for Pat, who spilled a drink while fumbling in her purse for money to pay the bartender and wailed that no one cares about her well-being anymore.

NOVEMBER 21, 1972 (EP. #2132)
An impatient Bernice asked Joan to tell her once John had arrived at work and chose not to leave her name when Mary answered her call to the Randolph household. John was immediately contrite after snapping at Bernice, who pretended to be surprised that Robert had not delivered the contracts to Lenore personally. Bernice unsuccessfully tried to probe John on Lenore's course of action in settling her differences with Pat since John maintained that it would easier for the women by getting the fewest amount of people involved in the situation. John told Bernice that he was optimistic that Lenore and Pat would resolve their issues. Bernice convinced John to have dinner with her this evening. Mary told John that Pat impulsively asked her to babysit the twins because she was anxious to get out of the house and has not returned yet. John fibbed to Mary that he was working late and would contact Pat soon. Bernice kept mum as John expressed concern that Pat had not returned home yet. Pat left the cocktail lounge with dignity after the bartender refused to continue serving her drinks. Rachel informed Gerald that she is picking up Jamie from school and hopes that Steve and Janice could join them while Jamie enjoys playing in the woods behind Steve's house. Gerald smiled in satisfaction when Rachel asserted that she does not care whether or not Ted objects to her taking Jamie to see Steve. Gerald told Ada that she would not have to get Jamie since Rachel went to do it herself. Gerald watched as Ray begrudgingly fixed a drink for Pat. Helen was touched that Robert gifted Lenore with a bouquet of flowers. Robert persuaded Lenore to contact Pat to arrange a discussion right away. Mary advised Lenore that John and Pat are currently out of the house. Pat declined Gerald's offer to escort her out of the Fireside Inn after he stopped Ray from serving her any more drinks. A tipsy Pat stumbled onto the ground behind another car after noticing that she had left her bag and keys at the restaurant as the car started to back out of a parking spot.

Production Notes: Act IV of this episode includes a location sequence that took place in the parking lot of the Fireside Inn. It was pre-taped on November 1, 1972 and was filmed outside of the studio. The sequence featured Beverly Penberthy (Pat) and two couples, with the two males being named Rocky and Pete and a female named Glenda.

NOVEMBER 22, 1972 (EP. #2133)
Gerald mused to Ray that women who hang around bars could cause a restaurant like the Fireside Inn to earn a bad reputation. Rachel told Ada that she picked up Jamie from school because she was unaware that Mary had cancelled her luncheon with Ada to babysit the twins for Pat. Ada initially approved of Rachel's plans to spend the day with Jamie. Rachel insolently told Ada that Ted knows that she was taking Jamie to see Steve, that Ted should leave if he refuses to abide by Rachel's wishes, and proclaimed that she would not allow anyone to interfere in her life. Ada swore to Rachel that she would not let Jamie get caught between Steve and Ted's opposing wishes. Rachel stormed out of the house once Ada thwarted her plans to take Jamie to Steve's house and swore that Rachel could not use Jamie to carry out her schemes. Nurse Harriet Sullivan learned from an attendant that a car had backed over Pat. Dr. Raymond examined Pat, despite that special permission needed to be obtained to admit Pat into the hospital since she was not carrying identification. Mary told Jim that Pat was excited and secretive about something that she needed to handle, that she has not returned home yet, and opined that Pat seemed unstable. Jim failed to deter Mary from contacting Bernice since Pat spends the most time with her now. John agreed to return to Bernice's apartment once he has a meeting with Steve. Bernice agreed to call Mary should Pat contact her. John rushed to the Randolph house due to Mary's concerns for Pat's welfare. Gerald promised Rachel that he would think of a way so that Ada could not stand in the way of Rachel taking Jamie to Steve's house. Rachel was shocked upon realizing that the purse that Ray retrieved from a bar stool belonged to Pat. John thanked Rachel for telling him that Pat left her purse at the Fireside Inn that afternoon. John told Steve that Pat's whereabouts are unknown and cancelled his rendezvous with Bernice to stay with Jim and Mary. Linda was stunned to identify Pat as Dr. Raymond's unconscious patient.

Dr. Raymond: "I'll finish up here, you go check in that arrival..."
Harriet: (Carol Williard, Introduction Line) "Yes, Doctor." (SHE GOES TO THE ATTENDANTS AND ANOTHER NURSE TAKES PAT'S WRIST, FEELING HER PULSE) "What happened to her?"

Notes: First appearance of Carol Williard as Nurse Harriet Sullivan.

NOVEMBER 23, 1972: Pre-empted for Thanksgiving NFL Football game.

NOVEMBER 24, 1972 (EP. #2134)
Jim predicted that Pat may return with a perfectly logical explanation for leaving Mary with the twins all day in response to John's complaints about Pat's lack of consideration. John was grateful to Steve for retrieving Pat's purse for him. Steve informed John and Jim that Gerald recounted that Pat was at the Fireside Inn late in the afternoon, but that Gerald did not know Pat's whereabouts after she left the restaurant. John grew frightened for Pat since she was away from the house without her car keys or money. Steve told Jim and John that Pat declined Gerald's offer to summon a cab for her after Gerald had requested that Pat leave the Fireside Inn due to being intoxicated. Mary coldly passed by Steve as John and Jim updated her on Pat. Jim, John, Steve, and Mary deduced that Pat was unlikely to be with Bernice or Lenore and decided to contact the police. John and Steve decided to search for Pat while Jim and Mary stayed at the house to tend to the twins. Linda told David that she was relieved that she was on duty to identify Pat. Neurosurgeon Dr. Paul Graham asked Linda to contact Pat's family and summon John to the hospital since he may need permission to operate on Pat once Paul reviews the results of the X-rays. Linda admonished Gloria for checking on her while she was working late in the emergency ward. Gloria promised Linda that she would quit treating her like a child and left the hospital. John instructed Mary to get Pat into bed should she return home as he and Steve were heading out the front door to look for Pat. Linda informed John that Pat was admitted into the emergency ward after being knocked unconscious from the impact of being hit by a car. Jim held Mary, who wept over Pat being injured while Steve drove John to the hospital. Steve asked John not to badger Linda about Pat's condition. John granted Paul permission to perform surgery on Pat should it be deemed necessary and grew despondent upon seeing her in the ward. Lenore agreed to babysit the twins at the Matthews house so that Jim and Mary could rush to the hospital.

Paul: (Introduction Line) (to Linda, about Pat) "She's still unconscious."

Linda: "...Now, will you let me make a phone call so Mrs. Randolph's family can know she's here!"
Gloria: (Exit Line) "I'm sorry...I'll keep your dinner warm for you at home..."

Notes: Last appearance of Rosetta LeNoire as Gloria Metcalf. First appearance of Stephen McHattie as Dr. Paul Graham.

NOVEMBER 27, 1972 (EP. #2135)
Paul informed Jim, Mary, and Steve that he had not received the results of the tests performed on Pat yet, that John went to see Pat in her hospital room, and was upfront about his concerns over the time in which Pat had remained unconscious. Lenore told a stunned Russ that Jim and Mary went to the hospital to be with Pat because she was injured in a car accident. Lenore asked Russ to keep her abreast of Pat's condition and stated that she is praying for her swift recovery. Mary berated herself for not stopping Pat from leaving the house and lamented that it felt as though her children were being taken away from her one-by-one, prompting Jim to embrace Mary as she began to cry. A dazed and despondent John asked Steve to inform Mark that he would not be going into the office tomorrow, arranged for Mark to contact Bernice, and to cancel his upcoming appointments that were not urgent. Steve was puzzled as John mused that he would never forgive himself for causing Pat's unhappiness by putting his job ahead of Pat's needs and for being a poor excuse for a husband. Mary eyed Steve suspiciously as he ruminated whether people truly know how much a husband loves his wife. Mark felt he and Bernice were being intrusive by coming to the hospital, but Bernice insisted on staying updated on Pat. Bernice noted that John barely spoke to her while talking to Mark about Pat. Bernice opined to Jim, Mary, Russ, and Mark that Pat may not remember the circumstances that led to her car accident. Mary pointedly asserted to Bernice that everyone's gratitude to Lenore was justified. Jim grew overwhelmed when Lenore insisted on taking the twins to her house so that he could join Mary, John, and Russ at the hospital. Paul theorized to Russ and Mary that Pat may be resisting consciousness due to an unwillingness to face certain trauma and that there is evidence of a heavy intake of alcohol that may mask other issues Pat's body was experiencing. At a boarding house, Alice became fearful when her calls to the family remained unanswered after many attempts.

NOVEMBER 28, 1972 (EP. #2136)
Alice continued to try to reach her family. John buried his face in his hands after begging Pat not to leave him and to forgive him. Russ informed Mary that Paul ordered additional X-rays on Pat and posited that she may be in an alcoholic stupor. Mary told Bernice that she assumed that Pat was with her earlier in the day, then Mary conceded that she tried not to pry into Pat's affairs despite that she had been tense lately. Bernice tried to downplay her talks with Pat to Mary. Mary remarked to Jim that Lenore was a generous friend, lamented that Pat had turned against her, and sobbed over Pat's hospitalization while Bernice tried to contain her grief and guilt. Ada lectured Rachel for taking Jamie to see Steve and hurting Jamie by getting him caught between Ted and Steve. Rachel groused to Ada about Ted spending time in prison and his inability to support his family, but Ada countered that Ted had been a good father to Jamie and juggles working at the Fireside Inn and taking care of Belle. Ada scoffed at Rachel's belief that Gerald is acting in her best interests and accused Rachel of ingratiating herself into Steve's life. Rachel proclaimed to Ada that Jamie would know Steve and threatened to move out should Ada stand in her way. David told Jim and Mary that Pat had external injuries and that her lack of response to stimuli may indicate brain damage, but that he was uncertain because many of Pat's symptoms are from alcoholic shock. Russ arranged for John to get a guest-room at the hospital so that Pat would not see him ill and exhausted once she regains consciousness. Bernice was floored when John rebuked discussing work with her. Steve told Bernice to return to the office to help Mark cover for him and John. Mary refused to believe Steve's claims that he did not betray Alice. Jim advised Steve to talk to Alice instead of defending himself to him and Mary. Alice decided that she should not expect her family to wait for her calls, that they had their own lives to lead, and that she no longer needed Steve. John stood vigil over Pat while Russ and David examined her.

Notes: David Rogers replaced Dr. Paul Graham in this episode and revisions were made to fit David into Act III instead of Paul Graham during the consultation with Jim and Mary on Pat's condition. David explained Paul's absence by stating that he was performing an emergency surgery.

NOVEMBER 29, 1972 (EP. #2137)
Steve encouraged Lenore to take the day off from work to help Helen tend to Wally and the twins because Lenore did not want Pat to be worried about anything once she regained consciousness. Steve asked Janice to review some estimates with Robert. Gerald approved of Rachel's plan to move out of Ada's house should she continue to oppose Steve seeing Jamie. Rachel surmised to Gerald that Steve retrieved Pat's purse instead of John because he would not want Mary to conclude that John was being friendly to Rachel, but admitted that she quit caring about Mary's opinion of her once she divorced Russ. Gerald urged Rachel to take Jamie to see Steve at his house. Rachel was furious when Gil hinted that Ada gave him the impression that things are not going well between Ted and Rachel, who ranted about Ada talking behind her back and stormed out of Gerald's office. Lenore told Robert that the twins sense that something is wrong and was relieved by Robert's assurances that her absence has not made things difficult for her coworkers. Robert was intrigued to learn from Lenore that Pat disappeared before lunch, left the twins with Mary, and that no one heard from Pat again. Lenore fretted to Robert that Pat may face serious complications should she not regain consciousness soon. Gil informed Ted that he was wrapping up his work for the parole board and that he had accepted a promotion to detective within the police force. Ted confided to Gil that he is taking care of Belle, has little time with Rachel and Jamie, and that Rachel takes Jamie to see Steve despite his objections. Gil offered to make a recommendation to the parole board that Ted would be allowed to leave Bay City so that his family could make a fresh start elsewhere. Lenore accepted Janice's offer to help Helen babysit Wally and the twins so that Lenore could go to the hospital. Janice told Rachel about Pat's car accident. Rachel balefully stared at a picture of Alice after Janice mentioned that Steve must expect Alice to return since she left her personal belongings at the house.

NOVEMBER 30, 1972 (EP. #2138)
John promised Pat that they would do things together that they never had time to do and that Jim, Mary, and Russ are praying for her. Paul gave instructions to Harriet in monitoring Pat while telling John that he could not speculate on Pat's chances of recovery. Jim advised Mary to quit thinking the worst about Pat's condition. Jim told Lenore that Paul does not seem optimistic about Pat regaining consciousness. Lenore echoed Jim and Mary's sentiments that Janice was considerate and kind for helping Helen babysit Wally and the twins. Steve told Jim and Lenore that it was fortunate that Janice could keep herself occupied with the Randolph twins so that she does not get bored at the house. John told Lenore that Paul believes that Pat has been unconscious for a prolonged period of time because of the high levels of alcohol found in her system. Janice informed Steve that Rachel came to the house to schedule Steve's next visits with Jamie. Mary overheard Steve tell Janice that he would stop by the Fireside Inn to discuss the matter with Rachel. Ted told Gil that he had neglected Jamie due to his daily visits with Belle and was attempting to make amends by coming home more often. Ted told Gil that his suggestion to leave Bay City may be the solution to his problems. Gil urged Ada to create a life of her own when she disliked the idea that Ted, Rachel, and Jamie may leave town. Ada agreed to accompany Gil to see a house he was interested in renting. Pat briefly stirred in her hospital bed, looked directly at John, spoke Lenore's name, then fell asleep again. Paul told Jim, Mary, John, Russ and Lenore that Pat had regained consciousness. Bernice was genuinely relieved to learn from John that Pat was responding to stimuli. John laid into Bernice for coming to the hospital under the pretense of having documents for him to sign. Pat eyed John intently, gasped, and proclaimed that she never wanted to see him again. Russ and Paul escorted a despondent John out of Pat's hospital room. Russ was shocked by Pat's request to keep John out of her room.

Jamie: (Tyler Mead, Exit Line) (TUGGING AT [TED'S] SLEEVE) "Daddy --"
Ted: "Okay, Jamie, here we go." (THEY GO UPSTAIRS)

Notes: Last appearance of Tyler Mead as Jamie Frame.

DECEMBER 1, 1972 (EP. #2139)
Bernice sensed a strange atmosphere as Jim, Mary, and Lenore curiously stared at John, who slowly came out of Pat's hospital room, leaned against the door, and closed his eyes while looking confused and ashen. Pat ordered Russ to keep John away from her and insisted that John was performing an act of great concern for her to hide his misdeeds. Jim restrained Mary from rushing into Pat's hospital room because Mary feared that something terrible had happened to Pat. John struggled to articulate Pat's reaction to seeing him to Lenore while Mary questioned Jim about John's distressed state and Russ exited Pat's hospital room. Russ advised John that Pat's wishes must be respected despite that he shared John's astonishment over Pat's refusal to see John. Jim, Mary, and Lenore were surprised when Pat requested to speak with Bernice privately. Pat told Bernice that she remembered getting drunk at bars, but could not bring herself to discuss catching John and Lenore together. Pat reflected to Bernice that she had many things to decide, asked Bernice to ensure that someone was taking care of the twins, and that Bernice was the one person she could trust. Gerald told Steve that Rachel took the day off and did not know that he wished to talk to her. Steve demanded that Gerald take Ted's place in seating customers at the restaurant because he had to leave the hospital to meet with Rachel. Ted tried to express his objections towards Rachel being out in public with Steve, who maintained that Ted should settle that matter with Rachel since Steve's only concern was to see Jamie. John told Lenore that Pat was behaving strangely. Pat grew hysterical while insisting that Russ remove the twins from Lenore's house after Pat learned that Lenore had been taking care of them. Jim, Mary, Lenore, and John acquiesced to Pat's demands despite being baffled by her aversion to Lenore babysitting the twins. John rejected Bernice's suggestion that he come to her place to get some rest. Pat vowed to Russ that she would not allow Lenore to steal her children.

Notes: According to a penciled-in note written at the end of Act IV of the script for this episode, the cast crawl included footage of John sitting in the hospital waiting room while Bernice stood and watched him.

DECEMBER 4, 1972 (EP. #2140)
Russ had Harriet consult with Paul on whether or not Pat could start eating solid foods. Pat discounted Russ's assumption that she confused reality and imagination while regaining consciousness. Russ bristled when Pat defended her stance on getting the twins away from Lenore, that Lenore had taken John away from her, and swore that she never wanted to see John and Lenore again. John declined Russ's suggestion that he go to work instead of staying at the hospital since John surmised that Pat could not avoid him permanently. Lenore admitted to Helen that she is astounded and hurt that Pat insisted on the twins being removed from her house and predicted that her friendship with Pat had ended. Russ lectured Pat for condemning John and Lenore without proof and refusal to let John provide explanations to dispel Pat's claims. Pat asked Russ to summon Lenore to the hospital so that she had a chance to prove her innocence to Pat. Lenore told Robert that Bernice was the last person to speak with Pat before she demanded that Jim and Mary get the twins out of her house, prompting Robert to theorize that Bernice may have caused Pat to turn against Lenore. Russ phoned Lenore to come to the hospital so that they could discuss Pat's emotional state before Lenore visits Pat. Janice opined that Steve and Rachel were similar because they aggressively pursue the things they want out of life, but Steve maintained that Alice's love changed the ways he views achieving wealth and prestige. Janice confessed to Steve that their parents made her wary of falling in love. Bernice updated Steve and Janice on Pat's condition after retrieving contracts that John needed to review. Paul informed John that his presence agitates Pat and that Russ would be present for Pat's visits with other people since her behavior has been unpredictable. Bernice reassured John that Pat's reasons for avoiding him do not involve knowing about their affair. Lenore was floored once Pat revealed her suspicions that Lenore started an affair with John prior to Walter's death.

Lenore: "I'm Mrs. Curtin. Dr. Matthews called to say Mrs. Randolph wants to see me."
Harriet: (Carol Williard, Exit Line) "Oh, yes. He wants to talk to you first. I'll go get him."

Notes: Last appearance of Carol Williard as Nurse Harriet Sullivan.

DECEMBER 5, 1972 (EP. #2141)
Lenore tried to convince Pat that John had been a friend to her and Walter, that Walter left John's law firm because he wished to return to the District Attorney's office, but decided not to divulge the reasons that Walter drank excessively and disappeared without providing his whereabouts to anyone. Pat got Lenore to acknowledge that the Curtin living room was in a shambles after Walter and Lenore had a terrible fight and that Walter was heading to John's office to discuss something urgent with him when Walter drove his car off the road, but Lenore denied Pat's conclusion that Walter planned to confront John about his affair with Lenore. Pat accused Lenore of tricking everyone into believing that she was completely devoted to Wally, preserving Walter's memory, and used Robert to cover up her trysts with John. Bernice tried to convince John to resume work and to relax at her apartment to no avail. Russ informed John that Pat was behaving irrationally, reacts violently to John's presence, and that she is making wild accusations about him and Lenore. Russ hypothesized to John that Pat was suffering from a period of disorientation in which a patient who had endured severe trauma may confuse reality with imagination. John told Jim and Mary that he and Bernice were working at the hospital to keep themselves busy. Russ granted Lenore's request to extend her visit with Pat. Pat told Lenore that she had proof that Lenore was stealing John away from her. John berated himself for ruining his marriage and rebuked Bernice's efforts to get him to leave the hospital. Bernice was upset when John encouraged her to accept Mark's lunch invitation. Lenore confessed to Pat that she and John had lunch many times to discuss her and insisted that Pat witnessed John and Lenore innocently joking about Wally while coming out of his bedroom. Pat ordered Lenore out of her life. John told Bernice that his jealousy of her romance with Mark may have been misplaced. Lenore stared at John and Bernice, who had tried to embrace John and convince him to rest at her place.

DECEMBER 6, 1972 (EP. #2142)
Alice gave her last name as Talbot to Carrington housekeeper Louise Goddard, who began interviewing Alice for the position of governess. Steve noticed that Lenore seemed visibly upset while giving Robert an assignment. Lenore downplayed her somber mood and declined Steve's offer to leave work to get some rest. Lenore told Robert that John insisted on coming to her house to deliver some contracts, that Pat had jumped to conclusions upon spying on her and John coming out of Wally's bedroom, and went to various bars to get drunk afterwards. Robert urged Lenore to confront Bernice after pointing out that it was suspicious that Pat suddenly came to her house despite avoiding Lenore for months. Lenore told Robert that Bernice has slandered her, but feared that Bernice might retaliate by revealing Walter's misdeeds. Robert cautioned Lenore against placing too much value on Walter's memory. Lenore resolved to talk to John about Bernice. Gerald tried to stall by slowly gathering papers from his desk when Ted received a long-distance call from Dick Langdon, who wished to interview Ted for a management position for the Lake Shore Restaurant chain in Chicago. Ted asked Dick to give him time to discuss things with Rachel since the hiring process involved Ted traveling to Chicago. Rachel was too rushed to pick up Jamie to talk to Ted about the call he had received. Louise advised Alice that Dennis required an exceptional person to be his governess because he had a serious heart ailment that curtails his physical activity and seldom leaves the apartment. Alice was distraught once Louise stated that no one was qualified for the position without references. Steve told Rachel that he regrets pursuing his selfish ambitions while neglecting his family for many years. Rachel opined to Steve that people who grew up in happy, comfortable homes cannot understand people like themselves that fought to rise above their poor backgrounds. Eliot told Louise that he would like to handle obtaining Alice's references himself after meeting her for the first time.

(THE CLOCK STRIKES TWO TIMES, AND LOUISE GENTLY ENTERS THE ROOM, QUIETLY. SHE STARES AT ALICE, WHOSE BACK IS TO HER)
Louise: (Introduction Line) "Good afternoon."
Alice: (STARTLED) "Oh, forgive me, I didn't hear you come in."
Louise: (STANDING QUITE STILL) "I'm sorry to keep you waiting, but we had a crisis in the kitchen. The maid said you came about the position of governess."
Alice: "Yes, I read the ad in the Times this morning."
Louise: "And now you're reading about Mr. Carrington himself, I see."
Alice: (REALIZING SHE STILL HOLDS THE BOOK) "I saw it on the shelf and couldn't resist reading it...."

Louise: "Oh, Mr. Carrington. I didn't expect you home so soon."
Eliot: (Joe Hannaham, Introduction Line) "I have to rush right out again to interview Senator Morrison."
Louise: "You didn't tell me about that."
Eliot: "I didn't know it." (LOOKING AT ALICE) "Hello, I'm Eliot Carrington."
Alice: "Good afternoon, Mr. Carrington."

Book text: "A Journalist's Diary of Eastern Europe: by Eliot Carrington. Eliot Carrington, one of America's most distinguished journalists, has won numerous prizes for his daily syndicated columns. He began his career as a war correspondent for the [...]"

Notes: First appearance of Joe Hannaham as Eliot Carrington and Anne Meacham as Louise Goddard Brooks. Dennis Carrington's age is revealed to be twelve in this episode.

DECEMBER 7, 1972 (EP. #2143)
Pat confirmed for Bernice that Lenore denied having an affair with John and cited him using work as justification for being dubious towards any explanations that John or Lenore could provide to her. Rachel protested when Ted admitted that he openly confides in Gil and distrusts Rachel because she broke the agreement by refusing to avoid Steve. Ted told Rachel that he is going to Chicago to check out a job, that leaving Bay City would be beneficial to Belle, and that it would solve their problems. Rachel felt defeated when Ted contended that he was determined to improve the situation for his family. Rachel vowed to Gerald that she would not stop Ted from starting a new life, but hinted that she would not be forced into joining him in Chicago. Gerald suggested that Rachel discuss things with Steve since he would want to know about Jamie moving away from Bay City. Janice assured Steve that she finds working with Robert and Lenore fulfilling and intends to stay in town. Rachel called Steve to inform him of Ted's plans and expressed doubt that she could change Ted's mind. Janice emphasized to Steve that he could visit Jamie in Chicago and that some wives remain with their husbands regardless of the circumstances. Janice opined to Steve that he would not be discontent if his wife had stuck by him. Louise tersely remarked to Alice that other applicants for the position of Dennis's governess are not secretive about their qualifications. Alice privately confided to Eliot that she was separated from her husband and had been a registered nurse for years before being assigned to a cardiac unit at a large hospital. Eliot invited Alice to return to meet Dennis and entertained the possibility that he might hire Alice without references should she hit it off with Dennis. Bernice was unapologetic when Lenore accused her of misleading Pat to believe that she and John have been lovers for months. Lenore called Bernice's bluff in telling John about Walter's shady dealings with Wayne after predicting that John would dump Bernice once Lenore reveals her machinations to him.

Lenore: "You may not be able to give up John, but I don't think he'll have any trouble giving you up once I talk to him."
Bernice: "You wouldn't dare do that."
Lenore: "Oh, wouldn't I?"
Bernice: "You don't want John to know what I know about Walter, do you?"
Lenore: "You can't tell John anything about Walter that doesn't incriminate yourself."
Bernice: "I can tell him a great deal that perhaps even you don't know."
Lenore: "Don't be too sure about that."
Bernice: "Should I reopen the Wayne Addison murder case? Do you want everyone in Bay City to find out what kind of man your husband really was? Do you want that precious son of yours to be told Walter Curtin was a liar, and a thief, and just perhaps, a murderer as well."
Lenore: "You do what you have to do, and I'll do what I must." (SHE LEAVES WITH BERNICE STARING AFTER HER).

DECEMBER 8, 1972 (EP. #2144)
Pat told Jim that drastic changes are needed in her and John's lives. Pat begged Jim not to tell the twins that they would be returned to both of their parents soon. Paul informed Russ and Jim that Pat's emotional states are unpredictable, that she does not seem eager to leave the hospital, and that she has exhibited irrational behavior at times. Jim proposed to Russ and Paul that releasing Pat from the hospital may allow her family and friends to talk more casually in her usual surroundings, which would help Pat conquer her alcoholism and break through the defenses she had built around her. Paul advised Jim and Russ that John should be prepared for the problems that Pat's erratic behavior might present. Bernice complained to Pat that Lenore was desperate to malign her to John and feared that she would lose her job should Steve hear Lenore's accusations against her. Pat vowed that she would talk to Steve on Bernice's behalf. Ada surmised to Steve that Ted accepted a job in Chicago after receiving advice from Gil, who suggested that leaving town would solve his problems. Steve swore to Ada that Ted would not be allowed to take Jamie away from him, despite Ada's stance that Ted had the right to make decisions on his marriage. Ada persuaded Ted to cancel an appointment so that they could discuss an urgent matter. Zack told Ray that Jake wishes to recruit them in a scheme that could make them instantly wealthy. Ray warned Zack that Jake tricks young, naive men into committing crimes, leaves them to take the rap for him, and tried to appeal to Zack's feelings for Linda to convince him to steer clear of Jake. Ted deduced that Rachel told Steve about his plans, but insisted to Ada that his marriage cannot succeed unless he can get Rachel and Jamie away from Steve's harmful influence. Rachel promised Steve that she would prevent Ted from taking Jamie away from Bay City by refusing to join him. Steve was touched when Rachel agreed that Jamie would be grateful to know Steve during his youth once Jamie learns of his true parentage.

(FRAME LIVING ROOM. JAMIE IS PLAYING BY THE FIREPLACE WITH A TOY FIRE ENGINE AS STEVE AND RACHEL WATCH)
Steve: "You like that engine, Tiger?"
Jamie: (Brad Bedford, Introduction Line) "It's great!"
Steve: "Someday, we'll ask the Fire Chief if we can ride on a real one. Would you like that?"
Jamie: "Wow!" (HE RACES THE ENGINE AGAIN, WITH THE SOUND GOING FULL BLAST. RACHEL COVERS HER EARS AND LAUGHS...)

Notes: First appearance of Brad Bedford as Jamie Frame.

DECEMBER 11, 1972 (EP. #2145)
Mark informed Lenore that John calls into the office several times throughout the day and Bernice brings work to him since John has not left the hospital since Pat's accident. Lenore asked Mark to have John contact her because she did not want to run into Bernice by going to the hospital. Mark was confused when Lenore made a veiled remark about Bernice's fondness for Pat being a ploy. Robert told Janice that Lenore was irritable and frustrated because she has been under a strain lately. Janice voiced fears to Robert that Lenore may resent their rapport because she is romantically interested in him, but Robert maintained that he and Lenore are simply good friends. John suggested that Lenore meet him at the Randolph house so that they could speak privately. Mark tried unsuccessfully to get Bernice to explain the reasons that Pat refuses to speak to John. Bernice opined that Lenore insinuates things about people behind their backs and was desperate to malign her because Lenore refrained from going to the hospital to avoid Bernice. Mark was incredulous when Bernice insisted that Lenore is trying to get out of an ugly situation due to Pat learning that John and Lenore are lovers. Bernice told Mark that Lenore seemed like a wonderful woman on the surface, but was a destructive person underneath, which Pat found out much to her sorrow. Jim and Mary were shocked by Pat's contentions that she does not want John's pity, had reconciled with the fact that Lenore had stolen John from her, and that she intends to raise the twins alone. Pat asked Jim and Mary for a place to live until she could get her life in order again once she leaves the hospital. Lenore told John that she realized Bernice's schemes after Pat accused her of having an affair with John and deduced that Bernice was the other woman in John's life. John admitted to Lenore that he feels conflicted because Bernice provided him with the love and understanding that Pat had denied him, prompting Lenore to decide that she would expose John to the diabolical nature of the woman he supposedly loved.

DECEMBER 12, 1972 (EP. #2146)
Lenore told John that Walter was involved in Wayne and Bernice's plot to swindle Steve by tricking him into merging with an electronics firm that did not have any assets, which caused Walter to slowly destroy himself by drinking heavily, neglecting his work, and disappearing without providing his whereabouts to anyone. John conceded to Lenore that she had clarified things that had puzzled him for months, but tried to resist accepting Lenore's assertions that Bernice had known Wayne prior to coming to Bay City and that Lenore would not sacrifice John and Pat for the sake of preserving Walter's memory. Lenore stressed to John that Bernice betrayed him, John, and Pat, that Bernice drove Pat to drink by getting involved with John, and that Pat was in the hospital because of Bernice's machinations. John resolved to confess his indiscretions to Pat and deal with Bernice afterwards. Jim assured Paul that he and Mary would take care of Pat once she is discharged from the hospital. Paul told Jim that he was puzzled by Pat's extreme reactions to John and speculated that a side effect of Pat's accident may be to confuse fiction with reality. Bernice was stunned when Pat proclaimed that John means nothing to her and that she intends to start a new life with the twins. Gerald admitted to Ted that Rachel told him that Ted was checking out a job in Chicago. Ted remonstrated Gerald for discussing his personal issues with Rachel and accused Gerald of influencing her to take Jamie to see Steve during their visits. Gerald warned that Steve would have a strong opinion on Ted's attempts to move Rachel and Jamie out of Bay City, chastised Ted for trying to escape his problems, and potentially burdening him with running the Fireside Inn alone. Helen lamented to Robert that Lenore refuses to confide her troubles to Helen as Robert played with Wally. Lenore recounted her talk with John to Robert and expressed fears that Bernice made it impossible for John to extricate himself from the situation. Pat angrily stopped Harriet from bringing John into her room for a visit.

Harriet: (Jane Alice Brandon, Introduction Line) (to Pat) "Oh, you're not napping after all."

Gerald: "Why don't you figure it out, sonny instead of making these grand plans of moving your family away?"
Ted: "I've been figuring it out. And when I come to a conclusion, I may tell you about it --"
Gerald: "Just remember, you don't run away and leave me holding the bag here."
Ted: "What makes you think I'd leave you anything?" (HE TURNS AND GOES OUT OF THE ROOM WITH GERALD STARING AFTER HIM)

Notes: First appearance of Jane Alice Brandon as Nurse Harriet Sullivan.

DECEMBER 13, 1972 (EP. #2147)
Janice opined that Steve and Rachel should spend time together with Jamie without other people chaperoning them. Steve asked Janice to be present when Rachel brings Jamie for a visit because it protects them from arousing misunderstandings and would prevent anyone from repeating untrue stories to Alice once she returns to Steve. Eliot advised Louise that he was inclined to hire Alice without references because she is intelligent and good-humored. Louise opined to Eliot that his personal interest in Alice was odd and reiterated her disapproval of hiring someone who was secretive about her background. Eliot told Alice that Louise is over-protective and that he worries about Dennis' welfare because his work requires a great deal of travel. Alice grew sympathetic when Eliot mused that Dennis resents being stuck inside because of his serious heart condition. Rachel credited Steve and Gerald for loaning money to Ted so that he could open the Fireside Inn and insisted that Gerald made the restaurant a success despite Ada's efforts to assure Rachel that Ted was trying hard to provide for his family. Ada failed to convince Rachel that Ted could pay off his loans to Steve and Gerald by selling the Fireside Inn and that moving to Chicago would be the best option for him, Rachel, and Jamie. Rachel proclaimed to Ada that Ted could handle his own life while she works with Steve to ensure Jamie's welfare. Dennis was impressed when Alice explained that the islets of Langerhans was in the pancreas and not an island off the coast of Norway. Alice bonded with Dennis, who fretted that he does not see his parents much and that it is difficult to play games with Louise. Steve and Janice told Jamie about living on a farm as children. Rachel promised Steve that he would remain present in Jamie's life despite Ted and Ada's objections. Alice told Dennis that she did not mind Dennis's inquisitive nature because children become secure by asking questions. Alice agreed to provide references to Eliot on the condition that her family and Steve do not learn her whereabouts.

Louise: "Dennis, are you sure of that spelling?"
Dennis: (Mike Hammett, Introduction Line) (LOOKS AT A PIECE OF PAPER AND SPELLS IT OUT) "Langerhans... It's right here!"
Louise: "There's no need to shout."

Notes: First appearance of Mike Hammett as Dennis Carrington (Wheeler). The reference to the "islets of Langerhans" during this episode involved Louise and Dennis looking at an atlas instead of a biology textbook.

DECEMBER 14, 1972 (EP. #2148)
David almost hung up the phone on Eliot, who refused to provide his name, called to check a personal reference given to him, and asked David to respect the confidential nature of his inquiry. Alice took the phone from Eliot and explained to David that she is seeking employment for the position of governess for an invalid boy. David told Eliot that he highly recommends Alice because of her extensive nursing experience and specialty in caring for cardiac patients. Alice hung up the phone when Russ entered David's office. David told Russ that Alice was in New York, but discouraged him from tracing the call or giving Alice's whereabouts to Jim and Mary despite that they are desperate to know her whereabouts. Russ told Jim that Alice must be dealing with her issues since she was working again and emphasized that Alice will contact the family once she is ready. Jim took Russ's advice not to arouse Pat's hostility by mentioning Lenore's name and to contact Paul should Pat become unreasonable at any time while she is staying with Jim and Mary. John agreed to come to Bernice's place to talk instead of discussing anything over the phone. Jim and Harriet were perplexed when Bernice abruptly left the hospital instead of visiting Pat. Alice reassured Eliot that she is satisfied with her salary, living in the Carrington residence, and that Dennis is an affable boy. Louise was slightly discomfited that Eliot hired Alice without letting her check the references herself. Eliot asked Louise to respect his judgment, to give Alice a chance to prove that she was ideal for the job, and suggested that Louise may come to like Alice. Bernice felt wounded when John rejected her embrace upon his arrival at her apartment. John lambasted Bernice for making a fool of him, cheating her friends and employers, using Walter's weaknesses to destroy him, and being incapable of loving anyone except herself. John told Bernice that he was wrong to risk his marriage by getting involved with Bernice and vowed to confess everything to Pat. Bernice vowed to stop Pat from reconciling with John.

Russ: "Just the same, Dave, they'd like to know where she is."
David: (Exit Line) (about Alice) "Russ, since she's using an assumed name, she obviously isn't ready to let anyone know that. We have to respect her wishes, even though it isn't easy."

John: "You don't love anyone, except yourself."
Bernice: "That's not true. I loved Wayne Ad --" (SHE STOPS)
John: "Yes, go one. What was Wayne Addison to you?"
Bernice: "He was my husband, once, long ago, before I came to Bay City, but that's all in the past --"
John: "Is it? Wayne's dead, and Walter's dead..."
Bernice: "I had nothing to do with Wayne dying...or Walter dying...Why do you bring up all those things?"
John: "Because now I understand...that I've been fool enough to risk the woman I love for a liar and a cheat and a tramp."
Bernice: "John, please. I'm not the same person anymore...loving you has changed me."
John: "I hope so. But I'm not sticking around to see the changes."

Eliot: (Joe Hannaham, Exit Line) (to Louise, about Alice) "Give her a chance. You may even end up liking her as much as Dennis and I do."

Notes: Last appearance of Walter McGinn as Dr. David Rogers. Last appearance of Joe Hannaham as Eliot Carrington.

DECEMBER 15, 1972 (EP. #2149)
Pat admitted to Bernice that she had concealed suffering from headaches and dizziness so that Paul would not keep her in the hospital. Bernice told Pat that she must talk to her privately because it may affect Pat's plans for the future. Pat decided to come up with a meeting place so that Bernice could substantiate her revised claims that they were mistaken about John and Lenore having an affair in person. Pat hid her headache from Paul and insisted to Jim that it was important for her to pick up some belongings from the Randolph house before she gets settled with Jim and Mary. Paul told Jim and Pat that he had an upcoming appointment with John, prompting Pat to request that Jim keep John from coming to the house and let her rest before bringing the twins to see her. Robert took Wally to bed so that John could speak to Lenore alone. Lenore warned John that Bernice is vindictive when John stated that he split with Bernice and intends to pay the consequences once he confesses the truth to Pat. John expressed gratitude to Lenore for risking Walter's memory by exposing Bernice's deceit and assured her that they would always be friends. Robert comforted Lenore, who tearfully remarked that she had not felt that everything would turn out right since Walter died. Gerald advised Ada to quit interfering in Rachel's life and maintained that he was protecting Rachel's interests. Ada told Ted that she approved of Ted's efforts to move to Chicago because he and Rachel would have a better chance of making their marriage work out of town. Ted told Ada that he could not compete with Steve in financially supporting Rachel. Ada urged Ted to consult John for legal advice, sell the restaurant to satisfy Gerald and Steve's investments, and use the remaining funds to start fresh in Chicago. Harriet intercepted John from going into Pat's hospital room since it was her duty to follow Paul's instructions. Jim convinced John to allow Pat to rest and become secure enough to talk to him. Pat snuck out of her room and hurried out of the exit while Harriet was occupied.

Production Notes: Instructions were included within this script to take polaroids of Bernice's apartment, the hospital, and Pat's hospital room to be shown at the end of the show. It is unclear whether the snapshots were used during the conclusion of Act IV or the crawl at the closing of this episode.

DECEMBER 18, 1972 (EP. #2150)
Bernice was upset when Mark arrived unexpectedly. Mark got the impression that Bernice would not miss him while he was in Washington handling an appeal. Mark was chagrined when Bernice claimed that she had too many things on her mind and could not join him in Washington while Pat was still recovering. Bernice asked Mark to quit pestering her, prompting Mark to note that Bernice often shifts from friendly and affectionate to distant and cold towards him. Bernice laid into Mark for smothering her, cruelly stated that their romance had been nothing more than a ruse, and taunted Mark for allowing himself to be punished and victimized by women, leading Mark to storm out of Bernice's apartment. Pat called to tell Bernice that she took a taxi after leaving the hospital and asked Bernice to enter the house through the terrace should the front door be locked. Mark quietly returned to Bernice's apartment as Pat begged Bernice to rush to the house and tried to keep herself steady due to feeling faint. Lenore told Robert that she took the risk of Bernice vindictively ruining Walter's reputation for John and Pat's sakes. Robert theorized that Pat may struggle to face Lenore because she bought Bernice's lies about her and encouraged Lenore to take the initiative to reconcile with Pat. Lenore thanked Robert for his unwavering moral support during such a difficult time. Harriet informed Lenore that Pat had left the hospital without anyone's knowledge and likely went to the Randolph house. Jim asked Mary to contact a babysitter for the twins so that she could catch Pat at the Randolph house and warned Mary not to lecture Pat for leaving the hospital without notice. Pat tenderly touched a photograph of the twins, placed a picture of John face down, and rubbed her temples to alleviate a headache. Pat decided to nap before Bernice arrives for their meeting. Lenore declined Robert's offer to accompany her to see Pat since Lenore's phone calls were left unanswered. Pat was jolted awake by Mary, who gasped upon finding Bernice's motionless body on the terrace.

Pat: "I don't understand anything --"
Bernice: "You will when I see you, believe me..." (SOUND OF A HORN TOOTING OUTSIDE THE PHONE BOOTH)
Pat: "Oh, here's my taxi. Hurry up, please, Bernice...Once they find I've left the hospital, somebody's bound to come over to the house..."
Bernice: (Exit Line, 1972) "I'll be right there." (SHE HANGS UP. CUT TO: MARK AT [BERNICE'S] DOOR).

Production Notes: Instructions were included within this script to take polaroids of the Randolph terrace to be used at the end of Act IV of this episode.

DECEMBER 19, 1972 (EP. #2151)
Mary tried to comfort a hysterical Pat when they stumbled across Bernice's motionless body on the Randolph terrace. Paul asked Harriet to check on whether anyone witnessed Pat leaving the hospital upon learning from Jim and Harriet that Pat had disappeared and was last seen in her hospital room packing her belongings. Jim told John that Pat went missing from the hospital. Paul opined to Jim and John that Pat may be more disturbed than he initially suspected. Lenore came over to John and Pat's house, watched Mary as she tried unsuccessfully to find Bernice's pulse, and concluded that she had been killed. Mary tended to Bernice's body while Lenore made phone calls to let the authorities know that Bernice had been killed. Paul asked Jim to keep him abreast of Pat's whereabouts. Lenore informed Paul that Pat had returned home and that Mary had discovered Bernice on the Randolph terrace. Lenore and John were appalled when Pat accused Lenore of murdering Bernice to keep her from telling Pat that John and Lenore were having an affair, but Lenore insisted Bernice invented all that to protect herself. Paul arrived to confirm that Bernice was dead, that her clothing had been torn, and that bruises and lacerations had been found on her body. Gil, who recently joined the police force, arrived on the scene and questioned John about the obviously violent death.

Mary: "What is it, Lenore?"
Lenore: "I'm afraid you're right. Bernice is dead."

Pat: (To John) "Go out on the terrace and see for yourself what Lenore has done!"

DECEMBER 20, 1972 (EP. #2152)
Gil's further questioning of John made him realize Pat has the answers he was looking for, but Paul had already sedated her. John said Pat wasn't responsible for what she might say because she'd been behaving irrationally since her accident. Steve phoned and John told him that Bernice was dead. Gil told John to tell Steve to come over so he could question him. Janice phoned Rachel at the Fireside Inn to let her know Steve wouldn't be able to see Jamie tomorrow. Rachel worried what would happen to Gerald when Ted said he wants to sell the Inn so he could pay Gerald and Steve back. Fearing for his income, Gerald advised Rachel to fight Ted all the way. In New York City, Dennis Carrington and his live-in nurse Alice (using the alias Alice Talbot) talked about how much they missed their mothers as she sat by his bed while he fell asleep. Eliot, Dennis's father, tried to cheer Alice up when Dennis told him she misses her family. Steve told Gil Bernice had been dating Mark, currently in Washington on business.

Eliot: (James Douglas, Introduction Line) (to Alice and Dennis) "Good evening, you two."

Notes: First appearance of James Douglas as Eliot Carrington.

DECEMBER 21, 1972 (EP. #2153)
Linda told Gil he couldn't talk to Pat (who was back in hospital) without her doctor's permission. Pat told Gil she'd fallen asleep waiting for Bernice to arrive for their meeting. Russ was upset with Pat for implicating Lenore in Bernice's death. Gil had Mary down to his office, where she told him she didn't know what had turned Pat against Lenore. Ted came by to see Gil to say he was going to Chicago to check out a job offer. John told Pat that Lenore had told him the truth about Walter being a liar and a cheat so that he could see what kind of a fool he'd been. Pat was furious at John when he admitted he'd had an affair with Bernice, and she broke down in tears when she realized how she'd wronged Lenore.

John: "The woman you think was your best friend... was the woman I'd been having an affair with."
Pat: [WHISPERING] "Bernice?"
John: "Yes."
Pat: "I don't believe you!"

DECEMBER 22, 1972 (EP. #2154)
Lenore told Robert she's worried she might say something to Gil that would incriminate Pat. Lenore broke the news about Bernice's death to Mark when he came to tell her he was taking a job in Washington. Steve told Ted he wouldn't let him take Jamie away from Bay City. Housekeeper Louise Goddard introduced Alice and Iris Carrington. Dennis was apprehensive when Alice told him his mother was home from Europe, and started to cry when Louise came to tell him Iris had changed her mind about seeing him, not knowing Louise had advised Iris not to see the boy without Eliot's permission. John told Lenore that Pat wanted to see her now that she knew the truth, and couldn't believe it when Gil said Lenore is his best suspect so far.

Iris: (Beverlee McKinsey, Introduction Line) "Aren't you going to introduce us, Louise?"

Notes: First appearance of Beverlee McKinsey as Iris.

At Christmas morning at the Matthews home, Jim took a photo of Michael and Marianne with Mary in front of the mantelpiece. Mary was thrilled that Russ dropped by since her other children were indisposed. John visited Pat in hospital to try to make amends, but she shrank away when he tried to touch her. Steve told Janice that unhappy Christmases were in their past. Russ brought Janice a gift since she was his and David's first research volunteer. Steve was ecstatic when Rachel brought "Tiger" (Jamie) over Christmas morning, but was clearly unhappy when Jamie referred to Ted as "Daddy." Jamie gave him a candy dish he'd made himself. Ted phoned Ada and was told Rachel was out with Jamie, as Gerald had predicted to him. Pat and Lenore made up with tears and hugs. Pat told her she'd driven John into Bernice's arms by being a nag when he came home late from the office, and then revealed she thinks he killed Bernice. Jim had to take the phone after Mary began to cry when Alice called to wish them a merry Christmas. John, Michael, Marianne, Mary, and Jim sang "Jingle Bells" around the Christmas tree, while Rachel, Steve, Jamie, and Janice sang "Silent Night" around the fireplace. Steve's eyes were drawn sadly to a photo of Alice as the song wound down.

Janice: "Thank you again for your present... Russ."
Russ: (Robert Hover, Exit Line) "My pleasure. Bye."

Jamie: (To Steve) "Merry Christmas... Mr. Frame!"

Notes: Last appearance of Robert Hover as Russ Matthews.

After Gil quizzed John some more, Mark told John he knew about the charade he and Bernice played to make a fool out of him. Paul was sympathetic when Pat expressed regret over implicating Lenore in Bernice's murder to the authorities since she no longer suspects Lenore of committing the crime. Pat was more worried about Lenore's status in the murder case when Lenore tried to get her to forgive John. Mark told Gil Bernice had just been using him to cover her affair with John. Mark came to say goodbye to Pat, and told her about the time he beat a man his mother had been cheating on his father with. Pat and John each asked if the other had killed Bernice.

John: "For what it's worth, Mark, I never really wanted to deceive you."
Mark: Oh, John, don't play the saintly role with me. I know you now."
John: "I suppose I deserve that."
Mark: "You deserve much worse than that, believe me."

DECEMBER 27, 1972 (EP. #2157)
John admitted it when Gil confronted him about his affair with Bernice, and said that Lenore was the only one he'd confided in about it. Gerald walked in on Rachel and Ted arguing about her inability to stay away from Steve. Gerald told Rachel that when Steve realizes that Alice was gone for good she'd better be around or she'd miss the chance of a lifetime. Eliot gave Alice a pin from him and Dennis. Alice told Louise she was wrong to think it wasn't important that Eliot spend time with Dennis. Gil became even more suspicious of Lenore when she said she'd confronted Bernice over her affair with John.

Gil: "Did anyone know you were sleeping with her?"
John: "You put it rather crudely, don't you?"

DECEMBER 28, 1972 (EP. #2158)
Mary admitted to Pat the phone call she'd received was from Gil saying he had more questions for her. Steve told Pat that Mary blames him for Alice leaving Bay City because of a letter Alice wrote to her and Jim saying he'd betrayed her. Paul jokingly told Harriet that he would like to assert his considerable influence at the hospital to convince Harriet to go on a date with him. Paul informed Gil that he was summoned to the Randolph household because Bernice had been found dead, gave a sedative to a hysterical Pat, and that Bernice had been a frequent visitor at the house due to her supposed friendship with Pat. Pat told John every time she sees him she imagines Bernice in his arms, and that she'd ask Mary to make arrangements for him to see the twins. Mark warned Pat to be careful what she said to Gil. Gil accused Mary of deliberately not saying anything that would implicate Lenore. John swore to Lenore that he would take the punishment if it turns out Pat did kill Bernice.

DECEMBER 29, 1972 (EP. #2159)
Jamie was sad that Ted had to go to Chicago and couldn't spend the day with him. Ted tried to convince Ada that Rachel would go along with his plans. Ray told Gerald not to take his problems out on him. Linda's boyfriend Zack Richards dropped by the Inn to tell Ray that Jake Barnes wants him to rejoin their organization. Mark cleared out his desk and handed secretary Joan the file on the Parrish case. Mark told Ted he couldn't help him any longer when Ted wanted to talk about the Fireside Inn's business, which Mark took over handling when Peggy left town. Mark told Lenore that John earned whatever happens to him. Ada told Rachel she makes Ted feel like he can't support his family. Ada refused to let Rachel and Jamie stay at her home if Rachel continued to threaten her marriage, which Rachel said wasn't working out.

Notes: The flashback to Bernice's death was filmed at the same time as this episode. Appearance by Joan Barnard.
