Jake and Vicky both grew up in Lassiter, a poor mining town in Pennsylvania.
Best friends, they delighted in pulling prank after prank on the hapless citizens. They became lovers while teenagers.
In 1984, they discovered that Vicky
belonged to the wealthy Love family of Bay City. They arrived in Bay
City early the following year with the intention of seizing Marley's
share of the family fortune and making off with it. Marley stood to
inherit $22 million when she turned 18 in July of 1985.
But Jake fell in love with Marley
Hudson, and he dumped Vicky unceremoniously. Vicky tried desperately to win him back, even
joining forces with her mother Donna, who hated Jake and Marley together.
In 1986, Jake and Vicky were trapped
in a cave-in together. Facing imminent death, Jake admitted to Vicky that he loved her and would always
love her, and that the only reason he was with Marley was because Marley was everything Vicky wasn't: good, kind, and uncomplicated.
Vicky swore she could be all of those
things if she just had a chance with him. Jake didn't give her that chance, though, and returned to Marley, marrying her in
September of that year.
In the summer of 1988,
Jake was on the outs with Marley, and Vicky had been repeatedly rejected by Jamie Frame.
Abetted by two bottles of wine, Jake and Vicky spent one night together.
When Vicky became pregnant shortly
afterwards, Jake suspected the baby might be his. He campaigned vigorously to win the baby for himself
and Marley. But the baby was revealed to be Jamie's.
In 1990, Vicky was horrified to learn
that Jake had slept with her mother. She screamed at him "You're disgusting! I
hate you!" while pummeling his chest with her fists. Later she would
ask him if he was thinking of Marley when he made love to Donna.
